FUE Transplant

What are Follicular Transfer Hair Transplants?

July 12, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

There are a number of reasons why a person may experience hair loss; this can range from genetics to illness.  The best course of action to take is to visit our specialist trichology team for a consultation which will enable them to get to the source of what is causing hair loss.

If it is decided that you are suitable for a hair transplant then you will be looking at proceeding with a FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair Transplant from our team of esteemed, reputable and sought after hair restoration surgeons.

But what exactly is a Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplant?

Compared to other hair transplant procedures, FUE Hair Transplants are less invasive and have improved healing time as well as a higher rate of success.

If you have been recommended to go ahead with this treatment then you will most likely have healthy natural hair growth at either the back or side of your head, these will be your donor hairs.

You will start your treatment by having local anesthetic; we choose to work this way rather than using general anesthetic to eliminate the risk and downtime.

The treatment is performed under a high powered microscope using specially designed instruments which allows the surgeon to work with the utmost precision for natural-looking, undetectable results.

Once you are feeling numb your surgeon will use a specialised punch device to isolate individual follicles. The specialist tool ranges in diameter from 0.6mm – 0.9mm and is used to extract follicular units complete with necessary glands. This tool separates the surrounding tissue from the unit resulting in minimal trauma and a reduced risk of any detectable scarring.

The follicles are then carefully removed avoiding damage to the area. Small red dots are left behind and these scars heal within a few days with new hair growing back in weeks.

The extracted hairs are then harvested and prepared for treatment. The extracted grafts are placed under a microscope to assess their integrity and to sort them according the number of hairs they contain

The microsurgical needle then makes small incisions in the area of the scalp where the follicles are going to be implanted. The hairs that are transplanted into the balding areas as individual follicular units generally occur in 1-4 group formations, in order to look natural and demonstrable.

A natural hairline is created with the transacted hairs and they will begin to grow naturally within weeks. The length of your hair transplant procedure will rely on the amount of follicular unit grafts are transplanted. The transplanted hair will have re-grown fully approximately 12 months later.

You can then leave the clinic immediately after treatment. Healing takes approximately 5-7 days, after which point any redness or slight swelling in the treatment area will have subsided.

Our specialist hair transplant surgeons – Dr. Raghu Reddy and Dr Luca De Fazio in London Harley Street , Dr. Mark Tam in Leeds and Bristol, Dr. Michael Mouzakis in Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and Northampton and Mr Doraisami Mohan in Birmingham and Leeds offer the most advanced, minimally invasive Hair Transplant techniques available today – leaving no visible scarring or linear scar at the back of the head. You can wear your hair however you want after your procedure and get back to your daily life as quickly as possible with minimal fuss and discomfort.

We are one of the very few clinics able to offer unshaven procedures, and treat Afro-Caribbean hair loss, as well as eyebrows, beard and facial hair. In addition, due to the knowledge and precision of our team, we can utilise body hair in hair transplants if you have a lack of suitable donor hairs on your scalp.

The cost of Hair Restoration

January 30, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

It can be rather scary when your hair starts thinning and even more so if it escalates into full-blown Hair Loss.

The good thing is that you no longer have to just sit there and accept your fate. Medical advances have made it possible to restore thinning hair, while surgical breakthroughs allow for individual hairs to be transplanted from one area to the next, without having to remove slivers of your scalp (as required by the now archaic strip hair transplant method).

private_clinic_male_added_bleed

All in all, we’d say that the future looks bright for those of you worried about Hair Loss, which is why we’ve compiled a helpful guide that goes through your treatment options and their cost.

Trichology

Unless you have bald patches and a clearly receding hairline, you might not yet be at a stage where you need a Hair Transplant. That’s good news!

Your hair might just be thinning, which means that with the correct treatment it can be restored. A Trichologist will go over all the different factors that might affect your hair health and thoroughly inspect your hair and scalp, to diagnose what’s causing your hair to thin. It’s important to establish that whether any underlying conditions such as an iron deficiency, or a B12 vitamin deficiency, are at the root of your problem.

The price for a full one-hour consultation ranges between £127 to £197, and will enable you to find out what’s ailing you exactly and how to treat it, as well as identifying if you might actually benefit from a Hair Transplant.

Hair Transplant

Our surgeons all use the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to move healthy individual hairs from the back of your head to your balding areas.

The procedure doesn’t cost a set amount of money because it all depends on how many hairs are used during the treatment. We charge approximately £2.50 per transplanted hair, but you can expect to be given an accurate quote during a consultation with one of our Hair Transplant Specialists. That being said, the average bare minimum our patients can expect to pay is around £8,000.

Alternatively, you can attend a consultation with one of our sought-after Hair Transplant Surgeons for £100.

Eyebrow and Beard Transplants

Thin eyebrows can be a result of genetics, a form of Hair Loss or over-plucking, and the same is true with beards – perhaps minus the plucking. It’s essential to see a Dermatologist – which costs £200 – in order to establish your suitability for an Eyebrow or Beard Transplant, because underlying conditions may cause the procedure to fail, and it’s better for you to know in advance so that you don’t end up wasting your money.

