What causes dry elbows, and ways to get rid of it

May 8, 2016 by

Good Housekeeping

Thanks to sporadic weather changes, our skin sure takes a beating – with our elbows being one of the biggest culprits for dry, scaly skin.

We spoke to two skin experts to find out why exactly we’re getting dry elbows, and how to treat the annoying problem.

Why do we get dry elbows?

[…]

Dr Noor Almaani, consultant dermatologist at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, told us other unique factors that contribute to dry elbows. These include:

  • Friction, such as from clothes, or when resting the elbows on hard surfaces.
  • General body dehydration.
  • Smoking
  • Hormonal changes, such as the menopause
  • Hereditary conditions, such as eczema

Are dry elbows linked to any other medical condition?

[…]

‘Some medications such as vitamin A derivatives are also linked to elbow dryness,’ adds Dr Almaani.

It’s also important to remember that the vast majority of dry elbow cases are not due to other conditions or underlying primary skin disease, but instead the disruption of normal skin. In fact, dry skin and something like psoriasis are two completely different things.

[…]

Tips to soften scaly, dry elbows:

1. Avoid using soap-based skin cleaning routines, particularly harsh alkaline soaps and surfactants.
2. Try to avoid exfoliating using abrasive creams and glycolic materials.
3. Ensuring the skin barrier is intact by using regular greasy moisturisers.
4. Avoid taking long, hot showers. ‘This can lead to depletion of intercellular lipids and desiccation of the outermost layer of the skin,’ says Dr Almaani.
5. Vigorous rubbing or exfoliation should be avoided. It might be worth using cushions or padded material when resting elbows on hard surfaces for long periods of time.

What to expect at your skin clinic consultation following Covid-19?

July 17, 2020 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

The government lock down meant that our clinics unfortunately had to temporarily close for a few months. The time has come for us to look at opening the doors of our clinics again. To ensure the safety of our patients and staff, we have had to make a few changes so you will feel comfortable.

You might be looking for a skin treatment such as dermal fillers, skin peels, laser treatment for acne or treatments for anti-ageing such as laser for brown spots, laser skin tightening or rejuvenation. Whatever your condition, you can rest assured that we have a bespoke solution for you.

New Skin Clinic Patients

All new skin clinic patients will be encouraged to have an initial consultation over the phone with one of our experienced patient coordinators. Our patient coordinators are very knowledgeable in the treatments that we offer and will be able to find out which treatment may be best suited for you based on the skin concerns that you have.

This initial consultation is also a great chance for us to send you any products that you may be required to use ahead of your potential treatment, so your skin is well prepared.

If you know which treatment you want, then this is a great way to find out more and ensure that you are well informed ahead of your visit to the clinic.

Existing Skin Clinic Patients

If you are an existing patient, you will be given the option of an over the phone consultation if you are perhaps considering a new treatment. If you are returning to complete a course of treatments or having a repeat of a treatment that you have had previously then you will be given a time to visit clinic with your selected practitioner, doctor or nurse.

Visiting our Skins Clinics

You will be required to come to clinic ahead of your first treatment if you require a patch test. We are only able to offer patch tests in person and you will not be able to book any of our laser treatments if you have not previously had a patch test with us before.

If you decide to go ahead with treatment, this will take place in clinic. We have introduced some new protocols to ensure the safety of our patients and staff which include.

  • Not arriving more than 5 minutes before your appointment time.
  • Patients should come alone, and any accompanying person should wait outside.
  • Your temperature will be taken upon entry to the clinic.
  • Hand sanitiser will be in use at entry and throughout the clinic
  • Face masks should be worn where appropriate.
  • Access to our reception area may be limited.
  • Social distancing should be followed where possible.
  • Payments should be made by card.

Skin Clinic Aftercare

We will still be offering all patients a follow-up appointment to review the results of your treatment however this will initially only be carried out either by phone call or video consultation. Should you need to visit the clinic again for further treatment, this will be arranged following this appointment.

