Should I Choose Liposuction or Fat Freezing for a Flat Stomach?

December 20, 2019 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Belly fat is a common complaint for many and despite leading an otherwise healthy lifestyle, many feel it is a tricky area to reduce fat from with diet and exercise alone. We offer a variety of procedures here to help you achieve the results you are after.

Vaser Liposuction

Vaser liposuction is performed by experienced plastic surgeons or cosmetic doctors and is ideal for patients who are close to their own weight but struggling with stubborn areas of fat. Vaser liposuction uses high frequency ultrasonic waves to break up and liquefy the areas of fat without damaging the surrounding area. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic with sedation and does require small incisions, but these do not often require stitches. Depending on the result you are after, there are a variety of different variations of liposuction including hi-def which will help to emphasize the muscles in the area providing overall body contouring.

Vaser Liposuction is available in London Harley Street, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting, also known as fat freezing, is a fat reduction treatment that uses cooling technology to freeze fat cells in the areas being targeted. Once frozen, the fat cells are then processed naturally by the body using the lymphatic system and then exposed from the body as waste. CoolSculpting is a non surgical fat reduction treatment that can be carried out in-clinic. Patients may feel slightly uncomfortable at the start of the procedure as the fat is inserted into the applicator pad and the freezing process begins but this will soon become numb allowing the patient to sit back and relax. Treatment times take as little as 35 minutes to complete and patients can start to see their results within 8-12 weeks of treatment. CoolSculpting is an ideal treatment for patients who are looking to reduce areas of stubborn fat without any downtime or restrictions on activities such as exercise and travelling.

CoolSculpting is available in Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, London Devonshire Place and Stoke Poges in Buckinghamshire

Abdominoplasty Surgery

Some patients may not be suitable for vaser liposuction or CoolSculpting. This is often because it is a larger area of fat or there may be sagging skin which will continue to get worse. In these cases you may need to seek abdominoplasty surgery which involves removing excess skin and sometimes tissue from the stomach to help achieve a smoother and flatter appearance. Tummy tuck surgery is also ideal for patients who are experiencing Diastasis Recti which can occur after pregnancy. Diastasis recti, or rectus abdominis diastasis is when the abdominal muscles separate and are unable to come back together which can cause your stomach to stick out. This is fixed surgically by repositioning and tightening the muscles which can be performed during an abdominoplasty.

There are also variations on tummy tuck surgery depending on the amount of skin being removed. These include a full tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck, extended tummy tuck and a tummy tuck combined with liposuction.

Tummy tuck surgery is available in London Harley Street, Birmingham, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Manchester, Leeds and Northampton

Which is the best method to achieve a flat stomach?

Choosing which method to remove tummy fat will take time and it is important to remember that everyone is different and what works for one person’s body may not provide you with the same results. We recommend booking a consultation with one of our expert surgeons who will be able to help guide you into choosing a treatment that is going to meet your expectations as well as suiting your lifestyle. The best method to remove belly fat will always depend on your individual requirements.

How to Remove Fat from Stubborn Areas

October 19, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Stubborn areas of fat are a common complaint with our patients here at The Private Clinic. Stubborn areas of fat can take form anywhere from the stomach to the arms and even the legs. But what actually causes these stubborn areas?

Many of us can feel we spend the majority of our time exercising and eating healthily but with no physical reward of a flatter stomach for example.

Here at The Private Clinic we offer a range of procedures to help you reduce or remove stubborn areas of fat which we will go into below;

Vaser Lipo

Vaser (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) liposuction is a specialised and minimally invasive fat removal procedure that uses the most advanced ultrasound technology which only targets fat cells leaving surrounding areas of tissue undamaged and fat cells dramatically reduced.

Areas: Thighs, Arms, Abdomen, Buttocks, Flanks, Back, Chest, Neck, Knees, Male chest reduction (gynecomastia)

Procedure: The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic but sedation is available if requested. A small probe is inserted through a small incision which is then used to transmit ultrasound energy which liquefies the fat cells before they are removed through a gentle suction process.