An Eyebrow Transplant typically costs approximately £5,000 and includes an optional touch-up if down the line you feel that a small area requires more work.

beard transplants - FUE
Beard Hair Transplants are specialist procedures that require a high level of skills.

Beard Transplants require a specific skill set and are more difficult and time-consuming than standard Hair Transplants. The skin of the lower face is different to that of the scalp and as a result, cannot withstand sustained implantation at the same rate as the scalp. The different approach required for this procedure means that we charge about £5 per transplanted hair and our patients can typically expect the procedure to cost between £6,000 and £8,000.

Please note…

… that the prices mentioned here aren’t set and can slightly differ depending on your choice of surgeon and your individual circumstances. We assess patients on a case-by-case basis and take into account their personal requirements, desired results, and the complexity of their case.

Hair Trichologist vs. Hair Transplant Specialist

September 11, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

It’s said that hair is a woman’s vanity – but the confidence of both men and women can be rattled equally when faced with hair loss. When it comes to our mops, hair loss, or Alopecia, is often the most likely trigger to make our alarm bells go off. The thing is, a number of factors can be responsible, and while some of them will be genetic, others may not be.

You could choose to consult a GP but why not see the people with the relevant know-how, who in these cases, are going to be trichologists and hair transplant experts. Each specialty serves different purposes so we wanted to clarify what each has to offer.

hair 6crop

Trichology or Hair Transplant?

Trichology is the study of the health of hair and the scalp. You go to see a Trichologist to diagnose and treat your hair-related problems. They are experts in all things hair and scalp, and their aim is to reach an understanding of all the different factors that can affect the health of your hair and scalp.

A trichologist will want to understand your lifestyle, diet, family history and medical conditions, to assess how these factors could be influencing the condition of your hair. They are able to advise you on texture, hair thinning or hair loss, scalp problems such as dandruff, to more serious conditions like Psoriasis or Pityriasis Amiantacea (when a group of scalp hairs is surrounded by sticky and thick scale).

Men – Male Hair Loss

Male hair loss is a gradual process, yet it can affect a man’s confidence just as it can a woman’s.

Men generally tend to associate hair loss solutions to hair transplants. It’s important to keep in mind that if you rank between levels one and two on the Norwood Hair Loss Scale, then a Trichologist may be able to help you treat the condition or prevent further hair loss. Hair transplants are solutions for hair restoration in areas where there are balding or existing bald patches.

Norwood Scale The Private Clinic Hair Loss

Women – Female Hair Loss

Things get a bit more complicated with women – mostly because their bodies are on what seems like a never-ending, hormonal, roller-coaster ride. Hormones will particularly go through changes following pregnancy, menopause, through the use of contraceptive pills or if suffering from Anaemia. Let’s not forget the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, which is similar to a game of roulette in that you never know how it will affect you personally. With some women it increases unwanted hair growth, while with others it may be a contributing factor to hair loss.

Women who experience any sort of initial hair thinning or falling hair should start by arranging a consultation with a Trichologist. Once the cause is found, the Trichologist can move on to suggesting a form of treatment, be it products (shampoos, topical foams) or supplements.

A Hair Transplant is usually only an option for women who experience male pattern baldness, have some sort of patchy alopecia, or for those who would like to lower their hairline.

Hair Loss Patterns

More importantly, the sooner you get diagnosed by an experienced Trichologist, the better the opportunity to find a suitable treatment. If the Trichologist finds that you may need a restorative treatment, they will refer you on to one of our esteemed and highly reputable Hair Transplant experts.

Hair Loss DNA Test

Our hair loss DNA test is ideal for patients who are experiencing hair loss and would like to know what the cause is. The Fagron TrichoTest takes an oral swab sample from the patient along with a detailed questionnaire about their health and lifestyle and presents a list of possible causes of hair loss. Being able to detect the early signs of hair loss is important to be able to maintain and protect the existing hair follicles. Using the results of the TrichoTest, our hair loss experts will be able to create a personalised treatment plan is going to help give you the best results by choosing the best and most effective treatments.

Calum Best to undergo third hair transplant procedure

October 14, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

He’s perhaps best known to most for his iconic bachelor lifestyle, but over the past few years Calum Best has earned a name for himself in another way – an honest admission of his struggle with hair loss.

Calum Best before his first hair transplant and recently with his new hairline.
Calum Best before his first hair transplant and recently with his new hairline.

Son of footballer George Best, the 33 year old model and actor began losing his hair at the age of 23 and has since undergone two procedures to transplant a total of 2,228 individual hairs to his receding hairline. Now, he admits, he is preparing for a third procedure.

Talking about his relationship with hair restoration and why he is going for the triple–transplant, Best said “these procedures have completely changed my life. They have given me so much more confidence and enabled me to wear my hair just the way I like.” And the actor is one of a long line of celebrities to admit hair restoration surgery: “stars like Rooney and James Nesbitt have made a big difference. They’ve been very open about what they have had done and most men just say ‘good on them.’ And most women say ‘don’t they look better.’“

Multiple hair transplants are not uncommon and certainly don’t mean the original procedure was unsuccessful. While a treatment can restore hair that has been lost, it cannot prevent new thinning occurring in other areas. During consultation your hair restoration surgeon should work with you to discuss whether they believe a singular transplant will be beneficial to you in the long run and, while we can never fully predict the likelihood of you needing another transplant, what they consider the risk to be.

