FUE Hair transplant

FUE Hair Transplant – Greg Eden

April 16, 2021 by

© @Gregeden1 Instagram

Greg Eden is an English professional rugby league for the Castleford Tigers. He came to visit us at our clinic in Leeds to discuss his concerns with his hairline. Greg had been considering a hair transplant for the past 6 months after noticing receding patches to his hair line.

“I noticed my hair at the front had started to disappear a little bit. I am 30 years old now, so it is probably getting to that time where you start losing it. I just thought I would be one step ahead and just catch it before it goes.”

Greg has his first consultation with Dr Raja over zoom which allowed him to find out more about the FUE Hair Transplant procedure and what to expect before attending a consultation in-person at our clinic in Leeds. It was during this consultation that our expert hair transplant surgeon Dr Furqan Raja was able to discuss what could be achieved and worked with Greg to map out a new natural hairline to ensure he achieved the most natural results.

Greg Eden returned to the Leeds clinic a few weeks following his consultation to have his FUE Hair Transplant treatment. The treatment involves taking donor hair from the back of the head and transplanting it back into the recipient area which was the hairline in this case.

Greg was initially worried about feeling pain during the procedure but was pleasantly surprised, as many of our patients are, that aside from the first anaesthetic injection – the rest of the procedure was pain free and he was able to sit back and relax whilst Dr Raja got to work creating his new hairline.

In the majority of hair transplant cases, Dr Raja will see his patients again at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. We can’t wait to see Greg Eden in clinic again to hear how he has been getting on and see his results.

“From the first consultation, all the way through to the procedure everyone has been so helpful.”

Importance of Donor Area in Hair Transplant

November 22, 2019 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

There are three important factors to achieving a good result from a hair transplant procedure. A natural looking result, good coverage and efficient use of the donor area. Of course these factors will always be dependent on the skill and precision of your surgeon but it should always be their priority to reduce any trauma to the donor area and avoiding depletion.

What is a donor area?

The donor area for hair transplants is located at the back and sometimes the sides of the scalp. The hair that grows in his area is known to be genetically resistant to male pattern baldness the effects of male hormones such as DHT. The stable hair growth that occurs in the donor area makes the hair ideal for transplantation as it is permanently growing and will remain unaffected.

Your hair transplant surgeon will seek to extract the strongest follicles of hair as this will determine the final results from the procedure. Hair follicles that have good strength, volume and are robust will help to ensure that the patient achieves the best results.

How is the donor hair removed?

It is important when extracting the donor hair that it is done in a precise manner which takes a high level of skill. This ensures that the donor area and hair is not damaged during the procedure.

During a follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant procedure the surgeon will use a specialised punch device, ranging in diameter from 0.6mm – 0.9mm. This device will make very small entry points into the scalp to extract follicular units complete with necessary glands. This technique also separates surrounding tissue from the unit which results in minimal trauma to the donor area and better results.

A follicular unit transplantation (FUT) hair transplant procedure involves cutting a strip of skin from the donor area before then extracting individual follicular units. This is why FUT Hair Transplants are also known as strip harvesting. The donor area will require stitches and often results in a linear scar in the donor area.

What is donor area depletion?

Donor area depletion is when the donor area of the scalp is overharvested. When the donor site is overharvested it can cause damage to the area resulting in the hair follicles becoming low quality meaning they will not be able to be used again in any other further hair transplant procedures. Overharvesting can also cause baldness in the donor area which can then be very difficult to restore. Overharvesting can occur in large hair graft procedures that are carried out too quickly.

How can I avoid overharvesting?

The best way to avoid overharvesting is communication with your surgeon. Don’t be afraid to ask them about overharvesting and listen to what they have to say on the topic. A skilled surgeon should be able to reassure you and is likely to schedule multiple hair transplant sessions should they feel it to be necessary in order to maintain the quality of your donor area.

How to take care of my donor area?

Following a hair transplant procedure, patients will be provided with a list of aftercare advice. It is really important that this is followed to ensure the best healing. Medications should be taken on time and alcohol should be avoided for at least a week following your procedure – smoking too!

Your entire head should not be exposed to excessive direct sunlight for 3-4 weeks after transplant and we recommend wearing a loose hat to ensure protection from other elements such as rain.

