Follicular Unit Extraction

All the information you need about Hair Transplants

March 27, 2019 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Many of us take our hair for granted, not truly knowing the upset it can cause when you notice your hair thinning out or your hairline receding. There are a variety of products and supplements out there that can help to restore thicker looking locks but if the hair has been lost then often the damage has already been done. In these cases, a hair transplant is usually the treatment of choice for many men. Hair transplant procedures are consistently growing in popularity and we have put together a source of all the information you need to know before making the decision to proceed.

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure designed to restore hair into areas on the scalp that are thinning or receding. Donor hair is taken from the back of the head and reinserted into the areas that are being treated. There are a few different types of hair transplant procedures, FUE and FUT being the most common techniques.

FUE follicular unit extraction hair transplant

FUT otherwise known as Follicular Unit Transplantation or strip harvesting involves taking a strip of hair from the back of the scalp which is then cut and divided into separate hair follicles which are then inserted back into the scalp into the areas being treated.

FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplant procedures require the surgeon to make multiple small entry points using a specialised punch device into the back of the scalp to take hair follicles directly from the donor area. The follicles are then prepared and placed back into the areas being treated.

At The Private Clinic, we have been perfecting our FUE technique over the past 10 years and we are able to achieve the most natural results. Many patients are put off by the risk of being left with a long linear scar at the back of the hair following a FUT transplant and for this reason, more and more patients come to us for FUE.

Hair Transplant UK Reviews

“I had an FUE hair transplant a week ago today and I cannot thank the team enough. The whole process was effortless and the team took really good care of me. My procedure was with Dr Tam who explained the procedure in detail and really put me at ease. The procedure it’s self was a surprise as it was completely painless, I was expecting some discomfort but I was wrong. To be honest I could have fallen asleep that’s how relaxed I was. I’ve already had visible growth in my new hairline which myself and Dr Tam spent time designing. I can’t wait to see the full and final results. For anyone looking at having this procedure, I would highly recommend the private clinic. It’s definitely one of the best decisions I’ve made, after years of covering up my hairline I am finally going to get my confidence back. Massive thanks to Dr Tam who has undoubtedly changed my life. Thanks to his team who helped with the procedure although I’m sorry that I cannot remember your names. Also thanks to Louisa and Nabeel who have communicated and supported me through my procedure.”

Elliott, Bristol – TrustPilot

The best thing about having my FUE hair transplant at the private clinic in Harley Street was the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. From the first consultation to the procedure itself they give you the best care possible and genuinely care about their work. They set you at ease immediately which makes everything run smoothly. I would like to thank Henry, Umar, Bev and of course Dr Reddy for the way they treated me. I could have not chosen a better option. Thanks to the team and for anyone in 2 minds about a procedure, go for it … this team is the best.

Greg, London – TrustPilot

After looking at plenty of clinics for a hair transplant I settled on The Private Clinic in Leeds after reading the great reviews. From the initial consultation with Dr Mouzakis, Sorena and Nabeel to the day of my transplant the team have been superb. The surgery was practically painless and I am very happy with my new hairline, all the team were constantly ensuring I was ok and were very professional. The aftercare I have received has been great and I’ve had phone call already to check how I am. I like also like knowing that I can phone at any time if I need any advice.

Sean, Leeds

Why Choose The Private Clinic for a Hair Transplant Procedure?

  • You will be treated by highly experienced Doctors. Our Hair Transplant surgeons are highly skilled in FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and treat hundreds of patients every year.
  • FUE is a minimally invasive treatment (meaning there is no cutting of a strip), and carried out under local anaesthetic – many patients either watch TV, or even fall asleep during the procedure.
  • You won’t require any stitches after your treatment. This means that the recovery time is also reduced when compared to the Strip surgery (FUT).
  • We use the finest instruments, resulting in as minimal trauma to your scalp as possible.
  • Thanks to our advanced skills and techniques, our team ensure that the donor looks intact after the hair transplant procedure and you can keep your hair really short if you prefer without any obvious scarring.
  • Following treatment, there will be no linear scarring across the back of your head as seen with the strip method (FUT) – you’ll be free to wear your hair long or short.
  • We choose the best follicular unit (a group of hairs), this ensures that only the strongest, healthiest grafts are used for your hair transplant procedure.
  • Your results will look natural, with denser packing – the hair is implanted in the direction that matches your hair growth.
  • We are one of the very few clinics able to offer the Unshaven Hair Transplant (U-FUE) (the long-hair hair transplant), to those who prefer not to shave beforehand. At your consultation, we will be able to advise you on whether an unshaven procedure is suitable for you.
  • Scars resulting from injuries or previous surgeries can also be corrected. In fact 30% of all patients that come to us have been somewhere before and need further work to improve on a disappointing result. This could be a previous bad hair transplant or we can cover linear scars caused from FUT hair transplants.

