Against all odds: Cosmetic Surgery boost in figures

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have released the figures for the number of cosmetic procedures in the UK, and despite the recent PIP scandal in 2012, figures have shown an impressive 17% overall increase on average (a significant increase that has not been seen since before the 2008 recession), with over 50,000 cosmetic procedures carried out in 2013. Women accounted for 90.5% of all cosmetic procedures in the UK with the top ten procedures being:

  • Liposuction: 43% increase, with 3,772 procedures performed (largest increase of all cosmetic procedures)
  • Breast Augmentation: 13% increase, with 11,123 procedures performed (the most popular cosmetic surgery for women in 2013)
  • Blepharoplasty: 14% increase, 6,921 procedures performed
  • Face/Neck Lift: 13% increase, 6,016 procedures performed
  • Breast Reduction: 11% increase, 4,680 procedures performed
  • Rhinoplasty: 19% increase, 3,841 procedures performed
  • Abdominoplasty: 16% increase, 3,343 procedures performed
  • Fat Transfer: 15% increase, 3,037 procedures performed
  • Brow Lifts: 18%, 1,962 procedures performed
  • Otoplasty: 19% increase, 670 procedures performed

Men in the UK weren’t strangers to cosmetic surgery either, accounting for 9.5% of all cosmetic procedures in the UK. The top ten cosmetic procedures for men in 2013 are as follows:

  • Rhinoplasty: 9% increase, with 1,037 procedures performed (the most popular cosmetic surgery for men in 2013)
  • Blepharoplasty: 17% increase, 887 procedures performed
  • Breast Reduction: 24% increase, 769 procedures performed
  • Liposuction: 28% increase, 554 procedures performed
  • Otoplasty: 8% increase, 543 procedures performed
  • Face/Neck Lift: 19% increase, 364 procedures performed
  • Fat Transfer: 10% increase, 265 procedures performed
  • Brow Lifts: 18% increase, 176 procedures performed
  • Abdominoplasty: 15% increase, 123 procedures performed
  • Breast Augmentation: stagnant figures from 2012, with 9 procedures performed