Could suncream RAISE skin cancer risk?

May 31, 2016 by

Express

Could suncream RAISE skin cancer risk? High factor lotion may NOT give expected protection.  However, the findings have been criticised by the boss of the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association, which said the claims are ‘not justified’ because the products were tested on people wearing clothes.

Which? found that the protection offered by Soltan Once Invisible 8hr Sun Protection SPF30 (200ml), Piz Buin 1 Day Long Lotion SPF30 (150ml), Riemann P20 Once a Day Sun Protection SPF30 (200ml) and UltraSun Family SPF30 (100ml) ‘decreased by an average of 74 per cent’ after six to eight hours.

The consumer group said the findings mean that over the course of a day, SPF30 ‘once-a-day’ sunscreen could drop to offer as little protection as SPF8.

Which? said it used British standard testing on the four products as well as a second test in which the sunscreens were applied to the backs of volunteers who spent a day in a laboratory.

They then tested the SPF again after six to eight hours, depending on amount of time each brand claimed people would be protected.

The watchdog also said similar once-a-day claims are not permitted in Australia, because they can lead consumers to believe the creams do not need to be regularly reapplied.

[…]

Dr Noor Almaani, Consultant Dermatologist at The Private Clinic of Harley Street: “For continued sun protection, it is important to re-apply sun cream – this also applies to water-resistant sun cream and the so called once-a-day preparations as their efficacy will depend on whether the right amount is applied to give the protection specified on the bottle.

“Also sunscreens, particularly chemical absorbers, degrade gradually on sun-exposure with reduced effect and this applies to ‘once daily’ applications. In addition, water contact, sweating and rubbing will render the cream less effective and therefore ‘long-wear’ sunscreens can give a false sense of adequate protection with less careful sun protection practices.”

Everything you need to know about sun protection and sunscreen

July 10, 2016 by

The Telegraph

Here’s a thought that might have you running for the nearest tube of sunscreen. For the first time in the UK, more than 10,000 people over 55 were diagnosed with melanoma – the most dangerous form of skin cancer – last year, according to Cancer Research UK. Indeed, rates of skin cancers in the over-55s have risen by a staggering 155 per cent in the past 20 years – they’re rising among younger people, too, but at a rate of 63 per cent. This is, after all, the generation that pioneered the package holiday, who in the Sixties and Seventies let nothing but a little olive oil get between their limbs and a tan. We’ve come a long way since then and now we all know we need high-factor sunscreen. Yet studies show most of us still don’t use it. What’s more, the rules have changed again, with some sunscreens not as effective as we think and new warnings about unfamiliar types of sun rays. Here, we talk to the experts about the new rules of skin and sun.

Don’t bother with once-a-day sunscreen

In May this year, consumer watchdog Which? tested four sunscreens labelled “once-a-day” and found that after six to eight hours, their average SPF decreased by 74 per cent, to as little as SPF 8. “I don’t think once-a-day sunscreens should exist, they’re ineffective,” says Dr Nicholas Lowe, consultant dermatologist and spokesperson for theBritish Association of Dermatologists. “Sweat, face-wiping, exercising, swimming, all mean it just won’t stay on. Put it on in the morning and reapply it at lunchtime.” The Which? research also tested 11 common sunscreens with an SPF of 30 and found own brand sunscreens from Asda, Lidl and Wilko all stood up to scrutiny.

The new rays

We know that sunlight damages the skin because of UVB, the rays that cause sunburn and can lead to skin cancer, and UVA rays, present even on cloudy days, which penetrate deep below the skin, causing premature ageing and are also linked to melanoma. A suncream’s SPF rating relates to protection from UVB, while its star rating – five being the highest – relates to UVA protection. However, UV light makes up only about seven per cent of the sun’s rays. About 50 per cent of it is made of infrared-A (IR-A) light. “IR-A appears to induce free radical formation and penetrate the skin, causing damage that can potentially lead to skin ageing. Traditional suncreams do not generally have IR-A protection,” says Dr Anjali Mahto, dermatologist and spokesperson for the British Skin Foundation.

If someone is concerned about skin ageing, by all means look for a sunscreen with IR-A protection, but UVB and UVA protection are still by far most importantDr Anjali Mahto, dermatologist

While there is no clear evidence that IR-A has a role in the development of skin cancer, she advises seeking out products that protect against IR-A rays, too. Lloyds Pharmacy has launched a range of sunscreens called Solero Triple Defence that protect against all three types of ray.Ultrasun products (available from Marks & Spencer) also offer triple protection. “If someone is concerned about skin ageing, by all means look for a sunscreen with IR-A protection, but UVB and UVA protection are still by far most important,” says Dr Mahto.

[…]

Get SPF smart

In the UK, it’s illegal to label an SPF higher than 50 because beyond SPF 30, there is little jump in protection.

[…]

Apply more

Only about 14 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women report wearing sunscreen. Even when they do, they use around half what they need. You need two milligrams of sun cream per centimetre squared of skin, says Dr Noor Almaani, consultant dermatologist at the King Edward VII NHS Hospital in Windsor and The Private Clinic of Harley Street, London. “Use about a teaspoon for the face and neck, six teaspoons for the whole body and about three to four teaspoons for a child,” she says.

[…]

Protecting children is paramount – five severe sunburns before the age of 18 can double your risk of developing melanoma skin cancer in later life – but be careful with babies. “Babies under six months should not have sunscreen applied to them because their skin is too thin and sensitive to the chemicals,” says Dr Mahto. “They should be kept out of the sun altogether.”

[…]

Sunscreen you can swallow? One day

Last month US dermatologist Bobby Awadalla announced the development of UVO, a drinkable sunblock that he claimed could protect people for three to five hours from sun exposure through its base of antioxidant vitamins.

But Dr Almaani says: “Taking antioxidants from foods such as tomatoes, or applying them topically with products containing vitamins C, A or E have been shown to help protect against the free radical damage caused by the sun’s rays, not as a replacement for sunscreen, but more as an additional form of protection,”

We could eventually create UV protection for certain times of year, as well as bespoke sunscreen products that could protect different types of skinMark Birch-Machin, professor of dermatology research

Meanwhile, scientists are studying plants and bacteria that have natural sun protection which might play a role in the development of new smarter sunscreen formulations. “The algae and bacteria that live in certain glaciers naturally filter out the harmful effects of UV,” says Mark Birch-Machin, professor of dermatology research at Newcastle University.

Can YOU tell the £78,000 wedding look from the £137?

June 13, 2016 by

The Daily Mail

As soon as you get engaged, fantasies of visiting plushly carpeted bridal boutiques and being plied with glasses of champagne before emerging in the dream dress to – hopefully – your dewy eyed bridesmaids are inevitable.

Those tears of joy come at a cost, however, as the average price of a dress from a bridal boutique tends to start around the £1,500 mark.

But in recent months high street brands such as ASOS and Missguided have started providing an alternative – affordable bridal ranges offering dresses that cost from just £35.

FEMAIL set one bride-to-be, Siofra Brennan, 34, of East London the task of trying out four very differently priced wedding looks to see whether a budget gown can feel just as special as a designer dress for your big day.

[…]

Beforehand, I have a bespoke Bride-to-be facial at Harley Street’s The Private Clinic.

It comprises a Circadia Enzyme Peel which helps to dissolve different cellular debris and protein build up and a light Lactic Acid Peel which promotes the effective removal of the uppermost layers of dead skin cells.

Stage three is an Oxygen RX Treatment which increases the flow of blood to the skin cells and stimulates collagen synthesis, resulting in clear and luminous skin with a feeling of firmness.

The treatment costs £185 and afterwards my skin feels so soft I can hardly stop touching it.

However, my aesthetician recommends having it a month before the big day as a trial run to make sure it doesn’t disagree with your skin and again a few days before your wedding, making the total price £370.
