Endovenous Ablation of Varicose Veins EVLA

How to get rid of varicose veins

August 26, 2018 by Steffanie Griffiths Leave a Comment

If you are unhappy with your varicose veins or worried about associated health issues, you may be wondering what your options are.

If you see your NHS doctor about tackling varicose veins for cosmetic reasons or associated health problems, they will very likely suggest self-care measures such as trialling compression stockings for 6 months. However this can lead to further varicose veins complications and prolong your suffering.

Ultimately, the best way to get rid of your varicose veins and avoid issues is treating and removing them promptly with varicose vein removal treatment by a highly qualified consultant vascular surgeon, at a reputable clinic.

Consultations can be arranged with surgeons, who will undertake detailed assessment of your vein(s), including an ultrasound scan, to determine the best treatment, or in some cases, combination of treatments, for you, from a choice of treatment options.

What varicose vein treatments are available?

A range of modern, advanced, non-surgical varicose vein treatments are available, suited to different types of varicose vein cases. Some clinics choose to offer patients the more archaic method, varicose vein stripping, although at The Private Clinic we choose not to use this method due to its more invasive nature, higher varicose vein recurrence rate and longer downtime.

Please see below a range of non-surgical procedures for varicose veins:

  1. EVLA: Standing for Endovenous Laser Ablation, EVLA is a highly recommended laser treatment for varicose vein removal, with a success rate after 5 years of 95.4% according to NICE. And how does it work? The treatment uses laser heat to collapse and destroy the varicose veins from the inside.
  2. VenaSeal: This is a closure system using safe medical adhesive to close the vein. Often desired by needle phobic patients, the treatment is quick and painless with shorter recovery, and there is no-need for compression stockings post-treatment.
  3. Sclerotherapy: The treatment involves the injection of a chemical into the varicose vein, which damages it and leads it to close off. The affective vein subsequently shrinks and disappears. Schlerotherapy can come in either foam or liquid form. Liquid sclerotherapy is most appropriate for small varicose veins that are not associated with underlying venous reflux and foam sclerotherapy is more suitable for larger varicose veins.
  4. Phlebectomy: A minimally invasive surgical treatment, Phlebectomy treatments involve a hook being entered via very small incisions to the affected area (using local anaesthetic), followed by the vein being gently removed. Incisions are so small that stitches are not required.

How do I choose a clinic or surgeon for my Veins treatment?

  • Ensure that your varicose vein treatment would be carried out by a Vascular Surgeon
  • Having great impact on your results, make sure to find out the surgeons experience, including how long the vascular surgeon has been performing the treatment, and how regularly they perform it. Find out if the surgeon is board certified in the field of vascular surgery or received a vein-treatment associated certification from a respected organisation. Also, check the surgeon is qualified in treating your particular condition.
  • Ensure a range of varicose vein treatment options are available, including EVLA, Sclerotherapy, VenaSeal and Phlebectomy procedures, for peace of mind you will be recommended and treated with the appropriate procedure for you
  • Verify that preliminary evaluations are taken place before treatment, involving an imaging technique (such as ultrasound technology) to understand the location of your veins and check for any serious conditions
  • Check the clinics before and after vein treatment photos, which can provide a good indication of the results you can expect
  • Read patient reviews and testimonials to understand the kind of experience you could achieve with that clinic. These may be accessed on the clinics website, or other online sources such as Trustpilot and Google Reviews.
  • Find out about the quality of service, care and aftercare offered by the clinic. This may be available on the clinic websites, found in patient reviews, and learnt after your consultation
  • Check that the clinic is CQC (Care Quality Commission) certified

Varicose Vein Before and After Photographs

A poll undertaken by The Private Clinic has shown that 46% of people are more self-conscious of having their legs on show due to varicose veins than they are cellulite and that nearly half of people living in Britain would avoid wearing shorts due to their varicose veins.

It is then not surprising that The Private Clinic has performed over 7,000 procedures in treating Vein at our clinics across the UK.  Deciding to treat your varicose veins is a big decision but there are many modern methods these days that do not involve the big downtime that is often associated with varicose vein treatments of the past.

