good hair transplants

Is Hair Transplantation a long term solution for hair loss?

February 5, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Up to 50% of men have experienced some form of hair loss by the age of 50, with many seeing signs of thinning in their 20s, 30s and even late teens. It’s no wonder then that FUE hair transplants have become a hugely popular way to address thinning hair – but are they really a long-term solution for the problem?

Hair loss: can it be permanently solved by transplants?

The key factor in answering the million-pound question comes down to your surgeon and their knowledge of your particular case. Quite simply, hair transplants are a permanent solution to restoring the hairline but only (and it’s a big but) if you are a suitable candidate. Transplanted hairs need to be taken from a donor site that will not become bald, so your surgeon needs a thorough understanding of your type of hair loss and what that means for the future.

Are you suitable?

Male Pattern Baldness is the most common form of hair loss with 95% of men who experience thinning locks affected. The condition generally follows a set pattern which starts with a receding hairline and is then followed by thinning of hair around the crown and temples, resulting in horseshoe-esque pattern of hair around the back and sides of the head with a bald patch in the middle. Candidates suffering from Male Pattern Baldness are normally the most suitable for transplants because complete loss of head hair is uncommon, and the common donor area at the back of the head is normally full of stable, healthy hairs that will not be lost.

The importance, however, of understanding how your pattern of hair loss will progress cannot be understated. One of our patients, Paul, came to us having had a ‘strip’ transplant in his early twenties and told us:

“It worked well whilst I still had a good head of hair, but as I got older my hair receded further. By the time I was in my early 40s, I almost had a perfect doughnut with hair from the strip in the centre and a big gap around it.”

Because at The Private Clinic we work exclusively with minimally-invasive FUE hair transplant, we were able to restore this area with virtually undetectable precision and longer lasting results than Paul’s previous attempt. However, his case shows the importance of understanding how your hairline will change in the years that follow, and surgeons need to choose the right method of treatment according to that.

Another form of hair loss, Alopecia Areata, is an autoimmune disease which attacks hair follicles in a generally random pattern. This means that even those hairs that are transplanted from abundant areas of hair can be attacked by the immune system, and we will very rarely perform any form of transplant as a result. Knowing what’s causing your hair loss is vital to how long your results will last. If you don’t understand your pattern of hair loss, speak to an experienced expert who can assess you thoroughly and give you the right information to move forward.

Post-transplant care

Because of how the anatomy of hair follicles and hair growth works, you often won’t see the full results of a transplant until about 6-12 months after treatment. It is incredibly important to follow your clinic’s recovery instructions during this time to make sure your results are long-term.

Depending on your case, some patients may be recommended a course of medication post-treatment. Propecia and Rogaine are known to many hair loss sufferers as options prior to surgery, but your doctor will always advise on whether any medication is advised and, if it is, why.

Summary

Hair transplantation can be a permanent solution to replace hair that has been lost, however, the treatment’s longevity ultimately comes down to how suitable you are for it. A good surgeon should spend time analysing you – if you’re told you’re not suitable, listen to them. You’ll more than likely end up disappointed with the results if you don’t. Providing you work with a well-known, respected surgeon who fully understands your case before going ahead, results can be long-term and can completely transform your hairline and confidence.

FUE Hair Transplants at The Private Clinic

The Private Clinic’s Hair Transplant and Hair Restoration surgeons have the most extensive experience in treating Male Pattern Baldness with the minimally-invasive, no visible scarring, no stitch technique known as FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplantation and have treated hundreds of patients each year. FUE is a minimally invasive treatment carried out under local anaesthetic and unlike the strip (FUT) procedure, you won’t require any stitches. Thanks to our advanced skills and techniques results can be undetectable and the recovery time is minimal compared to previous strip surgery.

After surgery you will be free to wear your hair long or short as there will be no linear scaring across the back of your head and you will instead have natural results with denser packing as the hair is implanted to match your natural hair growth and only select the healthiest follicles to use.

Our surgeons are also the only surgeons in the UK to be able to offer the Unshaven Hair Transplant for those who prefer not to shave their head beforehand.

The Private Clinic prides itself on ensuring you have the best quality and most comprehensive care:

How to find a good clinic for Hair Transplant Surgery

February 28, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Finding a clinic that offers the best service can often be a daunting task.  It’s even more confusing if you’re know what you want fixed, but unsure of the treatment options available to you. More importantly, what makes one clinic different from others? How am I sure I’ll receive the best advice and results?

Hair Transplants before and after photo

Hair restoration treatments like FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and U-FUE (Unshaven Follicular Unit Extraction) are of the only permanent solutions for thinning  hair, balding and hair loss for men and women, but only a few surgeons are specialised in the most minimally invasive techniques of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and can deliver life-changing results. So what should you consider before booking an appointment with a clinic?

