A Guide To Men’s Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

Hair Transplant

Hair transplants officially came out of the cosmetic surgery closet the moment Man United striker Wayne Rooney tweeted:

“Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25 why not. I’m delighted with the result.”

Rooney’s not alone. With 40 per cent of under-35-year-olds already going thin on top, there’s a sizeable market out there for transplants.

Why?

Some men embrace baldness – and props to them – but for others thinning hair can negatively affect their self-esteem. A hair transplant can help achieve fuller locks and boost self-confidence.

How?

The procedure Rooney opted for – and the most popular form of transplant – Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), is a much less invasive treatment than previous techniques and involves removing individual hairs from the back or side of the head (or the chest if you’re already too thin on top for hair to be harvested from your bonce) and implanting them elsewhere on your scalp, usually where hairs once grew.

Carried out under local anaesthetic, the procedure takes around eight hours (remember to pack a good book) and costs around £10,000. “FUE is simple, minimally invasive and there are no stitches or obvious scars,” says Dr. Raghu Reddy of The Private Clinic in London’s Harley Street.

Since the more hair you’ve lost, the more the procedure is likely to cost, he advises addressing the issue sooner rather than later. If you leave it until you look like Jean-Luc Picard, you’ve probably left it a little too late.

Also bear in mind that one FUE procedure may not permanently solve thinning hair problems. If you are predisposed to male pattern baldness (MPB), you will likely have to undergo repeat procedures as often as every couple of years to fend off hair loss; Rooney, for example, has already had at least two treatments.

Can you look good without surgery?

February 12, 2016 by

Men’s Health

With cosmetic surgery on the rise, we explore science’s natural alternatives.

Britons’ appetite for sculpting themselves better doesn’t just extend to gymgoers; more and more of us are taking to the knife to beat nature. New data from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons found that 51,140 procedures were carried out in 2015, up 13% on the previous year. Is our obsession with perfection driving us to dysmorphia or is botox simply one more weapon in the fight against ageing? MH dissects your most-asked cosmetic questions.

What you’re buying

[…]

“Patients report higher levels of self-confidence after undergoing a cosmetic procedure,” says cosmetic doctor Dennis Wolf from the Private Clinic of Harley Street. “Cosmetic surgery, for the right patient, can help to increase self-confidence but, more than this, it can help to give the patient the encouragement they need to take greater care of their body and lead a healthier lifestyle overall.”

Should you buy?

It’s not like getting a tattoo in a seaside town – cosmetic surgery requires a bit of forethought via a consultation process. It’s not just for the patient either – Dr Wolf claims he uses consultations to assess if the treatment’s right for the patient. “I consider everything from the patient’s general health and fitness, their age and motivations for seeking treatment,” says Wolf. “I also look into the patient’s history for signs of body dysmorphia, eating disorders or any other mental health conditions.”

Whether you should be seriously considering surgery is, for our money, a deeply personal matter. When it comes to liposuctions and tummy tucks – or god forbid, pectoral or bicep implants – we recommend committing to fitness with weight loss or bulk-up workouts rather than simply throwing money at the aesthetic problem. But if your chin is really holding you back, who are we to tell you not to reshape it?

5 cosmetic ‘tweakment’ trends expected to soar in 2019

January 2, 2019 by

Harper’s Bazaar

Whether you’re for or against invasive aesthetic transformations, it’s a booming industry with new technologies advancing treatments all the time. 2019 looks set to see the demand for cosmetic surgery procedures further increase, with a trend for truly natural-looking results. We asked experts from The Private Clinic of Harley Street, one of the country’s leading cosmetic surgery groups … to share their new year ‘tweakment’ predictions, below.

3. The ‘secret facelift’

Davood Fallahdar, consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street explains that the ‘temporal facelift’, also known as the ‘mini’ or ‘secret facelift’, “will become one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in 2019”. Apparently demand has been increasing in recent years, with many patients opting for it over a full facelift due to the natural and fresher look it offers.

“Unlike a full facelift, the treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic. This means that patients can return to work the next day and don’t have to suffer the abundance of unsightly bruising, swelling and bandages as seen with full facelifts, as the scar is hidden on the scalp, within the hair and not on the face.”

4. Non-surgical ‘jobs’

Dr Hao Hanson Yu, aesthetic doctor at The Private Clinic of Harley Street confirms that the era of dramatic cosmetic surgery procedures has truly passed, “with patients looking for not just a subtler look and an alternative to invasive forms of cosmetic surgery”. Cue fewer over-filled lips and a further rise in ‘tweakments’.

“Perhaps one of the most popular of these treatments will be the non-surgical nose job. This is a form of nose reshaping that uses dermal filler as an effective alternative to surgical rhinoplasty. The fillers are used to subtly enhance the contours of the patients nose and at the same time reshaping to provide more definition. Most patients experience little swelling and can go back to work immediately.”