Will there be scarring in my donor area?

All hair transplant procedures carry the risk of scarring in the donor area. FUT Hair Transplants will often result in a visible linear scar running across the donor area.  Scarring following a FUE Hair Transplant is a lot more minimal and can appear as very small circular white dots that may be noticeable when the head is shaved.

Our highly experienced hair transplant surgeons will work very hard to ensure that all scarring is kept to a minimum allowing patients to wear their hair as they wish following a hair transplant procedure at The Private Clinic.

Our surgeons also offer hair transplant scar repair where hair transplant procedures are carried out with the aim of reducing the appearance of scarring on the scalp that may have occurred from a former hair transplant procedure, injury, birthmark, burn or other skin condition.

Step by step guide to a hair transplant procedure at harley street

November 21, 2018 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

With up to 50% of men experiencing some degree of hair loss hair transplant procedures are becoming increasingly popular. A lot of people know the before and after results of a hair transplant but  many patients come us wanting to know more about what is actually involved in the process. Here at The Private Clinic we have a team of industry leading expert surgeons offering a modified FUE method; making very small entry points into the scalp. To help you make a more informed decision we have put together a step by step guide of a FUE Hair Transplant journey.

Step 1 – Your Consultation

Your first step to getting an FUE Hair Transplant is your consultation. Your consultation may initially take place with one of our patient advisors who are very experienced in the procedure and can answer many of your questions. You will need to have a consultation with one of our hair transplant surgeons before being able to book your procedure. This gives you the chance to firstly meet with the surgeon, discuss your hair loss and go through your medical history before they are able to analyse your hair and assess your suitability for a hair transplant. It is important that your hair follicles are the strongest they can be to ensure a successful hair transplant so your surgeon may suggest a course of medication ahead of your surgery.

Step 2 – Preparing the scalp

As your procedure day approaches you will be required to shave your hair. Some patients choose to this gradually in the months leading up to their procedure date but others may wait until the day and have this done in clinic. Having a shaved head allows your hair transplant surgeon to mimic the natural angle and direction of native hairs and minimize transaction rates. However; in some cases it is possible to perform a partially shaven or unshaven hair transplant and this can be discussed and decided in your consultation.

Step 3 – Pre Checks

Arriving at the clinic for your hair transplant you will be required to fill in some paperwork consenting to the procedure and this will all be explained to you by the nurses assisting the procedure at the clinic. You will also have your pre-operative photographs taken which will be held by the clinic. Your surgeon will then run through the procedure steps again with you and answer any questions that you have.

Step 4 – Anaesthetic

Before your procedure starts you will have local anaesthetic injected into the scalp in order to make the extraction and grafting of the hair painless and comfortable for the patient. This part may sting initially but many patients are surprised about how quick it takes and it will take affect almost instantly. You will be conscious during the entire procedure so if at any time you are feeling uncomfortable or want to take a break you will be able to communicate this.

Step 5 – Extraction of Follicular Units

An FUE Hair Transplant procedure starts with the extraction which involves using a specialised punch device, ranging in diameter from 0.6mm – 0.9mm to puncture the skin around the follicle 1-2 millimetres from the surface and the hair follicle bulb is then removed using fine forceps with the aid of a powerful magnifying glass to ensure precision.  Once the hair follicle bulb has been removed it is then placed into a glass tray and kept in a solution to keep them at a perfect range of hydration, temperature and humidity until the extraction process is complete.

Step 6 – Harvesting the Grafts

Once the extraction process in complete then you are usually given a break for lunch where you will be given the chance to stretch your legs and have something to eat. The Private Clinic will provide patients with lunch, snacks and drinks throughout the procedure so do let the team know of any dietary preferences ahead of the procedure.

During this time your surgeon will be starting to examine the extracted grafts and make a selection into which ones are suitable for use and which are not. They are then separated into groups by thickness, size of the bulb and number of hairs to make sure that there is enough variation to provide the patient the most natural looking result.

