Varicose veins

Man suffering from varicose veins undergoes miracle treatment

March 23, 2016 by

The Daily Express

A FAMILY man who was too ashamed to show his bare legs because of severe varicose veins has undergone a procedure to remove them.

Rob Crowley, 35, suffered with varicose veins so badly they covered his legs from top to bottom and left him in agonising pain.

Despite being an avid swimmer, he was too self-conscious to swim at his local pool.

The Wolverhampton resident, who is a butcher by profession, is often required to stand for long periods of time each day – something which made each and every working day incredibly painful for him.

Speaking about the condition, Rob said: “Whenever I was standing up for a prolonged period of time, my legs would throb which was extremely painful and as you can imagine.

“Being a butcher, I was on my feet for the majority of the day so this was a huge problem for me.”

But it wasn’t just physical pain getting to Rob, he was also suffering from mean taunting and teasing.

On the rare occasion he did show his legs, children would point at them and make comments.

He revealed: “The veins on my legs would make me really self-conscious, especially in the summer. When I was on holiday with my family I would buy really long shorts in order to cover them up. If children did see them, they would point.”

Several years ago, Rob opted to undergo a surgical procedure on the NHS in an effort to remove his veins.

But it wasn’t successful and Rob’s varicose veins returned – more prominent and painful than ever before.

“The pain afterwards was horrendous. But I was then told that the NHS would not fund any further treatment so I looked into private alternatives.

“All the reviews and information I found online pointed me in the direction of The Private Clinic.”

Rob took charge of his health and organised a meeting with Mr Rajiv Kumar Vohra, a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at The Private Clinic in Birmingham.

Mr Vohra advised Rob that a minimally invasive method of varicose veins removal, known as Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLA), would be the best option for him.

The treatment works by inserting a very fine probe into the patient’s leg and delivering laser energy to seal faulty veins, preventing blood from flowing through them. The procedure not only removes the appearance of varicose veins but it also removes the discomfort caused by their presence.

After a couple of weeks of wearing compression garments, Rob was able to appreciate the full results of the treatment. His veins had disappeared and his self-confidence had been restored.

He explained: “I couldn’t be happier with the results. Before I would avoid going swimming, which is something I love to do; now I go three times a week!” *

Varicose Veins – Steve

October 19, 2019 by

Steve is a keen cyclist and member of Worthing Excelsior Cycling Club. However during long rides he found his legs were often cramping up causing him pain and discomfort. Steve had first noticed varicose veins on his legs over 8 years ago and had never been too bothered by the appearance of them but now they were impacting his ability to carry out activities such as cycling, he finally felt the time had come to seek treatment.

Steve started to look into what more could be done to treat his varicose veins and came across Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) treatment which he was a lot keener on than traditional stripping methods that he had heard about via the NHS.

Steve attended a consultation with Mr Dynesh Rittoo at The Private Clinic of Harley Street to find out if he would be suitable for EVLA treatment. He was pleased to be recommended a combination treatment of EVLA and Phlebectomy to remove some of the larger surface veins too.

The procedure was able to be carried out as a ‘walk in-walk out’ procedure at the Harley Street clinic where Steve had already had his consultation so he did not feel as nervous as he potentially would have visiting a hospital and described it as “just like visiting the dentist”.

During Steve’s recovery time he made sure to keep active as suggested by his surgeon and walked 5-10 miles a day, he noted that although there was discomfort at times it was not painful and the biggest challenge he found was not being able to cycle for two weeks!

Now 4 weeks following his EVLA procedure, Steve is still healing but family members have already started to comment on the appearance of his legs, which was something he never really considered. The quick recovery time was a big impact for Steve and being able to return to cycling so quickly after having his procedure was a big bonus for him as he looks forwards to increasing his miles with Worthing Excelsior Cycling Club without the fear of leg cramping.

“Family members have commented on how neat it looks and everything is pretty much back to normal. Some people like to spend money shopping but I’ve spent mine looking after my body and I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Varicose Vein Removal – Martin

October 9, 2018 by

Martin Evans, 36 had been suffering with varicose veins since his teenage years 20 years ago.

Martin first started to notice the initial signs of varicose veins when started to work in restaurants aged 16 and was on his feet for 12-14 hours a day. It was from that point onwards that they gradually started to develop and become more visible on his legs.

