Varicose Vein Treatments

Varicose veins recovery

March 25, 2020 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Varicose veins are lumpy and bulging veins that can be seen on the surface of the skin. They are most common in the legs but can also appear around the ankle and foot.

Varicose vein surgery is often associated with pain and long periods of downtime but at The Private Clinic we are able to offer patients minimally invasive varicose vein treatments with reduced pain, and downtime but effective and long-lasting results.

We have performed over 7,000 vein procedures and offer the Gold Standard for treatment of Varicose Veins: EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation). Findings show that the success rate after five years for EVLA is 95.4% which makes it our preferred treatment however we also offer VenaSeal, Foam Sclerotherapy and Phlebectomy procedures that can all be performed under local anaesthetic.

What is Varicose vein laser surgery recovery time?

The downtime after varicose vein laser surgery is minimal with many patients returning to work and their everyday activities in the days following their procedure. Full recovery is 6-8 weeks and at this time you will be required to go back for an appointment with your vascular surgeon to assess the results of treatment. In the meantime, you will be required to wear compression stockings and avoid certain activities such as exercise, flying and long periods sat travelling in a car.

When after varicose vein surgery can I exercise?

It is advised that all strenuous exercise is avoided for at least 5 days after treatment, but we recommend keeping active by taking regular walks during this time. We advise on avoiding exercise initially as exercise causes a rush of blood flow throughout the body which could cause the veins that were collapsed during treatment to reopen again before they have had a chance to be absorbed by the body. Exercise should also then be returned to at a gradual pace to avoid any unnecessary injury and strain to the area treated. Contact sports and swimming should be avoided for two weeks.

What are the varicose vein surgery complications?

It is important to remember that unwanted complications can occur with any type of medical treatment but at The Private Clinic we work hard to minimise these risks.

A serious complication following varicose vein treatment is very rare.

In some cases, EVLA treatment may not be able to be carried out by the surgeon due problems getting access to the veins or being able to move the instruments through the vein. In these instances, the procedure will be stopped and rearranged for another date after 1-2 weeks.

Other complications include:

  • DVT/pulmonary embolism
  • Skin burns
  • Nerve damage
  • Leg swelling

These are all very rare but will be discussed in more detail during your consultation.

How to sleep after varicose vein surgery?

Our Varicose vein treatments are all minimally invasive and patients should not be in pain following surgery that would affect them from sleeping. In most cases, patients are required to wear compression stockings and in the initial days following surgery will have bandaging which may make the leg feel uncomfortable. Patients may feel more comfortable having the leg elevated whilst sleeping but this is not necessary. If patients are having issues with sleeping, then we would recommend contacting us where we can offer advice on how to help you feel comfortable during your recovery process.

What are the varicose vein surgery side effects?

As with every medical treatment or procedure, there are always certain risks or side effects which patients should be aware of when undergoing varicose vein treatment. Our experienced vascular surgeon will go through all the risks with you in detail at your consultation so you will be able to feel well informed before deciding to go ahead with your varicose vein surgery.

Common side effects from EVLA and Foam Sclerotherapy include swelling and bruising however this usually reduces over the following weeks.

Common side effects from VenaSeal treatment can include mild pain in the treatment area, inflammation and skin numbness which again should only last up to 2 weeks.

If patients are feeling concerned about any side effects that may be experiencing following varicose vein surgery, we have an expert team on hand to offer advice and a 24-hour helpline should you feel worried at any time.

Will I have leg pain after varicose vein surgery?

All varicose vein surgery procedures in our clinics are carried out under local anaesthetic so no pain should be felt during the procedure. Following varicose vein surgery, patients may experience some discomfort and mild pain as the anaesthetic wears off and again after 4-5 days as inflammation in the treated veins occurs, but this should be easily managed with painkillers and should only last for a few days.

How long will I be off work after varicose vein surgery?

In most cases, our patients are able to return to work very quickly after their varicose vein procedure. For patients who have had a phlebectomy then we do recommend waiting at least 2-3 days before returning to work.

