The cost of Hair Restoration

January 30, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

It can be rather scary when your hair starts thinning and even more so if it escalates into full-blown Hair Loss.

The good thing is that you no longer have to just sit there and accept your fate. Medical advances have made it possible to restore thinning hair, while surgical breakthroughs allow for individual hairs to be transplanted from one area to the next, without having to remove slivers of your scalp (as required by the now archaic strip hair transplant method).

private_clinic_male_added_bleed

All in all, we’d say that the future looks bright for those of you worried about Hair Loss, which is why we’ve compiled a helpful guide that goes through your treatment options and their cost.

Trichology

Unless you have bald patches and a clearly receding hairline, you might not yet be at a stage where you need a Hair Transplant. That’s good news!

Your hair might just be thinning, which means that with the correct treatment it can be restored. A Trichologist will go over all the different factors that might affect your hair health and thoroughly inspect your hair and scalp, to diagnose what’s causing your hair to thin. It’s important to establish that whether any underlying conditions such as an iron deficiency, or a B12 vitamin deficiency, are at the root of your problem.

The price for a full one-hour consultation ranges between £127 to £197, and will enable you to find out what’s ailing you exactly and how to treat it, as well as identifying if you might actually benefit from a Hair Transplant.

Hair Transplant

Our surgeons all use the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to move healthy individual hairs from the back of your head to your balding areas.

The procedure doesn’t cost a set amount of money because it all depends on how many hairs are used during the treatment. We charge approximately £2.50 per transplanted hair, but you can expect to be given an accurate quote during a consultation with one of our Hair Transplant Specialists. That being said, the average bare minimum our patients can expect to pay is around £8,000.

Eyebrow and Beard Transplants

Thin eyebrows can be a result of genetics, a form of Hair Loss or over-plucking, and the same is true with beards – perhaps minus the plucking. It’s essential to see a Dermatologist – which costs £200 – in order to establish your suitability for an Eyebrow or Beard Transplant, because underlying conditions may cause the procedure to fail, and it’s better for you to know in advance so that you don’t end up wasting your money.

An Eyebrow Transplant typically costs approximately £5,000 and includes an optional touch-up if down the line you feel that a small area requires more work.

beard transplants - FUE
Beard Hair Transplants are specialist procedures that require a high level of skills.

Beard Transplants require a specific skill set and are more difficult and time-consuming than standard Hair Transplants. The skin of the lower face is different to that of the scalp and as a result, cannot withstand sustained implantation at the same rate as the scalp. The different approach required for this procedure means that we charge about £5 per transplanted hair and our patients can typically expect the procedure to cost between £6,000 and £8,000.

Please note…

Why do I need to see a Dermatologist before my Facial Hair Transplant?

October 30, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Can you imagine Charlie Chaplin’s face being as expressive and iconic without his gloriously bushy brows and mustache?

No, neither can we. It wouldn’t make him any less brilliant, but facial hair and the way we style it acts to frame our faces and give them a distinctive look.

charlie-chaplin

We receive a lot of interest from people who are unhappy with the thinness of their eyebrows or the patchiness of their beards, but they’re often surprised when we tell them that their first port of call will have to be a Dermatology consultation.

Let’s first quickly look at what  Eyebrow and Beard Hair Transplants entail and we’ll then tell you exactly why going for such a transplant, without seeing a Dermatologist, might result in a waste of your time and money.

What do Eyebrow and Beard Hair Transplants involve?

Just as with our usual Hair Transplant procedures, we use the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to take healthy hairs from populated donor areas and move them to facial areas that are lacking in hair.

beard transplants - FUE

We use very fine hair from the back/side of the head for beard, moustache or goatee transplants, and fine hairs from behind the ears for eyebrows.

In either case, the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and involves barely any downtime.

What do Dermatologists have to do with Hair Transplants?

It seems strange, but around the world, it’s commonly recommended to visit a Dermatologist before a Facial Hair Transplant to establish a patient’s suitability for the procedure.

It’s logical – hair follicles reside in the skin, it makes sense that whatever affects it could affect the hair, not least because of the substances it can secrete.

There are some conditions that hide beneath the surface and require the expertise of a Dermatologist in order to be found out.

In some cases, Dermatologist will be able to spot irregularities directly, but most of the time they’ll take a skin biopsy and study hair samples under the microscope to identify them.

What’s hiding beneath the surface?

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition that occurs when your immune system targets hair follicles and one in every 100 people is affected by it. At least 20% of cases are due to genetic predispositions, but the funny thing about it is that it can choose to affect only certain areas of your body and it’s not always easy to diagnose.