Results: You will see a result immediately after surgery however the final results are not seen until 5-6 weeks post procedure.

Downtime: There is minimal downtime and many patients get back to their daily routines within a couple of days depending on the areas and amount treated. You will experience bruising to some extent and some swelling, but wearing a pressure garment for 2-4 weeks after surgery will reduce this. To help speed up recovery we recommend a course of MLD massages after your treatment which can be performed in our London Harley Street, Leeds and Manchester clinics using the Body Ballancer treatment.

Surgeons:

  • Dr Dennis Wolf, BSc(Hons), MBBCh, MRCS, DO-HNS. GMC Number: 4773959
  • Mr Philip Lim, BSc(Hons), MB ChB, AFRCS(Ed), MRCS(Eng), FRCS(Plast). GMC Number: 4219068
  • Dr Leonardo Fasano, MD, Msc, GMC Number: 7533666

Micro Lipo

Micro Liposuction is a technique that uses smaller cannulas with smaller incisions allowing surgeons to target small delicate areas. MicroLipo is available exclusively at The Private Clinic, performed by one of the few surgeons in Europe offering this treatment – Mr Roberto Uccelini

Areas: Arms, Inner thighs, Knees, Flanks, Abdomen, Male Chest

Procedure:  The procedure begins with an anaesthetic fluid being injected into the area to be treated. The liquid fills and essentially swells the area making it tumescent as well as numbing it. The pressure in the now tumescent area is now increased which helps to separate the fat cells from the surrounding tissue. The fat cells are then easily and gently suctioned out using micro cannulas without damaging any of the surrounding tissue.

Results: Initial results can be seen immediately after the procedure but final results will be visible 3-4 weeks post-procedure.

Downtime: There is minimal downtime with this procedure but you will be required to wear a pressure garment which works to reduce swelling. The majority of patients are able to return to their normal routine within 48 hours.

Surgeons:

  • Mr Roberto Uccellini, MD. GMC Number: 7416337

Vaser Hi-Def

Assisted High Definition LipoSculpture, also known as Vaser Hi-Def is a pioneering body contouring treatment that aims to define and sculpt muscles resulting in a more athletic appearance.

Areas: Abdomen, Chest, Waist, Back, Buttocks, Arms, Flanks and Thighs

Procedure:  Vaser Hi-Def is performed under local anaesthetic and involves a probe being inserted via small incisions and an ultrasonic fat-specific wave breaks down the fat cells whilst leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed.  The surgeon at this point then works to remove superficial and deep fat surrounding muscle groups to improve the appearance of the underlying toning and muscle structure.

Results:  Results can include defined upper arms, an athletic six pack and even strong-looking pectorals.  The best results are seen after a couple of weeks.

Downtime:  Home rest is advised for the rest of the day after your procedure and some patients continue to take an additional 3-5 days off work. You may experience swelling for the first couple of weeks after the procedure but you should be fine to return to your usual day-to-day activities shortly after your procedure.

Surgeons:

  • Dr Dennis Wolf, BSc(Hons), MBBCh, MRCS, DO-HNS. GMC Number: 4773959
  • Dr Leonardo Fasano, MD, Msc, GMC Number: 7533666

Tummy Tuck / Brazillian Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck also known as an Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to tighten the abdomen. An Abdominoplasty is more suited for patients who have loose skin or damage to their stomach muscles often as a result of pregnancy.

Areas: Stomach and Flanks (Extended Abdominoplasty)

Procedure: A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthetic and an incision is made across the base of the abdomen from hip to hip. Your surgeon will take care to ensure that this incision sits within your natural bikini line. A second incision would also be made to remove your belly button before your stretched muscles are pulled together and any excess fat or skin is removed. Your belly button will then be placed in its new position and stitched into place along. Once the procedure is complete you will be stitched back up and you will wake up with your bandages already in place. A Brazilian tummy tuck is when liposuction is performed at the same time as the tummy tuck to help remove excess fat and contour the stomach.

Results:  The results are instant however you will experience swelling so it is best to wait for at least 2 weeks up until 6 months to see the final results.