It will also depend on the job role, if patients are in a strenuous job then it may be best to take some time off or request some changes in their role to allow them to return to work without putting themselves at risk.

The Best Varicose Vein Removal Treatments in London

May 23, 2019 by Julia Morgan Leave a Comment

The Private Clinic specialises in vein removal procedures. We offer the latest and most efficient treatments to target all types of veins. At The Private Clinic, we aim to always provide the best, safest and most efficient procedures so you can get back to your normal routine as soon as possible. In this blog post, we will be covering all the vein removal treatments available.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are prominent bulging veins blue or purple in colour that tend to appear around the legs or ankles. Varicose veins appear when the small valves of the veins get damaged and stop working affecting the correct blood flow in the veins. Since the blood flow is restricted, it causes the veins to swell up and bulge out. Varicose veins can sometimes lead to other symptoms such as itchiness, burning sensation or cramping in the surrounding areas. Even though, you may not be experiencing these symptoms varicose veins are often a sign of underlying vascular problems so it is highly recommended to get them checked out by a consultant vascular surgeon.

What are the best treatments for Varicose Veins in London?

There are a variety of varicose vein treatments available. At our London Veins Clinic, we offer the latest minimally-invasive varicose vein removal procedures, suitable for almost every patient suffering from Varicose Veins.

  • EVLA – Endovenous Laser Ablation is the most popular varicose vein removal procedure. This is a minimally invasive procedure with a speedy recovery time performed under local anaesthetic. EVLA uses ultrasound technology to target the problematic veins to then remove them. EVLA is a highly effective procedure with a 95.4% success rate and has achieved the “gold standard” for vein removal according to NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

  • Sclerotherapy –This minimally invasive procedure consists of injecting liquid Sclerotherapy to the treatment areas. This solution causes the vein walls to collapse destroying the veins which are then naturally absorbed by the body overtime. This treatment is ideal for varicose veins that are slightly smaller.
  • VenaSeal – is a varicose vein removal treatment that uses medical adhesive to close varicose veins. The procedure consists of inserting a small catheter into the treatment leg, which guided by an ultrasound will dispense small doses of medical grade Sapheon Glue to close the veins. The veins are then absorbed naturally by the body.
  • Phlebectomy – This procedure consists of making small entry points around the affected areas to insert a hook that will gently remove the veins.

Questions to ask when choosing a Varicose Vein Treatment Clinic

February 23, 2018 by Steffanie Griffiths Leave a Comment

With so much choice available, selecting a varicose vein treatment clinic can be an overwhelming decision. You want confidence you’ll be treated using the appropriate procedure for you, achieve the best possible results and experience a smooth patient journey. But where do you begin? In this blog, we help you out, with several important questions to ask when choosing a clinic, and some important advice.

Who performs the varicose vein procedures?

You may find clinics offer various practitioners for the varicose vein removal procedures, including ultrasound technologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and doctors. This is now possible with clinics offering more minimally invasive varicose vein treatments. However, we only advise only using a vascular surgeon for the treatment, for assurance you’ll receive the best results and care possible.

How experienced is the surgeon, and what are their credentials?

With both having a significant impact on your results, ensure to find out how long the surgeon has been performing the procedure, and how regularly they perform it.

Find out if the surgeon has been board certified within the field of vascular surgery, or if they have obtained a vein-treatment related certification from a respected organisation. This can be found out through research or asking if your surgeon has membership of any of the top vein-treatment related boards or societies. These include the British Society of Endovascular Therapy, the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the European Society for Vascular Surgery and the European Board of Vascular Surgery. Also verify that your surgeon is an expert and has been qualified in treating your specific condition.

Would l receive a preliminary evaluation?

Ensure that the clinic offers a preliminary evaluation or consultation before treatment. This is the only way your surgeon can accurately determine the most suitable treatment for you. A preliminary evaluation involves using an imaging technique to configure the location of your varicose veins, and to check for serious conditions. Leading clinics tend to use a precise diagnostic ultrasound procedure, also known as duplex vein scanning, as the imaging technique.

