How 2015 was “the” year for Cosmetic Surgery in the UK

February 8, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Every year the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) releases a statistical overview of the top Cosmetic Surgery trends and the numbers are finally in for 2015. Let’s see how the industry has evolved since 2014 and what we can take from it for the year ahead.

With over 51,000 Britons opting for cosmetic surgery in 2015, it’s definitely been a record year for the industry. Overall, there was a 12.6% rise in invasive cosmetic procedures (with increased demand for ALL procedures) – a far cry from the 9% dip observed in 2014. That fall is being considered as a reflection of the British economy and the scare behind botched procedures and PIP breast implants, while last year’s rise is associated with a more educated public who have come to realise the superior long-term effects of surgical treatments versus less invasive ones. Moreover, former BAAPS President and collator of the audit data, Rajiv Grover, believes that an increased openness from celebrities about the work they’ve had done has also contributed to lessened reservations about nip and tucks.

plastic-surgery

For instance, although women still account for 91% of cosmetic procedures in the UK, the number of men opting for Cosmetic Surgery has almost doubled in the past decade – having gone from 2,440 treatments in 2005, to 4,614 in 2015. Notably, Male Breast Reductions rose by 13%, whereas male facial procedures were up by an average of 14-15.5%, which Mr Grover theorises is due to a change in mens’ fashion styles. Particularly, Mr Grover has said that a move from the ‘hyper-masculine’ look of 2014, to a more slimline and sharp appearance, has played an important role in making men consider their cosmetic options.

The order of popularity for treatments for both genders hasn’t changed since 2014, but both saw an impressive 20% growth in Liposuction numbers. Women on the other hand still favour Breast Augmentation the most, but a 16% rise in Face and Neck Lifts, threatens to overcome second-placed Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) soon.

Please find the full BAAPS statistics below:

It’s important to note that although the number of cosmetic surgery procedures is soaring, such procedures are still very serious matters and should not be take up lightly. Current BAAPS President, Michael Cadier, expressed concern about plastic surgery becoming a ‘commodity’, saying that “the public must always be warned that an operation is not something that can simply be returned to the shop if you don’t like it”. We echo his concern and encourage our patients to only chose plastic surgery if you believe that it will benefit you and because you’re doing it for yourself – not because of a trend.

Medical uses for cosmetic treatments

December 17, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Most people today are pretty clued up on what different cosmetic procedures can achieve aesthetically, but did you know some of the most well known procedures are actually used for other medical purposes too? We explain a few of the most well-known treatments and their purposes beyond simply helping us to look good.

Liposuction

Well known for its use on frustrating body fat, liposuction actually has some very important medical purposes too. Lymphoedema is a little known chronic condition which causes random parts of the body to retain fluid and swell after damage to the lymphatic system (a complex body component whereby excess fluid and waste products are transported around the body). A specialist form of liposuction MicroLipo is used as part of control of the condition alongside MLD massage and compression garments. Although the condition can never be cured as such it can make a huge difference, with results from MicroLipo lasting up to 15 years in many cases. Similar to Lymphoedema in its appearance, Lipoedema is another chronic condition in which the body stores excess fat in symmetrical areas around the body (usually the legs). MicroLipo is also used in this circumstance to control the condition and rid of the disproportionate fat cells.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is arguably one of the better known cosmetic surgeries. It has helped thousands of people feel more confident about the shape or size of their nose, but did you know it can also be used to help snoring?

A deviated septum (an uneven cartilage partition between the right and left nostrils) in the nose can cause everything from  headaches to nosebleeds. One of its most common side effects is loud nasal sounds during the night (or, in less polite terms, snoring).  To correct the area, a minor form of rhinoplasty called a septo-rhinoplasty is performed, which helps correct the problem and ease any snoring.

Botox

The world’s best known wrinkle injection has a surprising amount of uses that go far beyond its cosmetic appeal. Botox, which celebrated its 25th birthday this year, works by blocking signals released by nerve cells from reaching muscles, which essentially leaves the muscles without an instruction  to contract. This is how it stops wrinkles around the face, but the same very principle has led it to become a proven medical treatment for many conditions from migraines to urinary incontinence, and muscle spasms to nerve problems. At The Private Clinic, one of the most popular medical conditions we use Botox for is hyperhyrosis – otherwise known as excessive sweating. The botilinum toxin blocks the nerve action of  problem sweat glands which means less sweat is produced in the area, with results lasting on average 6-12 months before a top up is needed.

excessive-sweating-why-do-we-sweat

Just because a treatment falls under the cosmetic category doesn’t mean it’s purely aesthetic. Many of our patients opt for treatments for different reasons – from medical, to helping them rediscover lost confidence. With over 30 years of medical experience behind us we understand the personal reasons behind every treatment, and make sure we always give you an experience that’s unique to you. The driving force behind every treatment we provide is your satisfaction – whatever that might mean to you.

