A guide to Plastic Surgery for men

March 1, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Women are chronically portrayed as the gender that cares and pays most attention to beauty, health, and style, but such stereotypes are being brought down daily because men aren’t blind to the fact that our society values youth and beauty – nor are men creatures devoid of vanity.

In fact, those eager to climb the corporate ladder know that in a competitive environment it’s important to use every advantage at your disposal while those already in successful posts want their features to reflect their confidence and position. For instance, the world’s first billionaire, John Paul Getty, had no qualms about having had a Facelift in the late sixties, and he was not only a very proud man but also a fierce negotiator to boot.

Men seeking plastic surgery procedures in the UK have doubled in the past decade, with celebrities’ openness about their cosmetic procedures definitely giving matters a helpful push in the right direction. What’s clear is that male plastic surgery has risen far above being a taboo – it’s been reported that in Brazil a man undergoes plastic surgery every two minutes!

So, let’s have a look at some of the most popular cosmetic procedures.

Blepharoplasty

Why opt for it?

Eyelid and Eye Bag Surgery are the most popular procedures among men and it’s pretty easy to see why – they’re:

• Swift – can be performed in as little time as 30 minutes and doesn’t require general anaesthesia.
• Safe – the procedures are straightforward, with a very high success and satisfaction rate.
• Convenient – the healing process is the quickest of all plastic surgeries, lasting as little as a couple of weeks.

Heavy skin and puffiness under the eyes can make you look tired even when you’re not, the results of a Blepharoplasty are quick to appear and will leave you with a fresh-faced appearance.

Blepharoplasty before and after
Before and after Blepharoplasty at The Private Clinic.

How does it work?

Excess skin around the eyes is removed, with incisions being made along the folds of your eyelids and leaving you with no visible scarring. The fat pads under your eyes are reduced to alleviate puffiness and since the incision is made inside the lower eyelid, there’s once again no scarring to be seen.

Rhinoplasty

Why opt for it?

Some people just aren’t happy with the way their nose looks, whether they were born with it or had it injured, whereas others have a deviated septum that’s causing them to experience breathing problems. Either way, Rhinoplasty is thought to have been around since Egyptian times, and since noses are our facial focal points, you might as well have one you like.

How does it work?

A surgeon may decide to perform an open or closed Rhinoplasty, based on your individual case. During a closed Rhinoplasty, the surgeon can work from inside the nose, requiring very few incisions and keeping any possible scarring to a bare minimum. More complicated procedures may require an open Rhinoplasty, which relies on incisions at the nostrils to lift the nose’s skin, so as to allow the surgeon to work on the cartilage and bone underneath. By reshaping those elements, the size, lengths and tip of your nose can be altered with no visible scarring to worry about. The nose surgery procedure takes about two hours, with the length and price, depending on what you’re hoping to achieve.

Male Chest Reduction

Why opt for it?

Enlarged breast tissue (Gynecomastia) is often coupled with embarrassment for men but it’s a condition that’s attributed to as much as 40% of the UK male population. Even bodybuilders can develop them when if they use anabolic steroids or have a hormone imbalance.

How does it work?

Gynecomastia is usually treated with minimally invasive Liposuction like MicroLipo or VASER Liposuction to remove fatty deposits, whereas enlarged glandular tissue is removed through an incision in the lower part of the nipples. MicroLipo relies on fat being gently sucked out through extremely slender cannulas while VASER procedures first use ultrasound to break down fat cells before using suction.

Liposuction

Why opt for it?

A stressful and demanding career can leave you tired and without time to exercise or eat healthily, which is when you run the risk of gaining a few extra pounds. On the other hand, you can find yourself with stubborn pockets of fat that you can’t shape despite exercising regularly and leading a healthy lifestyle.

An example of VASER Hi-Def treatment performed at The Private Clinic.

How does it work?

Once again, MicroLipo can be used to contour the body here and since the incisions through which the cannulas are inserted are no bigger than 0.3mm, there’s no need for stiches and there’s no scarring either. VASER Liposuction can yield interesting results as during the suction process your surgeon can sculpt your tissue to give you a certain level of definition the highest of which is VASER Hi-Def and can leave you with a ripped physique. Surgical Liposuction can be used to remove larger amounts of fat but it’s worth noting that we do not offer this procedure as a weight loss treatment.

Otoplasty and Earlobe Reconstruction

Why opt for it?

