Expert Varicose Vein Surgeon in Leeds

Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon, Mr Tahir Hussain MBBS (Lon) MS (Lond) FRCS (Engl) FRCS (Gen Surg) GMC Number: 3242669 has been a consultant for plastic surgery for 20 years. Born in London, he graduated from the University of London and carried out his surgical training and higher surgical training at a variety of hospitals across the UK.

Mr Tahir Hussain is very experienced in a wide range of vascular surgery including arterial and venous disease. He is a keen advocate of the Endovenous Laser Ablation treatment for treating varicose veins.

Varicose Vein Treatments in Leeds

All of our varicose vein treatments available at our clinic in Leeds are performed under local anaesthetic and you will be able to return home shortly after the procedure to recover.

EVLA is considered the Gold Standard in Varicose vein treatment by National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). The treatment uses ultrasound to locate the veins and then laser heat is targeted into the vein causing the vein to collapse. The vein will then be gradually absorbed by the body over time.

VenaSeal is a great procedure for patients who experience needle phobia as it does only require one small injection per vein. Using a small catheter, the surgeon will guide the VenaSeal tool through the leg dispensing small amounts of medical grade Sapheon glue which then closes the vein. Once the vein is closed, it will then be absorbed by the body. VenaSeal has a quick recovery time and many patients do not need to wear compression stockings following treatment.

Phlebectomy is a very effective procedure for removing large varicose veins that are sitting close to the surface of the skin. Small incisions will be made and the vein will then be removed. The procedure does not require stitches and the results are instant as the vein has been removed, however bruising and swelling is still to be expected and patients will be required to wear compression stockings.

Foam Sclerotherapy is used to treat varicose veins. It is similar to liquid sclerotherapy which is more commonly used to treat thread veins but this solution is slightly different. The foam is injected into the vein causing inflammation before the vein then closes up over time. We also offer liquid sclerotherapy to treat thread veins in clinic.

Thread Veins can also be effectively treated at our clinic in Leeds. We offer liquid sclerotherapy treatment which involves injection a sclerosing agent along the vein which causes the vein walls to become sticky and blood is no longer able to pass through. When no blood is passing through the vein, the capillaries will start collapse and be absorbed by the body therefore gradually disappearing from view.

We are also able to treat facial thread veins with our effective ND Yag laser that can be used to treat individual veins on the face or legs. Pulses of light energy are emitted over the skin which causes the blood in the thread veins to coagulate resulting in the vessel closing. Once closed, the thread vein will then be re-absorbed by the body and blood is redirected to deeper veins where it will no longer be visable.

Do the NHS treat varicose veins?

April 24, 2018 by Steffanie Griffiths Leave a Comment

You want your varicose veins treated in the smoothest and easiest way possible. But what are your options? We discuss the NHS’s approach to correcting varicose veins, including the delay that may be involved in treatment.

So you don’t have to compromise on your comfort and safety and waste any time (if you are ineligible for NHS treatment), we discuss what The Private Clinic can offer you.

Will the NHS treat my varicose veins?

The simple answer is no. The NHS will not usually treat varicose veins for cosmetic reasons, but will treat patients suffering from pain, discomfort or experiencing severe complications with their varicose veins although you will have to meet a various grading criteria to qualify.

If your veins are large and unsightly, but not causing any physical problems then NHS will not be able to help and will advise for you to seek private treatment instead.

How do the NHS decide if you are suitable for varicose vein treatment?

The NHS Vein Grading System shows how the NHS grade the severity of varicose veins and what they can do at each stage. This system also reveals the potential complications that can arise if you do fail to treat your varicose veins once they begin to cause pain.