Why are busy business men choosing London Harley Street for Hair Transplants?

August 20, 2018 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

We have noticed a steady increase of professional business men choosing our London Harley Street clinic for their FUE Hair Transplant procedure. They have been tempted by the cheap offers that hair transplant clinics abroad have been able to offer but have felt the risk to be too large in relation to their work-life. Here at The Private clinic we are able to offer all of our hair transplant patients an expert service and results.

Consultations with Hair Restoration experts

Men say that they like the personal touch that having a hair transplant in the UK offers. You will be able to have as many hair transplant consultations with our team of hair restoration experts who will be able to offer you the best advice on your hair transplant options as well as offer any advised medication and an estimation on grafts to give you the best result. When booking a hair transplant procedure abroad – it is often the case that you will not meet or even speak to your hair transplant surgeon until the day of your surgery meaning you will not have access to all of the information or know the treatment plan until moments before it takes place. We want our patients to feel well-informed before their procedure and you will always be able to contact us post-consultation if you have any further questions before your procedure is due to take place.

Hair Transplant Surgeon Skill and Experience

When it comes to choosing a hair transplant surgeon you will be looking at their skill and experience and this will be one of the main reasons you have chosen them to perform your hair restoration procedure. Those that choose to have their procedure abroad may have chosen a great sounding surgeon but may be shocked to find their hair transplant being carried out by nurses who are not professionally trained in the technique or worse still – staff with no medical qualifications whatsoever. At The Private Clinic our surgeons are highly experienced and qualified in hair restoration, performing FUE Hair Transplant procedures on a regular basis.

Hair Transplant Aftercare

One of the biggest reasons that men are choosing to have their hair transplant procedure at London Harley Street instead of abroad is our professional level of aftercare. A hair transplant is still a surgical procedure and treating your newly transplanted hair correctly post-operatively is crucial to ensuring the best results. At The Private Clinic we are able to offer you as many post-operative care and appointments with your Hair Transplant surgeon and nursing team as you require and our 24 hour patient helpline ensures you are always in the best of hands. If you have your hair transplant abroad you may find it difficult to get back in contact with your surgeon and making any follow-up appointments may come at an additional expense should you have to travel back.

Hair Transplant Cost

The cost of hair transplant procedures abroad are often the biggest selling point and many patients will opt for having their procedure done abroad rather than paying for it in the UK. The real cost of a hair transplant abroad is often not seen until you have had the procedure. Many men come to visit us at The Private Clinic not happy with the results of their cut-price hair transplant procedure and some even have extensive scarring caused by the procedure being performed by an unqualified technician. In order to get the results you originally wanted, you may find yourself paying out again to fix the work/rectify the mistakes made previously. Many of our patients don’t want to take the risk of a cheap hair transplant and would rather pay more knowing they are going to receive a premium service with expert care and results.

Why choose The Private Clinic for a FUE Hair Transplant?

  • Outstanding results, don’t take our word for it, see our Trust Pilot reviews click here
  • 24 hour patient helpline to ensure you are always in the best of hands.
  • As many post-operative care and appointments with your Hair Transplant surgeon and nursing team as required.
  • Highly experienced Hair Transplant Surgeons.

Robotic vs FUE Hair Transplant Procedures

March 19, 2018 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Robotics and hair transplants are relatively new hair transplantation technique and there is a lot of information online about robotic hair transplants as well as manual hair transplant procedures. In this blog we are going to look at robotic hair transplants and see how they compare to the FUE procedure that we offer here at The Private Clinic.

What is a Robot Hair Transplant?

A robotic hair transplant may also be called an R-FUE or ARTAS. The actual technique of the robotic hair transplant is the same as an FUE hair transplant procedure however half of the procedure is performed robotically rather than manually.