5. Minimally-invasive bunion treatment

We can thank the Meghan-effect for this one, given the speculation around the Duchess of Sussex’s bunion treatment this year, but luckily, it’s also driven by major advancements in the treatment for the condition. Mr Andrea Bianchi, orthopaedic surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street explains that, “a pioneering, minimally-invasive keyhole surgery is now available that requires only a local anaesthetic and removes a bunion quickly without the use of screws or plates. Unlike any other bunion surgery available in the UK, patients can walk without crutches immediately after the procedure and are able to return to everyday activities almost straight away.”

He’s therefore expecting to see “a huge surge in the number of women seeking treatment for their bunions”. And why not?

6. Same-day varicose vein removal

A survey of 1000 UK men and women conducted via OnePoll found that over two thirds of Brits admit to feeling self-conscious wearing certain clothes because of their varicose veins and spider veins. Dr Dynesh Rittoo, vascular surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street hypothesises; “I think this is down to the ever-increasing role of social media with everyone wanting to look as good as their favourite celebrity or influencer.”

The response? “I now treat varicose veins with a minimally-invasive method called Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) which can be delivered under local anaesthetic and enables the patient to leave the clinic on the same day as their treatment.” Another ‘tweakment’ no one need know about.

What makes a man ugly?

October 28, 2018 by

ShortList

The five most requested cosmetic procedures for men, according to Harley St consultants.

Man boobs

Dr Dennis Wolf, cosmetic doctor at The Private Clinic

“Advancements in technology mean we can treat men with conditions such as gynecomastia – the enlargement of male breast tissue. It affects more than 15 per cent of adult men in the UK. As you can imagine, it can significantly affect self-esteem. There’s a greater understanding of the treatment options available – and less of a stigma attached to it.”

Tummy Fat

Dr Wolf

“It’s now incredibly common to treat men in their late fifties and early sixties. These are men who’ve maintained healthy, active lifestyles but have reached an age where exercise and diet alone might not be enough to maintain the body shape and contour they once had. For them, Vaser liposuction allows them to achieve the look they’d like, without the need to undergo major surgery.”

Baldness

Dr Wolf

“Hair transplants are among the most common requests we receive. It’s become much more accessible for men. The advancement of follicular unit extraction means that transplants can now be delivered under local anaesthetic, without the need for a hospital stay or lengthy recovery time. Patients can often leave the clinic on the day of treatment and return to work.”

Hairy chest

Samantha Scott, clinic manager at The Private Clinic

“The majority of our male clients tend to have darker and denser patches of hair on the upper body – shoulders and upper chest are extremely common areas to treat. Men can feel exposed or embarrassed if they have very thick or dark hair, particularly in the summer months. Others look to reduce the amount of hair on their body simply because they find it more aesthetically pleasing.”

Veiny legs

Constantinos Kyriakides, consultant vascular surgeon at The Private Clinic

“There’s a common misconception that varicose veins only affect women. In reality, between 25 and 30 per cent of men are affected by them too. I see men in their early twenties, through to those in their sixties and seventies. Many of them are uncomfortable showing their legs in public, particularly those whose veins  are very severe.”

Londoners are still forking out for boob jobs despite the Brexit vote

November 24, 2016 by

Evening Standard

Londoners are still forking out for facelifts and boob jobs despite the Brexit vote, according to the boss of a plastic surgery firm, which on Monday unveiled plans to open its first hospital.

The European Union referendum result has caused a slowdown in luxury spending by Brits but Valentina Petrone, chief executive of The Private Clinic, insists demand for cosmetic surgery remains robust.

“There is always a worry that a challenging financial climate might have an impact on spending, and Brexit has added an element of uncertainty,” Petrone said.

“However, this sector has proven to be very resilient to adverse financial environments, and it was true throughout the recession. So I feel quite confident about it.”

The Private Clinic, based in Harley Street and owned by private-equity firm BlueGem, plans to open a state-of-the-art day admission hospital in Fitzroy Square, including two operating theatres — which the clinics don’t have.

The group has just bought Aurora Clinics, making it the UK’s second-biggest cosmetic surgery group, with 140 staff in 12 clinics.

The Private Clinic opens new plastic surgery specialist hospital

December 8, 2016 by

Aesthetics

The Private Clinic has launched a £1.6 million hospital specialising in liposuction and plastic surgery in Fitzroy Square, London.

The new facility, which has taken more than a year to construct, includes two operating theatres, enabling a wide range of treatments and procedures to be carried out on the premises including breast surgery, blepharoplasty, liposuction and ear correction surgery.

“This has been the most complex project we have embarked on since 2008 when I joined as CEO of the business, but I could not be more proud of what we have achieved,” said Valentina Petrone, CEO of The Private Clinic Group.

Established in 1983 in London’s Harley Street area, The Private Clinic has grown to employ more than 140 staff and has 12 locations nationwide.

The launch of the Fitzroy Square facility comes just months after The Private Clinic completed the acquisition of Aurora Clinics; Petrone said that the opening demonstrates the company’s commitment to its patients. “Having access to this incredible facility in central London will mean we can offer greater availability to our patients and better care, thereby ensuring that their journey with us is impeccable from beginning to end. We have made it our mission to provide outstanding care and customer service and believe that this new facility will be a unique space within the cosmetic surgery sector, one which will provide patients with the very best experience,” Petrone said.