We have clinics in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, London City, London Harley Street and Manchester, with consultation rooms across the country and a specialist vein clinic in Weybridge.

VASER Liposuction: A Work Of Art

February 6, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

For centuries, the beauty ideals and standards portrayed in the media have often been sought-after by individuals wanting to enhance and improve their features, in particular, the look and shape of their bodies. Body sculpting can be considered as art work, with the artist (surgeon) carving and shaping the patient’s body to create the desired silhouette. The days of wearing corsets have virtually ceased to exist, with modern advances in cosmetic surgery that have brought about changes to these conventional methods of body sculpting.

What is VASER Lipo?

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) Liposuction is essentially body contouring and fat removal through use of ultrasound technology. This minimally invasive procedure is targeted to break down fat cells which are then removed from the body through a suction method. VASER Liposuction is less invasive than the traditional Liposuction, and is suitable for both women and men. Common advantages and results of VASER Liposuction include (but are not limited to):

  • Overall improvement of body shape & contour
  • Permanent, immediate and natural-looking results. Individuals after an even more definition may like to consider the VASER Hi-Def / VASER 4D
  • Minimal downtime
  • Low risk of bleeding and discomfort
  • Firmer, tighter skin in most patients

Why VASER Lipo?

A number of men and women wish to improve and define their body shape, with the concern often being areas of the body that are too “wobbly” or seem resistant to fat loss (even with regular exercise and a healthy diet). In an ideal world, human beings could merely pick and choose where fat is stored on the body, in accordance to their wishes. Unfortunately, this simply isn’t a reality, as fat deposition is often genetically pre-determined. VASER Liposuction is one of very few procedures that can offer people some control of where and when their body fat is stored.

Where is VASER Lipo done?

We offer VASER Liposuction consultations and procedures in several of our clinics across the UK. We have fully equipped medical theatres in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds and Manchester, with around 2,000 VASER Liposuction procedures performed each year.

Consultations for VASER Liposuction treatment are available nationwide. As well as being in association with The Advanced Body Sculpting Institute, our specialist team of doctors are amongst the very top industry leader for body sculpting and contouring;

The Cosmetic Surgery Boom And The Private Clinic

May 10, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Britons are spending £2.3 billion a year on cosmetic procedures, which includes invasive and non-invasive treatments and procedures. The figure is expected to rise to £3.6 billion in two years and around 43,000 people are having cosmetic surgery each year in the UK. In light of Sir Bruce Keogh’s recent review of the Cosmetic Industry, we wanted to explore a little more the kinds of things people want and what people can have.

The A-Z of Cosmetic Treatments

You can have unwanted body fat taken out of you by a VASER Lipo or MicroLipo procedure and if you want you can even have that fat filtered and injected into the face and hands to tackle the signs of ageing or into the breasts and buttocks to enhance the size, giving patients a ‘natural’ boob job or Brazilian Butt lift.

Before & After Vaser High-Def Lipo

You can get your ears reshaped and pinned back. You can use Botox to treat more than just a wrinkle, with many medical uses such as treating excessive sweating. You can have lasers zap away scars caused by injury, surgery or acne as well as chemical peels to take away the most visible signs of ageing and damaged skin.

There are different treatments to tackle the different types of snoring. There are procedures where individual hair follicles are transplants from the back of your head to thinning or balding areas for men and women of all races. Men can get rid of the man boobs, or moobs, and women can reduce, lift or increase the size of their breasts.

There are so many possible treatments out there. With so much choice on offer, make sure you do your research and find a good clinic in order to be as safe as possible for the best results.

Why is there a boom in the Cosmetic Industry?

It has been revealed that 1 in every 50 Britons has had cosmetic surgery. Its popularity looks set to continue. Reduced stigma, downtime, scarring and increasing pressure to look even better for our ages have all been cited as possible reasons why cosmetic surgery has been on the rise despite the economic gloom. The UK is home to some of the best doctors, surgeons and clinics in the world, which attract many foreigners to our shores.

We don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to look good for your age but in the wrong hands and in the wrong frame of mind a decision can cost you a lot more than a lot of money  – with complications and dissatisfaction with results.

Here at The Private Clinic we think it’s very important to give the patient time to reflect and think things through before going ahead with a procedure. We want our patients to be going ahead for the right kinds of reasons, in full knowledge of the potential positives and negatives of a procedure.

The Private Clinic

If you take our Fat Transfer procedures for example, a ‘natural’ boob job can last as long as breast implants and eliminate many of the concerns women have about implants. There is plenty to cheer about when it comes to Cosmetic procedures. At its core, the industry in the UK is a hotbed of technological advances and innovations, helping to drive the world of medicine forward. Bad practitioners exist in all industries and it is with concerted effort that we support greater regulation to protect patients, particularly in response to Sir Bruce Keogh’s Cosmetic Industry review.

Please feel free to continue looking through our blog for lots more information and discussions about the industry, trends and procedures.
