Could suncream RAISE skin cancer risk?

May 31, 2016 by

Express

Could suncream RAISE skin cancer risk? High factor lotion may NOT give expected protection.  However, the findings have been criticised by the boss of the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association, which said the claims are ‘not justified’ because the products were tested on people wearing clothes.

Which? found that the protection offered by Soltan Once Invisible 8hr Sun Protection SPF30 (200ml), Piz Buin 1 Day Long Lotion SPF30 (150ml), Riemann P20 Once a Day Sun Protection SPF30 (200ml) and UltraSun Family SPF30 (100ml) ‘decreased by an average of 74 per cent’ after six to eight hours.

The consumer group said the findings mean that over the course of a day, SPF30 ‘once-a-day’ sunscreen could drop to offer as little protection as SPF8.

Which? said it used British standard testing on the four products as well as a second test in which the sunscreens were applied to the backs of volunteers who spent a day in a laboratory.

They then tested the SPF again after six to eight hours, depending on amount of time each brand claimed people would be protected.

The watchdog also said similar once-a-day claims are not permitted in Australia, because they can lead consumers to believe the creams do not need to be regularly reapplied.

[…]

Dr Noor Almaani, Consultant Dermatologist at The Private Clinic of Harley Street: “For continued sun protection, it is important to re-apply sun cream – this also applies to water-resistant sun cream and the so called once-a-day preparations as their efficacy will depend on whether the right amount is applied to give the protection specified on the bottle.

“Also sunscreens, particularly chemical absorbers, degrade gradually on sun-exposure with reduced effect and this applies to ‘once daily’ applications. In addition, water contact, sweating and rubbing will render the cream less effective and therefore ‘long-wear’ sunscreens can give a false sense of adequate protection with less careful sun protection practices.”

How to stop sweating: Top tips to avoid embarrassing patches this summer

July 2, 2015 by

Daily Star

We all know that sweating is a natural and normal function of the human body.

But for some people it goes beyond getting a bit hot and sticky on the tube.

Around two million people in the UK suffer from hyperhidrosis, or excess sweating, and for them it can be a serious source of embarrassment.

With summer well and truly here, Consultant Dermatologist at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, Dr Noor Almaani, provides an insight into how making a few simple lifestyle changes could ease the problem:

1. Diet

Try to reduce your caffeine intake and spices as these foods can activate neurotransmitters, called acetylcholine which can stimulate your sweat glands.

2. Antiperspirant

Apply prescription-strength antiperspirant such as those containing aluminium chloride like Driclor.

This should be ideally applied when sweating is minimal i.e. before going to bed and after a cold shower.

Application can be built up from twice weekly to daily if necessary.

This can be applied to other areas of the body such as the palms and soles (avoid face and genital area).

3. Clothing

If you are prone to sweating, try to wear loose, stain resistant and breathable clothes.

And if your feet are especially sweaty try silver-lined socks and absorbent insoles.

4. Medication

Some medications can lead to increased sweating such as steroids, antidepressants, nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) and opioids so consult your GP.

5. Treatment

If antiperspirants aren’t working you can ask your doctor about medical treatments such as Botox injections which can banish excessive sweating for up to a year.

Busting common sun cream myths

July 22, 2015 by

The Times of India

We live in a time where information is in abundance and we’re not always sure what to do with them. Sunscreen being one of them. Despite hundreds of sun protection data and solution found over the Internet, there are many of us who are still hazy on the subject of UV-rays protection creams and how to best use it.

Take it or leave it, your sunscreen ignorance can put your health on the line. Improper sun protection can cause skin cancer and wrinkles among other such skin conditions. And just when we thought we knew everything about protecting our skin from sun damage, the experts have dispelled every myth we’ve been following.

So here we are separating facts from fiction to keep the skin safe this summer. Consultant dermatologist Dr Noor Almaani dispels every myth about your sunscreen, as reported by Daily Mail.

There are two types of ultraviolet lights: UVB, which causes sunburn, and UVA, which penetrates the skin more deeply and can cause wrinkles. Both UVB and UVA rays can lead to skin cancer.

MYTH – Cloud protect you from sun’s harmful rays

This is a major mistake millions are guilty of making – ditching the sun cream because it is cloudy outside. The myth is that clouds offer protection against the sun’s harmful rays. But the experts disagree. Dr Almaani says the idea simply is not true. “UV rays have the same intensity during daylight hours the whole year round, it is not weather or season dependent.” Further adding: “They can seep through clouds so even on overcast days, when it’s grey and miserable, it’s important to wear SPF.”

MYTH – Expensive sun cream offers more protection

The assumption that the more you pay for a sun cream, the more protection it offers is anything but true, which the expert agrees with.

MYTH – UVA rays are only measured by a star rating

The star rating – where five stars indicates the greatest level of protection against UVA rays – was an initiative introduced by retailers.

MYTH – Sun cream doesn’t go out of date

False. Sun cream does have a shelf life and it should be adhered to. If you use out-of-date sunscreen, you won’t be getting the levels of protection you think you are.

