The latest diet plan…swallow a balloon

May 7, 2016 by

Mail Online

Novel device is filled with water in your stomach and reduces your desire to eat.

  •     New diet technique is a balloon placed in the stomach and filled with water
  •     Device is being marketed as a less invasive alternative to a gastric band
  •     American invention coming to UK in £4,000 weight reduction programme

It has been hailed as the latest magic bullet for slimmers – a balloon that is placed in the stomach and then filled with water.

The idea is that it makes the patient feel full and so reduces their desire to eat. Those who have tried the product say it has drastically cut their eating – and their waistlines.

And now the American invention is coming to the UK as part of a £4,000, six-month weight reduction programme.

A handful of British patients have already been fitted with the device, which is being marketed as a less invasive – and temporary – alternative to a gastric band.

But experts have warned the balloon could cause a potentially fatal blockage.

The Gastric Balloon is swallowed while enclosed in a capsule attached to a hollow plastic tube.

A doctor uses ultrasound to check the balloon is correctly positioned, and it is filled, via the tube, with almost a pint of water. Finally, the tube is detached and removed.

After 16 weeks, a valve sealing the device dissolves and the balloon deflates. It then passes through the intestines and out of the body.

The novel device is likely to appeal to those who are only modestly overweight, as it is being marketed at those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 or more – only two points over the ‘healthy weight’ threshold.

Monica Nava, 42, from Surrey, is one of the first Britons to have the device fitted. She has already shed more than a stone.

She said: ‘It took me a few tries to swallow the capsule with a glass of water. After it’s been filled you feel strangely heavy and full. But within a week, I’d stopped noticing it.’

Its not without its critics. Paul Super, senior upper gastrointestinal surgeon at Birmingham Heartlands & Solihull NHS Trust, warned: ‘If you made enough people swallow one, eventually you’d start to see people with the bag causing obstructions in the intestine, which requires major surgery to sort out.’

But Dr Samuel Levy, co-founder of US-based manufacturers Allurion, said: ‘We have treated hundreds of patients in Italy, France and the UK since December.

‘None have had any problems. We are confident of its safety.’

MicroLipo & Breast Fat Transfer – Mother of two, 39

MicroLipo & Breast Fat Transfer – Fat from inner thighs transferred to breasts

“I absolutely love my legs. I never thought they could look this good. The breasts, to me, have improved 100% (I was not after large volume but better shape and fuller nipples after breastfeeding 2 kids).”

I never thought I would do it – I am a wimp and a worrier – but I now wonder why I waited so long. So many summers worried about wearing a bikini, trousers too tight on the legs but loose at the waist….I don’t think I ever wore a miniskirt or shorts even when I was a teenager.

Dr Gupta has achieved amazing results. The nurses and the staff at The Private Clinic were kind and caring.

Overall it took 4 hours as fat was taken from my inner thighs, then injected into my breasts. I was awake but felt nothing, not even discomfort. They tell me that most patients doze off.  The breasts at first looked huge and I was worried, but Dr Gupta reassured me that there is quite a bit of swelling, the anaesthetic solution, and also that he overfills them, because a % gets reabsorbed.  My breasts were always small, but after breastfeeding they were empty and the nipples a bit saggy – you can see a crease/fold in the before photos which has been filled up. That’s all I wanted….but I think I got some extra volume too which is great!

My husband picked me up and I went straight to bed (my surgery was late afternoon). The recovery wasn’t a walk in the park. For at least two weeks I was very uncomfortable, although I rarely took any pain killer as I was worried I would overdo it and then suffer more. However I have two very young kids and I did everything including going to the park, lifting them, carrying them etc.

Bending was the worse as the knees were the sorest part. Also the swelling at times got a bit spooky. Around day 11-12, I called the clinic as I thought my legs were swelling up too much. They got Dr Gupta to call me back to reassure me all was normal. He thinks the inner thighs are possibly the worse area in terms of pain and recovery. Anyway at no point I wish I had not done it, so I guess it was bearable.

The surgery was on Friday I went to work on Monday, but I have an office job. If I had a more physical job, I think I would have struggled. The garments can be easily hidden under normal clothes.

I am now passed the 5 months mark and I am over the moon.

I think my photos are shocking! I never liked my legs but the photos prove me right!  I think they were completely out of proportion with the rest of my body. I am very small elsewhere (and short) and unfortunately if I lost weight it went from my breast, my belly, and my face….never from my legs.

I wrote this review because while I was recovering I read forums and reviews online almost daily. Trying to find out if the swelling was common, checking out photos, comparing experiences.

I hope this feedback is helpful to other people.

MicroLipo & Buttock Fat Transfer – Kasia, 29

September 26, 2016 by

Fat Transfer to the Buttocks

“It’s changed my life in so many ways, i’m like a different person. It just keeps getting better and i only wish i’d done it sooner”

Watch a video of Kasia’s procedure >

For as long as she can remember, Kasia was unhappy with her figure for one reason or another. By her own admission she was a fat kid. Then, during her late teens, she lost weight dramatically and started hitting the gym. Hard. It wasn’t unusual for her to be there five or six times a week.

