While smoking and being overweight may increase your risk of a heart attack, scientists have flagged snoring as a not-so-silent killer.
A recent American study revealed that plain snorers (not those who suffer from Sleep Apnea) are more at risk of a heart attack than smokers or the obese. According to the research, snoring is more than just a nuisance, and could actually be the early sign of life-threatening health problems.
People who snore are more likely to suffer a stroke or a heart attack, because they are more likely to have thickening or abnormalities in the carotid artery (the artery that supplies the brain with oxygen) and those who snore are urged to seek medical advice.
Snoring expert, Dr Robert Deeb of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said his findings were worse than expected: “Snoring is more than a bedtime annoyance and it should not be ignored. Patients need to seek treatment in the same way they would if they had sleep apnoea, high blood pressure or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.”