What are the treatment options available?

Check that a range of procedure options are available, including heat ablation methods, sclerotherapy and surgery this means that you can be provided and will be recommended the most suitable treatment for you. In some cases, a combination of procedure types will be necessary. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, NICE, recommends clinics adopt minimally invasive laser and heat ablation methods for varicose vein treatments. However, if unsuitable for the patient, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy should be used and if unsuitable still, NICE advise surgery as the last option.

Regarding varicose vein treatment options at The Private Clinic, we offer the heat ablation technique, EVLA, representing the “gold standard” technique for varicose vein treatment according to NICE. We also offer Venaseal at The Private Clinic which is a closure system that uses medical adhesive to close the varicose veins. Venaseal is ideal for patients who are nervous about needles only requires a single injection per vein. In the majority of Venaseal cases, you are also not required to wear compression stockings post-surgery making it ideal for those who do not want a long period of downtime. Foam sclerotherapy, and the surgical method, Phlebectomy are also available. Phlebectomies involve small incisions and no stitches, while the surgical procedure, vein stripping, still used by many clinics, requires extensive incisions and a much longer recovery period. We do not offer vein stripping treatments at The Private Clinic.

What is the patient care and aftercare offered?

Your patient journey should involve a consultation with a vascular surgeon, the procedure in as many sessions as required, and as many follow up appointments as necessary. Thorough instructions for pre and post procedure should also be provided. You can also check what else is included in the clinics’ care and aftercare. For example, is there a 24-hour emergency line?, is a patient advisor offered who can offer support in your journey?

This information may be found out via the clinics’ website or by contacting them directly. Reading patient reviews and stories can also provide a strong indication of the care and aftercare offered at the clinic.

Can I see patient before and after photos and reviews?

Patients’ before and after photos can help you gauge an idea of the results you could achieve with that clinic. To access these, check the clinics’ website, social media pages and consumer review sites such as RealSelf.

Testimonials about patient experiences and results are also very helpful for an indication of the experience you could expect. You may find these on the clinics’ website, or websites offering patient testimonials and satisfaction ratings, such as Trustpilot and RealSelf.

A spotlight on Varicose Vein Clinics

May 18, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Here at The Private Clinic we have over 30 years’ experience in offering the most advanced, minimally invasive treatments for all types of veins and we pride ourselves on being one of the UK’s most recognised, specialist varicose vein clinics with nationwide locations.  We are able to offer to offer non-surgical varicose vein treatments to 99% of patients that come to see us and together with our team of pioneering Vascular surgeons we have an impressive success rate for our EVLA treatment.

What are Varicose Veins and how are they treated?

Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen veins that most often appear on the legs but can be seen elsewhere. They sometimes appear blue or purple but are often just noticed as a bulging lump under the skin which can be unsightly and even painful to some.

Firstly we would invite you to come in for a consultation, you are welcome to see an advisor free of charge. When you meet the surgeon we are proud to offer a private surgical scan as part of the consolation fee and at no extra cost to yourself.

There are 4 options for treating Varicose Veins; EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation), VenaSeal, Foam Sclerotherapy and a Phlebectomy.

  • EVLA uses ultrasound technology to locate the problem vein and heat to eliminate it.
  • VenaSeal uses a medical adhesive to to close varicose veins.
  • Sclerotherapy is great for thinner veins and uses a liquid solution which converts to foam, blocking the vein encouraging the body to shut the vein down naturally.
  • Phlebectomy involves a hook to entering very small incisions under local anaesthetic to remove the veins.

To find out more about Varicose Veins and the treatments click here.

As well as impressive results we are happy to report that our treatments require minimal to no downtime, they are literally walk-in, walk-out procedures. Gone are the painful days of stripping veins!

If your veins are the thinner thread or ‘spider’ veins then a simple laser treatment may be the best option for you. Sometimes a combination of treatments is required, that’s why we are firm believers in creating a plan with you and for you, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to your body.