GradeDescription
1
  • These are very small thread veins
  • Mainly cosmetic and unsuitable for treatment with the NHS
2
  • Isolated, small varicose veins experiencing minor smelling
  • Mainly considered to be cosmetic, and consequently not eligible for NHS treatment
3
  • Bulky, bulging and larger varicose veins, that are filled from a leaky vein deeper within the leg
  • Patients may feel discomfort and pain with symptoms including: throbbing, aching, swelling and soreness – particularly when standing for a long period
  • The NHS usually advise these patients to trial compression stockings
4
  • Established varicose veins with skin changes such as venous eczema (dry and itchy skin at the ankle) or phlebitis (inflamed, lumpy vein)
  • Patients can be treated through the NHS
5
  • Healed venous leg ulcer
  • Eligible for NHS treatment
6
  • Skin changes with active leg ulceration
  • These varicose veins are a venous ulcer, hard to heal and very painful and can be treated through the NHS

Grades 3-6 complications are serious and can impact your quality of life. It’s also important to note some of these conditions may also arise as adverse effects of surgical vein stripping or ligation which is the NHS’s most common choice of varicose vein treatment so it may also be worth researching what varicose treatments are available before deciding to go ahead with NHS treatment.

What are the NHS varicose veins treatments?

If you are found suitable for NHS treatment, this does not guarantee a quick solution. A significant wait may be required before you can be determined eligible for a vein procedure.

Treatment on the NHS usually begins by trialling moderate measures including wearing compression stockings and lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, changing your diet, avoiding standing for long periods and elevating the area while resting.

Your doctor may also prescribe you painkillers as well as cream to resolve skin conditions related to your varicose veins and may advise up to six-months of such self-care measures.

The issue with this tactic, is that your suffering is lengthened, during which time the condition may become worse and develop into something more serious.

If moderate treatments are found to be unsuccessful, then the NHS may decide to perform one of three procedures:

  • Ligation and Striping (surgical removal of veins)
  • Sclerotherapy (special foam is used to close the veins)
  • Endothermal Ablation (heat is used to seal the veins affected)

The challenge of effectively treating varicose veins, however, is their reoccurring nature. With surgical stripping in particular, there is a high recurrence rate; the old fashion method has a 2-year recurrence rate of 33%, 41% after five years and 70% after 10 years. Another problem is that repeat treatments can also be significantly more complicated than in the initial treatment.

One of our patients, Rob came to see us after previously having a surgical varicose vein removal procedure with the NHS but had found his varicose vein had returned and were more unsightly and painful than they were before. Although he was offered additional treatment, he decided to refuse the offer and seek a more effective and minimally-invasive option instead. Rob underwent EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) and was finally able to eliminate his varicose veins.

What other varicose vein treatments are available?

A specialist vein removal centre, we are committed to ensuring you only receive best care and service possible, with your safety and comfort as our priority.

We only offer advanced, non-surgical, minimally invasive varicose vein treatments which are all performed under local anaesthetic by our expert Consultant Vascular Surgeons. 99% of patients that come to see us are eligible for treatment. We do not offer surgical stripping treatment due to its vein recurrence rate, extensive incisions required, safety risk and much longer recovery period.

Our available varicose vein treatments are:

  • EVLA: The Gold Standard Treatment for Varicose Veins by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence), we offer EVLA to most of our patients. The procedure destroys varicose veins using laser heat technology, and has a success rate of 95.4% after 5 years, according to NICE. Our Consultant Vascular Surgeons represent pioneers in the treatment, and have carried out amongst the highest number of EVLA procedures in the UK.
  • Sclerotherapy: This treatment is generally recommended for thread veins, although small varicose veins can sometimes be resolved with liquid sclerotherapy, and large veins, with foam sclerotherapy, if unsuitable for EVLA. This procedure involves the injection of an irritant, which creates inflammation, pushing blood out of the area, and leading to the varicose vein finally shrinking and disappearing. Sclerotherapy is a quick 30 minute treatment without pain, under local anaesthetic.
  • Phlebectomy: A phlebectomy procedure involves making very small incisions so the varicose vein can be removed. No stitches are necessary.
  • VenaSeal: This treatment uses medical adhesive to close varicose veins. It is a great option for those who are needle-phobic and also those who are looking to avoid any downtime as recovery is often a lot quicker than the other treatments. Your surgeon will use an ultrasound to guide a small catheter through the affected veins. The VenaSeal tool then dispenses small amounts of medical grade Sapheon Glue that works to close the vein.

To ensure that you receive the correct and best treatment possible our vascular surgeons need to be aware of any issues so they will always perform a free ultrasound scan of your legs in consultations (usually priced between £350 and £450).

