Celebrity Hair Transplants

May 24, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Hair transplants in the celebrity world are becoming more and more common with plenty of male stars admitting to having the treatment and sharing their stories.

‘Doing the Rooney’ referencing footballer Wayne Rooney, who publicly announced his hair transplant treatment back in 2011, he has since returned to Harley Street for a second treatment in 2013.

From his initial announcement, plenty more male celebrities have followed suit, no longer feeling ashamed and openly admitting to having the treatment in order to boost their confidence.

Calum Best is another male celebrity who is not ashamed of letting everyone know about his procedures.  He recently had a third hair transplant in 2015 before his Celebrity Big Brother appearance. The son of footballing legend George Best has said:

“It was nature’s plan was for me to have thin and patchy hair across the top of my scalp. But the great thing is, we don’t have to follow nature’s plan. Hair transplant technology has improved so much in the last five years and I have been able to keep hold of all my hair and wear it in my the same way as I did when I was in my teens.”

But hair transplants go further than the footballing world, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey has also admitted to having treatment after suffering from an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic.  This left him with a swollen face shortly after, which can be common with FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) so it is always important to discuss any allergies with your surgeon before-hand. Ramsey has also since gone on to have a reported second procedure which left him sporting an unusual hairstyle one evening, a tell-tale sign of FUE.

Actor James Nesbitt has become an advocate for hair transplants. Speaking in a promotional video he states how losing his hair was not only a concern but it soon became an addiction.  Being in the public eye made him more aware of his hair loss issues. He goes on to say how he has chosen to use his positive experience of surgery to help others considering hair restoration treatment and the importance of doing your research and finding the best clinic and surgeon that will make you feel confident with your decision.

Australian choreographer and Dancing on Ice judge, Jason Gardiner has gone through his hair restoration treatment in the public eye also. Gardiner previously admitted in 2007 to having intense laser treatments and a hair transplant which involved using donor hair to be placed onto his head, a treatment which he said did not work and since that point decided to accept the fact that he was losing his hair. Used to seeing Gardiner in his trademark caps it was a surprise for him to reveal on TV during an episode of Dancing on Ice in 2011 that he had a head full of hair once more!

It has since emerged that Jason Gardiner went through with a hair transplant procedure called ‘Follicular Unit Transplantation’ but it was 9 months of secrecy before he revealed his new do to the public due to the time it takes for new hair to grow following the procedure.

Geordie Shore star Kyle Christie is a surprisingly young star to undergo a hair transplant at the age of 24. Hair transplant specialists at The Private Clinic have said that it is not uncommon for men to get the treatment at his age, particularly if hair loss is hereditary.

In the press most recently is Kylie Minogue’s fiancé Joshua Sasse, as he’s been sporting an array of elaborate hats and scarves in an attempt to cover up his recovering scalp perhaps. Looking at before images you may not instantly recognise him as being an obvious candidate for the procedure but as mentioned by James Nesbitt previously, any type of hair loss or thinning for men can not only be a concern, but it can become an addiction and can affect anyone’s confidence significantly.

Of course, just because you may not be a budding Hollywood actor or TV personality doesn’t mean you are any less of a candidate for a hair transplant procedure. However, reading these celebrity stories does give you some points to consider before going ahead with treatment;

  • You may need more than one treatment.
  • It is a surgical procedure and not a decision to make lightly.
  • You must do your research.
  • You may have to shave your head or sport a slightly different hairstyle for a period of time afterwards.
  • Do not expect instant results.
  • Do not be ashamed of considering treatment if you are young. Speak to a specialist who will be able to advise you on your best options to reduce hair loss going forward which may not require surgical treatment.
  • Have a good collection of hats and headgear for post-surgery recovery.

Novelty hats aside, a hair transplant is a serious procedure and it is important that you do your research into the different types of treatments and see as many specialists as you can to get the best idea of what you will be able to achieve.

The Hair Transplant patient journey at The Private Clinic

April 7, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

With over 30 years of medical experience behind us, we absolutely understand the fear and anxiety that can come with Hair Loss, and we appreciate the considerations that often come hand in hand when trying to find a suitable treatment.

Patient safety, education and satisfaction form the cornerstones of how we approach and treat those who come to us, so we’re relying on reviews taken from Trustpilot (a customer experience community review platform) to give you a sense of what to expect when you come in for a Hair Transplant consultation and treatment at The Private Clinic.

