Former BAAPS President Rajiv Grover, who compiles the audit on an annual basis has released a statement saying that “The 2019 BAAPS audit is very positive from our point of view as it shows that whilst the overall number of procedures has dropped, the work we’ve been doing to educate about the life-changing implications of cosmetic surgery and the need to reflect carefully before taking this route is working. We’re seeing greater emphasis from surgeons on psychological assessment, as mental health awareness has taken centre stage both politically and in the news agenda which is so important when putting patient’s interests first.”

We agree with this statement and at The Private Clinic we always put patient’s well-being and safety at the forefront of what we do. We have also been doing a lot of research into non-surgical procedures to help patients reach their goals without having to commit to the downtime that surgery often comes with.

Other popular procedures in our clinic have included:

Breast Auto Augmentation

This procedure is becoming very popular with women who are seeking implant removal but still wish to maintain an uplifted and pert appearance following removal of their implants. A breast auto augmentation involves relocating the patients natural breast tissue and moving it upwards within the breast to fill out the upper pole.

Preservation Rhinoplasty

Preservation Rhinoplasty was another new additional to our procedure offerings in 2019 with Mr Dario Rochira pioneering the new rhinoplasty technique at our Harley Street clinic. The technique is a lot less invasive than traditional rhinoplasty surgery and involves a precise remodelling technique to change the structure of the nose without breaking the nose and preserving the nasal ligaments. A preservation rhinoplasty also boasts a decreased recovery time and minimal bruising and swelling making it ideal for patients who are not keen to hide away for weeks following surgery. Find out more here.

Teardrop Implants

Breast augmentations are still one of our most popular procedures at The Private Clinic however the desired goals of the patients have changed. Women are now seeking smaller and more natural shaped implants such as teardrop implants. We believe this simply is a sign of the times with lifestyles becoming more active and the trend of having larger breasts is now less desired in comparison to smaller and more in proportion breast sizes.

Introducing our new Ear Correction Surgery UK

September 18, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Although it is only thought that 1-2% of the UK population have prominent ears, the way in which it can negatively impact people’s lives can cause it to be a serious issue.

Prominent ears can cause those affected to have low self-confidence and just generally feel unhappy about their appearance. At The Private Clinic we are excited to launch a new treatment that offers an alternative way to correct prominent ears without the need for general anaesthetic and downtime.

Earfold ® (New Ear Correction Surgery)

EarFold® is the name of a small implant that has been designed to reshape prominent ears quickly. The implant itself is curved so once it has been inserted into the ear it will spring into shape holding your ear in its new position. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and unlike an Otoplasty/Pinnaplasty you will have a chance to choose how your ears will look before the surgery takes place.

How an EarFold® compares to an Otoplasty Procedure.

Recovery TimeUp to 7 days (bruising & swelling)Up to 6 weeks
Procedure time20 Minutes1-2 Hours

An Earfold® implant is made from a highly elastic material called nitinol which is commonly used within medicine. The implant is then coated with 24-carat gold which helps to reduce visibility under your skin.

An EarFold® implant will be suitable for anyone with poor development of the antihelical fold which is actually the cause of the majority of prominent ears. If your ear prominence is down to having a deep conchal bowl however, EarFold may not be suitable for you but a consultation with one of our specialist surgeons will be able to assess your suitability.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty or Pinnaplasty as it is also known, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to resize, reshape or reposition prominent ears.

An otoplasty can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic depending on your individual case. During the procedure your surgeon will make an incision along the crease-line located behind your ear. They will remove excess cartilage that is causing your ears to protrude before then pinning it back along the fold setting it into its new position closer to your head.

You will need to take some time off work after an Otoplasty to ensure your safety and recovery. You will also be required to wear bandaging 5-7 days to help support the wound and it can take up to 6 weeks for full recovery.

Ear Correction Surgery What to Expect?

May 5, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Ear correction surgery is also known as an Otoplasty or a Pinnaplasty and it is a surgical procedure that aims to reshape the ear if you are unhappy with their appearance, size or position.

This surgical procedure is usually performed on children however it is not unusual for adults to consider the operation at a later date.

So ear correction surgery– what should you expect?

Will I need local or general anaesthetic?
The procedure itself can actually be performed under a local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic depending on individual cases.