Varicose Veins Removal at The Private Clinic

November 1, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

The Private Clinic is a specialist centre for vein removal. We have been operating for over 35 years and offer the latest techniques and cutting-edge technology for safe, effective varicose vein removal. Our ultimate aim is to provide you with the very best procedures that are not only effective but impede as little as possible on your life; our vein procedures are walk-in walk-out treatments so you can get straight back to your life.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins occur when the tiny valves within the veins do not work properly because they are weaker or damaged in some way. The blood then flows the wrong way and collects in the vein causing it to grow and swell.

As opposed to your normal veins, varicose veins are prominent, often unsightly and bulbous. They may even be painful. They can appear in a navy or purple hue and are most commonly found on the legs and sometimes feet. They can also be related to other symptoms like swelling and cramping in the surrounding areas.

If there is no pain then varicose veins are not dangerous, regardless of this, you should get them checked out by a professional to rule out any more serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). They can develop at any age although it is true that older people are more likely to have varicose veins.

How are varicose veins treated?

The NHS used to treat Varicose Veins regularly but now only do so in special circumstances with long waiting lists. The current recommended course of action is to wear compression stockings, stay mobile and keep the leg elevated where possible. In some cases that is enough to see a difference but for many it is simply not an effective long term solution.

A great advantage of our range of procedures for vein removal is they are suitable for practically everyone. 99% of patients are suitable for treatment with one or more of the procedures mentioned as long as you are over eighteen.

There are several ways we can treat varicose veins:

  • EVLA – Endovenous Laser Ablation is our most popular vein procedure. It is a minimally invasive way to eliminate varicose veins performed under local anaesthetic with fast recovery time. It also happens to be incredibly effective. With EVLA ultrasound technology is used to locate the exact problem vein and shut it down. EVLA is the “gold standard” for vein removal according to NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).
  • VenaSeal – Venaseal is a closure system that uses medical adhesive to close varicose veins. A small catheter will be inserted into your leg once the area has been numbed. Your surgeon will use an ultrasound to guide the small catheter through the affected veins and dispense small amounts of medical grade Sapheon Glue that works to close the vein. Once closed, the varicose vein will be absorbed naturally by the body. VenaSeal is a great option for patients who have a needle phobia as VenaSeal only requires a single injection per vein.
  • Sclerotherapy – For slightly thinner veins Sclerotherapy is a great option. It consists of the insertion of liquid solution which turns to foam which then blocks the vein causing it to shut down and naturally dissolve.
  • Phlebectomy – A phlebectomy procedure is effective on large veins that are located close to the surface of the skin. During a Phlebectomy, a hook enters through very small incisions to the area (under local anaesthetic) and the vein is gently removed.

Sometimes more than one of these procedures is performed to ensure maximum results. This is subject to a full consultation.

A lot of people ask us about vein stripping which is an older method of vein removal. It was much more painful than anything we now offer with a lot of downtime and the recurrence rate was about fifty per cent. We are happy to say that with our procedures the recurrence rate is incomparable. For EVLA it is 1% as of 2017. It is almost impossible that any veins treated by EVLA will return, the body will have naturally ‘eaten away’ the rest of the vein. There is a chance that a new vein will grow close to the treated vein though which is confusing for some patients.

Where can I get my Varicose Veins treated?

To ascertain the best way to treat you we would, first of all, invite you in for a no-obligation consultation. We have locations nationwide for your convenience and treat you in-house so there are no arduous hospital trips and stays and you know you’ll be getting The Private Clinic level care from the moment you decide to get in touch with us until you’re fully recovered. We have a medical team available around the clock in the rare event that you should have any issues or concerns post-procedure.

You can see a specialist advisor at no cost to yourself and when you then meet with the surgeon we are very happy to say that we perform a private scan as part of the consultation fee at no additional cost. We have clinics across the country with our experienced and respected surgeons here to help you.

We have clinics in:

  • London Harley Street veins clinic
  • Bristol veins clinic
  • Birmingham veins clinic
  • Manchester veins clinic

We have every faith in our procedures and only offer them because they are safe, tested and provide proven results but we know that hearing it from someone who has undergone the treatment is worth just as much to you as our expertise, so we’ve collected a few quotes from our patients.

“Six months and three treatments later, my veins…are transformed. I am taking my new legs to Ibiza, where they can embrace miniskirts on a daily basis.” –Jessica Lacey, Beauty Features Editor, Marie Claire -Sclerotherapy with Mr. Constantinos Kyriakides.

“From the time I walked through the front door, the care received from all staff has been consistent and amazing. The surgery I had for my horrendous looking varicose vein was, yes a bit uncomfortable but so worth it when I got to see the results. I am now able to go swimming and, best of all, wear dresses and skirts again. Don’t put your life on hold – just do it!” –Tina – North Yorkshire

“I’m so pleased with the results and it is really life changing for me!” –Nicole Hopkirk – Former Managing Editor, MSN Health

Get your legs prepped for summer

March 7, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Many of us get through winter with our woolly tights, trousers and jeans not even really taking notice of the status of our legs. But all it takes is one big event – a wedding, a party or even a work night out and all of a sudden they become all we can focus on.

Those veins that you have been hiding away since last summer unfortunately haven’t magically disappeared over the winter period but instead they are still there with no signs of fading any time soon.

Now is the perfect time of the year to consider leg vein treatment in order for your legs to be ready for the big reveal once the sun starts to make a regular appearance.

What vein do I have and what treatment do I need?

Thread Veins (Telangiectasia)

Thread veins are also known as spider veins due to their web-like appearance.

Nearly all of us will develop thread veins as we age and you may be surprised to know that one in five women in their 20s will have thread veins. Thread veins can occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the leg and face. Thread veins are actually tiny blood vessels that run close to the surface of the skin. They are most often red in colour but sometimes show up as purple and have a ‘wiggly line’-like appearance.

There is no apparent cause for thread veins; they just develop as we age. Some factors that can cause them to appear include pregnancy, hormonal changes, sunbathing, exposure to extreme temperatures, cortico-steroid medication and radiotherapy exposure.

Smaller thread veins are generally much easier to treat so early treatment and prevention is key before they start to get more difficult later on in life.

Here at The Private Clinic there are several treatments available for thread veins depending where they are located on the body.

  • CoolGlide is a vascular laser system designed to treat thread veins. The laser delivers pulses of light energy which causes the blood inside the vein to thicken and destroy the vessel which is then absorbed naturally by your body. The blood flow is then redirected into deeper lying veins so the problem should not re-occur once treated. Cutera CoolGlide treatment is suitable for the thread veins on the legs, facial thread veins and under eye veins.
  • Sclerotherapy involves injecting the visible capillaries with a sclerosing agent which causes the vein walls to become sticky. Once the vein walls are sticky the blood is unable to pass through meaning the vessel will then collapse and be absorbed naturally by your body. Sclerotherapy is suitable for thread veins on the legs.
  • IPL Photorejuvenation – Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is used on facial thread veins. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses intense pulsed light to heat up the veins causing them to then collapse and be naturally absorbed by the body.

Thread veins treatments are available at; London Harley Street, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Buckinghamshire and Northampton

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged and swollen veins that are often raised above the skin. They can be red, blue or skin coloured. They may also appear lumpy or twisted in appearance. They are most commonly seen on the legs and ankles but can also appear anywhere on your body.

Varicose veins are caused when the small valves within the veins become weak or damaged and stop working. When damaged, blood is able to flow backwards and collect in the vein causing the vein to become swollen.

The reasons why the valves become damaged and cause varicose veins is still unknown and many people get varicose veins for no obvious reason. Factors that can increase your likelihood of developing varicose veins include pregnancy, weight gain and old age.

In some cases varicose veins are actually an indication that something else might be wrong which is why during our consultations we make sure we do a full check-up to establish there are no underlying conditions before we start treatment.

Here at The Private Clinic there are 4 treatments available for varicose veins, your vascular surgeon will explain your options to you and help you decide which treatment is best for you.

  • EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) is performed under a local anaesthetic. The treatment involves laser energy being delivered through a probe which is inserted through a small incision near the knee. The short pulses of energy seal the damaged valve resulting in blood not being able to flow through it anymore which eventually means the vein walls will collapse.
  • VenaSeal is a great treatment for patients with a needle phobia as it only requires a single injection per vein. VenaSeal uses medical grade glue which is dispersed through the affected varicose veins using a small catheter and it works to seal and close the veins whilst re-routing the blood to healthier veins.
  • Sclerotherapy is generally only used for smaller veins but for larger veins like varicose veins a foam version is used. The foam sclerotherapy process is fairly similar to the liquid sclerotherapy technique however the sclerosing agent is instead mixed with gas to create foam. Once a local anaesthetic has been applied the foam is then injected into the vein but the needle is carefully monitored using ultrasound imaging to ensure it is in the right place. The air within the foam is quickly absorbed by the veins naturally but it leaves the sclerosing agent to be able to treat the veins.
  • Phlebectomy is performed under local anaesthetic and it involves making a small incision next to the vein to allow a small hook entry which then grasps the vein and removes it. The incisions are very small so no stitches are required, and you have generally a very quick recovery time.

We have specialist varicose vein clinics with nationwide locations in London, Bexhill, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bournemouth and Northampton.

If you are unsure which treatment or even what veins you have, then we suggest coming in for a surgeon-led consultation which includes a free ultrasound scan worth over £350 to ensure that your varicose veins are examined with the utmost accuracy and your treatment is tailored to you.

When that first warm day of spring/summer arrived this year I’m sure you were itching to get out of your woolly tights or jeans are bare all in your favourite summer frock, but did you still find yourself avoiding this prospect no matter how much the sun shone?

As you gleam in delight looking in the mirror at your new summer outfit, your joy may have quickly subsided as you noticed those familiar leg veins that you had hid away under winter layers and forgotten about… until now.

If you face a summer hiding under maxi dresses, jeans and wraps then I’m sure you will be pleased to know that here at The Private Clinic we have a team of highly qualified doctors and practitioners that are waiting to solve your leg vein woes.

What are thread veins?

Thread veins, also known as spider veins, broken veins or telangiectasia are tiny blood vessels which sit under the surface of the skin. They have a red or purple appearance and are often curvy in shape.

What causes thread veins?

It’s a myth that standing for extended amounts of time can cause leg veins, although it doesn’t help the condition so it is best to avoid this if you know you may be prone to getting them.

They can be common amongst women who have had hormonal changes during pregnancy or the menopause. Other causes include sun exposure, certain medicines, ageing and exposure to extreme temperatures.

In some cases, patients with thread veins actually have underlying vein problems such as varicose veins that are not visible from the surface of your skin, but can be seen via an ultrasound scan of the legs. In cases of underlying varicose veins, these will be treated, before addressing the original thread veins.

How can I treat Thread Veins?

Thread veins on the leg can successfully be treated with sclerotherapy. During this treatment the affected area will be injected with a ‘sclerosing’ agent which makes the vein walls sticky disabling blood from being able to pass through. As a result the capillaries collapse and get reabsorbed by the body.

Other treatment options are laser treatments, such as our Cutera CoolGlide. This treatment involves aiming an intense light directly at the veins causing the blood within them to coagulate. The blood is then diverted to veins deeper below the surface of the skin where it should be.

Depending where your thread veins are or the severity of them can determine which type of treatment may be best. Facial thread veins can also be treated with Intensed Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment which uses intense pulsed light which works by heating up the vein, causing it to collapse and be naturally absorbed by the body. Veins under the eye however are best treated with Cutera CoolGlide.

When will i see thread vein treatment results?

For all thread vein treatment options, a course of 3-5 is recommended for the best results depending on the treatment and severity of the vein. The appearance of small thread veins after Sclerotherapy will be reduced after 3-6 weeks. Larger thread veins may not see results until 3-4 months.

“All I can say is what a treatment! I literally walked in with thread veins on my legs, felt a bit of a sting during treatment, walked out slightly red, and woke up the next day with no veins. Although I could slightly feel the burn, the results were immediate. I have thread veins on my thighs and I could literally see them being zapped away. Thank you Nikola and The Private Clinic team!”