Prior to your consultation

Hair Transplant procedures are aimed at patients who are suffering from Hair Loss and have bald patches they wish to repopulate with healthy hair. So, for us, the first order of business when you call to book your consultation is to determine whether this is an appropriate treatment for you.

If you don’t have Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia), your hair is only thinning and you have no bald patches, then you should see a hair health specialist, know as a Trichologist. They can determine exactly what’s causing your condition and the best way to treat it. This is particularly the case for women, as female Hair Loss is usually caused by either hormonal imbalances, stress, illness, nutrition or Traction Alopecia.

During your call we’ll ask you a certain amount of key questions to make sure that you’re on course for the right treatment, and we then offer you a choice between seeing one of our extensively-trained patient advisors for free, or to have a thorough consultation with one of our elite Hair Transplant Surgeons for £100. This option exists so as to provide our patients with the opportunity to gather as much information about the treatment before committing to a consultation.

This was exactly the case for Craig, who meet with our Patient Advisor Sorena to determine if the procedure was a viable option for him. He said:

craig

craig_1

Providing our patients with a comfortable environment where they can discuss their concerns with us is an essential part of the assessment process, and at this stage, our patient advisors will also be able to determine if there is any obvious reason why you may not be suitable for a Hair Transplant and if one of our other experts may be of better help to you – saving you time and money.

During the consultation

A consultation with one of our Hair Transplant Surgeons allows for 45 minutes, during which you will undergo a thorough examination of your scalp and hair, followed by a discussion of your medical history.

This is an opportunity to see if there are any underlying conditions and as Arnold found out, you should be wary of clinics that do not address these matters with you.

Arnold  said:Arnold

It would be unethical for us to offer you a treatment if we don’t think it’s likely to be a success. Furthermore, we work with world-class professionals who will only ever offer you honest advice, and will never push you to commit to a procedure, or give you false assurances.

Dr Reddy is one of the most sought-after Hair Transplant Surgeons in Europe.

Your surgeon will discuss any pre-operative measures that you may need to take, what to expect on the day of your surgery, and what kind of post-operative care will be required on your part during the appointment. Most importantly, they will manage your expectations, explain the hair regrowth cycle and the frustration you may feel during the first 4-5 months post-treatment, as well as remind you that your full results may not be visible until 9 months after your Hair Transplant.

On the day of your Hair Transplant

Your surgeon will go over the surgery and the months to follow with you once again before the beginning of the procedure. Depending on your needs and suitability, we offer Shaven (FUE) and Unshaven (UFUE) Follicular Unit Extraction. Both involve healthy hair follicles being individually taken from a donor area and being transplanted to a bold area. As the names make it clear, an FUE requires a shaved head, while it can remain unshaven for a UFUE.

Local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort and a 0.6mm-0.9mm punch device is used to move the hairs. The procedure lasts several long hours, so patients often chose to chat, read, watch TV or even sleep during the transplant, as most patients say they hardly feel any pain.

JCB Reed agreed, saying:

Your Hair Transplant team will be constantly checking up on you during the procedure, making sure that you are comfortable and taking care of your needs.

Follow ups and results

After the FUE the team will restate the post-operative measures you need to take, and provide you with their contact details, so that you can keep them updated with your progress.

Patients tend to worry in the seven months following the Hair Transplant, but remember that during this time of transition, we will be just a phone call away, even if all you need is a reassuring chat.

Andrew and our other Hair Transplant patients have had very positive experiences following their procedures, often saying that the results have been life-changing – which, in the end, is what matters to us most.

Hair growth cycle after FUE Hair Transplantation

July 23, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

With modern techniques, a Hair Transplant procedure can be performed in as little as a day. But, for most of our patients, it’s not the treatment itself that’s the hard part…it’s waiting for the results afterwards.

Before, immediately after and final hair transplant results by The Private Clinic's Dr Raghu Reddy
Before, immediately after and final results by The Private Clinic’s Dr Raghu Reddy

After a FUE Hair Transplant treatment you’ll be able to see your new hair line immediately, but it will take a little while longer for you to reap the benefits of your final results. Everyone’s hair is different, meaning the exact process you’ll go through to see your results will vary massively from everyone else. Your hair will still grow at its normal rate so it’s crucial to remember that undergoing a transplant treatment will not change this and there’s no magic button to speed up the frustrating process.