Downtime: You will be required to stay in hospital after your procedure and you will need to wear an abdominal support garment. You will need to wear your support garment constantly for the first 2 weeks and then just during the day for the following month. The majority of patients tend to book 2-3 weeks off work to fully recover and ensure that they have someone to help at home for the first 1-2 weeks post-surgery.

Surgical Liposuction

Surgical liposuction is a surgical procedure where fat is removed from the body via a suction process. It is often combined with a tummy tuck for a full body sculpting procedure which is also known as a Brazilian tummy tuck.

Areas: Any area including; buttocks, hips, thighs, abdomen, chin, upper arms or knees

Procedure: Surgical liposuction is performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will use a tube called a cannula that is inserted via a small incision. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump which works to take out the fat from the problem areas.

Results: You will see initial results immediately after your procedure but there will be swelling so the best results are not seen until several months after surgery.

Downtime: There is more downtime associated with surgical liposuction compared to Vaser Liposuction but many patients report being able to return to work a week after the procedure with minimal discomfort. You will be required to wear a support garment and avoid exercise for at least a month.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting or Fat Freezing is a non surgical fat reduction procedure that uses controlled cooling to remove excess fat from the body.

Areas: Chin, upper arms, bra fat, flanks, tummy, thighs, back and buttocks

Procedure: The treatment areas will be marked up and you will be able to lay on treatment bed. Once comfy, a gel pad is placed over the areas being treated to protect the skin. A CoolSculpting applicator is then applied to the area which then uses a vacuum to pull the skin into the applicator. The temperature in the applicator will then drop which will cause the area to become numb. Whilst the treatment is taking place many patients choose to read a book, watch a TV series on their tablet or check their phone. Treatment times range from 35 – 60 minutes depending on the areas being treated and after this time the applicator will be removed and the area will be specially massaged to help improve your final results.

Results: The results from CoolSculpting are gradual as it can take 4-6 months for all the targeted fat cells to be eliminated from the body. Most patients start to notice visible results within 8-12 weeks. Patients may require more than one treatment to reach their desired outcome.

Downtime: There is no downtime following a CoolSculpting treatment. You may experience soreness in the area treated similar to muscle soreness after a workout but this should settle after a few days.

Post Christmas Body Contouring Procedures

January 6, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Christmas is a time of festivity with endless feasts and food on offer it has become a standard time of year for excess weight gain.  Gaining a few extra pounds is often harmless, just make sure to head back to working out and eating healthily come the New Year and you will be back to your pre-Christmas weight in no time, but for some people it’s just is not that easy.weight-gain-the-private-clinic

If isolated areas of troublesome fat are not responding to exercise or your efforts to cut back on the Christmas treats then you may be starting to look into what your next option is.

Surgical body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasties, vaser liposuction and CoolSculpting procedures are able to help many that are struggling.

Abdominoplasty

Also known as a tummy tuck, an abdominoplasty can help restore a trimmer appearance to your abdomen. Changes in weight can cause a number of problems to areas like your stomach, the abdominal muscles often become separated when skin is stretched and this is often not repaired again by any weight loss which results in excess, baggy stomach skin and damaged muscles.

During a tummy tuck, the surgeon will be able to rectify these problems by removing any excess fatty tissue and skin, repairing the damaged abdominal muscles resulting in a flatter abdominal frame.

An abdominoplasty procedure however is not suitable for those wishing to just lose weight, you will need to put the time in first to get to as close to your ideal weight as possible as any excess gain or loss after surgery could alter the look of your abdominoplasty often resulting in you needing revision surgery.

Vaser Liposuction

Vaser Liposuction, not to be confused with standard liposuction is a fat removal technique that allows you to target specific stubborn areas of fatty tissue.  It is by no means an alternative to weight loss but more a helping hand at focusing on specific areas that despite eating healthily and exercising you are struggling to lose weight from.

Visceral fat is fat that is commonly associated with weight gain and is often reduced with diet and exercise. Subcutaneous fat however is generally harmless but sticks to locations like your hips and it can be very hard to get rid of with diet and exercise alone.