Here at The Private Clinic we offer EVLA, VenaSeal, Phlebectomy and Sclerotherapy to help treat troublesome varicose veins and our team of vascular surgeons have perfected their techniques to be able to offer you the best treatment plan to suit you. Click here to book a consultation.

Choosing the right clinic to treat your veins can be difficult and one of the most common requests we get is for before and after photos. Seeing photos of previous patients results are a great way to see what results to expect as well as showing what varicose vein removal techniques are commonly used by clinics.

How to achieve great looking legs

September 20, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

As the leaves on the trees are starting to turn that familiar shade of orange the majority of us may be mourning the loss of the long afternoons and warmer weather. For some of us however, the autumnal chill is a long-awaited feeling as we dig out the woolly tights and jeans in sheer relief.

For some however, that relief is not just over the excitement of a change of wardrobe, but instead goes a little deeper and is more connected to a feeling of self-consciousness over the appearance of their legs.

There are many reasons why you would want to cover up your legs from prominent veins to unwanted fat deposits but here at The Private Clinic we have a number of treatments to help you get great looking legs that you will be eager to show off come next summer!

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are large prominent veins which take on a bulging or blue/purple appearance that many find displeasing. They are most common on the legs and feet and can cause symptoms such as swollen feet or ankles, aching legs, dry skin and muscle cramps.

Unfortunately for many people varicose veins are not serious enough for treatment on the NHS and you may just be recommended to wear compression stockings, exercise and elevate your legs when resting but these are often not enough to reduce the appearance of them.

When it comes to treating varicose veins we have a variety of treatments but our most popular is EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) which is a minimally-invasive method of destroying dysfunctional varicose veins. The treatment is performed under local anaesthetic and has a quicker recovery time and higher success rates compared to traditional vein stripping.

We also offer VenaSeal, foam sclerotherapy and phlebectomy for veins that are not suitable for EVLA. In some cases it may be suggested that a combination of procedures are performed in order to give you the best possible result.

“Six months and three treatments later, my veins of leg are transformed. I am taking my new legs to Ibiza, where they can embrace miniskirts on a daily basis.” *

Thread Vein Removal

Thread veins are little blood vessels that run close to the surface of the skin resulting in the prominent appearance. They are often red or blue in appearance and are also called spider veins, broken veins or telangiectasia.

Thread veins are not usually dangerous but they may grow in size and new ones appear over time. Some people with thread veins actually have deeper varicose veins. If you are getting any of the symptoms of varicose veins these will need to be treated before thread veins can be treated.

There are again, several treatments for thread vein removal and your practitioner will be able to advise on the best treatment for you. Laser treatments such as the Cutera CoolGlide is a popular choice for smaller thread veins and it involves directing an intense light at the veins which causes the blood to coagulate and redirect to alternative veins below the surface of the skin.  We also offer Sclerotherapy which is when the veins are injected with a solution causing them to collapse and fade.

It is common to require a course of treatment to ensure you achieve the best result but once they have been removed they are gone. Treatment will not stop any new veins from appearing however so things like hormonal changes, pregnancy and weight gain could potentially cause new ones to appear over time.

“I was stoked with the results. I’ll be flashing my pins this summer!” *

Vaser Liposuction

There may be many reasons why someone would want Vaser liposuction but we are going to focus on some popular reasons for wanting vaser liposuction in the leg and thigh areas.

Excess fat around the knees may cause you to avoid wearing shorts or skirts. Fat around your knees can be stubborn and in many cases a good diet and regular exercise can result in a leaner appearance but for some this is simply not the case. The fat around your knees is usually subcutaneous fat and it is often harder to lose as your body essentially holds on to it in case of emergency.

Vaser Liposuction is a minimally invasive treatment aimed at contouring and shaping the body and unlike traditional liposuction it can be performed under local anaesthetic and sedation (if requested). A small probe transmits the ultrasound energy which liquefies the fat cells before they are removed through a gentle suction process.