To understand how your hair might grow after a FUE hair transplant, you need to first of all appreciate your hair growth cycle and how, exactly, each strand grows. A hair’s active growth period is known as the anagen phase and this is where cells in the follicle’s bulb (the place where growth occurs) rapidly divide, causing the hair to grow an average of 1cm every four weeks. When your hair is healthy and not experiencing thinning, 90% of it will be in this phase at any one time where it will remain for around 2-7 years. After its active growth period, hair will then enter the catagen phase (a transitional period where growth begins to stop), followed by the telogen phase in which your hair is released and falls out. Hair loss and thinning occurs when this cycle is disrupted, meaning hairs spend less time in the anagen phase.

After a Hair Transplant, your hair will continue this exact cycle – meaning it will grow at the same rate it did prior to being transplanted.  Most patients will find they shed some of the newly transplanted hairs a few weeks after treatment, which is completely normal and nothing to worry about. This is due to the follicle being starved of its blood supply for a brief period. The follicle and graft will still be in tact, and most patients tend to notice new hair growing around 3-4 months after any loss has occurred.

Before, During, After Hair Transplantation FUE results The private clinic
Your new hair line will be visible immediately, but the final results won’t be visible until the hair has regrown fully a few months after treatment.

Apart from this (which is a fairly standard expectation), the time until your final outcome will be entirely individual. Remember, hairs are asynchonous (in other words they grow out of sync with one another and will always be in different stages at any one time) meaning there’ll be no huge rush of hair. Results can begin to show themselves as early as four to six weeks after the treatment, but your final result won’t be noticable until at least five to six months after. Some patients will take as much as 18 months, depending on their natural hair, to see the results they were striving for. And, while it can feel frustrating, key to making sure everything is coming along as it should is staying in close contact with your clinic and surgeon. They should explain to you what to expect from your recovery and invite you to post-procedure check ups to make sure everything is coming along as intended.

As an (extremely rough) timeline, you might expect:

Day one after hair transplant surgery

You’ll usually be asked to wash your hair extremely gently to get rid of any blood remaining and you should normally expect some soreness, numbness and oozing from the recipient area.

Watch patient Steven Ashworth talk about his results 1 day after treatment:

First week

Scabbing and swelling will start to disappear on around the second to third day after treatment and any redness will begin to subside.

Watch patient Steven Ashworth talk about his results 4 days after treatment:

Second week

By the tenth day after treatment your transplanted hair grafts should be firmly in place, meaning any residual crusting can be gently rubbed off. You may also notice the transplanted hairs beginning to shed – this is completely normal. You can return to your usual shampoo, brushing and combing regime and can get a hair cut if you wish.

Watch patient Graham Satchwell talk about his results two weeks after treatment:

Three to four weeks

Transplanted hair will often continue to shed during this period, and you may look very similar to your pre-procedure self.

Watch patient Steven Ashworth talk about his results 4 weeks after treatment:

Second to fifth months

The transplanted hair will begin to grow again, normally more fine than usual and getting thicker as the months go on.

Sixth to twelfth month

Your hair will continue to grow and thicken during this time, often undergoing texture changes. Most patients will begin to see something that resembles their final result during this period.

Watch patient Douglas McAdams talk about his results 6 months after treatment:

One to two years after

Your final results will be visible. Some patients can take up to 18 months to notice the real changes they wanted, and hair may continue to change after this.

See patient’s Douglas McAdams’ results 1 year after treatment below:

It’s a cliché, but patience is a virtue when it comes to hair transplantation. While the treatment only takes a day, the one thing the skill of a surgeon can’t change is how quickly results will show through, meaning you should expect to wait several months until you see the final outcome. We can’t change how quickly your hair grows, but we can be there with you every step of the way to ensure you’re informed, happy and confident you’ll achieve precisely what we promised.

Recovery after a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant

March 20, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

FUE (or Follicular Unit Extraction) Transplants have become extremely popular over the past few years with a wealth of famous faces including Wayne Rooney and Calum Best undertaking the treatment. Less invasive than the traditional ‘strip’ method of hair transplantation, pioneering surgeons have developed the treatment to produce the most natural results with minimum trauma to the donor area, but what is the recovery process like?

It’s important to remember that every single person will have a different experience from their transplant; firstly the number or hairs will differ massively depending on your needs, and secondly your body reacts to things in different ways to other people. There are no set guidelines on how long any sensitivity may be there, nor an exact date that you’ll see your final results, but there are things you can be aware of to make sure you’re fully informed and prepared for changes.