Vaser Liposuction is a minimally invasive treatment which uses ultrasound energy to break down and liquefy fat cells before removing them through a suction process resulting in a body that is more defined and sculpted. Vaser Liposuction can be performed on pretty much any part of the body including Tummy, Thighs, Backs, Buttocks and even your knees.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical fat reduction procedure that is ideal for tackling areas of unwanted excess fat that diet and exercise alone have been unable to reduce. The treatment uses controlled cooling and is able to target and destroy only the fat cells being treated. Once the fat cells are frozen, they are broken down and naturally removed from the body. The treatment is suitable for the Chin/double chin, Upper arms/bingo wings, Bra Fat, Flanks/sides/hips, Abdomen/tummy, Thighs, Back and Buttocks.

The Private Clinic™ offer CoolSculpting® Fat Freezing treatments in our Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, London & Bucks Clinics.

Introducing Elipse: The Weight Loss ‘Game-Changer’

February 5, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

The Private Clinic unfortunately no longer offers the Elipse Gastric Balloon for Weight Loss. If you are looking for a weight loss treatment please see our fat reduction treatment page here

Elipse is a gastric balloon, created by Allurion,  that requires no surgery of any kind and that you pass naturally after a specific amount of time. It’s a pretty exciting tool – if we do say so ourselves.

elipse_allurion_gastric_balloon_weight_loss_the_private_clinic

What is the Elipse Gastric Balloon?

The revolutionary Elipse gastric balloon intends to promote gradual Weight Loss in overweight and obese people who have found it difficult to control their weight but would rather avoid invasive surgery.

Elipse process infographic

The procedureless gastric balloon offers a simple, safe and effective alternative to traditional weight loss aids. Elipse™ is made of thin, flexible polymer film and is delivered in a swallowable capsule, eliminating the need for surgery, endoscopy or anesthesia.

Elipse_gastric_balloon_the_private_clinic
From left to right: the inflated Elipse balloo, Elipse in its capsule form, Elipse in both its forms with a coin for size.

The balloon remains in the stomach for four months (16 weeks), after which it automatically deflates and is excreted naturally. Elipse™ is provided by a UK leading Consultant Bariatric Surgeon and is part of a comprehensive weight loss program – bringing the total length of the treatment to six months.

Living with Elipse

Keep in mind that Elipse isn’t a ‘magic pill’. The balloon is a weight loss tool combined a nutrition and monitoring program to help you lose weight, so your compliance to these and some willpower will be required for the treatment to be effective. The gastric balloon will help you feel full and cut your food intake, but for long-term results, it’s essential to establish a healthy and sustainable regime.

Who is suitable?

The Elipse Weight Loss programme targets those with a BMI between 27 and 35. On average, this aid has helped individuals lose between 10-20kg but as mentioned before, a willingness to comply with the programme is required. Some medical conditions may make you ineligible for the treatment but your doctor will tell you if this is the case.

Elipse is most suitable for obese and overweight people who want to take action and propel their Weight Loss journey in a manner that previous attempts failed to. We will be with you all the way, offering guidance and support throughout your treatment to help you stabilise your weight and equip you with a maintenance that will help you keep the weight off.

Fat Removal: Diets, Personal Trainers and Leptin – the ‘obesity hormone’

June 26, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

We recently spoke to Laura Marin, celebrity personal trainer, about the role of diet and the hormone, leptin or ‘starvation hormone’, in fat removal. While VASER Lipo and MicroLipo help, lots of us need more guidance. As a group of medical cosmetic clinics, you are our first priority at The Private Clinic and we would like to see all our patients healthy, especially in order to maintain their results.  So as part of our web series – War on Fat – we wanted to talk about diet and leptin in tackling body fat.

In a nutshell – our bad diets damage our ability to process how much we should eat and our hunger response, leading to leptin-resistance – an inability to feel full properly. The good news – you can manage your body back to feeling full easily with a good strategic diet, says Laura Marin.

