Hair Transplant

Bad week for… vegans’ hair

March 2, 2016 by

Coach Magazine

Vegan diets could be responsible for hair loss, according to Dr hair transplant surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, due to missing out on key nutrients found in meat, dairy and fish. Dr said the clinic had seen an increase in patients coming in with problems directly related to their vegan diet. *

7 myths about female hair thinning you should stop believing

March 2, 2018 by

NetDoctor

We’re talking ponytails and birth control.

Worried about hair thinning? You’re not alone, with 50% of the population now suffering from some form of hair loss. But before you start fearing the worst, it’s important to sort fact from fiction.

We caught up with a hair loss specialist Dr at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, to bust the most common myths around female hair loss.

1. Washing your hair too much can cause hair thinning

“There is a common misconception that washing your hair frequently is bad,” says Dr. “On the contrary; hair needs to be washed regularly to keep it clean and healthy. Evidence suggests that using the right products to maintain a healthy scalp as well as to strengthen hair can play a significant role in providing thicker, fuller hair. Regular conditioning is also good for the hair as it will make it softer, but make sure you apply it to the hair shaft and not the scalp.”

2. All hair loss is permanent

“Not all hair loss is permanent,” Dr explains. “If external factors such as diet, stress or over-styling are causing the hair to thin then this can be rectified by a change of lifestyle. If it’s an underlying medical condition, a specialist doctor can recommend treatment. However, if the cause is genetic then the loss is, unfortunately, permanent. In these specific cases, the only way to regain the hair that is lost is with a hair transplant procedure.”

3. Hair thinning only affects women with thin or fine hair

“Hair thinning can be triggered by a number of factors including genetics, medical conditions such as hormonal deficiencies or imbalance, stress, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, PCOS, diet, stress and weight loss,” says Dr . “Any of these factors can contribute to hair thinning and hair loss and they definitely don’t only affect women with thin or fine hair.”

4. The main cause of female hair loss is genetics

“Genetics do play a big part – just like men, women can inherit genes from their mother or father which leave them predisposed to hair loss,” Dr says. “But it’s important to note that, unlike baldness in men, hair loss in women is almost always caused by an underlying medical condition. Your first step should always be to seek the advice of a hair loss specialist in order to determine the cause. This can be your stylist as a first point of call.”

5. Wearing your hair in a ponytail has nothing to do with hair thinning

“Not true,” Dr explains. “You should exercise caution when wearing your hair in a tight ponytail and when wearing hair extensions too. Try not to do either excessively as they will pull the hair and weaken it. If you continue to cause stress to your hair by over-styling, braiding and/or using hair extensions, this could lead to traction alopecia – a condition brought about by environmental damage done to the hair.”

6. Birth control pills can contribute to hair loss

“This one is half true,” says Dr. “Birth controls pills can provoke thinning and in some cases, hair loss too. The good thing is that most of the time the hair loss or thinning is reversible. It’s important to say here that not all women on birth control pills will be affected by hair thinning and if they are, the degree of hair loss will vary case by case. Birth control pills can cause the hair to move from the growing phase to the resting phase too soon. This form of hair loss is called telogen effluvium. Furthermore, if baldness runs in your family, birth control pills can speed up the hair loss process.”

7. Changing your diet won’t make a difference

“Hair is made up of keratin, which is a natural protein. Making sure your diet is high in protein can therefore help to keep hair strong and looking shiny and healthy. Try to incorporate meat, fish and eggs into your diet (if you’re a vegetarian or vegan, look to high-protein foods such as quinoa, soy, lentils and beans) and you may gradually notice an improvement.

Vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin D, biotin, iron, magnesium, niacin and zinc in will also help to contribute to strong and healthy hair, along with a diet rich in grains, fruits and vegetables.”

10 Things Men Should Know About Preventing Hair Loss

October 12, 2016 by

Ask Men UK

Losing your hair, however old you are, is an unwelcome part of the male ageing process. However, the truth is, by the time we hit 50, over half of the male population have experienced hair loss, with many men starting to lose their hair as early as their 20s and in some cases, even in their late teens. The bad news is that hair loss is hereditary. So if your father or grandfather is thin on top, then the chances are you will be too. Equally, if they started to bald early, then you may also find yourself on the path to premature hair loss.

There have also been great advancements in treatments for hair loss in recent years. I perform the Third Generation FUE transplant treatment at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, which is the most advanced method available. The good news, however, is that there are some practical steps you can take to try and slow down the hair loss process before resorting to a transplant treatment.

Here are my top ten tips to follow if you are worried about a receding hair line.

No.10 – Keep your cool

Dr Reddy says: Avoid traumatising your hair with heat. Turn the shower down a notch and wash hair in warmish water rather than very hot, and let your hair dry naturally if possible. If you must blow dry then it helps to towel dry first, and if you can avoid the temptation to borrow your girlfriend’s straighteners, then all the better.

No.9 – Eat meat

Dr Reddy says: Hair is made up of keratin, which is a protein. By making sure you have a reasonable amount of protein in your diet, you’re giving your thinning locks much more of a fighting chance, and the best way? Eat lots of meat.

No.8 – Keep hair clean

Dr Reddy says: With the average amount of dust, smoke, and dirt that you’re exposed to on a daily basis, the idea of not washing your hair on regularly is something that you shouldn’t be entertaining. Washing your hair at least once a day will help avoid a build up of sweat or dirt which can block pores and hair follicles.

No.7 – Keep your hands off

Dr Reddy says: The scalp and hair follicles are sensitive to rough treatment, and being hacked at by your sharp finger nails isn’t a good idea. Try not to scratch your scalp with finger nails as this can damage it.

No.6 – Use a conditioner daily

Dr Reddy says: Conditioner makes your hair softer and helps prevent breakage. Make sure the conditioner is applied to the hair shafts, not the roots, and is rinsed out thoroughly.

No.5 – Take it easy on the styling products

Dr Reddy says: Lathering your scalp with gallons of styling product may be a good idea if you’re looking to achieve a towering Jedward-like quiff, but if you want to keep those locks then you need to think twice before dunking your head in Brylcreem. Only apply gel to the hair shafts to avoid clogging up the pores and follicles on the scalp.

No.4 – Keep it in the shade

Dr Reddy says: For years we’ve been warned against the harmful UV rays of the sun. We’ve been told to wear sunscreen to protect our skin, sunglasses to protect our eyes, but we’ve never been told to protect our hair. If you’re worried about thinning hair wear sun screen on your scalp or a hat to protect if you’re going to be out in the strong sun.

No.3 – There are products that can help

Dr Reddy says: There are preventative measures for hair loss, but there are also many products which have also been proven to help. If you are concerned about hair loss then you may find that over-the-counter products, such as Regaine, can help.

No.2 – See your doctor

Dr Reddy says: Medical conditions like anaemia and thyroid abnormalities can cause hair loss. If you are worried then it is a good idea to see a doctor to rule these conditions out.

No.1 – Get the blood flowing

Dr Reddy says: It has been said that standing on your head can help by increasing the blood supply to your scalp which in turn can help encourage hair growth. However, an easier (and more enjoyable) way to achieve the same thing is through a head and scalp massage. If you can convince your other half to administer daily, it’ll be worth it even if it doesn’t have an impact on hair growth.

FUE Hair Transplant Results after 3 Months

December 3, 2018 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

FUE Hair transplant procedures are great at restoring a hairline or filling out thinning hair but the best results are seen from those who have taken the best care during their recovery time. Hair transplants will always involve a certain amount of time for the recovery, healing and growth of the news hairs and patients in clinic frequently ask us how long it takes for the hair to regrow.

How long does it take for hair to grow after a FUE Hair Transplant?

You will be able to see the new outline of your hairline immediately following your hair transplant procedure but there is a recovery process involved meaning it can take up to 12 months for your final results to be seen.

0 – 7 days post FUE Hair Transplant

Immediately after your hair transplant you will be able to visually see the shape of your new hairline but this is not your final result. The follicles have been implanted into their new positions but there is a process of recovery they need to go through before you can start accurately judging your final results. You may start to notice some scabbing around the newly implanted hair follicles but your hair transplant surgeon will give you a spray to try and reduce this but the scabs will be very small and will heal quickly over a few days.  You may also notice some swelling on the back of the head in the donor area. Swelling is only temporary and will reduce over a matter of days post procedure. Redness may be present over the graft implant site and you may experience some tenderness or soreness which can be managed with pain relief medication.

Your surgeon will give you a full list of aftercare advice which may include things like elevating your head whilst sleeping and when you can wash your hair post procedure. We recommend that you follow the surgeon’s recommendations and then both the transplanted and donor areas will settle down within 5-7 days.