How long does the procedure take?
An otoplasty procedure would usually take between 2-3 hours.

What scars will I have?
There should only be minimal scaring, if any after ear correction surgery. Our surgeons make sure that incisions are made within the natural lines and creases of the body so that scarring is normally unnoticeable. Sometimes when the ear is resized or reshaped it is possible that a thin white scar may be visible where the cartilage has been reshaped.  Your surgeon will be able to discuss in more detail what scars are likely to appear depending on the technique they plan to use.

What is the recovery period like?
A standard otoplasty recovery timeline;

First 24 hours– You will be required to wear a mild compressive garment around your head.  If you do manage to catch a glimpse, your ears may appear or feel larger but this is due to the swelling.

24 to 72 hours– Although the initial compression bandages may be removed, you will still be required to wear a light head band around your ears for the next 1-2 weeks. The majority of your swelling will begin to reduce. You will be able to shower/bathe from the neck down without any restrictions however you should avoid washing your hair until at least 2 days after the procedure.

72 hours to First Week– Some patients feel happy to return to work at this point but this will depend on the swelling and what your job involves.

First Week to Second Week– At this point the swelling should have subsided and most patients feel comfortable to be in social situations and have returned to work and their normal activities. You will also be able to shower as normal at the end of the first week. After two weeks you won’t need to wear the headband at all times, just at night for another couple of weeks.

Three Months– Your swelling should be completely gone at this stage.

Top 10 Otoplasty FAQs

October 29, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

If you are unhappy with the size, shape or position of your ears then you may benefit from ear correction surgery which is a surgical procedure that can reshape and reconstruct the ear.

We have answered some of your top questions about the procedure and recovery afterwards.

Is there a difference between an otoplasty and a pinnaplasty?

If you have been researching ear correction you may have noticed that some refer to the procedure as otoplasty and others as a pinnaplasty. Are they the same thing?

You’ll be pleased to know that everyone is still talking the same language and there is no difference between an otoplasty and a pinnaplasty.

There is no difference, Pinna refers to the projecting part of the ear outside the head, oto means ear when combined with other words such as ‘ology’ or ‘plasty’ which then means moulding or reshaping of a defect to restore form and/or function to a body part.

otoplasty before after the private clinic

What makes me suitable for an otoplasty/pinnaplasty?

Despite being known as ear correction surgery, the procedure is not suitable for everyone. This is why it is important to do your research and go along for consultations with surgeons to work out your suitability and your realistic expectations.

Anyone with ears that are of normal size or shape with no obvious deformity apart from the prominence of them will be suitable for surgery. Those with lop ears for example or microtia will not be suitable for surgery.

I have had an otoplasty as a child, but I feel my ears are still prominent, can this be performed again?

Generally, a child will have ear correction surgery before the age of 5 and this is decided by the parents. When the child is between 5 and 13 they are usually not too worried about their appearance but then after age 13 there seems to be many favouring going ahead with surgery again. We are always able to operate again on the same area if you feel you need to have the procedure again, but always make sure you talk to your surgeon about your realistic expectations.

Am I too old for an otoplasty?otoplasty before after results

You may be thinking you’ve left it too late, or it is not worth having any more but age is just a number and if something is bothering you enough to even consider surgical options to treat it then it is well worth asking the question.

As long as you are fit and healthy then there is no age limit. As this type of surgery is an elective operation, we are a little stricter on health as we need to ensure that you are able to recover from the aesthetic.

How does an otoplasty work?

The procedure involves the surgeon reshaping the cartilage of the ear. The cartilage is what forms the ear underneath the skin. If you are born with misshapen ears, this is often corrected through the use of a splint in the first couple of days as the cartilage is very soft and mouldable with no need for invasive surgery.

Will an otoplasty affect my hearing?

An otoplasty will have no effect on your hearing. There are three parts to the ear; the pinna is the external ear, the middle ear which is behind the eardrum and then deeper in you have the inner ear balance. When you have ear correction surgery it will only affect the pinna region of the ear. After the surgery you will be required to wear bandages which cover your ears – this may reduce your hearing slightly but once you are allowed to remove these, your hearing will return to normal.