Since the age of 19, Martin tried to keep his legs covered up to avoid comments from friends and family members.

A big family holiday abroad meant that Martin had no choice but to wear shorts and swimming shorts which caused a lot of comments which really affected his self-esteem and was the starting point for his search for a varicose vein treatment.

“I went on a big family holiday last year and there were so many comments about my veins that I left the holiday feeling really fed up.  It was after this that I decided that enough was enough and I was going to get them sorted once and for all.”

Martin decided to visit The Private Clinic and met with vascular surgeon Dr Dynesh Rittoo to discuss what his treatment options were.

“Dr Rittoo made me feel at ease from the very first consultation and I felt like I knew exactly what would be going on at every step of the process.”

Dr Rittoo suggested that Martin should have VenaSeal treatment which is a new minimally invasive method of varicose vein removal.

Unlike traditional, surgical methods of vein stripping, which involve a general anaesthetic and can require up to six weeks off work following treatment, the VenaSeal™ treatment is quick and painless, can be performed under local anaesthetic and on average only takes 20 minutes to complete.

Martin didn’t want to take too much time off work to recover and the minimal downtime associated with the VenaSeal treatment was ideal for his active lifestyle.

Varicose Vein Treatment Before After Photo

“I only had to take two days off work and I was back in the gym just four days after the procedure!”

Now a few months on from his procedure, Martin is delighted with his results and can’t believe he waited so long to seek help.

“I couldn’t be happier with results and I would absolutely recommend the treatment to anyone who is suffering from the condition.  I was so impressed with Dr Rittoo and his team, they made me feel completely at ease at every stage of the procedure.”

“My varicose veins have now completely disappeared and I’m free from the condition which haunted me since my teenage years. I’ve got my confidence back and I can’t wait to go on my next summer holiday!”

Varicose Veins – Jen

January 17, 2018 by

Jen had been feeling insecure about her legs for a long time but since she noticed varicose veins starting to appear she has felt even worse as no amount of diet or exercise was going to reduce the appearance of them.

“For every girl displaying their perfect pins on Instagram, there’s me hoping they don’t show or hiding them away.”

Jen had varicose veins on both of her legs with her left knee being the most prominent, this was the one she wanted to focus on first with the aim of getting her right leg treated too if successful.

It wasn’t just the physical appearance of the veins that bothered Jen. She found herself feeling uncomfortable and her legs feeling heavy if she had spent the day on her feet. Jen also experienced itching and discomfort around the vein on a regular basis too.

Jen initially went to see her GP to try and find out the cause of her varicose veins but the usual causes did not apply to her which left her feeling even more helpless.

“It’s usually related to pregnancy, being overweight (sure, I’d like to lose a few pounds but not so much so that I would fall into this category) or spending a lot of time on your feet. None of which apply to me and can’t be the cause. So why it’s happened to me, I don’t know.”

Although Jen tried not to let her varicose veins determine what she did and didn’t feel comfortable wearing she did find; especially in the summer months her fear of wearing a dress without tights particularly frustrating.

“You won’t find me in a short dress that exposes them (not without tights) jeans or trousers are usually my friend. Which has made heatwave dressing a challenge!”

Jen decided that the time had come to finally do something about her troublesome varicose veins and came to visit us at our Harley Street Clinic to find out more about our range of varicose vein treatments including EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation).

“I met with Mr Rittoo who immediately made me feel at ease. He explained the procedure and that it’s a fairly simple and quick – It’s walk-in, walk-out so minimal drama around it.  Which is good, I am of course nervous – as I think is normal having any sort of medical treatment really. But overall I’m really excited. I know I’m in great hands with The Private Clinic who have a long history of treating varicose veins.”

Jen went ahead with an EVLA procedure to treat the underlying causes of varicose veins and a micro phlebectomy to treat the visible branch varicose veins.

“Mr Rittoo – who saw me for my consultation, operation and follow up – plus his team were all fantastic. In particular the nursing staff too, who were very caring and comforting when was having a bit of a nervous wobble on the operation table.”

The procedure itself doesn’t take long and Jen was able to leave the clinic shortly afterwards once she was feeling ready to do so and soon enough Jen was back to work and her usual activities although taking a bit easier than usual of course.