Projecting ears are seldom on a person’s ‘most wanted features’ list and often lead to unwanted remarks. Seeing as one in twenty British people think they have ears that project too much, ear surgery is understandably a very popular option. And if you have a ripped or stretched earlobe then you might consider them unsightly and want to fix them for aesthetic and/or practical reasons.

How does it work?

Incisions are made at the back of and within your ear so as to keep any scarring from being visible. Excess skin is removed and the cartilage behind the ear is altered to pin back ears that stick out too much. If their shape or size is being changed, then the cartilage of the outer ear will need to be reshaped. As for  the earlobe, any excess skin is cut off and the remainder is stitched up in such a way as to look natural when healed.

Facelift

Why opt for it?

It can be frustrating when your life is on track, you feel young and confident but your face doesn’t reflect it. Board members, CEOs and high profile businessmen such as Mr Getty may want their looks to match their status and could opt for a ‘Forbes Facelift’ to lift the neck as well as the brow, recontour the jawline, maybe use a little bit of Liposuction and combine it with a blepharoplasty for ultimate results.

John Paul Getty, the world's first billionaire was known to have had a Facelift.
John Paul Getty, the world’s first billionaire was known to have had a Facelift.

How does it work?

Where your incisions are made will depend on the type of facelift you opt for, but typically they are made along the hairline and behind the ears. For Neck Lifts, the incisions are extended from the back of your ears to the lower part of your scalp. Your skin is lifted and the tissue beneath it repositioned before the excess is removed and the skin is redraped and secured.

Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck

Why opt for it?

Tummy Tucks get a lot of press and especially as being part of Mummy Makeover packages, but now is the time of the rise of Daddy Do-Overs! Mummies aren’t the only ones who want a flat tummy, and child rearing takes its toll on both parents, even if in different ways. Moreover, if you’ve gone through significant weight loss, then you might have unflattering leftover excess skin that you want to be rid off.

How does it work?

One incision is made just above the pubic mound and if full Abdominoplasty is required then one is made around the navel. Your loose abdominal muscles are pulled up and secured with sutures. The procedure is often combined with liposuction to remove any unwanted fat, after which the skin is replaced and the excess removed.

The Private Clinic, Manchester: Plastic Surgery Treatments

February 21, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

We realise that some results can only be attained surgically, so we have selected a wide range aesthetic treatment options for you to choose from.

Our Manchester clinic is one of four where we offer surgical procedures on top of our minimally invasive, walk in, walk out procedures, and the list below gives you an outline of the solutions available to you.

Facial Procedures

Blepharoplasty

Eyelid and Eye Bag Surgery is the darling of plastic surgery. It’s straightforward (lasting only 30mins at times), has very short recovery time (about one to two weeks) and has consistent, rejuvenating results. By removing any excess skin and fat, the surgery can help those with heavy, hooded or drooping eyelids, as well as those with puffiness and large eye bags under the eyes.

Blepharoplasty is particularly popular because it can be done under local anaesthetic and due to how swiftly the procedure is carried out. The eye-opening results speak for themselves.

Rhinoplasty

One of the oldest procedures around, Rhinoplasty is a very popular procedure that makes it possible to change the shape, size and length of a nose and its alar bases. Our surgeons make incisions inside your nose to then internally operate on skin, cartilage and bone to avoid visible scarring.

Otoplasty and Earlobe Correction

Ear surgery usually serves to pin back protruding ears although in some appropriate cases, their shape and size can also be altered. Earlobe Reconstruction, on the other hand, focuses on repairing sagging, stretched or ripped earlobes by removing excess skin and reshaping the remaining tissue.

Facelift

We offer numerous minimally invasive treatments that can push back the years on your face, but the results can never be as dramatic as those achieved through a surgical procedure. So, for those who have experienced advanced ageing and wishing to have low-maintenance, long-lasting results, then a bespoke Facelift procedure might be just the answer.+

The Mini Facelift is especially popular among those who want to manage the signs of ageing and have moderate amounts of excess skin. The cheeks and jawline can be redefined by removing unnecessary skin and visibly rejuvenate your face by giving it a fresher sand more open appearance.

Body Procedures

Arm Lift

This procedure is designed to address ‘bingo wings’ by removing excess skin and fat, to then tighten any lax tissue. The treatment may be combined with Liposuction to create an even tone and precise definition.

Breast Augmentation

Known as the most popular cosmetic procedure in most countries, Breast Augmentation relies on silicone gel-filled implants to increase breast volume by placing them either behind or in front of pectoral muscles. Continuous technological advances mean that implants are becoming more malleable, resistant and safer as we move into the future.