When will I be able to wash my hair after surgery?otoplasty-blog-hair-wash-the-private-clinic

When it comes to having any type of surgery, the recovery period can be difficult not just because of any discomfort but because when it comes to doing normal things like having a shower or bath, you may be restricted. We would suggest that before having surgery you do anything that you need to do – bath, shower, hair wash and shave the day before you are due in for surgery. This way you know that it has been done and a few days without being able to perform these actions should not be too traumatic for you! After ear correction surgery you will be required to wear a bandage or dressing for 3-4 days so during this time hair washing will be off limits. Once you have been given the go-ahead by your nurse or surgeon to remove these dressings you will be okay to wash your hair, but just take it easy.

Will I be able to play sports like rugby after an otoplasty (sports to avoid if applicable?)

Once recovered you will be free to play any sport, however we do recommend that you try and avoid any sports that cause excessive friction on the ear like rugby as although this shouldn’t cause your ears to return to their original state – it may distress the ear a little and may eventually lead to deformity that you can see on professional rugby players.

Will I be able to pierce my ear after an otoplasty?otoplasty-blog-piercing-the-private-clinic

Getting your ears pierced is vastly popular but if you have struggled with the appearance of your ears the thought of having any type of decoration on them may have felt terrifying with the fear of drawing additional unwanted attention. So once you have had surgery you may be considering a new piercing to celebrate your new ears.

There is no reason why you would not be able to have any piercings after ear correction surgery this includes lobe to cartilage piercing.

Is an otoplasty permanent?

Generally yes, as long as you take care during your recovery period then there should be no reason for your ears to revert back to their original state. Sometimes we do perform revision surgery if the patient decides the change is not enough which is more common if one ear protruded slightly more than the other. This is all comes down to realistic expectations however which is fully discussed with your surgeon during a consultation.

A guide to Plastic Surgery for men

March 1, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Women are chronically portrayed as the gender that cares and pays most attention to beauty, health, and style, but such stereotypes are being brought down daily because men aren’t blind to the fact that our society values youth and beauty – nor are men creatures devoid of vanity.

In fact, those eager to climb the corporate ladder know that in a competitive environment it’s important to use every advantage at your disposal while those already in successful posts want their features to reflect their confidence and position. For instance, the world’s first billionaire, John Paul Getty, had no qualms about having had a Facelift in the late sixties, and he was not only a very proud man but also a fierce negotiator to boot.

Men seeking plastic surgery procedures in the UK have doubled in the past decade, with celebrities’ openness about their cosmetic procedures definitely giving matters a helpful push in the right direction. What’s clear is that male plastic surgery has risen far above being a taboo – it’s been reported that in Brazil a man undergoes plastic surgery every two minutes!

So, let’s have a look at some of the most popular cosmetic procedures.

Blepharoplasty

Why opt for it?

Eyelid and Eye Bag Surgery are the most popular procedures among men and it’s pretty easy to see why – they’re:

• Swift – can be performed in as little time as 30 minutes and doesn’t require general anaesthesia.
• Safe – the procedures are straightforward, with a very high success and satisfaction rate.
• Convenient – the healing process is the quickest of all plastic surgeries, lasting as little as a couple of weeks.

Heavy skin and puffiness under the eyes can make you look tired even when you’re not, the results of a Blepharoplasty are quick to appear and will leave you with a fresh-faced appearance.

Blepharoplasty before and after
Before and after Blepharoplasty at The Private Clinic.

How does it work?

Excess skin around the eyes is removed, with incisions being made along the folds of your eyelids and leaving you with no visible scarring. The fat pads under your eyes are reduced to alleviate puffiness and since the incision is made inside the lower eyelid, there’s once again no scarring to be seen.

Rhinoplasty

Why opt for it?

Some people just aren’t happy with the way their nose looks, whether they were born with it or had it injured, whereas others have a deviated septum that’s causing them to experience breathing problems. Either way, Rhinoplasty is thought to have been around since Egyptian times, and since noses are our facial focal points, you might as well have one you like.

Before and after Rhinoplasty treatment by The Private Clinic's Mr. Davood Fallahdar.
Before and after Rhinoplasty treatment by The Private Clinic’s Mr. Davood Fallahdar.

How does it work?

A surgeon may decide to perform an open or closed Rhinoplasty, based on your individual case. During a closed Rhinoplasty, the surgeon can work from inside the nose, requiring very few incisions and keeping any possible scarring to a bare minimum. More complicated procedures may require an open Rhinoplasty, which relies on incisions at the nostrils to lift the nose’s skin, so as to allow the surgeon to work on the cartilage and bone underneath. By reshaping those elements, the size, lengths and tip of your nose can be altered with no visible scarring to worry about. The nose surgery procedure takes about two hours, with the length and price, depending on what you’re hoping to achieve.

Male Chest Reduction

Why opt for it?

Enlarged breast tissue (Gynecomastia) is often coupled with embarrassment for men but it’s a condition that’s attributed to as much as 40% of the UK male population. Even bodybuilders can develop them when if they use anabolic steroids or have a hormone imbalance.

Before and after MicroLipo treatment on the male chest.
Before and after MicroLipo treatment on the male chest.

How does it work?

Gynecomastia is usually treated with minimally invasive Liposuction like MicroLipo or VASER Liposuction to remove fatty deposits, whereas enlarged glandular tissue is removed through an incision in the lower part of the nipples. MicroLipo relies on fat being gently sucked out through extremely slender cannulas while VASER procedures first use ultrasound to break down fat cells before using suction.

Liposuction

Why opt for it?

A stressful and demanding career can leave you tired and without time to exercise or eat healthily, which is when you run the risk of gaining a few extra pounds. On the other hand, you can find yourself with stubborn pockets of fat that you can’t shape despite exercising regularly and leading a healthy lifestyle.

An example of VASER Hi-Def treatment performed at The Private Clinic.
An example of VASER Hi-Def treatment performed at The Private Clinic.

How does it work?

Once again, MicroLipo can be used to contour the body here and since the incisions through which the cannulas are inserted are no bigger than 0.3mm, there’s no need for stiches and there’s no scarring either. VASER Liposuction can yield interesting results as during the suction process your surgeon can sculpt your tissue to give you a certain level of definition the highest of which is VASER Hi-Def and can leave you with a ripped physique. Surgical Liposuction can be used to remove larger amounts of fat but it’s worth noting that we do not offer this procedure as a weight loss treatment.

Otoplasty and Earlobe Reconstruction

Why opt for it?

Projecting ears are seldom on a person’s ‘most wanted features’ list and often lead to unwanted remarks. Seeing as one in twenty British people think they have ears that project too much, ear surgery is understandably a very popular option. And if you have a ripped or stretched earlobe then you might consider them unsightly and want to fix them for aesthetic and/or practical reasons.

How does it work?

Incisions are made at the back of and within your ear so as to keep any scarring from being visible. Excess skin is removed and the cartilage behind the ear is altered to pin back ears that stick out too much. If their shape or size is being changed, then the cartilage of the outer ear will need to be reshaped. As for  the earlobe, any excess skin is cut off and the remainder is stitched up in such a way as to look natural when healed.

Facelift

Why opt for it?

It can be frustrating when your life is on track, you feel young and confident but your face doesn’t reflect it. Board members, CEOs and high profile businessmen such as Mr Getty may want their looks to match their status and could opt for a ‘Forbes Facelift’ to lift the neck as well as the brow, recontour the jawline, maybe use a little bit of Liposuction and combine it with a blepharoplasty for ultimate results.

How does it work?

Where your incisions are made will depend on the type of facelift you opt for, but typically they are made along the hairline and behind the ears. For Neck Lifts, the incisions are extended from the back of your ears to the lower part of your scalp. Your skin is lifted and the tissue beneath it repositioned before the excess is removed and the skin is redraped and secured.

Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck

Why opt for it?

Tummy Tucks get a lot of press and especially as being part of Mummy Makeover packages, but now is the time of the rise of Daddy Do-Overs! Mummies aren’t the only ones who want a flat tummy, and child rearing takes its toll on both parents, even if in different ways. Moreover, if you’ve gone through significant weight loss, then you might have unflattering leftover excess skin that you want to be rid off.

How does it work?

One incision is made just above the pubic mound and if full Abdominoplasty is required then one is made around the navel. Your loose abdominal muscles are pulled up and secured with sutures. The procedure is often combined with liposuction to remove any unwanted fat, after which the skin is replaced and the excess removed.

