Snoring

The ultimate guide to stop snoring for good

May 23, 2016 by

Men’s Health

It’s the bane of light-sleeping partners across the country. Returning home after a skinful, it’s easy to feel guilty when you wake up to a tired spouse. But what causes your midnight rumblings, and how do you put them to bed? With the help of The Private Clinic at Harley St’s Dr Yves Kamami. And us, of course.

The types of snoring

Gathering intel is your first step in the war against the snore. Snoring can be differentiated into four types depending on the blocked passageway:

– Nose snorers suffer from a partially blocked nasal passage
– Throat snorers have a partially blocked airway
– Palate snorers account for 80% of snorers, with an elongated or thick soft palate at the back of the mouth
– Combination snorers are a mixture of two or all three.

Size matters

One of the biggest causes of snoring is being overweight, making noisy sleepers a symptom of an increasingly unhealthy population. “This excess weight often gathers around the throat which, even in small amounts, can contribute to restricting the airway,” says Dr Kamani. If you’re looking for tips to banish your snoring, there’s never been a better time to start shifting pounds.

Pour decision making

Ever wonder why your partner claims your bed-ridden rumblings are much worse after a few pints? Dr Kamani explains alcohol is a relaxant, which causes the muscles in your throat to soften, creating an airway obstruction.

Chicken Snorema

Booze may be out, but what about the accompanying curry? Forget it. “Eating spicy food could cause acid reflux, which could make your snoring worse,” says Kamani. The US Snoring Centre in Dallas found that acid reflux causes sinus problems, coughing and chest pains at night because acid and undigested food particles travel back up through the airway when lying prone, causing blockages that create snoring problems. Turns out that night out with your mates isn’t going to wait until morning to take its toll on your body.

Back to back

Even sleeping on your back can cause your tongue to roll backwards, blocking your airway further. It’s the reson your partner is right to roll you onto your side.

Dust a minute

A blocked nasal passage may also be a product of your environment. We’re not talking hayfever, it’s your filthy room that’s to blame. “Dust can irritate the nasal passage, causing the body to create a barrier of mucus blocking it,” says Kamani. “When we are asleep our only option then is to breathe through our mouths, increasing the likelihood that we will snore.”

Preventions and cures

Luckily, there are ways to minimise your chance of a night spent snoring, helping you sleep both soundly and sound-free.

Start winding down your drinking after 6pm if you know you won’t be sleeping alone. This gives the relaxant effect of booze time to wear off.

You’ll also have to give up smoking (which will do a lot more than quiet you down after dark). “Smoking causes mucus to build up and can make breathing more difficult,” says Kamani.

Small tweaks to your sleep environment can have a big impact, too. Change your sheets at least once a week and vacuum regularly to avoid clogging your nasal passages with dust. Next, stack some pillows behind you to keep you sleeping on your side.

Over the counter products can help, but this is where it pays to identify what kind of snorer you are: nose snorers can avoid the throat spray, and throat snorers should ditch the nasal strips. The British Snoring & Sleep Association have an interactive test to ID your passage problems so you can hone in on the root of your noise.

Combine these lifestyle tips and your sleeping habits will no longer be registered on the richter scale. Now everyone – not just you – can enjoy a good night’s kip.

7 ways to stop snoring

April 27, 2016 by

The Daily Mirror

Around 20 million Brits suffer sleepless nights because their partners snore. But help is at hand. To mark National Stop Snoring Week, Dr Yves Kamami – ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) surgeon at Harley Street’s The Private Clinic – reveals the best ways to put a stop to those tiresome night-time growls…

1. GIVE YOURSELF A BOOZE CURFEW

Alcohol relaxes the muscles of your tongue which can lead to narrowing of the airways, ultimately resulting in snoring. So don’t have your last drink too late into your evening and it will help you enjoy a silent night.

2. DON’T GO SPICY AFTER LUNCH

Spicy food can result in acid reflux from your stomach and in a number of studies, this has proven to increase the likelihood of snoring. So keep the spicy dishes for lunchtime and stick to safer meals in the evening.