Nipple Correction

If you have inverted nipples that don’t project and feel uncomfortable about them, then know that they can usually be corrected by releasing some of the milk ducts that might be pulling them inwards. Determining the cause of your inversion will determine the best way to go about treatment.

The procedure is a simple one that only requires the use of local anaesthetic. The recovery period is minimal, usually about a week, though some women have reported feeling like normal after just a couple of days.

Male Chest/ Female Breast Reduction

When a woman’s breasts are too large, they can turn into an emotional and painful physical struggle. Men suffering from Gynecomastia (A.K.A. ‘moobs’) won’t end up bent over backwards, but they can be affected psychologically and feel like their enlarged breasts are setting them back. Surgical Breast Reduction can help both to remove excess fat and breast tissue to reduce the volume in that area.

Breast Uplift

Sagging breasts can be addressed by removing excess skin to shape and position the breasts, but an Uplift also makes it easy to alter and reposition the areola. It can be combined with a Breast Reduction to make up for the loss of volume resulting from the procedure.

Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty

Before and after a Tummy Tuck at The Private Clinic

Famously at the core of the ‘Mummy Makeover’, Tummy Tucks are a straightforward way of removing excess skin, fat deposits and rectifying a drop in the underlying muscle. Mini versions of the treatment can also be performed if there is good muscle tone and mainly wants to address on the lower abdomen.

Labiaplasty

Showing your vagina’s labia (lips) to a stranger can be a daunting thought, which is why our surgeons treat patients with enlarged or stretched labia, with absolute respect and discretion. The treatment consists of removing excess skin– not the labia proper – in order to ‘tidy up’ that area.

Scarring

As a rule, during all of the above-mentioned procedures, our surgeons take great care to make incisions along the natural folds and fine lines of your skin, so as to minimise visible scarring as much as possible.

New Year, Better You

January 5, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Along with the new year comes that ‘January feeling’, which means you’re probably motivated and full of hope for the future. Many will say that it’s time for a ‘new you’, but some of you might actually want the ‘old you’ back, as you may feel like you’ve left the best version of yourself in the years gone by.

So this year, we propose that instead of trying to become someone completely different, you build on who you already are, to become a better, more confident you – be that by enhancing your current features or restoring ones that you’ve lost.

We’re here to help you meet your goals, by offering you an unbiased and honest advice on a range of treatments, which have been known to offer life-changing results.

Stubborn fat

The January rush sees people going on diets and racing off to the gym in record numbers, and for those of you who stick to it, you might notice that there are certain areas of fat that just refuse to budge, no matter what exercises you attempt.

In such cases we often advise our patients to consider or  MicroLipo. This minimally invasive form of Liposuction is performed under local anaesthetic, through incisions so small that they don’t require stitching up post-op, meaning that there’s minimal risk of scarring. Best of all, the tiny cannulas used to remove your unwanted fat don’t cause any damage to surrounding body tissue. You’ll be back in the office in just two days’ time with none the wiser.

However, if you’re looking to remove a larger amount of fat, or if you’re after a toned and defined shape, then VASER Liposuction might be a better option for you.

The procedure makes use of ultrasound to decompose fat cells – without targeting any other tissue – which is then removed through a suction process. There are a number of VASER levels to choose from on top of the standard procedure, which will depend on the results you’re after.

With VASER Hi-Def you can achieve an elite athletic figure with chiseled abs, whereas the Mid-Def procedure offers results less extreme than those of Hi-Def, but more pronounced than that of standard VASER Lipo. Finally, with VASER 360 we can sculpt the length of your legs so that you’re left with firmer, slimmer legs that suit your overall body shape.

A single area for both MicroLipo and VASER Lipo, would require an investment starting from £2,600, but you’ll receive an accurate quote at the time of your consultation.

Nip and Tuck

We’ve partnered with some of the most reputable and experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeons in the UK, in order to offer you a huge range of options to choose from – ensuring that you find the procedure that’s most suitable for your needs.

A recent survey by the RealSelf cosmetic surgery review community explored the big beauty trends predicted for 2016, with Breast Augmentation still seemingly reigning supreme. Smaller breasts are in vogue now, pleasing our surgeons, as they always aim to deliver natural and proportionate results suitable for you. The implants we prefer have a reputation of being the of the highest quality and our patients can expect to pay between £4,700 and £5,200 on average for the procedure, although pricing is always judged on a case-by-case basis.