MYTH – You can’t catch the sun through the car window

Another common misconception, is the idea that you can’t catch a tan through glass. Many drivers across the world think their car windscreen will protect their skin. But, Dr Almaani says, “This is simply not true. As mentioned previously, UVB rays contain healthy vitamin D, however, these rays can’t penetrate glass unlike the more harmful UVA rays. This means, then, that people tend to age more on the side of their bodies that is often exposed to sunlight and the deeper layers of skin are being harmed.”

“So if you sit near a window at work or drive a lot for your job then make sure you’re using lashings of SPF to protect your skin and prevent premature ageing.”

MYTH – Once-a-day sun creams work

“For continued sun protection, it is important to reapply sun cream,” Dr Almaani suggests. “This also applies to water-resistant sun cream and the so-called ‘once-a-day’ preparations, as their efficacy will depend on whether the right amount is applied, to give the protection specified on the bottle.”

“Also sunscreens, particularly chemical absorbers, degrade gradually on sun-exposure with reduced effect and this applies to ‘once daily’ applications.”

Further explaining how the sun cream wear off, Dr Almaani adds, “In addition, water contact, sweating and rubbing will render the cream less effective and therefore ‘long-wear’ sunscreens can give a false sense of adequate protection with less careful sun protection practices.”

We asked an expert how to grow facial hair

May 31, 2015 by

The Tab

Apparently you can even get a beard transplant.

There’s a reason we all love a good beard – they look awesome. Just ask the historical MVPs: Abraham Lincoln, William Shakespeare and Jesus all knew how to work a brush.

They’re the ultimate symbol of masculinity, the pinnacle of manliness, the epitome of what it is to be a man who knows what he wants and knows how to get it.

As a depressingly fresh faced 19-year-old fresher, in the prime of my youth, all I want is a bit of a five o’clock shadow. I don’t have Dan Bilzerian inspired aspirations, but I’m fed up of looking like one of the Rugrats.

Every October my tension builds as I reach yet another Movember, unable to play my part in fund-raising and manly banter. Never have I been able to highlight how hard I’m revising with an unkept stubble, and never have I felt truly macho.

Just last week a friend of mine grew out his beard which he then shaved off in a terrific attempt to raise money for charity, accumulating over £800 in donations. How am I to save the children of Ghana with my prepubescent pathetic-ness?

I decided to find out some different methods  and asked Dermatologist Dr. Noor Almaani from the The Private Clinic for her advice.

Dr. Almaani is a dermatologist and has published a number of articles on the study of the skin, she told me whether I could ever achieve my dreams.

According to her, it’s all in the genetics.  Boyish beard growers will be devastated to know that a lot of facial hair development comes down to genetics.

The good Dr told me rather vaguely: “Some men are not able to achieve a satisfactory level of hair density; this is more often than not, due to genetic factors. Genetic, dietary, physical and environmental factors can interplay to influence hair growth.”

So what can you do about it if you don’t have hairy genetics? Dr. Almaani advised: “Eating red meat two to three times a week as well as green leafy vegetables can help to promote hair growth.

“Shaving does not stimulate hair growth or increase hair thickness, however it can give the appearance of a fuller beard as blunted ends can appear thicker after shaving.

You could also turn to the meds…

Doccy A added: “Taking Minoxidil in two or five per cent concentrations, twice daily, can reinvigorate shrunken hair follicles and increase the thickening of hair. Melatonin contained in some shampoos can also induce hair growth.”

But bad-luck if you’re looking for a miracle – apparently it can take up to four months to see the effect, and when you stop taking it, the hair stops coming.

If you’re lack of bristle really gets to you, there’s always surgery and “an FUE beard transplant procedure could be the best option.”

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure, as used for hair transplants, is a minimally invasive procedure used to restore hair density on different areas of the face.

An FUE Beard Transplant is a walk-in walk-out procedure and only local anaesthetic is used to ensure minimal downtime.

During the procedure the Surgeon locates the ‘stable zone area’ at the side or back of the head. This is used as the donor area for the beard, moustache or sideburns.

FUE is what Wayne Rooney underwent (on the top of his head, not his beard) and can cost around £2.50 per hair.

The ultimate bride-to-be facial

February 18, 2016 by

County Wedding Magazines

A fabulous new facial has just been launched by The Private Clinic, Cheapside, London.

The ‘Red Carpet Facial’ is a three stage treatment which leaves the face looking dramatically rejuvenated, revitalised and younger, just in time for the big day.

Stage one of the treatment is a Circadia Enzyme Peel which helps to dissolve different cellular debris and protein build up, leaving the skin soft, clear and more receptive to subsequent correction.

Stage two is a light Lactic Acid Peel which promotes the effective removal of the uppermost layers of dead skin cells whilst protecting the skin’s lipid barrier giving the skin a much healthier appearance.

Finally, stage three is an Oxygen RX Treatment which increases the flow of blood to the skin cells and stimulates collagen synthesis, resulting in clear and luminous skin with a feeling of firmness.

This three stage treatment can be delivered all in one sitting. This treatment is walk-in, walk-out and offers the patient immediate results, making it a very popular treatment amongst women in the run up to their wedding day and we think it’s well worth investing in. *