The procedure starts of just like a standard FUE hair transplant procedure would with the donor area being shaved and local anaesthetic being administered to the area. A skin tensioner is then applied to the donor area which aids in the precision of the technique.  The robotic system then uses cameras to get footage of the donor area and then using image processing software it is then able to identify the different properties of the hair follicles. Once the footage has been processed it is ready to start extracting hair follicles from the donor area using a robotic arm and small dermal punches. The surgeon is able to make adjustments to help make the process more precise when necessary.  Once loosened the hair follicles are collected by the surgeon and the technique returns back to a standard FUE procedure where the follicles are prepared before being manually transplanted into recipient areas.

What is a FUE Hair Transplant?

An FUE procedure extracts individual hair follicles from the donor area which are then grafted into areas that are bald or thinning. The ARTAS system has essentially been built to replicate the FUE hair transplant procedure that is traditionally performed manually by your hair transplant surgeon.

We favour the FUE Hair Transplant technique here at The Private Clinic as a minimally invasive hair transplant procedure that aims to give the patients natural and undetectable results.

Robotic vs FUE Hair Transplant Procedures

When it comes to comparing the two procedures there are a range of pros, cons and differences to take into consideration. The biggest difference is that the entire FUE procedure is performed manually compared to the Robotic technique where half of the procedure is performed automatically and only the transplantation section of the procedure is performed by your surgeon. The patients that are suitable for Robotic hair transplants using the AARTAS machine can be limiting as it is often only used on patients who are dark straight hair. FUE Hair transplants can be performed on patients with a variety of hair textures including African or Caribbean hair. AARTAS also uses punches that are larger in diameter compared to manual FUE punches which does open the risk to healing complications and the potential to damage nearby follicles.

At The Private Clinic your hair transplant will be performed by one of our experienced hair transplant surgeons who will analyse your scalp, hair growth and hair texture so that they are able to personalise your hair transplant procedure in order to best achieve your desired results.  We work by hair, not per graft – this ensures that only the strongest, healthiest follicles are selected for your transplant procedure. Your donor hair is a limited source which is why we work by hair, not per graft ensuring that only the strongest, healthiest follicles are selected for your transplant procedure.

We understand that many people will have different options on which methods can offer the best results which are why we highly recommend doing your research about the different options and meeting with surgeons to discuss all the options available.

How does an FUE Hair Transplant work?

October 16, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

FUE Hair Transplants are always steadily rising in popularity and the normality of it also is increasing thanks to the likes of celebrities such as Wayne Rooney, James Nesbitt and Calum Best who have all admitted going through hair transplant procedures to improve their declining hairlines.

Despite this, the knowledge around Hair Transplants, in particular FUE Hair Transplants is limited with many of us not really knowing how or even why an FUE Hair Transplant works.

James Nesbitt Before and After Hair Transplant Treatment

Here at The Private Clinic, providing you with plenty of information about all the procedures we offer is our priority and in our blog today we are going to cover how an FUE Hair Transplant works and briefly what is involved within the procedure, but we have plenty more information on our website and videos that cover this in more detail too.

FUE Hair Transplant

An FUE Hair Transplant is also known as a follicular unit extraction transplant and involves taking individual hair follicles from a donor area, usually the back (or side) of the head.  The individual follicles are then implanted back into the balding areas on the head.

How does a FUE Hair Transplant work?

An FUE Hair Transplant works by being able to remove only the healthiest and most robust of individual hair follicles from the donor area which is most typically the back of the head, sometimes the sides.

These donor hair follicles are then transplanted one by one back into the balding areas (of the scalp for example) that are being treated. At The Private Clinic our surgeons are highly experienced in creating the most natural looking results by carefully placing the follicles at the same angles and in the same directions as your natural hair growth.

FUE Hair Transplants have a very high success rate as each individual hair follicle is taken from areas of the scalp where there is healthy and permanent hair growth. Donor hair is often taken from the back of the head which is an area of the male scalp that is resistant to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) which is the usual cause of balding in the front and crown of the head – also known as male pattern baldness.

When the DHT resistant hair follicle is placed in the new area, it still retains this element meaning your new hair growth should remain permanent unless it was genetically meant to fall out.

The transplanted hairs also successfully root in your recipient area as it is your own hair. There is a common misconception that hair from another will be used and this is certainly not the case.

Why choose The Private Clinic for an FUE Hair Transplant?

  • Minimally invasive treatment, carried out under local anaesthetic.
  • We use the finest instruments, resulting in as minimal trauma to your scalp as possible.
  • Highly experienced Hair Transplant Surgeons who have many years of experience in FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and treat hundreds of patients every year.