You will need to wear support garments post procedure and you may experience side effects such as swelling and water leakage from the wound but generally the downtime is minimal with you being able to see results 5-6 weeks post procedure.

Vaser liposuction is also suitable for thighs (inner and outer), Stomach/Abdomen, Buttocks, Flanks, Arms (Bingo Wings), Chin, Back, Male Torso, Knees and Male chest reduction (gynecomastia).

“No one but me would ever notice anything had happened, but I wore shorts with confidence for the first time in many years and my knees garnered their first ever compliments. Subtle enough to be undetectable, significant enough to make a real difference – the holy grail of cosmetic surgery.”

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting® is also known as fat freezing or Cryolipolysis. It is a FDA Approved non-invasive and non surgical fat reduction treatment that treats areas of unwanted excess fat such as on the legs or inner thighs. The treatment uses controlled cooling to target and destroy only the fat cells being treated and is ideal for patients who are looking for gradual fat removal with no downtime.

Over 7 million CoolSculpting treatments have been performed worldwide and treated fat cells are permanently destroyed. CoolSculpting is also suitable for treating the: chin, arms, flanks, tummy, thighs, back and buttocks.

Laser Hair Removal

A recent study has revealed that more than 49 per cent of us hate the idea of hair removal and while that may not be shocking, the fact that an average women would spend on average £23,000 to wax away unwanted hair over the course of her lifetime might be!

Laser hair removal is when unwanted hair is removed by exposing them to pulses of laser light that destroy the hair follicle. Our Laser hair removal treatments are suitable for both men and women of all skin types, including dark skin.

It’s not only your legs but your face, underarms, arms, bikini line, backs, shoulders, chest and abdomen can all be treated too. Usually you will need a course of treatment to achieve the best result but many people will see 80%-90% less hair growth after their course of treatment.

“I am saying to myself ‘why did I wait so long.’ No more carrying my wax around when I travel. No more unsightly hair to be conscious about. Bliss!”
Anon, London

Minimally Invasive Treatment Options for a Red Carpet Entrance

February 27, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Known as being one of the most glamorous events in the showbiz calendar, the Oscars held its 89th academy awards this weekend and the stars certainly put on a show! From the outfits to the hair and make-up, we just didn’t know where to look! Everyone looked stunning and we could only wish to have been there to join in with the glitz and glam of celebrity life.

Of course, the majority of us can only dream to be invited to something as exclusive as the Oscars but we have many events going on in our own lives that are just as special to us. From weddings and parties to fundraisers and nights out there are important times in our lives when we want to look red carpet ready as if we were turning up for the Oscars.

For many however, times like these go from being enjoyable to instead making us feel quite anxious and uncomfortable especially when it comes to deciding what to wear and feeling confident with our appearance.

Here at The Private Clinic we offer a number of minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment options to deal with issues like excess weight and leg veins. One of the most popular reasons for patients to choose to go ahead with procedures is down to a special event lurking that they want to look their best for.

EVLA

If you have varicose veins then the thought of baring your legs at a special event can be just unthinkable. Our EVLA treatment is a minimally invasive way of removing varicose veins. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic which means quicker recovery times and most treatments are completed in under an hour meaning you will be able to head home shortly after with results being seen instantly. Removing varicose veins is a perfectly safe procedure as often the varicose vein is no longer serving any purpose with its role being taken over by other veins.

Vaser Lipo
You’ve had the event marked up on the calendar since last year but despite your best efforts of healthy eating and regular exercise, the weight is struggling to shift. If you are left with some stubborn areas of fat then vaser liposuction is a great way to remove this and leave you with the toned body that you have been working so hard for. Vaser liposuction is another of our minimally invasive treatments performed under general anaesthetic with no overnight stay. You can have vaser liposuction almost anywhere including your thighs, buttocks, stomach and upper arms. The procedure works by using a small probe to transmit the ultrasound energy which liquefies the fat cells prior to them being removed through a gentle suction process. Most patients can see the results straight away but it will be a few months before the best results are seen once the initial swelling has subsided. You will not require any stitches and you will be able to get back to your normal routine within a couple of days.