Vascular Surgeons answer your top 9 questions about Varicose Veins

April 4, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Varicose veins are actually very common and can affect more than 1 in 3 adults.

As the weather starts to get warmer you naturally start to ditch the tights and jeans in favour of bare legs but what happens when you are faced with those blue lumpy veins that you forgot about at the end of summer last year!

With over 35 years’ experience in offering the most advanced, minimally invasive treatments for all types of veins, we are one of the UK’s most recognised, specialist varicose vein clinics and we have a team of the most experienced Consultant Vascular Surgeons ready to help boost your confidence ready for the summer!

We decided to put forward some of our most frequently asked varicose vein treatment questions to Consultant Vascular Surgeons , Mr Constantinos Kyriakides, Dr Dynesh Rittoo and Professor Rajiv Kumar Vohra who have given their answers below;

Do the veins that have been treated stay away for good?

Mr Kyriakides: This depends on the type of treatment that the patient is having. I believe the best results are seen after EVLA treatment where there is less than 10% of a chance of the veins coming back. The old stripping treatment method that is traditionally associated with varicose veins had a 60% chance of veins returning after around 10 years. So in comparison EVLA treatment is quite impressive!

Dr Rittoo: When the varicose veins are cut, tied or stripped the cut ends tend to regrow which is part of a normal healing process. When we do EVLA treatment there are no cut ends and the cells at the end of the veins are sterilised and therefore there is less risk of vein regrowth. As a result the recurrence rate from EVLA is very small.

Professor Vohra:  Varicose veins can recur but not necessarily in the same system we like to advise our patients about the anatomy and physiology of the venous system so they know what to look out for in the future.

How long can I expect vein free legs for?

Mr Kyriakides: It is unlikely for the same vein to appear again after treatment, especially when using the EVLA method as the laser is very comprehensive and sealing the vein. You may find that new veins appear and sometimes even normal looking veins you have had for years can develop into varicose veins so it is best to keep a close eye on them. I would say there is a 1% chance of new veins developing for each year after treatment.

Professor Vohra: Depending on what treatment you have the results will vary; your surgeon will be able to discuss the right treatment for you in order for you to achieve the best results.

When can I resume normal activities after EVLA treatment?

Mr Kyriakides: I don’t like my patients to be lying around post-treatment. I recommend walking 4 miles a day after surgery and you should be up and about during the day too. In terms of getting back to exercise it is best to wait till you are 5 days post procedure to avoid any potential injury.

Dr Rittoo: I usually advise my patient that they can return to normal activities as soon as they leave the clinic. The only restrictions are that they should avoid contact sports for about 2 weeks and avoid going swimming.

Professor Vohra:  Most treatments are walk-in walk-out treatments meaning you will be able to resume normal activities straight away, with some limitations obviously. You will be on painkillers for the first 4-5 days so probably best not to do anything too strenuous during the first 5 days post procedure.

Can I drive myself home after treatment?

Mr Kyriakides: I wouldn’t recommend driving yourself home after treatment. Your response time may be less due to the compression stocking and bandages and you may not be covered on your insurance if anything was to happen. You should be fine to drive the following day but maybe avoid long journeys and take regular breaks so you can move your legs around.

Dr Rittoo: After EVLA I do not recommend that you drive yourself home. EVLA is performed under local anaesthetic and following your treatment I usually put a firm bandage and a stocking on your leg. While this may not interfere with your ability to walk, it may interfere with you doing an emergency stop and therefore I do not recommend that you drive following your treatment. The day after your treatment you will remove the bandage but you will carry on wearing the stocking, if you feel comfortable and you know that you are in control of your car you may wish to drive but more importantly you should always check with your motor insurance to make sure that they are happy to cover you in these circumstances. These are my guidelines and I usually modify them to suit individual patient needs.

Professor Vohra: Agreed, you should not be driving for at least 24 hours after any type of leg vein treatment.

Will I have to take time off work after EVLA treatment?