  • Our advanced skills, methods and techniques mean results can be undetectable.
  • Minimal scarring post-surgery means you’ll be free to wear your hair long or short afterwards.
  • We ensure that only the strongest, healthiest follicles are selected for your transplant procedure by working by hair, not per graft.
  • Hair is implanted in the direction that matches your hair growth meaning your results will look natural, with denser packing.

The Cost of a FUE Hair Transplant in London

October 11, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

When it comes to researching a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant there is a variety of information that you want to know including the type of procedure required, the surgeon and most importantly in some cases how much is a hair transplant cost.

When it comes to giving you a cost for an FUE Hair Transplant you may struggle. A lot of surgeons and advisors will refuse to give you a cost before you come in for a consultation. This is not a sales technique and they are not being difficult – it is important to understand that costing for a hair transplant is very individual and will depend on a number of factors which can only be assessed during a consultation.

We do understand however that it is helpful to at least have an idea of how much you need to start saving so we have answered some of the most common cost-related questions for FUE Hair Transplants in London;

What is the average cost of an FUE hair transplant at The Private Clinic in London?

We treat our patients on a case-by-case basis so you will only be able to get an accurate figure of how much an FUE Hair Transplant will cost you by coming in for a consultation and scalp assessment. Each patient’s needs are different and we like to work by hair not graft ensuring that only the strongest and healthiest follicles are transplanted resulting in the best results possible.

At The Private Clinic, the average cost of an FUE Hair Transplant at our London Harley Street Clinic is £2.50 per hair. The pricing structure for FUE Hair Transplants at our Leeds, Manchester, Northampton and Birmingham clinics may differ slightly so please contact us for more information.

How does the cost of an FUE Hair transplant vary depending on the area chosen?

The cost of an Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE) Hair Transplant depends on the area or areas of the head that the patient would like to treat. There are most commonly three sections;

  • A-Zone – Frontal core, hairline and temples
  • B-Zone – Mid-core
  • C-Zone – Crown

The area of your scalp being transplanted can alter the cost of your FUE Hair Transplant. For example; if you are having your hairline or temples treated, this area is smaller compared to if you were having your crown treated which means the number of hairs will differ.

Hair loss can also vary between patient to patient which is why we prefer our patients to come in for an individual assessment where we can give you an accurate cost for your FUE Hair Transplant.

FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

Does cost of FUE hair transplants differ from cost of FUT hair transplants?

An FUE Hair Transplant is the most minimally invasive method of carrying out a hair transplant due to the advanced technique and experience of the surgeons required the cost of an FUE Hair Transplant will on average be more than a FUT Hair Transplant. But the benefits of an FUE Hair transplant more than cover the additional expense.

What are the payment plans at The Private Clinic?

The Private Clinic offer a variety of different flexible payment plans and finance options including 12 months at 0% interest. Click here to find out more about our finance option packages.

What are the dangers of the cost of low priced hair transplants?

The quality of the work carried out, the experience and ethical approach of the surgeon and medical team could be far less reputable from a low priced hair transplant, which could potentially reflect in the final result of the hair transplant.

If the treatment is not a success, there is a danger that further treatment in the future may not be possible, this is because of the damage caused to the donor area.

What are safe low-cost alternatives to an FUE Hair Transplant?

We do offer alternative treatments to an FUE Hair Transplant and these include FDA approved medications such as minoxidil (5%) lotion and finasteride (oral medication)

These are the only FDA approved medications available to patients and are both advised by the majority of all the hair transplant surgeons that work at The Private Clinic.

The medications are just a precautionary measure to help slow down and potentially stop further hair loss from developing. They can also thicken up the finer hairs which although will only be able to achieve 10% of what a full FUE Hair Transplant can achieve, in some cases it is enough to approve a patients appearance.

It is worth noting that medications are not able to grow new hair, in those instances, you will need an FUE Hair Transplant but we do advise that patients take either of these medications for 6 months and in some cases, they notice a visible improvement.

Please note that any references to cost in this blog are average costings only. To get a more accurate quote for your FUE Hair Transplant you must book a consultation as everyone is different. It is always quite tricky to give quotes on areas as it depends on the severity of the hair loss.

Assess your hair loss with the Norwood Scale

August 16, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

The Norwood scale is mentioned a lot when it comes to diagnosing the extent of hair loss. It has been used since the 1970s and is quite simply a series of images that depict the different stages of male pattern hair loss.