Her prime motivation was that she felt that she had no shape – she’d always wanted a curvier figure. But trying to change body shape through exercise alone is perhaps one of the hardest things to do. Undeterred, Kasia dedicated herself to the task. Occasionally she would fall out of her routine and would put on weight around her waist, making her appear even more unshapely, in her eyes at least. She could never seem to find a happy medium.

At 5’10” she is tall and has slim legs. After losing her puppy fat she felt she was a bit top-heavy. She tried for a long time to build her buttocks and thighs while toning the top half, flattening her belly and defining her waist. She found her body responded well to gym work but if she ever stopped for a while she began to lose the results.

She found it most frustrating while shopping for clothes. Often she would see something that looked great on the hanger or on other people, only to find that when she tried it on it just emphasised all the wrong parts of her body. She adapted her style of dress to her body shape, always sticking to high-waisted clothing to avoid the annoying ‘muffin top’ that affects many women. Holidays in bikinis were just about bearable, but not ideal.

“This could potentially make a huge difference to my life.”

Kasia couldn’t remember where she first heard about micro-canular lipo and fat transfer but had often considered it when looking at herself in the mirror. Aged 29 with some savings put by, she finally decided enough was enough. She talked it through with her boyfriend, who wasn’t too keen at first. He said he loved her just the way she was. Well trained, thought Kasia.

Like most patients of The Private Clinic, she wasn’t going to take this decision lightly. She made arranged a consultation with Cosmetic Physician, Dr Puneet Gupta, who has an unrivalled reputation for his work with this procedure. His calm professionalism and dedication to achieving natural looking results really struck a chord with her.

During her initial consultation Dr Gupta questioned Kasia about her medical history and her aspirations in order to satisfy himself that her expectations were realistic. It took Kasia a couple of weeks to decide and once the one month contemplation period insisted on by The Private Clinic had passed, she travelled to the Knightsbridge clinic in London for her four hour procedure.

The time seemed to fly by and before she knew it, Kasia was walking out of the door to begin her recovery. She couldn’t believe she hadn’t even felt any pain. Within two days she was back at work and after the full 8 week recovery period she was back in the gym.

And is she happy with the results? Kasia can answer that one… Watch a video of Kasia’s procedure >

“Finally, I’ve got the figure I have been trying to achieve for years. My boyfriend loves it and my family are all really happy because they know how much this means to me.”

MicroLipo & Breast Fat Transfer – Sally, 32

Breast Fat Transfer

Watch a video of Sally’s procedure >

“To be able to remove fat from your stomach and make the breasts fuller at the same time – it’s just genius!”

Sally’s first consultation was in April last year. The story she told will strike a chord with many people. For as long as she can remember, even as far back as her school days, she had been unhappy with her figure. She had been a regular at the gym since she was seventeen, often three to four times per week. She occasionally had a few months off here and there but was soon back on the treadmill again in an effort to change, or at least maintain, her figure.

She had always thought her body was out of proportion. For years she had been yo-yoing between exercising, during which she loved her slim stomach but was unhappy with her breasts, then putting weight back on and being happy with her breasts but absolutely hating her stomach. Unfortunately for Sally, there seemed to be no in between.

She often felt uncomfortable simply wearing clothes and would dread wearing a bikini on holiday. She didn’t feel particularly self-conscious standing up but sitting down was the real problem. She could feel a roll at the top of her stomach just beneath her bra and another hanging over her jeans.

One evening while Sally absentmindedly watched the news, she noticed a feature about micro-canular fat transfers. She was gripped. She discussed it with her boyfriend, who wasn’t too keen at first but soon gave in when he could see how much it meant to her.

“As soon as I found out this procedure was real, I just thought – yes!”

Sally began feverishly researching Micro Lipo, reading page after page of information. She eventually decided to book an appointment with Cosmetic Physician, Dr Puneet Gupta, who has a fantastic reputation for his work with this procedure. His philosophy – that it’s not about what to remove but what to leave behind in order to achieve natural results – really resonated with Sally.

In what seemed like no time at all she was sitting with Dr Gupta for her initial consultation. They discussed her history and her aspirations in order for the doctor to satisfy himself that her expectations were realistic. Sally could barely wait during the one month contemplation period insisted on by The Private Clinic.

She was naturally a little nervous when she returned to the clinic but was soon put at ease by the calm professionalism of the staff. Her three and a half hour Micro Lipo procedure seemed to fly by and before she knew it she was walking out of the door to begin her recovery. Sally later admitted that she had thought it was going to hurt but in the end she hadn’t felt any pain at all.