Mommy Makeovers will be as popular as ever, but it seems that patients will now want to include vaginal rejuvenation in their package. Childbirth and ageing can change the appearance of your most intimate area and as we realise that this can be a sensitive process, you can rest assured that you’d be attended to with the utmost professionalism and discretion. You can expect the treatment cost to start at £4,000, although a definite quote will be given to you during your consultation.

Finally, we have a range of treatments to peel back the years and combat the effects of aging, comprising of a number of Facelift options (including the Non-Surgical Facelift) and other skin tightening treatments such as the Arm Lift (starting from £5,400) or the Tummy Tuck (prices for a mini-tummy tuck start at £4,500 and £5,840 for a full one).

The inside scoop on VASER Liposuction, MicroLipo and unwanted fat

December 2, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

As we age, our fat can slowly settle into certain areas and become very difficult to shift even for regular gym-goers. How fluctuations in weight affect your body comes down to several factors, but an interesting one is the fat cells themselves.

Like traditional Liposuction, VASER Lipo and MicroLipo use suction to remove fat from your body, but one of the things that set this technique apart is how fat is removed during the procedure and the shorter recovery times associated with VASER and Micro Liposuction. To better understand how to attain and keep your results following these procedures, it’s important to know how your fat cells (Adipocytes) work.

The transition from childhood to adulthood

Your fat cells are more subject to change when you’re a child and this is most true when it comes to cell division (Mitosis). While our childhood bodies develop, Adipocytes grow and multiply. The more a child eats the bigger their fat cells become and once they reach their maximum capacity, they divide. A cell divides into two new cells and if those two expand and divide as well, then you can see how that sets you at an early disadvantage.

adipose

After puberty, these cells cease to divide, but if you have a lot of them to begin with, it’ll be much more difficult for you to control your weight. Or rather – it’ll be much easier for you to gain weight, as you’ll have much more cells that require replenishing through calories. The role of Adipocytes isn’t merely to cushion and insulate your body; most significantly they store the energy that allows us to function.

adam adipocytes

In 2008, Swedish researchers published findings in the journal Nature, reporting that 10% of our cells die each year and are replaced with new ones. They found that even after weight reduction surgery, obese people had the same amount of fat cells two years on, meaning that controlling your food intake is key to weight consistency.

What happens to fat during MicroLipo and VASER Liposuction?

One of the first things steps for a practitioner during both procedures is to inject the treated area with tumescent fluid. The amount of anaesthetic used can be five times that of the fluid and tissue that will ultimately be removed, but it serves to protect the area from infection and to isolate the fat in question.

VASER tools.Still001
Doctor fastens the VASER Liposuction tip.

Once that’s done, the VASER instrument is inserted through small incisions and the fat is emulsified using ultrasound wavelengths specially designed to target it. The last step is to suction it all out while the doctor adds definition with his hand.

Over the next few weeks, you have to wear a compression garment while you experience some swelling and your skin tightens to adapt your new figure. Your blood and lymphatic systems will work during that time to eliminate whatever liquid remains.

Before and after MicroLipo to the thighs
Before and after MicroLipo to the thighs at The Private Clinic.

With MicroLipo, a number of minuscule incisions are made in the area to be treated, then tiny cannulas less than 3mm in diametre are inserted into them. A slow suction process allows for delicate fat removal that requires very little downtime or trauma – the incisions don’t even require stiches. Downtime depends on the area you have treated, with some patients resuming work 48 hours after treatment.

Attaining and maintaining your Liposuction results

These procedure aren’t weight loss solutions, they are body-shaping tools. The most suitable candidates will be close to their desired weight and have healthy lifestyles that incorporate good nutrition and exercise.

The key to a successful procedure of this kind is for you to be dedicated to maintaining the results. You don’t have to starve yourself, nor exercise more, instead you just need to be smart about what, and how much, you eat.

On top of that, it can take your body up to eight months to finalise your new figure, so be sure to keep healthy and be patient. Otherwise, your fat will reappear, albeit maybe not in the same places at first. Be conscientious and everything will settle as it should.

Here at The Private Clinic we’re always talking to experts in health and well-being to help our patients in the run up to their procedure and long after so they can make the most out of their new bodies. One way we have been doing it recently is by speaking to personal trainers in London to get their views on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments. One personal trainer in particular, Laura Marin, recently spoke to us regarding the age old issue of fat and why we all shouldn’t be too quick to judge it.