Hair Transplant
When it comes to hair loss, hiding it is not always an option. Many men opt for hats, hair pieces and even a variety of hair loss sprays, but this can often be a very costly and time-consuming lifestyle to maintain.  Some men openly admit to their hair loss and are not too bothered about showing it but for others it can be a huge factor in their life and can find events, where photos are being taken for example, quite uncomfortable. The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant technique is a minimally invasive way to restore the hairline back to its pre-hair loss position. The procedure works by using donor hair follicles taken from healthy areas of growth on the patient’s own head and then grafting them into the bald or thinning areas of hair. The procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic and many patients are able to return to work the next day. However this is not an instant fix with the full results of the transplant not being seen until 6-12 months later, meaning you will have to plan your treatment well in advance of any special events.

So why not be the one to make a grand entrance at your next special event? Whether you have been lucky enough to be invited to the Oscars or if it’s simply your best friend’s birthday party, you deserve to be the best version of you…because it’s your body.

The Private Clinic
At The Private Clinic, we only offer treatments that our growing team of Doctors and Surgeons specialise in. They are among the most experienced in their field, and you can rest assured that you are offered honest advice and the most suitable treatment for you.

What varicose veins say about your blood pressure?

August 10, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Varicose veins are large red, blue or even flesh coloured veins that are often swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. They are caused by nerves within the veins being weak or damaged which can cause blood to leak back into the veins and collect there resulting in the vein becoming bigger.

But did you know that the majority of the symptoms associated with varicose veins are actually caused by an underlying venous circulatory problem called ‘Venus Hypertension’ or high blood pressure in the vein.

Veins have one-way valves and they are the reason why our blood can go up from our feet to our heart. When we are stood on our feet, the veins flatten forcing the blood upwards through the one-way valves into the calf muscles. When we step these calf muscles flex – again flattening the veins and forcing the blood further upwards.

Unfortunately, these valves in the calf can break over time. When stood upright, gravity applies a downward pull on the blood inside the veins which can cause them to break. When one valve breaks, this puts pressure on the valve below as it increases in size. Eventually, when the majority of the valves break inside the veins it can then cause pressure to rise and this is what is known as Venous Hypertension. When this pressure starts to rise, it can raise the pressure in the branch veins causing more valves to break. Varicose veins start to appear when the branch veins bulge through the skin giving a lumpy appearance.

How can I prevent varicose veins?

Living a healthy lifestyle is key to improving blood pressure, and in return reducing your chances at developing varicose veins. Factors such as being overweight, long periods of inactivity, smoking, old age, leg injury, pregnancy, or unfortunately being female can increase the risk for varicose veins. We recommend that you avoid long periods of sitting or standing. Take regular breaks and move around at least every 30 minutes. Raise your legs for around 15 minutes throughout the day to improve blood circulation. Exercising regularly can improve your circulation aside from maintaining a healthy weight.

How can I treat varicose veins?

  • EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) is a minimally-invasive method of destroying dysfunctional varicose veins. The treatment locates the damaged vein with ultrasound, before using laser heat to collapse the wall of the vein and destroy the cause of the problem. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and yields speedier recovery times, as well as better success rates, than traditional vein stripping. This treatment is considered by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence to be the best method for vein removal and is our number one choice for treating veins; however we do also offer some alternative treatments;
  • VenaSeal is a closure system that uses medical adhesive to close varicose veins. It is ideal for those who have a needle phobia as it only requires one injection per vein. The medical adhesive seals the vein shut, the blood is re-routed through other healthy veins located deeper within the leg and the original varicose vein is gradually absorbed by the body.
  • Sclerotherapy is ideal for smaller veins, it involves injecting a chemical into your varicose vein which damages it and results in the vein closing.
  • Phlebectomy is where the varicose vein is removed via tiny punctures or incisions being made.

During your consultation, your vascular surgeon will go through your options and help you decide which treatment is best for you. As per NICE guidelines, we do not offer vein stripping which requires a lengthy recovery period and does not have as effective results as our other treatments.