3. SAY NO TO THAT SLICE OF CAKE

Being overweight is one of the most common causes of snoring. The more you weigh, the more likely you are to snore. But losing just a couple of pounds, if you are relatively trim, can have an impact on how often and how loudly  you growl.

4. FIND YOUR OLD TENNIS BALLS

If you snore, sleeping on your back is a bad idea so try to sleep on your side. Sewing a tennis ball into the back of your pyjamas is a sure but extreme way to prevent yourself from rolling over.

5. CHANGE THOSE SHEETS

To avoid excess dust and other particles from building up and blocking the nasal passages, change your sheets once a week and vacuum regularly. If you do this, you may well find that your breathing improves and your snoring is significantly reduced.

6. QUIT THE FAGS

Sorry but the cigarettes have to go. Smoking can enlarge tissue in the nose, called turbinates, which makes breathing more difficult, and increases the chances of snoring. Kick the habit now.

7. GET LASERED

Night-time growls could mean an issue with your nose and throat palate or a combination. Talk to your GP about your snoring or consult an ENT specialist. Throat snorers could have non-invasive laser treatment to help clear the airways on the soft palate in the throat. A similar treatment can aid “nose-snorers” by opening up the nasal passage.

Can’t stop SNORING? Expert shares best ways to breathe easy

April 22, 2016 by

The Daily Express

WE’VE ALL experienced the exhausted frustration from a disrupted night’s sleep.

The loud, abrasive and exasperating sound of someone snoring nearby is enough to make your blood boil.

Snoring is often the source of late night arguments and a contributing factor to marital disharmony.

According to the British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association, snoring is air turbulence vibrating the structures in the upper airway.

It can range in sound from 50 to 100 decibels, the equivalent of a pneumatic drill, which explains its comparison to ‘sawing wood’.

Snoring is often to blame for fatigue during the day, but this nocturnal habit has a host of health hazards that some may not be aware of.

High blood pressure and increased risk of stroke are among the risk factors for regular snorers.

But there are ways to prevent the dreaded habit, aside from a swift jab in the ribs, according to ENT surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, Dr Yves Kamami.

Below Dr Kamami, who is also an expert in the causes and treatments for snoring, shares his top tips for reducing the raucous sleep sound.

1) Limit the booze

We are much more likely to snore if we’ve had a tipple before we go to bed. This is because alcohol relaxes the muscles of your tongue which can lead to the narrowing of the airways, ultimately resulting in snoring. Avoiding that pint of beer before going to bed could therefore help to silence your snoring throughout the night.

2) Stop smoking

Smoking can enlarge tissue in the nose, called the turbinates, which makes breathing more difficult; both of these side effects from smoking are likely to increase the chances of snoring. Kicking the habit won’t just improve yours and your partner’s sleep at night, but it will also improve your overall health dramatically.

3) Avoid spicy food

Spicy food can result in acid reflux from your stomach and in a number of studies this has proven to increase the likelihood of snoring. If you’re unsure why you snore and like to indulge in an Indian takeaway at the weekend, why not test the theory?

4) Find the right sleeping position

If you’re prone to snoring, sleeping on your back is a bad idea. If you’re fed up of being jabbed in the ribs throughout the night by your partner, try to sleep on your side. Sewing a tennis ball into to the back of your pyjamas is a sure way to prevent yourself from rolling over. Extreme? Yes. Worth it, for a good night’s sleep? Absolutely.

5) Get to the root of the issue

There are different reasons why we snore. It could be an issue with the nose, throat, palate or a combination of two of three of these things. Unless you diagnose which of these is causing your snoring you will have no hope in correcting your night-time growls. Talk to your GP about the route of your snoring or, better still, consult an ENT specialist.

6) Find a permanent solution

If you’ve tried everything but your snoring persists, don’t despair as there are treatments available which can significantly reduce levels of snoring. For patients whose snoring is being caused by the throat, a non-invasive laser treatment could  help clear the airways on the soft palate in the throat. A similar treatment, meanwhile, can aid ‘nose snorers’ by opening up the nasal passage. Treatments such as these are carried out under local anaesthetic and take less than half an hour to complete.

Snoring can have a devastating effect on relationships and can cause a number of problems for sufferers as a result of disturbed sleep. Recent research has shown that over 70% of people who try over-the-counter snoring cures do not get the relief they had hoped for.