Step 7 – Implantation of the grafts

Once your surgeon and their team have selected all the grafts you will then be ready for the implantation stage of the FUE Hair Transplant procedure. You may need to have your local anaesthetic topped up at this stage to ensure that the procedure is still pain-free and comfortable. Each follicle is then manually implanted into the recipient area of the scalp by your hair transplant surgeon. The implanter tool will firstly penetrate the skin before the hair follicle bulb is then placed 1mm below the surface into the in the intradermal layer of the scalp. The number of hair grafts being inserted will vary between each patient and in large cases this stage of the procedure may take place over 2 days.

Step 8 – Aftercare

The next step of the FUE Hair Transplant procedure is all down to you as the patient. Once the process is complete, your surgeon will bandage your head up and go through a full aftercare routine which you will need to follow. You will be advised to avoid touching your new hair grafts for the first 3 days which includes wearing a hat. You will need to spray the new follicles every half hour which will prevent the formation of scabs and keep your new hair follicles well hydrated. You will also then be given medication that you will need to take as prescribed by your surgeon. The initial healing of the donor area will take 5-7 days and at this point any redness or swelling should have subsided. Your surgeon may request to see you at this stage to check that everything is healing correctly.  Taking proper care of your newly transplanted hair for the next 12 months is a really important part of your FUE Hair Transplant procedure to ensure that you achieve the best results. You will be given a series of post-op appointments throughout this time where your surgeon will be able to check your results and provide any additional information on how to care your new hair follicles.

Step 9 – Final Results

After 12 months your FUE Hair Transplant journey should be near enough complete. You will have noticed a difference to your hairline or hair density in the areas treated. A hair transplant is designed to last for decades as the hair taken from your donor area is known to be resistant to male pattern baldness. However, it is important to remember that other untreated areas of your scalp may still be prone to male pattern baldness so over time thinning and baldness may occur in these areas which could result in an additional hair transplant procedure being needed. Our surgeons at The Private Clinic are highly experienced and will take care to foresee any potential future hair loss patterns to ensure that your results are long-lasting.

What can a hair transplant do for me?

July 5, 2018 by Steffanie Griffiths Leave a Comment

If you’re thinking about a hair transplant, you might be wondering what can be achieved and how, when you would see results, if there is any scarring involved, and if you are suitable for the procedure in the first place. We have you covered on all you need to know, referring to some of the differences involved with FUE and FUT hair transplants.

What can be done?

A hair transplant is able to take hair from your donor area (usually the back of the scalp – where your hair is plentiful) and transplant it within areas of hair loss.

And how does a hair transplant work exactly? It depends on the hair transplant technique used. However,  FUE (follicular unit extraction), the advanced, popular technique, available at The Private Clinic, extracts healthy, individual hair follicles from your donor area, with their necessary glands, using a very fine, specialist punch device. The grafts (extracted hair follicles) are subsequently transplanted into hair loss areas marked out by your surgeon. These areas often include the hair line, sides, and crown of the head. However after a detailed assessment of your scalp, your surgeon will advise the suitable areas for transplantation in your case.

If you select FUT (follicular unit transplantation) for your procedure, the traditional hair transplant method and more invasive technique, a strip of tissue will instead be excised from your donor area. The donor area will be closed using stitches, and the strip of skin removed will be cut into follicular units and grafted into place.

The new grafts once healed are completely natural as they are your own growing hairs that simply have been moved from areas that you need it less.

When can I see results? With FUE, results begin to appear approximately four to six weeks post treatment, with final results revealing after six to twelve months. With FUT, you will see new follicles growing 2 to 3 months in, and after a year final results will be shown.

Natural-looking results

This is where your choice of a highly skilled and experienced surgeon and their approach is extremely important. At The Private Clinic, our world renowned FUE surgeons are able to achieve results that are natural-looking, with denser packing with their unique technique. Our specialists ensure grafts are implanted at angles and density corresponding with the natural existing hair growth of the patient. So, when new hair follicles start to grow, they will mimic the surrounding hair follicles’ characteristics. Choosing only healthy units additionally ensures the affected area will appear densely filled.

The choice of U-FUE, the Unshaven Hair Transplant

For those preferring not to shave their head pre-procedure, U-FUE , a variant of FUE, allows hair to be unshaved pre-hair transplant. We’re proud to say our surgeons are the only hair transplantation specialists UK-wide offering the innovative procedure. A highly delicate treatment requiring significant technical skill, we have spent several years perfecting the specialist method. Are you suitable for the treatment? This can be advised by an expert surgeon at your consultation.