Mr Kyriakides: Previously you may have been looking at 2 weeks off work but we only recommend 3-4 days of work after EVLA treatment. It varies between patients and some are back in work after 3 days whereas others prefer to take the full 4.

Dr Rittoo: Most patients do not need to take time off after EVLA treatment, some patients may experience some discomfort typically a few days after EVLA and they can usually take simple painkillers to control the discomfort.  Most patients can go back to work the day after the treatment.

Professor Vohra: Everybody is different, some patients may need a few days off whereas others I can treat on a Saturday and they will go back to work on Monday.

After treatment, will I be able to see a difference straight away?

Mr Kyriakides: You will be able to see a difference straight away after EVLA treatment, but you won’t be able to go and show off to all your family and friends as you will leave the clinic wearing a compression stocking.

Dr Rittoo: When I perform EVLA I usually treat all visible varicose veins at the same sitting when you take off your stocking a week or two post treatment you will notice a big difference in the appearance of your treated leg. You may notice some bruising but the visible varicose veins will have disappeared. Usually you get the full benefit of your treatment in about 6 weeks.

Professor Vohra: I normally say to my patients to wait and see the real difference 3 months after the treatment.

How long do I need to wear my compression stockings for?

Mr Kyriakides: After EVLA treatment you will be required to wear a compression stocking for two weeks. This should not get in the way of your daily life too much and you will be able to remove it for showers etc.

Dr Rittoo: The use of compression hosiery is an integral part of endovenous treatment. In the first few days following treatment most patients will feel more comfortable wearing the stocking however, the stocking can sometimes fall down or dig behind the knee and some patients when they take the stocking off to have a shower they may feel it is more of a problem putting it back on again. It you are able to tolerate the stocking then you should try to wear it as directed, if the stocking is causing you problems then you may stop wearing it after 48hrs.

Professor Vohra: Compression hosiery is advisable for 2 week but I would say the first 3 days are the most important.

How long can it take after treatment to go on holiday abroad?

Mr Kyriakides: I tell my patients to avoid flying for ideally up to 4 weeks after treatment and I give the same advice for sun exposure too, try and avoid direct exposure to the sun for 4 weeks to avoid any excess bruising.

Professor Vohra: I would recommend no flying for a minimum of 2 weeks.

Treating Varicose Veins: Laura’s Story

February 2, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

It’s a common misconception that varicose veins are a sign of ageing. While they occur more frequently in those who are closer to middle age (50% of women over 50 suffer from them) they can rear themselves at any age, even in spite of the best leg care regimes.

A perfect example of this is Laura, a 25 year old who gave up her dream of modelling at the tender age of 19 all because of varicose veins on her legs.  Refused treatment by the NHS, Laura felt she had nowhere to turn until a family member recommended The Private Clinic Manchester as a possible treatment centre. After consultation and a good talk with our Consultant Vascular Surgeon. Laura decided to go undergo EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation), a minimally-invasive laser method of vein removal.

Laura with Consultant Vascular Surgeon Mr. Tahir Hussain.

The walk-in, walk-out method is performed under local anaesthetic and yields better results (not withstanding quicker recovery) than more traditional, surgical methods of vein removal.

During treatment, damaged veins are located using advanced ultrasound. Once the Surgeon has then mapped the veins and is sure of the cause of the problem, radio-frequency energy is directed at problem veins to make their walls collapse and the bulging blue vein disappear. It takes as little as 45 minutes (or 30 minutes in Laura’s case) and patients are free to leave once they’ve had a rest and their doctor believes they’re safe to return home – no hospital stay required.

This, teamed with the treatment’s success rate, has led EVLA to become NICE’s (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) ‘Gold Standard’ for varicose vein removal. The non-departmental public body outline that the method is far more effective and safe than surgical stripping, with longer-lasting results and a much easier recovery.

For patients like Laura, it’s not just about the veins look that mattered – it’s how they make you feel. Visit Laura’s patient story page to find out more.