The Private Clinic have been helping people with snoring and sleep problems for the past 30 years and have treated more patients than any other UK clinic. We offer the latest non-invasive laser and radio frequency procedures to tackle the most common causes of snoring, including blocked and stuffy nose and excess vibration of the soft palate and uvula. If you have tried over the counter treatments without success, this 15 minutes stop snoring procedure could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

If you don’t snore, you are more than likely to know someone who does – between 19% and 40% of adults snore when they sleep, and that percentage climbs even higher, particularly for men, as we age. It’s a nuisance for bed partners, but researchers say we shouldn’t be so quick to write off snoring or other forms of disrupted breathing while asleep as mere annoyances; instead, they could have other health effects.

Laser Assisted Uvuloplatoplasty (LAUP) for Snoring

Snoring is a form of sleep apnea, in which people stop breathing for a few seconds or several minutes dozens of times in an hour. Any disruption of breathing during sleep can affect the brain. Researchers have recently found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), memory loss and dementia earlier than people without such sleep disorders.

Snoring can have a devastating effect on relationships and can cause a number of problems for sufferers as a result of disturbed sleep. Recent research has shown that over 70% of people who try over-the-counter snoring cures do not get the relief they had hoped for. This is because there is no one ‘cure’ for snoring. Some people sleep on their back and this causes their tongue to roll back, others have problems with stuffy or blocked noses, while other people snore because they’re overweight.

Snoring is caused on two levels:

  1. By the nose and throat
  2. By the tongue

The two areas generally make up 100% of the snoring noise.  Dr Kamami can improve the top note noise from the nose and throat with the LAUP procedure. This however cannot take away the noise caused by the tongue.

At The Private Clinic our ENT specialist Dr Kamami often treats snoring patients with partial Nasal Turbinate if the tongue is a contributing factor to snoring. Laser Assisted partial turbinectomy is a minor procedure carried using the CO2 laser to improve air entry to the nose.

Combining both treatments often removes the very loud and disruptive snoring noise (the one that keeps partners awake!) and in effect reduces the noise made by the tongue.  This will also, in most cases cease the snoring noise when sitting (for example on trains and planes). The best option is to come in an see Dr Kamami, he is an expert in his field and he will be able to access the best way forward for you.

If you snore because of a deviated septum, our laser treatment won’t be suitable. However our Consultant Plastic Surgeons will be able to correct the positioning of the septum, via a minor rhinoplasty procedure, also called a Septo-Rhinoplasty, and get your breathing back on track. Dr Davood Fallahdar is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialised in Rhinoplasty procedures. The best way to find out what is causing your snoring is to come in and see us, we have been treating patients for snoring for over 35 years. Book a consultation here.

FAQs

  • What are the best solutions for snoring?

There are lots of solutions out there to help with snoring.Being at an ideal weight, reducing alcohol consumption, stopping smoking and sleeping on your side are some of our best recommendations to help you at home. However in most cases, the best solution is to unblock the airway via a surgical treatment. Our most popular snoring treatment is Laser Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) which is a minimally invasive procedure performed in-clinic at London Harley Street under local anaesthetic. The laser treatment removes excess skin at the back of your throat to open up the airwaves and increase oxygen supply.LAUP is the most popular snoring treatment in the UK and over 40,000 procedures have been performed to date.To find out more, book a consultation with our expert surgeon.

  • What are the treatments for snoring?