Hairline design transplant results before transplantation
Before hair transplantation begins, your doctor outlines a new hairline.

Before FUE can take place your doctor will design a hairline that they believe will both suit you, and make the most of the donor hair you have. This will be something they will discuss with you during consultations and meetings so you’re fully aware on what to expect – it might be that your original idea won’t look natural or full enough, their job is to give you the greatest success.

FUE treatment itself is minimally-invasive and performed entirely under local anaesthetic. It begins with your doctor extracting individual follicular units (complete with necessary glands) from your donor area using a specialist punch device that’s only around 0.6mm  to 0.9mm in width. This creates minimum trauma to the area as surrounding tissues are not damaged and there is no need for any incisions  – as a result your risk of any scarring is significantly less and your immediate recovery is much more comfortable. Likewise only minuscule instruments are used to replant each hair one-by-one in the treatment area, allowing for faster healing and a more natural look.

Immediately after hair transplantation to the area
Immediately after transplantation to the area.

Immediately after your transplant you will be able to see the outline of your new hairline, however it won’t necessarily be the result you want to show off. In theory, as the treatment isn’t invasive, you can return to work the day afterwards, but we’d always advise taking a couple of days off to recover and allow yourself adequate space to complete the post-operative instructions. Your doctor will advise on specific directions for you, but a couple of key points may be sleeping with your head elevated and direct instructions on how often to wash your hair and keep it clean.

Four days after hair transplant treatment
Four days after treatment.

A couple of days after treatment, you will already see a huge difference to the original outline, and may begin to experience a little bit of swelling or soreness. However it is important to remember that this will not be your final result and any tenderness will eventually go. After a couple of weeks, at least some of the hairs in the area will normally shed – this is a completely normal part of your recovery and nothing to be afraid of. We normally advise to look out for any bleeding (which may represent a lost graft) during this period, but in the vast majority of cases shedding is completely normal and does not pose any risk to the success of your treatment.

It’s after this that your final hair will begin to make itself known. Remember hair grows at an average of around 1cm per month and your transplanted strands will be no different. Hairs are asynchonous (meaning they grow at various stages from one another) so there’s no way you’re going to have luscious locks after just a few days. Results begin to show themselves properly after about four to six weeks, but a final result won’t become noticeably clear until about five to six months after.

5 months after hair transplantation procedure
5 months after hair transplantation.

Every single patient is different so it’s important to remember that sometimes it may even be up to eighteen months before you have the finished result. The process is one of length – while it may take a while for results to be clear, they should be long-lasting and worthwhile in return.

Is Hair Transplantation a long term solution for hair loss?

February 5, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Up to 50% of men have experienced some form of hair loss by the age of 50, with many seeing signs of thinning in their 20s, 30s and even late teens. It’s no wonder then that FUE hair transplants have become a hugely popular way to address thinning hair – but are they really a long-term solution for the problem?

Hair loss: can it be permanently solved by transplants?

The key factor in answering the million-pound question comes down to your surgeon and their knowledge of your particular case. Quite simply, hair transplants are a permanent solution to restoring the hairline but only (and it’s a big but) if you are a suitable candidate. Transplanted hairs need to be taken from a donor site that will not become bald, so your surgeon needs a thorough understanding of your type of hair loss and what that means for the future.

Are you suitable?

Male Pattern Baldness is the most common form of hair loss with 95% of men who experience thinning locks affected. The condition generally follows a set pattern which starts with a receding hairline and is then followed by thinning of hair around the crown and temples, resulting in horseshoe-esque pattern of hair around the back and sides of the head with a bald patch in the middle. Candidates suffering from Male Pattern Baldness are normally the most suitable for transplants because complete loss of head hair is uncommon, and the common donor area at the back of the head is normally full of stable, healthy hairs that will not be lost.

The importance, however, of understanding how your pattern of hair loss will progress cannot be understated. One of our patients, Paul, came to us having had a ‘strip’ transplant in his early twenties and told us:

“It worked well whilst I still had a good head of hair, but as I got older my hair receded further. By the time I was in my early 40s, I almost had a perfect doughnut with hair from the strip in the centre and a big gap around it.”

Because at The Private Clinic we work exclusively with minimally-invasive FUE hair transplant, we were able to restore this area with virtually undetectable precision and longer lasting results than Paul’s previous attempt. However, his case shows the importance of understanding how your hairline will change in the years that follow, and surgeons need to choose the right method of treatment according to that.