For instance, it might not affect your scalp at all, but will have an effect on your eyebrows and beard. In some cases it will affect the eyebrows and eyelashes only. Sometimes, it’ll just be the eyebrows. The point is that it can be very capricious and unpredictable, which is why it usually manifests in patches. For some people it only acts on their neck hairs, so it really does affect everybody differently.

Eyebrow hair transplant before and after photo
Before and After – Eyebrow Hair Transplant.

Even trickier, is Scarring Alopecia (Cicatricial Alopecia), which is in effect a group of disorders that act to destroy hair follicles to then replace them with scar tissue, causing permanent hair loss. All the action takes place under the skin and can’t usually be seen to the naked eye. Bare in mind, otherwise completely healthy people of all ages can suffer from it unknowingly.

Speaking of scarring, when there’s thick scarring to an area, it affects the blood supply to it, so there’s a risk factor that hairs may not grow. Sometimes it even kills hair follicles. With mild scarring the risk isn’t as strong, but if it’s bad scarring, then you’re playing a different ball game.

Whenever any scarring is found, we tell patients that there isn’t any guarantee that the hairs will grow. Most patients will not go ahead with the procedure because nobody can predict how much of the growth will be there since nobody can assess how deep the scarring is and how it affects the tissue underneath.

Before and After – Eyebrow Hair Transplant at The Private Clinic.

Finally, let’s not forget underlying deficiencies. Blood tests can reveal if a person is low on vitamin D or B12, for example, as they affect hair condition and growth, with low levels contributing to the thinning process.

Conclusion

You may at first be surprised when you’re asked to pay £200 for a consultation with a Dermatologist, but think of it this way: you chose to have the procedure done somewhere that doesn’t require you to see one, you go ahead with it but it isn’t successful. That’ll probably be because of one of the above-mentioned reasons. Your only result will be that you’ve managed to spend a whole lot of money for nothing and you’ll be far, far more out of pocket than if you’d gone to see a Dermatologist in the first place.

The Rooney Effect? The Rise of the Male Hair Transplant

June 24, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

After England’s less than inspiring World Cup defeat, it’s impossible to avoid hearing about the country’s only goal scorer, Wayne Rooney. Flashback to three years ago, however, and the England team’s not-quite golden boy was in the news for a very different reason; his first, and very well-publicised, hair transplant.

“I was going bald at 25 why not?” tweeted the England and Manchester United forward in an honest announcement to his millions of fans in 2011. And now it seems more of those suffering are beginning to take that attitude, with UK clinics noting a huge rise in the number of men undergoing the treatment each year.

At The Private Clinic, we’ve already seen a 120% increase in the amount of hair transplants that have taken place in the first half of 2014, and it’s hard to deny the effect celebrity endorsement can have. Dan Jude, journalist and  hair transplant patient at The Private Clinic, wrote in Grazia magazine a few weeks ago that Rooney’s declaration had been the first glimmer of hope he’d had since beginning to lose his hair as a teenager, while TV presenter Martin Roberts  said in the Daily Express of his transplant “When you [see] people like Wayne Rooney and James Nesbitt being so open about having help, you do think why not?”.

The approval of household names certainly helps to break down any stigma that might have been associated with talking about hair loss treatment, but it is perhaps the huge advancement of hair transplant methods that has encouraged more people to go ahead with it. Better technology and pioneering surgeons have meant that hair transplant surgery today is quicker, easier, and more effective than ever before.

The Private Clinic uses a method called FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) which works by transplanting individual hair follicles, rather than surgically extracting actual strips of scalp, from healthy parts of the scalp or body (normally the back of head) to the chosen area. The entire procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and there are no stitches required, meaning significantly less recovery time and hardly any visible scarring (though this does depend entirely on your surgeon’s skills). As well as being minimally invasive, however, FUE also yields impressive results; working with individual hairs means that only the strongest follicles are selected and transplanted into the natural direction of your hair growth.

FUE_Hair_transplant_Dr_Raghu_reddy
Before and after FUE hair transplant by Dr Raghu Reddy

We’re proud that The Private Clinic’s own surgeons Dr Reddy, Dr Luca De Fazio, Dr Mark Tam, Mr Michail Mouzakis and Mr Doraisami Mohan have been behind some of these hair transplant advancements, and their experience is reflected in their work.

6.5 million men in the UK are affected by baldness and hair loss, but thanks to a careful combination of the procedure becoming more talked about and medical professionals constantly improving it, an increasing number are discovering that they don’t have to put up with it. If only we could say the same for England’s football scores…

Tough and Rugged: FUE Beard Transplants

April 4, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Among all the features that represent masculinity, facial hair is one that is often thought as the most obvious trait that a man can possess – so it’s certainly no surprise that FUE Hair Transplants are popular for men that desire a thicker and more dense beard.