This depends largely on the reasons of your snoring.Being overweight: if you have a collar size of 16½ inches or greater, you may not have the muscle tone needed to keep the airway open sufficiently at night to allow normal breathing. This is way a person with a short fat neck is at an increased risk of snoring. Men tend to get fat around their necks and waists, whereas women seem to put on weight around the thighs. However, this situation very often changes for women following the menopause and by the time women have reached their 70s they are just as likely to be snorers as men of the same age. Weight loss with accompanying fat reduction around the neck area will certainly help to alleviate snoring.Sleeping position: while sleeping on your back, your tongue, your chin and any excess fatty tissue under your chin may relax back and squash your airway. Sleeping on your side could prevent this.Alcohol: alcohol slows the brain’s responses, causing the muscles to relax even more than during a normal night’s sleep. The added relaxation of the musculature causes the oropharynx to collapse causing snoring. Furthermore alcohol may induce obstructive sleep apnoea (where breathing stops for short periods during sleep) in individuals who are otherwise just snorers. Additionally alcohol causes nasal airway irritation and congestion that increases the airway resistance when breathing. However if you are not heavily overweight and snore at all time, regardless of your alcohol consumption, your snoring could be caused by a stuffy nose, a blocked nose or an enlarged uvula, for which we offer three different treatments. They are:Unblocking the nose – Minimally invasive laser treatment under local anaesthetic can be used to treat the problem of a blocked nose in a matter of minutes. The treatment reduces enlarged fleshy ridges or ‘turbinates’ at the entrance of the sinuses. Please note it cannot correct a deviated septum. Please see our Rhinoplasty treatment page for more details about correcting a deviated septum. For more information click hereLaser Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) – This is a simple procedure that is performed under local anaesthetic and uses a laser to remodel the excess soft tissue that vibrates at the back of your throat. This frees your airways and increases oxygen supply, which not only prevents snoring*, but lifts the mood, increases energy levels and can even improve libido. LAUP is the most popular snoring treatment in the UK and over 40,000 procedures have been performed to date.Bipolar Radiofrequency Thermotherapy (RFITT) – This is a short, gentle treatment that uses a radio frequency to tighten the muscle within the soft palate so that it vibrates less during sleep. The procedure involves numbing the back of the throat with a local anaesthetic and targeting it with a slim pen that emits a high frequency. The heat causes the muscle to tighten both during and after the treatment. The maximum benefit is usually evident about 6 months after treatment.

  • What happens during Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) surgery?

    Laser-Assistant Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is a very effective procedure to reduce snoring. TheThe procedure involves using a laser to make inciisons on areas of your soft palate and your uvula is often removed. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is performed as a walk-in, walk-out procedure where patients can leave to recover at home straight afterwards.LAUP surgery can help to;

    • Decrease size of uvula
    • Lessen loudness of snoring
    • Reduce uvula vibration during breathing
    • Manage mild to moderate sleep apnoea

  • How much does Snoring treatment cost?

A consultation with our Ears Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon is £100. Free consultations are available with a Patient Coordinator if you just wish to get more information about the procedures we offer. Prices for our snoring treatments start from £1,980, depending on the type of treatment.

Excellent treatment guided by Dr.Nicholas Kalavrezos and the Anaesthesia Team led by Dr Martinez. It was mg first time under General A and I wasn’t too excited. From start to finish all the nurses were superb, the room was clean and my food was also yummy. Sometimes it pays to sort your Private Medical Insurance our. The surgery was booked in less than a week after my 2nd consultation. MRSA and Covid Test also were done prior. I can not recommend The Harley Street Clinic enough.Thank you everyone. Regards Monica

Had a FUE hair transplant on 16 December with Dr Furqan Raja.He and the two nurses he worked with were fantastic! They made me feel very comfortable throughout the procedure and constantly checked in with me. I had 1700 grafts taken from the back of my head and put into the front where I had gone bald either side of my windows peak.It took a bit longer than I thought (about 8.5 hours) but this was due to the high quality, attention to detail and best result they wanted to achieve for me.I had the procedure done at the Leeds clinic but could have chosen Manchester too. I travelled two hours there and back in one day.I am now following the after care information they gave me and also the full kit of products they provided (all included in the price) to help me make sure I look after the new grafts properly.I have follow up appointments with the nurse and access to an emergency on call nurse 24/7 if required. But so far, I have no pain and everything is exactly as described to me in advance of the procedure.I did a LOT of research online and found many of the other national FUE/FUT hair transplant clinics too sales driven and very pushy. Dr Furqan Raja and the team at the private clinic gave me time and space to decide on what was right for me, and importantly they never sold to me but just answered all my questions in a professional, caring and trustworthy manor. This is why I chose them and looking at the early results I am pleased I did!If you speak to other clinics and do your research, make sure you also book a consultation with The Private Clinic. Alex Clair in Manchester was my Patient Coordinator and he went out of his way to help me and gave me lots of free, practical and helpful information up front.Their straightforward, honest and friendly approach was great throughout. Highly recommended Dr Furqan Raja, Alex Clair and the whole team.