Scarring Involved

The scarring you can expect depends on the hair transplant technique chosen. If you choose a FUE hair transplant, you will be left with minimal scarring that will be virtually undetectable. Only when the donor region is shaved to be very short, small circular scars may show as small white dots. The precision and slenderness of the punch device used, allows them to heal quickly, allowing them to be hardly visible.

FUT, comprising of surgical removal of a strip of the scalp, will leave you with a linear scar at the back of the head. This is visible with short hair and puts you at risk of thickened or stretched scars, or keloid scars.

Am I eligible for a hair transplant?

You may be wondering if you are eligible for a hair transplant in the first place. Only your surgeon will be able to advise if a hair transplant is the best option for you, during a hair transplant consultation, and many factors will have a role in this decision. At The Private Clinic, offering the FUE hair transplant method, determining factors will include the patients’:

  1. Age: There is no real age limit, but the best candidates tend to be over 27-30 years old, as younger patient may require additional treatment later on as their hair loss still continues naturally
  2. Donor Area: A good, healthy supply of hair follicles for transplantation is required. We can only use the hair you have for transplantation. The donor area is often the lower back part of the scalp or side of the head. Although, at The Private Clinic, we may be able to use hair from other bodily areas in some cases
  3. Hair Loss Type: The cause of hair loss affects your suitability for the procedure. The best candidates have male or female pattern baldness, usually affecting only particular areas of the scalp, rather than the entire scalp
  4. Health: Hair transplant patients must be in good health, through making health life choices, and medically

Has Donald Trump had a Hair Transplant?

February 15, 2018 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Recent news stories have prompted many questions surrounding Donald Trump’s hairstyle and if he has, in fact, had a hair transplant.

Videos show Donald Trump boarding a plane when an unfortunate gust of wind blows his hair revealing, what many have reported to ne an incision line on his scalp and a very obvious sign of thinning hair in the back of the scalp.

So has Donald Trump had Hair Transplant?

It is difficult to tell and without Donald Trump admitting it himself I don’t think we will ever know the answer but the scar that we can see on the back of his head does arouse some suspicions.

A FUT (Follicular unit transplants) Hair Transplant could cause scarring to the back of the head however the position of the scar is debatable. Others have commented that rather than a Hair Transplant, Donald Trump instead most likely had a scalp reduction.

Scalp Reduction is not a procedure that is commonly performed these days and is usually reserved for extreme cases of alopecia or traumatic burns to the scalp. Back in the 1980s however, scalp reduction was a popular procedure for ‘treating’ baldness. The procedure involves removing a section of skin from the scalp before it is sewn back together, essentially stretching the skin that contains healthy hair follicles with the premise of moving the follicles on the scalp closer together to give the impression of a full head of hair. This procedure was very invasive and painful for the patients who often had long recovery times too so you can see why it is not commonly used anymore.

These days, if you are struggling with hair loss aside from visiting a trichologist the main procedure you would be looking into would be a hair transplant.

FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

An FUE Hair Transplant, in particular, is the more favoured hair transplant method due to its minimally invasive approach and shorter recovery periods. During an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedure hair follicles are removed using a specialised punch device that separates surrounding tissue from the follicle, meaning minimum trauma. These follicles are then transplanted into the areas that are thinning or receding in an artistic way to replicate your hairs natural growth.

Wayne Rooney Before After Hair Transplant The Private ClinicCelebrities such as Wayne Rooney, Calum Best, Brian McFadden and James Nesbitt have all admitted to having FUE Hair Transplants and Wayne Rooney’s story in particular really opened up the world to seeing that hair transplants do not look how they once did and they can be done in a really natural and dignified way without looking fake. When asked about hair transplants, many will think back to FUT (Follicular unit transplants) otherwise known as the strip method as this procedure requires a strip of the scalp to be surgically removed from the donor area before the hair follicles are then carefully dissected from the tissue under a microscope, before being transplanted into the bald patches. This method often caused scaring at the back on the head which is visible when hair is short. The new FUE procedure removes the need for this scar making it a preferred option when it comes to deciding which hair transplant procedure is right for you.