New York has seen a boom in facial hair transplants recently as young men seek to reflect the facial fashion of the stars. Ryan Gosling, David Beckham, Ben Affleck and Hugh Jackman are just some of the celebrities who are trending not just for their acting but their facial hair too.

And this boom in facial hair transplants hasn’t remained in the Big Apple either. Our very own doctors at The Private Clinic have noticed an increase in demand as well. The UK in the past year has performed over 4,500 beard transplants as men hope to ‘feel more masculine’. A study noted by the Daily Mail has found that as many as 59% of men think that having a beard makes them feel ‘more macho’ while 45% of men complain of odd patches through their sideburns and beards.

It appears that sporting a good haircut doesn’t stop at the top of our heads. Men are seeking rugged designer stubble, bushy moustaches, big sideburns and full beards in order to finish off their stylish look.

Our very own Dr Raghu Reddy – a top UK specialist in hair transplants – has been helping men achieve a fuller beard for the past eight years. Dr Reddy has noticed more young men coming to him for help. Reflecting upon the patients he has treated he recently stated in the Evening Standard: “Men take pride in having a nicely trimmed beard, so I see a lot of men with patchy beards who want in-filling. They associate having a good beard with masculinity.”

So what exactly does it take for one to have a bodacious beard? In this post, we’ll take a look at how an FUE hair transplant can transform a patchy, stubbly beard into an enviably thicker one.

beard transplants - FUE

What does FUE mean?

FUE simply stands for Follicle Unit Extraction, and is a minimally invasive method for restoring and enhancing hair density on different areas of the face and body, in this case, the beard. During the procedure, the donor and treatment areas are numbed with local anaesthetic, the donor follicles are removed with an ultra-fine punch (less than 1mm in diameter) and carefully implanted onto the patchy, thinning areas that lack density on the beard. This method has gained popularity in recent years due to its results and permanency.

What makes an FUE hair transplant different from other methods?

Many other hair restoration methods (like the FUT Strip method) are surgical, involve scalpels, general anaesthetic and tend to leave unsightly scars making them difficult to disguise. The FUE method uses only the healthiest donor hair follicles, and the procedure is virtually painless. The FUE method can safely extract up to 7000 hairs in one session and during this phase, none of the follicular units are destroyed – another attribute that makes this method truly unique.

True to its minimally invasive nature, there is no stitching, scarring or downtime required, and the results are noticeable immediately.

The Private Clinic

We are a leading UK non-invasive cosmetic group, and have provided outstanding quality treatments to our patients for over 30 years.

Our FUE specialists, Dr Raghu Reddy, Dr Luca De Fazio, Dr Mark Tam, Mr Michail Mouzakis and Mr Doraisami Mohan , have over many years of combined experience in advanced hair restorative treatments and are able to provide our patients with discrete, undetectable results.  For more information on our FUE  treatments, visit our website.

Beard Transplants: Why Facial Hair Transplants Are Booming

August 30, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Beard Transplants in the News: clinics across the UK are reporting a big rise in men seeking facial hair transplants for a fuller beard or moustache. The Private Clinic of Harley Street has also seen a rise in interest and numbers of procedures performed on men for facial hair transplants.

People are having them for sideburn restoration, moustache restoration and beard restoration. Many men are dissatisfied with their hair growth on the face and hair transplants offer a permanent and effective way to deal with the issue. While some men would prefer to use laser hair removal to permanently treat their unwanted hair, many men have the opposite issue. Find out more about your options by reading on.

What are facial hair transplants?

Facial Hair Transplants use the latest FUE Transplant technology to carefully extract hair from the back and sides of the scalp and transfer them to the face. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and it’s a walk-in walk-out procedure. Unlike the FUT technique, there is little discomfort and very little downtime – meaning you can get back to your normal routine quickly.

What’s influencing people?

  • Culture – facial hair is a big indicator and sign of masculinity in some cultures. For instance, it’s very popular in Turkey.
  • Injury/Illness – there are a number of ways hair is affected by illness and injury. If you have a disorder, illness or injury that has affected your hair growth, come in for a consultation with our doctors for more information.
  • Genetics – some men just don’t have the facial hair they would like. While some men have to shave every day, others struggle to find the need to shave at all.
  • Celebrities – see below
  • Fashion – see below

The Celebrity Effect

A survey recently revealed the top 10 celebrities for facial hair, giving you some indication why more and more men are trying to get a better crop of hair on their face. Coupled with that is the rise of bearded male models splashed across billboards and glossy magazines, like GQ. Designer stubble looks set to stay as more and more men take advantage of more relaxed rules at work, the products and services out there for facial hair as well as the popularity of bearded celebrities with women and other men.