The Norwood scale is a topic that comes up often in hair loss consultations and we admit it can be a little confusing on first glance which is why we have come up with a way to help you understand the Norwood types featuring some familiar faces;

Norwood Type 0

Hair Loss Norwood Type 0

This is often left off the majority of scales used in consultations; it is quite rare for someone to have a Type 0 hairline, especially grown men and it is debateable if it even exists or not. Norwood 0 hairlines indicate that there is no recession at all and they can sometimes descend slightly at the corners. Even a young boy often has a slight recession along the edges of their hairlines so if your hairline is referred to as Type 0 then you should consider yourself very lucky.

A good example to visually show a type 0 hairline is to look at David Shwimmer especially during his time playing Ross from Friends.  Another good example is Simon Cowell.

Norwood Type 1

Hair Loss Norwood Type 1

A type 1 hair loss refers to minimal hair loss and is often reminiscent of a juvenile hair line so you most likely have not had any noticeable changes since your youth. Type 1 hairlines often indicate a very slight recession along the corners of the hairline and they usually have a rounded appearance. Some good visual examples of a type 1 hairline would be Jay Z, Eminem, Matthew Fox and even Brad Pitt although the latter two are gradually becoming a Type 2.

Norwood Type 2

Hair Loss Norwood Type 2

A type 2 hair loss is known as the mature hairline and it is the natural recession that the vast majority of men will experience and unfortunately that is just the natural progression of ageing. You may notice that your hairline has receded 1 to 1.7cm cm and your hairline corners may also recede resulting in a v shape pattern. At this stage, it is not considered to be male pattern baldness and it is unlikely that you would be considered for treatment. Some visual examples include Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio but most men between the ages of 17 and 30 will be sporting a similar hairline too.

Norwood Type 3

hair loss Norwood Type 3

A type 3 hair loss is the first stage when we would consider treating you for a hair transplant. It is known as the first stage of balding and is actually the most common pattern of balding which can take on a variety of appearances depending on the severity including the M and U-shaped varieties which are both usually easily treatable. At this stage it is also quite easy at this stage to change your style and your hairline to make the balding less noticeable.  Some visual examples for a type 3 hairline are Bryan Cranston, Sting and Tom Hanks.

Norwood Type 4

hair loss Norwood Type 4

If you have a type 4 hair loss your hairline will have most likely receded quite far back towards the top of your head. You may have also noticed balding areas elsewhere like on the back/crown of your head. A good visual example of this stage of hair loss is actor, Jude Law who has more recently been sporting a fuller head of hair but rumours of a potential hair transplant are still unconfirmed.

Norwood Type 5

hair loss Norwood Type 5

A type 5 hair loss is often defined as having no hair at the front of your head and the balding area on the crowd of your head will be of a larger scale. You will still have hair around the sides of your head however. A good visual example of this stage of hair loss is actor Michael Kelly, most notably known for his time playing Doug Stamper from Netflix show House of Cards.

Norwood Type 6

hair loss Norwood Type 6

A type 6 hair loss generally means that your hairline essentially has disappeared and there is only sparse hair remaining on the top of the head. Hair loss around the sides may have extended further. A good visual example of this stage of hair loss is former UK Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.

Norwood Type 7

hair loss Norwood Type 7

A type 7 hair loss is the most severe stage of hair loss; any remaining hair will take on a typical horseshoe shape around the sides and back of the head.  The remaining hair will most likely be fine and sparse.  A good visual example of this stage of hair loss is Curb Your Enthusiasm Star, Larry David.

We hope these guides have helped to give you an idea to better understand the Norwood Scale. Your surgeon will be able to explain the scale in more detail at your consultation.

FUE Hair Transplants at The Private Clinic

The Private Clinic’s Hair Transplant and Hair Restoration surgeons have the most extensive experience in treating Male Pattern Baldness with the minimally-invasive, no visible scarring, no stitch technique known as FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplantation and have treated hundreds of patients each year. FUE is a minimally invasive treatment carried out under local anaesthetic and unlike the strip (FUT) procedure, you won’t require any stitches. Thanks to our advanced skills and techniques results can be undetectable and the recovery time is minimal compared to previous strip surgery.

After surgery you will be free to wear your hair long or short as there will be no linear scaring across the back of your head and you will instead have natural results with denser packing as the hair is implanted to match your natural hair growth and only select the healthiest follicles to use.

Our surgeons are also the only surgeons in the UK to be able to offer the Unshaven Hair Transplant for those who prefer not to shave their head beforehand.

The Private Clinic prides itself on ensuring you have the best quality and most comprehensive care:
