What Lies Beneath

October 12, 2016 by

Asian Bride Mag

Nina Ubhi delves into the world of non-invasive cosmetic treatments, which increasingly seem to be a popular choice for the modern Asian woman.

I turn on the TV and even the stars of (apparent) reality shows seem to have perfect faces with not a fine line or blemish in sight, all intact in perfect symmetry and perfectly shaped lips… basically perfect. More and more women are opting for cosmetic surgery ahead of their wedding day, with a definite increase in women opting for non-surgical treatments such as Botox and Juverderm.

Anyone who’s been a fan of ‘The Hills’ knows the sad but inevitable story of Heidi Montag, who underwent ten cosmetic surgery procedures in one day.

The question is, who was she aiming to please – herself or her new husband and is she now content with her new look?  Only time will tell. Every woman wants to look their best on their big day and more brides are turning to non-invasive treatments for themselves and their bridal party. Not only is the modern bride opting for such treatments as Dermarollers, Botox and Juverderm but they’re also on a quest to have the perfect bridal party.

In a bid to achieve a near ideal body image for their future husband, there are numerous quick turn-around treatments now available to achieve near perfection for almost any party of the body. Non-invasive treatments like Velashape can literally take inches off your waist, buttocks and thighs, and most importantly with no surgery or downtime. The treatment consists of heat, massage and suction to more or less shrink the fat cells providing a minimised circumference of the treated area.

I get numerous brides who tell me they don’t want to wear the traditional red lipstick on ther big day as it makes their lips look smaller, and even more so when your lips are not naturally as plump as you would like them to be. I personally am in favour of certain non-invasive treatments and feel it can enhance your natural beauty and appearance, and even spark non-existent confidence in some individuals.

But as with any cosmetic procedure, there are often many misconceptions and myths, and the general public often has many questions regarding the various cosmetic options on the market. I’m pretty sure you’ve all seen the odd advert for Juverderm but never really knew what it was or what it did? Well Juvederm is a dermal filler and one of the most popular around.

Dr Puneet Gupta, Aesthetic Physician at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, an expert in treating Asian skin says: “Materials injected into lips for enhancement are called dermal fillers. These are primarily composed of Hyaluronic Acid which is found in abundance in the skin naturally and is chemically identical to everyone, meaning there is a very low risk of allergic reactin. For that reason any Hyaluronic Acid filler is the safest to inject”.

You hear stories all the time about how fillers or Botox treatments went wrong, but most of the time this is due to lack of research done by the patient when deciding which physician to go with.  It is imperative that you do as much research as possible before opting for any kind of treatment. Many women also opt for ‘lunch time fixes’ now – a quick jab to smoth a forehead frown or a couple of jabs to plump up your lips. And not everyone goes for the artificial look either.

You’d be surprised as to how many women have facial enhancements done and you would never know. Dr Gupta says: “People these days are very aware of most of the treatments and normally very realistic about the results and their expectations. In fact, most people tend to opt for a more natural rather than artificial look.”

But if you were to have, let’s say your lips done, would you want people to visibly notice that you’ve had them done? It seems many brides prefer to just ‘perfect’many of their features for their big day and future life with their husband, whereas the everyday Asian woman who opts for non-invasive treatments is purely setting out to look younger and more vibrant.

“There has most certainly been an increase in the number of women coming for aesthetic enhancements, including Asian women. Although one of the things I always make clear to patients is that there is no such thing as permanent enhancement. Ageing is a continuous process and we cannot turn back time.

Hence why every treatment will only be effective for a limited period of time”, states Dr Gupta.

If you are looking to have some form of age reversing procedure done, but don’t want to spend a fortune doing it, then there are numerous products on the market which are cheaper and set out to achieve the same effect as fillers but they just take longer to gain the results.

It’s no longer just about getting the dress right, flowers right and the venue right – it’s all about how to look good naked. This not only means with your clothes off, but with your make-up off too.  I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with getting a few tucks here and there or a life or two, but I fully believe a lot of research is needed before taking the plunge.

All you need to know about lip fillers

March 30, 2018 by Steffanie Griffiths Leave a Comment

If you’re thinking about lip fillers, but want to get more clued-up on the procedure and what your options are, this blog post lays out all you need to know at this stage…

What are lip fillers?

A type of dermal filler, lip fillers provide a volume enhancing solution, for those unhappy with the size or shape of their lips. The popular procedure is non-invasive, and enhances lips without comprising how they feel for you or others.

Today’s sophisticated fillers use Hyaluronic Acid, a substance naturally found in the body, which helps the skin retain its softness and moisture, while increasing volume. Collagen fillers, previously the most common dermal filler, are now less frequently used.

There are a few reputable dermal filler brands available, however, The Private Clinic favour the dermal filler brand, Juvéderm which is constructed of hyaluronic acid containing a local anaesthetic which numbs the lips and reduces discomfort during treatment.

Who can have a lip filler injection?

Adults of any age can use lip filler to enhance their lips. With different formulations targeting different concerns, lip fillers can address a range of needs. Some address fine lines around the mouth, whereas others focus on increasing volume to the lips, for example.

Talented aesthetic medical professionals can help achieve natural-looking results appropriate for adults at all ages complimenting both your lips and facial shape.

What are my lip filler options?

Your practitioner can address either or both the main body of your lips and vermillion border (the border of the upper and lower lips that is pinkish-to-red in colour). Whether you want to treat both lips, the bottom lip, the centre of the top lip or the lip border, you can address whichever region you and your aesthetic practitioner decide is most complementary to your profile.

For defining the lip border, adding volume or evening out the lips, different types of dermal filler are available. At The Private Clinic, we offer Juvéderm Smile, Juvéderm Volift and Juvéderm Volbella for lip filler treatments. Juvéderm Smile adds fullness and body to both the upper and lower lips, meanwhile enhancing its overall shape and contour. Juvéderm Volift provides the lips with natural-looking and long lasting volume. Juvéderm Volbella helps define the lip line, and can treat lines around the mouth. In regards to the amount of lip filler used, this will depend on the patients desired results. However, at The Private Clinic, we usually advise injecting up to 1ml at a time, and more volume can be added over a couple of treatments.

The golden ratio for lip fillers is usually 1:1.818 top to bottom – any ratio outside of this can achieve an unnatural looking result. Although, it is not a blueprint for all, some patients suit more symmetrical lips, or a ‘top-heavy’ look. Your practitioner will advise what is best for you.

What does the treatment involve?

Before treatment, your aesthetic practitioner will first clean your lips, and can also apply topical anaesthetic to the area in addition to the anaesthetic already included in most dermal fillers. Your medical practitioner will then prepare the syringes with the predetermined amount, and inject small amount of dermal filler directly into the skin, through an ultrafine needle.

You may experience minimal pain but the anaesthetic in the dermal filler should make the treatment virtually pain free, and provide comfort during and after the injection.

Are lip fillers safe?

For safety and confidence in your results, it is very important to only use a qualified medical practitioner for treatment. You may find that spas or beauty salons offer lip filler procedures, however, only qualified nurses and doctors can achieve the most effective results and are able to treat you or prescribe medication if there is any complication.

Do augmented lips feel different to natural lips?

When carried out correctly, by a qualified medical practitioner, lips treated with lip fillers should not be able to feel any different to natural lips.

How much do lip fillers cost?

Lip filler injections can cost anything between £250 and £500 per ml, depending on the amount and type of dermal filler used.

At The Private Clinic, our lip filler prices start at £250, and you can save money when buying a course of dermal filler with us. An exact cost quote will be provided after a consultation in which your lip filler requirements are determined.

How do long do the results lasts?

Both temporary and permanent lip fillers are available. However, at The Private Clinic, we only use the highest quality temporary fillers, which in our opinion are safer with more stable results. Permanent fillers are becoming less popular, as their complications are much more difficult to treat, and excision could be the only possible remedy.

The effects of temporary lip fillers will fade gradually, but are likely to last between 4 and 6-8 months, subject to the type of treatment used and the individual variability. After this point, you are able to have a top up treatment, or if you choose to have no further injections, the gel will then biodegrade in your skin and disappear.

What are the side effects of lip filler & aftercare required?

Immediately after treatment, you might experience some temporary swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness around the treated area, and may also feel a slight itching sensation.