“No-one would have noticed had I not mentioned it myself”

Jen is now four months post-procedure as is feeling really happy with the results of her EVLA treatment and despite some incision marks still being visible she is much more comfortable about exposing them.

“I am really delighted when I look at my leg and no longer see the varicose vein there that made me feel so insecure. I can’t wait until next summer when the small incision marks that remain will hopefully be all healed and I can wear shorts without feeling like an awkward turtle.  I would 100% return to The Private Clinic for the same treatment again and would trust them to take good care of me for that second leg.”

Leg Lession 8

‘Standing all day can make your legs and ankles swell, but other causes of swollen legs are varicose veins and lymphedem, where the lymphatic system fails to transport fluid away from the legs.’ says Mr Constantinos Kyriakides, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street (theprivateclinic.co.uk)

‘Sitting with your feet up, or even better, lying down with your feet up can provide relief’ he adds.  Make sure your feet are higher than your heart.

Varicose Vein Treatment – Laura, 25

September 26, 2016 by

EVLA Treatment for Varicose Veins

“I, personally, am over the moon…I have my confidence back and that feels fantastic.”

We’re all guilty of looking at models and thinking that they can’t possibly have the same body hang-ups as the rest of us. However at just 19, budding model Laura found herself giving up on the profession – not because she’d changed shape or decided it wasn’t for her – but because of unsightly veins that she felt ruined her legs.

Varicose veins are surprisingly common, affecting around 1 in 5 of us. While you’ll often hear horror stories and old-wives tales of how to prevent problem veins occurring, unfortunately the biggest decider in whether they’ll appear is genetics. This means even the most looked-after legs can be affected, sometimes as a mark of ageing (50% of women over 50 suffer from them), and other times on even the most youthful – as in Laura’s case.

Despite being a frequent curse, however, Laura soon discovered getting treatment wasn’t an easy task. Determined to address her veins, Laura turned to the NHS for help but was swiftly turned away; “they informed me that they only treat those who are at risk of bleeding out, so my case wasn’t severe enough”, she explains.

Her situation is a common one with thousands turned away every year despite the fact that the issue isn’t just cosmetic; many patients experience severe itching, aching, heaviness and swelling. As a result, more people are beginning to turn to private treatment to address the issue. Laura only realised this was an option after a family member suggested The Private Clinic in Manchester and that they might be able to help.

Laura arranged a consultation with the clinic’s Consultant Vascular Surgeon Mr. Tahir Hussain, who was able to provide the first glimmer of hope in treating something that had damaged her confidence for so long. Mr. Hussain recommended Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) for Laura’s case; a minimally-invasive, walk-in walk-out method to get rid of veins that doesn’t require a lengthy recovery or stay in hospital.

Mr. Hussain explained that the treatment was recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as the ‘Gold Standard’ of treatment both for its lack of invasion and because of its 98% success rate after 5 years, compared to vein stripping’s 75.7%. Laura decided to go ahead.

“Funnily enough I wasn’t nervous at all before the treatment. More than anything I was just excited to get the varicose vein removed and have a smooth leg again after six years.”

EVLA only takes around 45 minutes on average and, in Laura’s case, she was done within 30, “It  was a lot quicker than I’d originally anticipated it would be”, she explains. Though the biggest surprise came in how pleasant she found the experience, “Mr Hussain involved me as much as possible by keeping me informed about what he was doing throughout the procedure.”

“It surprises a lot of people I talk to but I actually found the treatment itself very relaxing.”

As someone who likes to keep healthy, Laura had originally been worried about staying idle during her recovery, but the EVLA method chosen meant she didn’t need to worry. “One week after the procedure I was back in the gym”, she explains and the only real ‘musts’ for her long-term healing were to wear a compression garment for two weeks and to sleep with her leg slightly elevated.  “I’ve been in no pain other than the odd cramp at night” she explains, “but that’s a small price to pay for these fantastic results.”

One month on from the treatment and Laura is over the moon; she’s able to wear skirts again without feeling self-conscious and she’s had numerous compliments on how great her leg now looks. However, perhaps the biggest gift from the treatment is the confidence in herself it’s given…

“I’m looking to get back in to modelling, even if it’s just as a hobby, but I have my confidence back and that feels fantastic.”