  • Do a fair bit of research: Let’s face it, booking an appointment or consultation without doing a bit of research beforehand is a very bad idea. You’ll need to know exactly what the hair issue is – thinning, alopecia (hair loss) or baldness – and set some realistic expectations in terms of results of the procedure. It would also be good to get a feel of people’s stories and their experiences with clinics and surgeons – this will give you an accurate account of someone who’s been through exactly what you’re researching.
  • “Dodgy deals”: So you’ve collected a handful of clinics to consider for Hair Transplant Surgery. Now here’s the tricky part – how do you separate the experts from the amateurs, those who deliver results from those who only claim to? Well to help narrow your search, simply avoid the daily deals and massively discounted procedures. Seeing an offer of the sort should immediately raise questions about how busy a clinic really is (to need to make an offer like this) and how experienced their doctors are. You should make contact with the clinic and ask about potential consultation and procedure dates – a longer waiting time is sometimes a good thing and tells you how busy the clinic is.
  • Specialist clinics: Clinics that specialise in FUE and U-FUE transplants are far and few between, and these procedures are the only proven minimally invasive methods for restoring hair to the balding areas. Hair Transplant surgery can be a slightly trickier procedure for people with textured hair types (particularly Afro-Caribbean hair) and very few surgeons in the UK are trained in using FUE and U-FUE treatments in this way.
  • Question and question some more: If you’re not ready to see one of our hair transplant surgeons, we offer free advice from our Patient Advisers who’d be able to answer any of your questions and give you some insight as to what to expect moving forward. You should always ask questions about the costs involved, procedure details, your suitability and the availability of surgeons – this information is usually featured on websites, but you might want to double check over the phone. During your consultation, whether with an adviser or doctor, make sure you cover all the information you require – always make sure you feel comfortable with the surgeon who will carry out your procedure, and never feel pressured into accepting treatment until you feel confident and reassured that surgeon and clinic is the best choice for you. As the saying goes, an informed patient is the best patient.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – How to Avoid Bad Hair Transplants

September 3, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Bad hair transplants are an unfortunate reality. Sadly there is not enough regulation in place and not everyone takes their duty of care as seriously as we do. The past 10 years have seen major improvements in transplant techniques and capabilities. Unfortunately not all clinics utilise the latest techniques and adhere to the very basic tenets of medical care, leaving the patient vulnerable to avoidable age-old problems. We offer 3 big tips to aid your research before coming to any decision about your hair transplant.

Before and After Advanced FUE Hair Transplant by Dr Raghu Reddy at The Private Clinic
Before and After Advanced FUE Hair Transplant by Dr Raghu Reddy at The Private Clinic

1. FUE vs. FUT?

If you’re looking into hair transplants often one of the first debates you will come across with be the FUE vs. FUT debate. Here at The Private Clinic we are committed to the latest, minimally invasive and most advanced procedures so we do not offer the FUT method. It is not so much a debate at The Private Clinic as a clear issue of choice. FUT hair transplants may benefit a small selection of patients more but experience tells us patients like the effective, permanent results and very little downtime associated with the FUE method.

If you’re confused: research, research and do even more research. We are confident in our procedures and believe they offer the best option for most patients but it’s important that every patient comes to understand that too hopefully. We do not pressure our patients and urge them to inform themselves.

2. Take Your Time

Hair loss affects each man in varying ways – some are not altogether obvious and can present themselves in unusual and sometimes uncomfortable ways. Understanding how you really feel about hair loss can be complicated and sometimes downplayed. A hair transplant should not be undertaken lightly, especially if it could be a reaction to a difficult event in your life. Take your time to understand your motivations and this will help you to maintain realistic expectations. Hair Transplants can help transform lives but it’s important to know the limits and know the procedure. For instance the first few weeks after a procedure can be hard on our expectations as there is a degree of shedding – something entirely natural and why we remind patients frequently results will take around 9-12 months to fully show.

3. The internet

The advent of internet has made access to information so much easier but what information can you trust? Businesses have specific interests but so do some forum members and bloggers. Safe, effective cosmetic procedures can often get lumped together with bad, unethical clinics and medical teams – leading to confusion and misdirected criticism. The best thing to do is continue reading what you can on the internet and try and find sources you can trust. Additionally, like anything, exercise caution when you are quoted a low price. Price does not guarantee quality though so make sure you ask your clinic lots of questions about their experience and quality of care.

Harsh criticism is nearly always directed against bad practice and unscrupulous behaviour. Under the right conditions, patients will have been informed about the risks (any procedure has associated risks), how the clinic aims to minimise them and what will happen if things go wrong. Choosing the right clinic is paramount. Please do remember there are plenty of rational, realistic and happy patients out there.

The Private Clinic

As a premium clinic with, what we consider, a good online reputation, we hope our blog and website can be an information source to trust. Having been at the forefront of the cosmetic industry for 30 years, we have built a strong following and considerable reputation.