Another form of hair loss, Alopecia Areata, is an autoimmune disease which attacks hair follicles in a generally random pattern. This means that even those hairs that are transplanted from abundant areas of hair can be attacked by the immune system, and we will very rarely perform any form of transplant as a result. Knowing what’s causing your hair loss is vital to how long your results will last. If you don’t understand your pattern of hair loss, speak to an experienced expert who can assess you thoroughly and give you the right information to move forward.

Post-transplant care

Because of how the anatomy of hair follicles and hair growth works, you often won’t see the full results of a transplant until about 6-12 months after treatment. It is incredibly important to follow your clinic’s recovery instructions during this time to make sure your results are long-term.

Depending on your case, some patients may be recommended a course of medication post-treatment. Propecia and Rogaine are known to many hair loss sufferers as options prior to surgery, but your doctor will always advise on whether any medication is advised and, if it is, why.

Summary

Hair transplantation can be a permanent solution to replace hair that has been lost, however, the treatment’s longevity ultimately comes down to how suitable you are for it. A good surgeon should spend time analysing you – if you’re told you’re not suitable, listen to them. You’ll more than likely end up disappointed with the results if you don’t. Providing you work with a well-known, respected surgeon who fully understands your case before going ahead, results can be long-term and can completely transform your hairline and confidence.

FUE Hair Transplants at The Private Clinic

The Private Clinic’s Hair Transplant and Hair Restoration surgeons have the most extensive experience in treating Male Pattern Baldness with the minimally-invasive, no visible scarring, no stitch technique known as FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplantation and have treated hundreds of patients each year. FUE is a minimally invasive treatment carried out under local anaesthetic and unlike the strip (FUT) procedure, you won’t require any stitches. Thanks to our advanced skills and techniques results can be undetectable and the recovery time is minimal compared to previous strip surgery.

After surgery you will be free to wear your hair long or short as there will be no linear scaring across the back of your head and you will instead have natural results with denser packing as the hair is implanted to match your natural hair growth and only select the healthiest follicles to use.

Our surgeons are also the only surgeons in the UK to be able to offer the Unshaven Hair Transplant for those who prefer not to shave their head beforehand.

Hair Transplants for the face

November 13, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Noticing a little more facial hair around recently? No it’s not a new way to warm yourself in the colder weather, we’re in the full swing of Movember; an annual charity fundraiser where men across the globe give their facial follicles freedom for a month to raise money for a good cause.

Since starting from relatively humble Australian origins in 2003, the campaign now runs in 21 countries across the world and has raised over £346 million for a variety of men’s health charities.

However, while the assortment of ‘tashes and beards do amazing work for thousands (and can also look rather snazzy too), not all of us are lucky enough to have Tom Selleck worthy facial hair naturally, and more people are beginning to turn to facial hair transplants to transform their face.  A recent study found that 45% of men are unhappy with the patchiness of their beard or moustache, and last year alone 4,500 men in the UK underwent FUE Hair Transplants.  But how exactly do they work, and what is behind this popularity?

Using the same principles as standard FUE hair transplant procedures, the treatment works by taking individual follicles (including relevant glands) of hair from donor areas and transplanting them one-by-one into the required areas. ‘Stable’ areas for transplantation often include the side or back of head, but can also include body hair depending on the individual circumstance, and hairs can be transplanted to create full beards, goatees, moustaches, sideburns or eyebrows. Because the treatment works by taking individual follicles, it is less invasive than many other methods of transplantation and has significantly less risk of scarring.

Success of a treatment, however, depends entirely on the skill of your surgeon. The average facial hair transplant can take anything from three to nine hours, and the amount of hair transplanted can range from 1,500 hairs for a goatee, to 4,000 hairs for a beard. As each hair is extracted and transplanted one at a time, careful attention and knowledge is needed for the most natural looking, full results .

The face can be completely transformed through the transplantation of hair from one area to another,  and the procedure is perhaps the ultimate in ‘bespoke’ treatment as no individual’s needs will ever be the same as someone else’s. It is practically impossible to give someone a quote of how many hairs they will need until a surgeon has fully looked at you in consultation, and your treatment will never be the same as another. Working with top surgeons will ensure you achieve the very best results – if you don’t want to compromise on the quality of the final outcome, never compromise on the quality of the clinic you work with.

The Private Clinic

We’re proud to have some of the most recognised hair surgeons in the UK working with us, all of whom are specialised in minimally-invasive FUE hair transplants for the face and head.