After three to four weeks, everything started to settle down but even during that time it wasn’t so uncomfortable that she couldn’t carry on life as normal. As is usual with the procedure, the results get better and better over time. After the full 8 week recovery period she resumed her gym routine and was cycling to work and back, some sixteen miles a day. Of course, we should let Sally have the final word… Watch a video of Sally’s procedure >

“TPC and the process has been second to none. The initial consultation, the nurses, everything – it’s been amazing. I’m so happy with my new figure now. Yeah, I’m feeling good!”

Augmenting the Buttocks

May 1, 2015 by

Aesthetics Magazine

Bigger, smaller, tighter, tauter – aesthetic practitioners are continually challenged with an increasingly wide range of requests for augmenting the buttocks, and improving the appearance of the surrounding area. Body contouring procedures that target stubborn-to-shift areas on the abdomen, flanks, buttocks and thighs are in increasing demand, as well as remedies for what patients often regard as ‘unsightly’ cellulite. In recent years, enquiries into treatment options have soared and, at the end of 2014, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) recorded an 86% increase in buttock augmentation treatments performed in the US since 2013. The president of ASAPS, Dr Michael Edwards, suggests that the technological advancements and improvements in efficacy of non-surgical fat reduction devices are encouraging people to undergo treatment. “The rise in its popularity is indicative of the public’s desire for non-surgical alternatives in lieu of their invasive counterparts,” he says, adding, “It’s not surprising that more people are opting to freeze or melt away stubborn body fat in the comfort of their surgeon’s office, as opposed to undergoing surgery.”

In the UK, it’s no different. Both aesthetic practitioners and plastic surgeons have reported a rise in patient requests for treatments in this area and, while reducing the size of the buttocks has been popular for some time, some doctors have noted an increase in enquiries for buttock enhancements. In June last year, private healthcare search engine WhatClinic.com reported a 115% rise in enquiries for the ‘Brazilian butt lift’ since the previous year, and cites the infamous Kim Kardashian ‘belfie’ (bottom selfie) photograph as a prompt for the 136% increase in enquiries that happened within a month of the photograph being shared on social media. The website also noted that within the same month, buttock implant procedures rose by 53%.

One such method increasing in popularity is VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) Liposuction. The Private Clinic of Harley Street claims that its staff members perform more than 1,000 procedures a year, with The Private Clinic practitioner and trainer Dr Dennis Wolf explaining that he treats an average of nine to 12 patients each week with VASER. And while flanks are the most common area he treats, thighs amount to approximately 30-40% of the VASER procedures Dr Wolf performs per week. He says, “By treating the areas surrounding the buttocks, you’ll make it stand out more. It’ll have a little more definition thanks to VASER treatment.”

To administer VASER Liposuction, the practitioner inserts a small probe into the area requiring treatment, which is then used to transmit sound energy and liquefy fat cells prior to their removal through a suction process. Dr Wolf claims that only one treatment is needed, and it will improve the overall shape and contours of the body.

He also advocates that patients should undergo Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) following a VASER treatment. The specialised massage technique aims to help stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the flow of lymph fluid. According to Dr Wolf it, “Makes a big difference to patients’ recovery and results.”

In terms of patient demographics, Dr Wolf says that although 60% of his patients are women, male interest in VASER Lipo is definitely increasing. “In recent years, it’s become ok for men to have treatment. They have become more self-conscious of their appearance and are savvy in terms of what procedures are available,” he says.

Managing patient expectations, however, is always of utmost importance. “Make sure they’ve got realistic expectations and understand that you’re not going to make a model out of them,” advises Dr Wolf. “We’re not striving for perfection, we’re striving for improvement.” Dr Wolf says, “Weight management and cutting down on alcohol intake is important – patients need to engrain dietary changes and exercise into their daily routine.”

Of the practitioners interviewed, none reported seeing any major complications following treatment. All did emphasise, however, that while the treatments on offer are aimed at enhancing aesthetic appearance, they should not be undertaken lightly as ‘quick-fix beauty treatments’. “With any minimally-invasive procedure, there are of course the regular risks of infection, bleeding and bruising,” says Dr Wolf, adding, “It’s important to remember with these types of treatments that there can be irregularities, pigmentation changes or a risk of lumpiness. Patients should be made aware that if they don’t want to accept those risks they shouldn’t have treatment.” *

The ultimate Oscars makeover: Our writer discovers what it really takes to get red carpet ready as she undergoes wrinkle relaxants, laser facials and a nose job

The Daily Mail

How to get your body Red Carpet ready

If your skin is looking amazing and your facial contours are on point, you could opt for invasive procedures such as MicroLipo or a fat transfer to perfect your curves and get a camera-ready silhouette.

They can both target stubborn pockets of fat on the hips, thighs, arms and midsection, but a fat transfer can – you guessed it – transfer the fat to an area that is lacking. For example a dip between flanks and hips, the breasts or bottom.

Dr Puneet Gupta of The Private Clinic on Harley Street performs these surgeries in London.

A spokesperson for The Private Clinic says: ‘Microlipo allows women to wear a beautiful cut-out gown, like a lot of the dresses we saw at the Golden Globes.’ *