Regarding necessary aftercare, you should avoid anything which could increase swelling. At The Private Clinic, we recommend being gentle with the area, and that you refrain from touching the region as much as possible immediately after treatment. We also advise you to avoid lipstick or lip balm and extremes of temperature for 12 hours. It is also advisable not to schedule treatment within 2 weeks of any special event to allow sufficient time for any bruising or swelling to resolve.

Opting for a more natural look to anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers

May 31, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

A natural face is now making a come-back in the world of celebrities, gone are the oversized lips and frozen foreheads and instead stars are embracing their natural lines and wrinkles. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are avoiding the anti-wrinkle injections and fillers, we suspect it is more down to the technique it is given.

Katie Price is a good example of this, once known for her big bust and big lips she is now opting for a more toned down look. Katie stated last year: “That’s it now. I won’t do any more to my body. I’ll still have Botox.”

Speaking to our clinical lead Mel Recchia it has already been noted that there is a steady rise in patients wanting a much more natural result from treatment;

“We now, much more than ever before, look at the face as a whole, we don’t just “chase the line” we don’t just treat the problem, we look at the cause of the problem, i.e. – loss of volume in the mid face and cheek area results in a deepening naso-labial fold, nose to mouth line; so we look at putting volume back into the cheek not just fill the naso-labial fold. This approach overall gives a much more natural appearance to the face.”

At The Private Clinic we only offer tried and tested, fully approved medical products, produced by worldwide, renowned manufacturers, such as Allergan.

Allergan have done many studies on who has injectable treatments and why they have them, their current research has identified 3 different groups of people having treatment.

The Positive Ageing Group

These are women who want to be in control, age well but stay looking natural. They want to look how they feel without changing the way that they look. It is not their aim to look 20 years younger, but instead look as good as they can for the age that they are – a better version of themselves rather than a different version.

The Transformation Group

These are individuals who are actively looking to change something about their face that they are otherwise unhappy with. The most common requests are for dermal filler to be used to slim their jawline or reduce the appearance of a bump in their nose.

The Beautification Group

These are people who are more celebrity-led and traditionally are looking for bigger lips, contoured cheeks and a smooth forehead. They want to achieve a certain look which is often influenced by the selfie generation and social media.

Many patients are also seeking alternative ways to keep a youthful appearance including skin peels and laser rejuvenation. These treatments are a great way to keep your skin looking great; skin peels work by removing dead cells on the surface of the skin which then results in a smoother, brighter and healthier appearance.chemical-peel-aurora-part-of-the-private-clinic

Depending on what category you fall under will determine the type of treatment needed but also the technique.

With such an extensive list of specialist treatments, it is important that you understand each one and choose the right treatment for you. The most important advice we can give you is that you must consult with a qualified physician or practitioner prior to undergoing any treatment.

We have a team of skin specialist at our clinics across the UK including;

London Harley Street, Birmingham, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Northampton.

Anti-Ageing – What are my options?

April 26, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

The term ‘anti-ageing’ actually started becoming a recognised term in the 80’s with the idea of getting older and looking older becoming a negative thing.

Here at The Private Clinic we prefer the term ‘Pro-Ageing’ as, let’s be honest – there is no defined way to stop the process of ageing, but we can instead help our skin look the best it can for the age it is and the result of that is actually a younger and fresher appearance.

So what are your options?
We have recently launched the Miracle Face Booster package which is perfect for those who are relatively new to aesthetic procedures.

The Miracle Face Booster package was put together by our Non-Surgical Lead Mel Recchia who has described the package as being good for anyone considering anti-ageing treatments for the first time and for those starting to show the first signs of fine lines or the skin not being as radiant.

The package itself includes;

  • Wrinkle Relaxing Injections (one area) – To improve the appearance of lines/wrinkles
  • Juvederm® (Vycross) Dermal Fillers 1ML – To restore fullness and volume
  • Circadia Vitamin C Reversal Serum 15ML – To Increase firmness and neutralise free-radicals
  • Circadia Alpha Beta Peel – A high performance peel which gently exfoliates

As well as the package above, we also have a wide range of treatments that all aim to reduce the signs of ageing. The signs of ageing can include:

Fine Lines and Wrinkles, Loss of volume, Dull Skin, Sun Damage/Age spots and Drooping

Wrinkle Relaxing Injections
Wrinkle relaxing injections are the most popular non-invasive treatment in the UK. The injections are the most effective rejuvenating treatment for reducing the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles. They can target areas such as the forehead, frown lines and around the eyes.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal Fillers are also popular non-invasive treatments that work by restoring volume to hollowed areas to contour your face and to tackle fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment is particularly effective when used to increase volume in the lips and cheeks but is also popular for use in the tear trough area under the eye, around the mouth and your jawline and chin.