Diet

There are a whole host of benefits of a good, healthy diet if you are overweight. Not only will it help you lose weight but it can also help manage your insulin levels, which seem to help your leptin levels – making that healthy meal feel truly satisfying. Of course, it may take time but you can definitely manage your cravings better with a strategic diet, according to personal trainer Laura Marin.

Leptin – the ‘obesity hormone’ or the ‘starvation hormone’

There is more and more evidence to suggest obese people are at a physiological disadvantage – they literally are hungry all the time because of leptin levels, more specifically they may be leptin-resistant. It’s often called the ‘obesity hormone’ but more people are calling it the ‘starvation hormone’. Leptin is a protein that’s made in fat cells. Leptin essentially tells your brain that is has enough energy stored in fat cells for the body to carry on normal energy-hungry activities.

Leptin levels when we eat should rise accordingly and let our brain know we have had enough and helps make us feel full. Leptin-resistance is being attributed to many obese people and develops out of high sugar diets – which have a host of ill-effects – and expose our bodies to high levels of leptin leading to resistance. So in effect we need more and more food to get the feeling of fullness leptin is responsible for.

More research points out that the problem is we seem to have a leptin level floor but no leptin level ceiling, meaning as some people gain weight it may be hard to feel satisfied and full without eating more. In leptin-resistant people the body may be obese but the brain is starved. High leptin levels are supposed to indicate to the body that it doesn’t need to eat anymore; in leptin-resistant people this doesn’t work.

The War on Fat: We talk to Celebrity Personal Trainer, Laura Marin, about Fat Loss and Fat Removal

June 6, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Here at The Private Clinic we’re always talking to experts in health and well-being to help our patients in the run up to their procedure and long after so they can make the most out of their new bodies. One way we have been doing it recently is by speaking to personal trainers in London to get their views on surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments. One personal trainer in particular, Laura Marin, recently spoke to us regarding the age old issue of fat and why we all shouldn’t be too quick to judge it.

Let us know what you think of our blog series on Fat on social media. We’ll be posting regular additions to the series over the next two months.

We have put together this blog post in response to what was said in our discussions:

Excess Fat: What are my options?

Fat is often demonised. We pinch at it and loathe its build up around common wobbly areas like the tummy and underarms. Fat isn’t all bad though and can be used to help people, especially with current stem cell research. Understanding what fat is and how it works is also important for patients at The Private Clinic. We have lots of treatments and procedures that even utilise fat to enhance your body – like Fat Transfer to the Face, Fat Transfer to the Hands, Fat Transfer to the Buttocks and Fat Transfer to the Breasts. Whether you want to suck it out of you (VASER Lipo – a minimally invasive lipo procedure can help as well as MicroLipo) or transfer it to parts of the body that lose it as we age, like the hands and face, fat is often the topic of discussion at The Private Clinic as we perfect our minimally-invasive ways of getting rid of it for you or transferring it to  parts of the body to enhance volume.

Fat & Exercise – the eternal battle

We should all know you can’t really spot reduce fat through exercise. You should get active, getting your heart rate up, whilst working on different muscles groups and parts of the body to help tone and strengthen. A personal trainer is a great way to work out how you like to exercise and how your body reacts to exercise. Push too far and too hard and you could permanently damage yourself so be careful and seek professional advice if you’re unsure. Laura has helped many of her clients back from injuries and illness, back to peak fitness, and often stresses the importance of listening and reacting to how your body feels.

Another rule – don’t forget food! If you want to tone up in certain area, food is crucial. Eating and not eating certain things at various times of the day will propel your body forward and get it fighting fit much quicker than if you just focus on exercise alone.

Body Fat – how much is too much?

Fitness advice aside for a moment, humans all store a certain percentage of their body weight as fat – if you don’t you wouldn’t be alive. Fat is essential for the body to function but excess body fat is a cosmetic and health problem many wish to banish. Essential body fat is responsible for many important body functions. For men it can be about 2-5% and for women it can be about 10-13%. The average man consists of between 18-24% of fat, while the average woman has between 25-31%. Within those ranges body fat distribution will be uneven and unfortunately as you age your body fat percentage will increase, however much you exercise or diet.