Let us know what you think of our blog series on Fat on social media. We’ll be posting regular additions to the series over the next two months.

We have put together this blog post in response to what was said in our discussions:

Excess Fat: What are my options?

Fat is often demonised. We pinch at it and loathe its build up around common wobbly areas like the tummy and underarms. Fat isn’t all bad though and can be used to help people, especially with current stem cell research. Understanding what fat is and how it works is also important for patients at The Private Clinic. We have lots of treatments and procedures that even utilise fat to enhance your body – like Fat Transfer to the Face, Fat Transfer to the Hands, Fat Transfer to the Buttocks and Fat Transfer to the Breasts. Whether you want to suck it out of you (VASER Lipo – a minimally invasive lipo procedure can help as well as MicroLipo) or transfer it to parts of the body that lose it as we age, like the hands and face, fat is often the topic of discussion at The Private Clinic as we perfect our minimally-invasive ways of getting rid of it for you or transferring it to  parts of the body to enhance volume.

Fat & Exercise – the eternal battle

We should all know you can’t really spot reduce fat through exercise. You should get active, getting your heart rate up, whilst working on different muscles groups and parts of the body to help tone and strengthen. A personal trainer is a great way to work out how you like to exercise and how your body reacts to exercise. Push too far and too hard and you could permanently damage yourself so be careful and seek professional advice if you’re unsure. Laura has helped many of her clients back from injuries and illness, back to peak fitness, and often stresses the importance of listening and reacting to how your body feels.

Another rule – don’t forget food! If you want to tone up in certain area, food is crucial. Eating and not eating certain things at various times of the day will propel your body forward and get it fighting fit much quicker than if you just focus on exercise alone.

Body Fat – how much is too much?

Fitness advice aside for a moment, humans all store a certain percentage of their body weight as fat – if you don’t you wouldn’t be alive. Fat is essential for the body to function but excess body fat is a cosmetic and health problem many wish to banish. Essential body fat is responsible for many important body functions. For men it can be about 2-5% and for women it can be about 10-13%. The average man consists of between 18-24% of fat, while the average woman has between 25-31%. Within those ranges body fat distribution will be uneven and unfortunately as you age your body fat percentage will increase, however much you exercise or diet.

Fat Transfer: The Latest Weapon in the fight against Ageing

March 12, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

A recent news story, featured in The Sunday Times last week, looked at a facial volume enhancing technique, currently being trialled in Belgium that uses stem cells in fat (adipose) tissue to selectively restore lost volume to the face, as a result of ageing. So far, it remains a trial – exactly what the stem cells are doing is unknown – if anything at all – but it is certainly an interesting trial. So while trials are the lifeblood of medicine, here at The Private Clinic our experienced team carry out fat transfer procedures utilising the latest proven techniques and technology. As a result, we wanted to share with you how we do the procedures and offer advice.

As you age, you lose fatty tissue from parts of the body that are hard to hide – most noticeably the face – and gain fat on the areas you’d like to keep it off. The skin on the face is a battleground against the elements and as you age your skin also loses elasticity, dropping downwards, exacerbating the effects of lost fat volume – evident in sagging jowls and nasolabial folds. As many struggle to shift pockets of fat in other parts of your body, science and medical know-how have stepped up and you can now have unwanted fat taken from stubborn fat deposits, around the abdomen for example, and transfer it to the ‘not-so-plump’ areas.

Fat transfer procedures typically involve taking unwanted fat from the patient’s body via liposuction (we do it here with VASER Liposuction), filtering it and transferring it to the site required by injection. This requires specific knowledge and experience to transfer effectively, without damaging the fat cells and to limit bruising. The face requires even further consideration. Here at The Private Clinic, as our very own Dr. Dennis Wolf points out, “the cannulas I use are finer than traditional fat infiltration cannulas, causing less bruising and trauma to surrounding tissue.” Make sure you ask about this, as bruising to the face is largely avoidable with an experienced doctor or surgeon.

Before and After

It is important to note that with breast enlargement via fat transfer the VASER liposuction performed will have a noticeable result on the donor area, due to the volume needed, and forms an important part of the procedure. However as less fat is required for the face, for example, the removal of fat for the ‘Organic Lift’ results in less noticeable fat loss (contouring) around the donor area, unless in combination with full VASER liposuction. The primary objective of this procedure is the added volume to the ‘problem’ area, which has been receiving very positive responses from patients.