Dermal fillers can also be used to achieve the 8 Point Lift which is known as the ‘non-surgical facelift’.

Chemical Skin Peel
Chemical Peels are great for targeting specific skin issues, from fine lines to sun damage and uneven pigmentation to moderate acne scars there is pretty much a peel for all skin types. Although not all of our peels give you that instant change that Wrinkle Relaxing Injections or Dermal Fillers can achieve, you will be treating the skin as a whole to firstly target any issues and then with regular maintenance restore a healthier natural glow.

Thread Lift
A thread lift is another great alternative to a surgical facelift. The treatment gently lifts and repositions tissues that have previously dropped due to gravity. Hollow cheeks will appear fuller and any drooping or sagging of the skin will appear instead lifted and wrinkles smoother. The sutures used in the treatment are completely bio-degradable, meaning they will not need to be removed.

There are plenty more non-surgical procedures including IPL Photo rejuvenation, Laser Skin Resurfacing, Thermage and Microdermabrasion that are also all great at rejuvenating your skin.

With our extensive list of specialist treatments, it is important that you understand each one before deciding, which is why if you are considering any of treatments you should book in for a free consultation to first discuss your skin concerns so we are able to create a treatment plan tailored specifically to you.

We have clinics in; London Harley Street,  Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, Buckinghamshire, Northampton and Glasgow

Meet our new nurse practitioners

February 22, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

We have two new faces at our Leeds and Manchester clinics and we can’t wait to introduce you!

Set within a city deep in history and culture, The Private Clinic of Manchester is located just a 10 minute walk (if that!) from Deansgate Train Station. Walking through the doors, you will be greeted by our friendly team who are there to assist and advise you on our range of treatments available.

However, if you just head north east from Manchester you will come to Leeds, reported as being one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK, it was the perfect location for another clinic in the northern region.

Joining us in both the Manchester and Leeds clinics are Jane Parry and Dawn Lisa who are both Aesthetic Nurse Injectors and we are so happy to have them on board.

Jane Parry
Jane Parry is a Nurse Practitioner with over ten years’ experience in providing advanced facial aesthetics.

Dawn Lisa
Dawn Lisa is an Aesthetics Nurse Practitioner with a passion for advanced facial aesthetics, specialising in anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.

So what are our new nurse practitioners able to offer you?

Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Wrinkle injections are an effective way of rejuvenating the skin and reducing the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles. The treatment works by relaxing the facial muscles to reduce expression lines leaving you with a more youthful, glowing appearance.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal Fillers are used to restore volume back into areas that lack shape and definition. This can be in a number of different areas including;

  • Cheeks
  • Naso-labial folds (nose-to-mouth lines)
  • Marionette lines (lines from the corner of your mouth to your chin)
  • Corners of the mouth that can sometimes make you look unhappy
  • Smoker’s lines (the vertical lines above the lip that appear when you pout)
  • The lip itself (either the body of the lip for fullness or the border for definition)
  • The nose (to reshape and straighten)
  • Tear troughs (the lines under your eyes that make you look tired)

The most popular use for Dermal Fillers is to create plumper looking lips. Volume is often lost from the lips due to ageing but for some you may just have natural thin lips. Dermal filler can be injected into the lips to restore volume but it can also be injected around the edges to define the lip border enhancing the shape of the lips.

Here are some before and after photos of Anti-Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers;

To book a consultation with our new members of staff call 0370 218 6135 and let us know who you would like to see and where.

The Private Clinic
The Private Clinic, tried and tested, fully approved medical products, produced by worldwide, renowned manufacturers. All of our injectable treatments are carried out by cosmetic doctors or nurse prescribers, who have undergone extensive additional training to qualify in prescribing and performing Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers.

By coming to us for your injectable treatments, you can look forward to excellent results, knowing that you’re in the safest hands out there.