Many patients return to work within 1-2 days after their procedure but some many prefer to take a week off to fully recovery if their workplace is unaware of your procedure or if your work is particularly strenuous.

Exercise including heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 10 days and we recommend not using steam rooms, saunas and any other activities that might cause excessive sweating too.

We also recommend that patients do not drink alcohol for around 7 days as this can affect the blood supply to your scalp which can affect the rate in which your transplant heals.

2 weeks post-procedure

Two weeks after your FUE Hair Transplant you may notice some hair loss in the areas treated. Your surgeon will have advised you on this, this is a very normal and common side effect from the procedure often referred to as shock loss. It just means the old hairs are falling out and there is no issue with your grafts taking root.

3-5 Months post-procedure

You may not notice a huge change to your FUE Hair Transplant results at 3 months. After your initial shock loss, your new hair will only be growing 1cm per month so it is going to take a little bit of time before it begins to resemble the result that you were hoping for. At 4-5 months your hair should have grown enough so you will be able to start to see what the final appearance is going to look like. You should continue to look after your new hair follicles as advised by your surgeon for 18 months post procedure. Your hair in the donor area should have fully grown back by this stage too.

1 year post procedure

As 12 months approaches your new hairs should have established themselves and be growing at a normal rate acting the same as your other hair follicles. After 12 months you will be able to have your hair trimmed or dyed.

The results of a hair transplant can take up to 18 months to fully be visible.

2 years post procedure

FUE Hair Transplants are permanent hair restoration procedures and aim to achieve lifelong results. At 1-2 years post-procedure no one should be able to notice that you have undertaken a hair transplant procedure and you will be completely free to have your hair in whatever style you choose.

FUE Hair Transplant Reviews

“I Had a FUE hair transplant last year at the Harley Street clinic. I was apprehensive at the consultation, wondering if it would work so only asked for half of the recommended hairs from the donor area, 1000 grafts (3000) hairs. On the day of procedure I had an excellent experience with Dr Reddy and all the staff. Now almost twelve months later achieved good results and will be going back for some more hair.”

William John – London

After looking at plenty of clinics for a hair transplant I settled on The Private Clinic in Leeds after reading the great reviews. From the initial consultation with Dr Mouzakis to the day of my transplant the team have been superb. The surgery was practically painless and I am very happy with my new hairline, all the team were constantly ensuring I was okay and were very professional. The aftercare I have received has been great and I’ve had phone call already to check how I am. I like also like knowing that I can phone at any time if I need any advice.

I would recommend Dr Mouzakis and the Leeds team to use for a hair transplant.

Why choose The Private Clinic for your Hair Transplant procedure?

  • You will be treated by highly experienced Doctors. Our Hair Transplant surgeons are highly skilled in FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and treat hundreds of patients every year.
  • FUE is a minimally invasive treatment (meaning there is no cutting of a strip), and carried out under local anaesthetic – many patients either watch TV, or even fall asleep during the procedure.
  • You won’t require any stitches after your treatment. This means that the recovery time is also reduced when compared to the Strip surgery (FUT).
  • We use the finest instruments, resulting in as minimal trauma to your scalp as possible.
  • Thanks to our advanced skills and techniques, our team ensure that the donor looks intact after the hair transplant procedure and you can keep your hair really short if you prefer without any obvious scarring.
  • Following treatment, there will be no linear scarring across the back of your head as seen with the strip method (FUT) – you’ll be free to wear your hair long or short.
  • We choose the best follicular unit (a group of hairs), this ensures that only the strongest, healthiest grafts are used for your hair transplant procedure. See our Hair Transplant videos here.
  • Your results will look natural, with denser packing – the hair is implanted in the direction that matches your hair growth.
  • We are one of the very few clinics able to offer the Unshaven Hair Transplant (U-FUE) (the long-hair hair transplant), to those who prefer not to shave beforehand. At your consultation, we will be able to advise you on whether an unshaven procedure is suitable for you.
  • Scars resulting from injuries or previous surgeries can also be corrected. In fact 30% of all patients that come to us have been somewhere before and need further work to improve on a disappointing result. This could be a previous bad hair transplant or we can cover linear scars caused from FUT hair transplants. Find out more here.
  • We treat Afro-Caribbean hair loss, as well as eyebrows, beard and facial hair. In addition, due to the knowledge and precision of our team, we can utilise body hair in hair transplants if you have a lack of suitable donor hairs on your scalp.