All of a sudden I noticed these veins under my eyes, it was soooo upsetting to see everyday! I didn’t think I could do anything about them. Until I googled and it came up with Harley street and they did removal of under eye veins. I rang the them up and they was so helpful! And from there I was booked in and was so happy to know I can get something done! Everytime I called up nothing was a problem and was always happy to talk to me and answer any questions I had. When it came to the day of the procedure, Marie was so calming and made me feel as relaxed as possible. It was a little uncomfortable but soooo worth it as the results are amazing! Very happy I chose Harley street for the this treatment! Thankyou so much!

I had treatment with Nurse Marie. She was so kind. The first treatment was rather painful and when I came in for my second round I was very nervous. Marie was so caring, she totally understood and took her time treating. Would definitely recommend.

Anti – aging treatments with Dr Santa Cruz are a must for me. I have been seeing her for about 3 years now at the Private Clinic of Harley Street. Very knowledgeable and takes before and after photos which have been incredibly helpful when we want to see how much of a difference the treatment has made. I would highly recommend her as her treatments are 100% effective and painless. Also I feel safe with the covid -safe measures they have in place.

Snoring solutions to help you sleep better

      April 21, 2015 by

      Tesco Living

If you’re one of the 41 per cent of the population making night-time noise – or a long-suffering bedfellow – here’s the advice you need to sleep soundly

From finding the cause to preventative measures – here are nuggets of helpful advice from the experts just in time for National Stop Snoring Week (20-25 April).

      Find the cause

Snoring is a sound made when the tissues of the upper airways vibrate as you sleep. “There are three main medical reasons behind snoring,” says Dr Yves Kamami, an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street. “A partially blocked nasal passage, an elongated and thick soft palate or a partially blocked airway behind the tongue.” While awake, we have the muscle tone required to keep the airways open, but this is lost as we relax into sleep. To find out which of the three is causing your snores, ask your GP for advice, or try the Interactive Snore Tests.

      Take a targeted approach

Once you know whether you are a nose/throat, palate or ‘combination’ snorer, you can target your symptoms more accurately. Throat snorers could try Nytol Anti-Snoring Throat Spray, which acts on the throat tissues to help keep them lubricated and reduce vibrations. Nose snorers might benefit from Breathe Right Nasal Strips – plasters worn on the nose to open the nasal passages for better breathing. “If over-the-counter remedies don’t help, your GP may refer you to an ENT specialist,” says Dr Kamami.

      Roll over

“If you’re prone to snoring, sleeping on your back is a bad idea,” says Dr Kamami. “If you’re fed up of being jabbed in the ribs throughout the night by your partner, try to sleep on your side. Sewing a small ball into the back of your pyjamas is a nifty trick to prevent yourself from rolling over.”

      Switch pillows

Bedding specialist Slumberdown has created an Anti-Snore Pillow to get you and your partner a better night’s kip. The hollow-fibre pillow features an S-shaped foam core that supports your head and neck in a better position and minimises snoring.

       Assess your diet

“You’re much more likely to snore if you’ve had a tipple before you go to bed,” says Dr Kamami. “Alcohol relaxes the muscles of your tongue, which can lead to the narrowing of the airways, ultimately resulting in snoring. Meanwhile, spicy food can cause acid reflux and a number of studies indicate this increases the likelihood of snoring.”

       Address lifestyle factors

Being overweight and a smoker are known risk factors for snoring. A concerted effort to deal with both will almost certainly mean a more peaceful sleep.

       Don’t discount allergies

Hay fever, asthma and dust mite or feather allergies can make snoring worse. Make sure you change your sheets regularly, use hypoallergenic pillows and duvets, and take antihistamines, if needed.

       Invest in a humidifier

“A humidifier can add warmth and moisture to the air so it can be a good addition to the bedroom to reduce dryness in the nose and throat and improve the airflow – which can sometimes help reduce snoring,” says Dr Kamami. It may be particularly useful if snoring is due to nasal congestion or allergies, as dry air makes it worse.