The Private Clinic, Manchester: Plastic Surgery Treatments

We realise that some results can only be attained surgically, so we have selected a wide range aesthetic treatment options for you to choose from.

Our Manchester clinic is one of four where we offer surgical procedures on top of our minimally invasive, walk in, walk out procedures, and the list below gives you an outline of the solutions available to you.

Facial Procedures

Blepharoplasty

Eyelid and Eye Bag Surgery is the darling of plastic surgery. It’s straightforward (lasting only 30mins at times), has very short recovery time (about one to two weeks) and has consistent, rejuvenating results. By removing any excess skin and fat, the surgery can help those with heavy, hooded or drooping eyelids, as well as those with puffiness and large eye bags under the eyes.

Blepharoplasty is particularly popular because it can be done under local anaesthetic and due to how swiftly the procedure is carried out. The eye-opening results speak for themselves.

Rhinoplasty

One of the oldest procedures around, Rhinoplasty is a very popular procedure that makes it possible to change the shape, size and length of a nose and its alar bases. Our surgeons make incisions inside your nose to then internally operate on skin, cartilage and bone to avoid visible scarring.

Otoplasty and Earlobe Correction

Ear surgery usually serves to pin back protruding ears although in some appropriate cases, their shape and size can also be altered. Earlobe Reconstruction, on the other hand, focuses on repairing sagging, stretched or ripped earlobes by removing excess skin and reshaping the remaining tissue.

Facelift

We offer numerous minimally invasive treatments that can push back the years on your face, but the results can never be as dramatic as those achieved through a surgical procedure. So, for those who have experienced advanced ageing and wishing to have low-maintenance, long-lasting results, then a bespoke Facelift procedure might be just the answer.+

The Mini Facelift is especially popular among those who want to manage the signs of ageing and have moderate amounts of excess skin. The cheeks and jawline can be redefined by removing unnecessary skin and visibly rejuvenate your face by giving it a fresher sand more open appearance.

Body Procedures

This procedure is designed to address ‘bingo wings’ by removing excess skin and fat, to then tighten any lax tissue. The treatment may be combined with Liposuction to create an even tone and precise definition.

Breast Augmentation

Known as the most popular cosmetic procedure in most countries, Breast Augmentation relies on silicone gel-filled implants to increase breast volume by placing them either behind or in front of pectoral muscles. Continuous technological advances mean that implants are becoming more malleable, resistant and safer as we move into the future.

Nipple Correction

If you have inverted nipples that don’t project and feel uncomfortable about them, then know that they can usually be corrected by releasing some of the milk ducts that might be pulling them inwards. Determining the cause of your inversion will determine the best way to go about treatment.

The procedure is a simple one that only requires the use of local anaesthetic. The recovery period is minimal, usually about a week, though some women have reported feeling like normal after just a couple of days.

Male Chest/ Female Breast Reduction

When a woman’s breasts are too large, they can turn into an emotional and painful physical struggle. Men suffering from Gynecomastia (A.K.A. ‘moobs’) won’t end up bent over backwards, but they can be affected psychologically and feel like their enlarged breasts are setting them back. Surgical Breast Reduction can help both to remove excess fat and breast tissue to reduce the volume in that area.

Breast Uplift

Sagging breasts can be addressed by removing excess skin to shape and position the breasts, but an Uplift also makes it easy to alter and reposition the areola. It can be combined with a Breast Reduction to make up for the loss of volume resulting from the procedure.

Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty

Famously at the core of the ‘Mummy Makeover’, Tummy Tucks are a straightforward way of removing excess skin, fat deposits and rectifying a drop in the underlying muscle. Mini versions of the treatment can also be performed if there is good muscle tone and mainly wants to address on the lower abdomen.

Labiaplasty

Showing your vagina’s labia (lips) to a stranger can be a daunting thought, which is why our surgeons treat patients with enlarged or stretched labia, with absolute respect and discretion. The treatment consists of removing excess skin– not the labia proper – in order to ‘tidy up’ that area.

Scarring

As a rule, during all of the above-mentioned procedures, our surgeons take great care to make incisions along the natural folds and fine lines of your skin, so as to minimise visible scarring as much as possible.
