FUE procedure

What are Follicular Transfer Hair Transplants?

July 12, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

There are a number of reasons why a person may experience hair loss; this can range from genetics to illness.  The best course of action to take is to visit our specialist trichology team for a consultation which will enable them to get to the source of what is causing hair loss.

If it is decided that you are suitable for a hair transplant then you will be looking at proceeding with a FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplant from our team of esteemed, reputable and sought after hair restoration surgeons.

But what exactly is a Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplant?

Compared to other hair transplant procedures, FUE Hair Transplants are less invasive and have improved healing time as well as a higher rate of success.

If you have been recommended to go ahead with this treatment then you will most likely have healthy natural hair growth at either the back or side of your head, these will be your donor hairs.

You will start your treatment by having local anesthetic; we choose to work this way rather than using general anesthetic to eliminate the risk and downtime.

The treatment is performed under a high powered microscope using specially designed instruments which allows the surgeon to work with the utmost precision for natural-looking, undetectable results.

Once you are feeling numb your surgeon will use a specialised punch device to isolate individual follicles. The specialist tool ranges in diameter from 0.6mm – 0.9mm and is used to extract follicular units complete with necessary glands. This tool separates the surrounding tissue from the unit resulting in minimal trauma and a reduced risk of any detectable scarring.

The follicles are then carefully removed avoiding damage to the area. Small red dots are left behind and these scars heal within a few days with new hair growing back in weeks.

The extracted hairs are then harvested and prepared for treatment. The extracted grafts are placed under a microscope to assess their integrity and to sort them according the number of hairs they contain

The microsurgical needle then makes small incisions in the area of the scalp where the follicles are going to be implanted. The hairs that are transplanted into the balding areas as individual follicular units generally occur in 1-4 group formations, in order to look natural and demonstrable.

A natural hairline is created with the transacted hairs and they will begin to grow naturally within weeks. The length of your hair transplant procedure will rely on the amount of follicular unit grafts are transplanted. The transplanted hair will have re-grown fully approximately 12 months later.

You can then leave the clinic immediately after treatment. Healing takes approximately 5-7 days, after which point any redness or slight swelling in the treatment area will have subsided.

Our specialist hair transplant surgeons – Dr. Raghu Reddy and Dr Luca De Fazio in London Harley Street , Dr. Mark Tam in Leeds and Bristol, Dr. Michael Mouzakis in Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and Northampton and Mr Doraisami Mohan in Birmingham and Leeds offer the most advanced, minimally invasive Hair Transplant techniques available today – leaving no visible scarring or linear scar at the back of the head. You can wear your hair however you want after your procedure and get back to your daily life as quickly as possible with minimal fuss and discomfort.

We are one of the very few clinics able to offer unshaven procedures, and treat Afro-Caribbean hair loss, as well as eyebrows, beard and facial hair. In addition, due to the knowledge and precision of our team, we can utilise body hair in hair transplants if you have a lack of suitable donor hairs on your scalp.

Are you suitable for a Hair Transplant?

October 12, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Hair Transplants can have life-changing effects for those who are eligible candidates for the procedure, but unfortunately, not everyone who rings up asking for it is suitable.

Our goal here is to clarify who wouldn’t benefit from booking a Hair Transplant consultation and why, but first, we’re going to do a quick recap about what a Hair Transplant involves.

What is an FUE Hair Transplant?

We use the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method for Hair Transplants to move healthy hair follicles from a donor area (typically the back of the head) onto a bald area.

In order to get the whole follicle along with the required glands, an advanced punch device is used, which minimises tissue trauma as well as the risk of any visible linear scarring.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic so as to reduce downtime and leaves the patient with permanent, natural results.

Who is unsuitable for a Hair Transplant?

This might seem pretty obvious but patients with a full head of hair are not going to be suitable for Hair Transplants. Unless you’re suffering from Male or Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia) and are bald, or balding, with a visible scalp, then your time will be wasted on a Hair Transplant consultation.

Hair Loss Patterns

On the flipside, if you have poor donor areas then there’s also not much we can do. This is something a specialist will be able to advise you on because even though hair from the back of the head is usually used, our expertise enables us to use body hair when applicable.

Issues can also arise if you’re losing hair at a sporadic rate since people with unstable hair loss will have to go through a period of stabilisation. With medication, it normally takes between six to nine months for your hair to reach a stage where none of it is lost or gained and an apparent pattern is once again discernable.

Another thing to keep in mind when considering a Hair Transplant is that you have to manage your expectations. Sometimes it so happens that either because of the reasons mentioned above or because someone’s expectations can’t be achieved, they will not be eligible for the procedure. You won’t be able to lower your hairline, nor should you expect to have a full head hair if your donor area is limited.

Before, During, After Hair Transplantation The private clinic results FUE 2
Different stages of a FUE Hair Transplant at The Private Clinic.

Finally, let’s reiterate, only patients who have experienced hair loss and/or degrees of balding are suitable for Hair Transplants.

Don’t despair quite yet – if you fit into any of the above categories but are still worried about hair loss, you have more options.

I am unsuitable for a transplant… what happens now?

Just because you can’t have a Hair Transplant doesn’t mean that you’re left without options. If you’re in the initial stages of hair loss and your scalp isn’t exposed yet, then you can visit one of our highly reputable Trichologists. They specialise in scalp and hair health and should be your first point of contact for any kind of hair-related concerns.

If you’re in the first or second stage of the Norwood Hair Loss Scale, a Trichologist will go through a thorough analysis of your lifestyle, diet and medical history to pinpoint the cause of your hair loss and will then be able to suggest an appropriate form of treatment.

The same goes for those who have forms of Alopecia other than the Androgenic kind. A Trichologist will be able to establish the kind of Alopecia you do have and will know what products, medication or alternative treatments will be best suited for your scalp and hair.

FUE Hair Transplant Pricing

April 2, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

We understand that the price of any cosmetic or aesthetic treatment plays a substantial role in the consideration process for anyone wanting a hair transplant.

While you should always pay attention to the pricing structures offered to you for a hair transplant, you need to always keep that factor secondary to the quality of care and the results offered by a clinic or surgeon. This extends to their reputation, credentials and experience of both.

We are asked daily about pricing information regarding our various procedures and while we’re more than happy to give you an average price a patient pays, more accurate quotes can only be offered by the surgeon during a consultation after assessing your case and needs.

How much does a FUE Hair Transplant cost?

FUE Hair Transplant procedures at The Private Clinic cost on average; £2.50 per transplanted hair. For patients with a reasonable amount of hair loss, the procedure could cost on average £6,000-8,000. For more extensive procedures, the costs can increase considerably. If you would like an Unshaven (U-FUE) hair transplant, the cost increases further. Many procedures end up costing between £6,000-9,000. More extensive hair restoration procedures may be split into two procedures with a significant gap in between them.

The overall cost of a hair transplant procedure will be calculated by the time taken, amount of hairs transplanted and the difficulty of the procedure. Prices will also often reflect the quality of the procedure and the experience your surgeon may have and often what may appear to be a great deal may not end up being one if you are left with bad results and significant scarring. Here at The Private Clinic we unfortunately often see a lot of patients who require hair transplants to repair poor hair transplant results.

Expert Hair Transplant Surgeons at The Private Clinic

Once one of our hair transplant doctors, Dhave deemed you suitable for an FUE Hair Transplant you will then be informed as to how many grafts or hairs you’ll require to have transplanted. This will be based on the results that you are after and it is then that an accurate price for your procedure will be given.

And The Award Goes To… Celebrity Hair Transplants & Your Questions Answered

March 8, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Hair Transplants frequently crop up in the news, especially when a celebrity’s hair loss or surprising hair growth is called into question. A bevy of celebrities have sung hair transplant’s praises over the past few years, as they seek to enhance their careers and bolster their self-confidence.

Celebrity Hair Transplants

UK-based Celebrities that seem to have successfully undergone hair transplants include:

  • Wayne Rooney
  • Calum Best
  • Louie Walsh
  • Jason Gardiner
  • James Nesbitt
  • Gordon Ramsey
  • Rob Brydon

We get asked a lot of questions about hair transplants here at The Private Clinic so we decided to create a blog post to help you decide if this could be an option for you.

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant usually involves taking healthy, strong hair follicles and transplanting them to areas of thinning or balding. It can be performed on men and women for different reasons and requires considerable expertise so always check the surgeon’s credentials.

There are two major types of hair transplants. The FUE method takes individual hair follicles from a donor area (typically the back or sides of the head) to the ‘problem’ area, to tackle thinning or balding. A tiny, circular incision is made around each follicle, leaving very little or no scarring; these are not visible to the naked eye. The hair follicle is then prepared and implanted into the specified area, where it takes up to a year to fully establish itself. There is minimal downtime, it is performed under local anaesthetic and recovery is minimal.

The FUT method, in contrast, cuts a strip of skin and hair from the back or side of the head, where it is then dissected and implanted into the balding or thinning area. The FUT method leaves a linear scar at the donor site and requires a lengthy postoperative schedule and aftercare regime for the patient. Its advantage is that it’s typically cheaper and quicker to perform.

How long does it all take?

We offer the FUE method of hair transplants. For many patients, a day at our clinic is necessary; some patients require a second day of treatment for an extensive procedure. The FUT method is much quicker but requires hourly care for 2 days after the procedure and weeks of postoperative care.

Is it permanent?

Only strong, healthy hair follicles are harvested from the strongest, densest areas of hair. Some surgeons can transplant body hair so that is always a potential option. The surgeon’s expertise is especially important here. They need to discuss with you the results and help you manage your expectations.

I have Afro hair and I find it hard to find clinics that have the specialism?

Treating Afro hair requires specific experience and expertise. Ask the clinic for demonstrable experience. Here at The Private Clinic we’re one of a small number of clinics that can help Afro hair successfully.

How much does it cost?

Cost should not be the defining factor for any cosmetic treatment or procedure. Expertise requires constant topping up of skills and knowledge, which is why this is reflected in the prices at some clinics. Hair transplants are typically priced per hair transplanted so the price varies considerably. As a rough guide, we offer full hair transplants for men from £7,500.

Additionally, there is minimal downtime with the FUE method so you can return to work quickly, without losing out on wages as well.

Is it painful?

You can read our testimonials on our website for real-life accounts of having the procedure done. From our experience, patients are usually happily chatting during the procedure. The FUT method is reported to be more painful as patients have been sutured and the skin needs time to heal. The procedure is also performed under general anaesthetic.

Is there anything else apart from a hair transplant that will work?

There is nothing to regain areas of lost hair at the moment but you can use products to stop any further hair loss. At our clinic we also specialise in nonsurgical hair loss treatments.

Ask Dr. Kouremada Zioga: Live Twitter Hair Transplant Q&A

November 21, 2012 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Earlier this week we hosted a live Twitter Q&A session with our Hair Transplant surgeon, on all things hair transplant related.

During the hour-long session, our followers, from across social channels, sent in their hair loss, balding, hair transplant and treatment questions. Our #AskDr topic was trending, thanks to the amount of hair loss and hair transplant information exchanged during our session.

Dr. is a highly experienced surgeon, having performed over 2,000 hair transplant procedures to date, for both men and women. She is one of the few doctors able to carry our hair restoration treatments for patients with afro-Caribbean hair. She is also specialised in reparative procedures, treating scars caused by the traditional Strip procedure, or FUT.

For those who missed the Twitter session, we have included the full transcript below.

Please note: There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution when it comes to hair loss and hair transplants. Every patient is assessed individually when they visit us at the Clinic. Dr Kouremada Zioga’s answers below are a general guideline to hair loss and hair transplant procedures, however we will be able to offer a more concise analysis during a consultation.

Introductory Tweets

Hello there, it’s Dr @thomykouremada here. I will be answering your hair related questions today for the next hour #AskDrZioga

If you have a question, tweet in using the hashtag #AskDrZioga and I will be happy to help. Thanks!

Questions:

Ok, here is the first question… #AskDrZioga

[email protected] asks: After seeing pictures of Wayne Rooney’s transplant, I was wondering if it hurt? #AskDrZioga

A: No @PRinLondon, the transplant is pain-free. There are a few additional techniques that I… #AskDrZioga

A:…have perfected to ensure that it is as painless as possible #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected] asks: You know when you have a hair transplant, is it a one off? #AskDrZioga

A: It depends if the hair loss is stable or not, the density the patient wants to achieve and the size of the area treated. #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected] asks: I have curly hair, if I got a transplant, can I curl the hair? #AskDrZioga

A: As it is your own hair implanted into the problem area, it will grow the same as your pre-existing hair #AskDrZioga

—

Saragi on Facebook asks: could I have a hair transplant without taking finasteride before? #AskDrZioga

A: I prescribe Finesteride only when necessary to prevent further hair loss #AskDrZioga

A: It is possible to have a transplant without taking Finasteride prior to the procedure #AskDrZioga

—

Andy by email asks: How long does it take for a hair transplant to look like my hair? #AskDrZioga

A: For final hair growth, you will need to wait approx. 1 year. From the time of the procedure implanted hair will look natural #AskDrZioga

—

Fifi asks: I’ve read it’s normal to lose hair after pregnancy…13 months after and I’m still losing lots… #AskDrZioga

Fifi: …I’ve got regrowth coming but it’s still huge amounts coming out when I wash my hair or brush it! #AskDrZioga

Fifi: …When will it stop and do you seek treatments? #AskDrZioga

A: Many women suffer hair loss after pregnancy, most of the time it has to do with other factors (not permanent) such as…#AskDrZioga

A:..stress or anaemia. I advise that you get your blood tested for anaemia and iron deficiency etc #AskDrZioga

A:… if blood tests are ok, why not come and visit us for a consultation? #AskDrZioga

—

DD by email: After a hair transplant, will my hair look like it used to? How long until I see results? #AskDrZioga

A: You will see full results in a year. The hairline will look 100% natural and will suit your age progressions. #AskDrZioga

—

We are now half way through the Q&A, if you have a hair related question, let us know! #AskDrZioga

—

.CareForYourHair: What have you found the most common cause of hair loss among women? Especially those that are Afro-Caribbean? #AskDrZioga

A: The most common cause is traction alopecia in women with afro-carribean hair. The way that they style their hair weaves.. #AskDrZioga

A:…cornrows, braids etc, pulls on the hair and can lead to permanent hair loss #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected] Are there any words of advice to avoid hair loss before it gets to the serious stage of needing a transplant? #AskDrZioga

A: To slow the rate of hair loss, I advise you use minoxidill and/or Finasteride, 1mg per day (only for men)… #AskDrZioga

A:…Please consult with your doctor first #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected] asks: Can anyone get a transplant or is there a criteria? #AskDrZioga

A: It depends mainly on the donor area, in some cases we can use body hair… #AskDrZioga

A:…Every patient is treated on a case by case basis. Not everyone is a good candidate. #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected] asks: How long do the transplants take? #AskDrZioga

A: The length of a transplant depends on the number of hairs required. Typically my procedures last 2-6 hours per day. #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected] asks: Are there any side effects? How traumatic is this procedure on the rest of the body? #AskDrZioga

A:Side effects: Light swelling, bruising, infection etc, is very rare for my procedures. It is a minimally invasive procedure… #AskDrZioga

A:..My procedure micro-FUE is a minimally invasive procedure, with no down time or required recovery time #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected] asks: Are the results consistent over different ethnicities and hair types? #AskDrZioga

A: The result will mainly depend on the person and not the type of hair #AskDrZioga

—

Laura on Facebook asks: How do you get your hair to grow long? #AskDrZioga

A: Each person has their own rate of hair growth. Vitamin E helps and it is very important to use a good chemical free shampoo #AskDrZioga

—

[email protected]__blog: are double hair whorls on the crown an early sign of hair loss/thinning? #AskDrZioga

A: No it is not a sign #AskDrZioga

Understanding Hair Loss Medication – Propecia and Minoxidil

November 5, 2012 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Hair loss is a daunting topic for many people and can often be the cause of deteriorating self-confidence. Genetic male hair loss, also known as Androgenic Alopecia, or male pattern baldness is one of the most common conditions treated by our Hair Transplant surgeons at The Private Clinic. After all, 1 in 3 experience male pattern baldness by the time they’re 30.

The Private Clinic: Understanding Hair Loss Medication

We offer suitable patients a course of medication, complementing FUE hair transplant surgical treatments, to ‘hold’ the thinning of hair and reduce the rate of future hair loss. The FUE method is far superior to the traditional strip technique, in terms of results, downtime and scarring (FUE leaves absolutely no scarring whatsoever). This has proven to be the optimal ‘offensive & defensive’ combat plan to cure male hair loss and balding. Most men come into the clinic after they’ve started balding, at which point it is impossible for medication to restore lost hair.

There are currently only 2 FDA approved hair loss prevention or stabilisation medications available for suitable hair loss and balding patients: Finasteride – an oral medication, commercially known as Propecia; and Minoxidil – a topical medication, commercially known as Regaine.

When used together, Finasteride and Minoxidil are known to have a complementary effect on a balding scalp. However, each drug has a different method of action, as well as different side effects. Before choosing a medication, it is always necessary to fully understand their differences, and how they will affect you.

Minoxidil is a topical medication, available over the counter in various forms (spray, drops, lotion, foam), and is used for treating hair loss for both men and women – 5% concentration mainly recommended for men, while the 2% concentration mainly for women. The exact mechanism by which Minoxidil treats hair loss is still unclear, but the drug is proven to increase the duration of the hair follicle growth cycle (Anagen) when applied directly to the scalp of the thinning areas. It improves the length and thickness of shrinking follicles and helps retain hair and slow the thinning process, but cannot be used on areas that are totally bald.

For Minoxidil to work efficiently, it must be used regularly and continuously. It is common to start shedding within the first 3-6 months of using Minoxidil, and stopping the medication will result in losing all of its benefits, although the treated areas will not be worse off than when treatment started.

Propecia, on the other hand, is a prescription medication which acts as a DHT hormone inhibitor and is only used for treating male pattern baldness at its early stages. Its mechanism works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – read more about DHT here. Within a few months of using Propecia, DHT levels will have constantly stayed low enough for hair loss to cease.

It has been seen that Propecia is a much more effective medication than Minoxidil alone, but does have a 1-3% chance of side effects, some of which include sexual performance abnormalities, decreased sex drive, anxiety and depression. Always consult with your doctor if you begin to experience anything out of the ordinary.

Because each of the drugs works differently and separately, the best results are achieved by combining use of the two medications, commonly known as the ‘dynamic duo’, and are far more effective when used as part of a hair loss treatment plan that includes hair transplant surgery. The medical treatments work to prevent further hair loss, while the surgery is used to regain the hair that has already been lost. A hair transplant is the only hair loss treatment that can permanently restore hair in a completely bald area.