At The Private Clinic we have some of the most sought-after hair surgeons in Europe who focus on only the most minimally-invasive, pioneering treatments which is why we work exclusively with a method of hair restoration called FUE, Follicular Unit Extraction. In the procedure individual follicles are extracted from donor areas where hair is in abundance and transplanted into the thinning parts of the scalp. The method works on a highly intricate level, meaning that under the right surgeon it leaves no linear scarring, and recovery times are far quicker than older methods of transplantation.

“The fact that I still have my hair helps me to get film roles” says Best and, while hair transplantation might not be able to get most of us a leading part in a Hollywood blockbuster, it can help build confidence and boost the esteem of those who are down about their changing hairline.

If you’re experiencing hair loss and would like to talk to someone, visit our site or book a consultation with our team. Hair restoration surgery is available in our London and Leeds clinics, with consultations available at various bases across the country.

Hair loss and transplantation for Afro-Caribbean hair

October 7, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

There was a lot of buzz about last week’s Champions League match between Roma and Cagliari. But perhaps not for the reason, you’d expect. Gervais Yao Kouassi, or as he’s better known to most Gervinho, proved many of his critics wrong by boasting some impressive playing, but no amount of skill could distract from the real talking point; his hair.

The Roma forward’s locks have been a something of interest to many for a long time but, after his famous hair band accidentally came off mid-game during the match, the true extent of his hair loss was shown, provoking a wealth of comments on social media and a score of eager eyes keen to see his hairline again.

Gervinho's hairline has been a talking point for a while.
Gervinho’s fading hairline has been a talking point for a while.

Treating Afro-Caribbean hair like Gervinho’s is notoriously difficult. Very few clinics offer hair transplants, and there are very few experts worldwide who practice any form of Afro hair restoration. This is because the roots of Afro-Caribbean hair are curly, which makes extracting  for transplantation a highly skilled art that few have relevant experience in. Donor strands can often be destroyed during extraction, or the hair can be simply too curly for successful transplantation. Because Afro-Caribbean hair tends to have a much lower density than Caucasian hair, the technical skill required too needs to be meticulously precise.

Hair Transplant Surgery at The Private Clinic

At The Private Clinic we work exclusively with a method of hair transplantation called FUE, Follicular Unit Extraction. In the treatment, individual strands of hair are extracted from donor areas, normally toward the back of the head,  before they are transplanted into the sparsely covered areas. We are one of very few clinics able to perform the treatment on Afro-Caribbean hair, owing to our highly qualified medical team, and we will never go ahead with a procedure that we don’t believe will give the results the recipient is expecting.

Hair restoration surgery helps thousands of people rediscover confidence, but it isn’t always suitable for everyone. As long as you trust your surgeon and are sure in their experience, they can help you achieve realistic goals and better understand the nature of your hair loss.

The Private Clinic prides itself on ensuring you have the best quality and most comprehensive care:

  • 24 hour patient helpline to ensure you are always in the best of hands.
  • As many post-operative care and appointments with your Hair Transplant surgeon and nursing team as required.
  • Highly experienced Hair Transplant Surgeons who have many years of experience.

FUE Hair Transplant Pricing

April 2, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

We understand that the price of any cosmetic or aesthetic treatment plays a substantial role in the consideration process for anyone wanting a hair transplant.

While you should always pay attention to the pricing structures offered to you for a hair transplant, you need to always keep that factor secondary to the quality of care and the results offered by a clinic or surgeon. This extends to their reputation, credentials and experience of both.

We are asked daily about pricing information regarding our various procedures and while we’re more than happy to give you an average price a patient pays, more accurate quotes can only be offered by the surgeon during a consultation after assessing your case and needs.

How much does a FUE Hair Transplant cost?

FUE Hair Transplant procedures at The Private Clinic cost on average; £2.50 per transplanted hair. For patients with a reasonable amount of hair loss, the procedure could cost on average £6,000-8,000. For more extensive procedures, the costs can increase considerably. If you would like an Unshaven (U-FUE) hair transplant, the cost increases further. Many procedures end up costing between £6,000-9,000. More extensive hair restoration procedures may be split into two procedures with a significant gap in between them.

The overall cost of a hair transplant procedure will be calculated by the time taken, amount of hairs transplanted and the difficulty of the procedure. Prices will also often reflect the quality of the procedure and the experience your surgeon may have and often what may appear to be a great deal may not end up being one if you are left with bad results and significant scarring. Here at The Private Clinic we unfortunately often see a lot of patients who require hair transplants to repair poor hair transplant results.

Expert Hair Transplant Surgeons at The Private Clinic

Once one of our hair transplant doctors, Dhave deemed you suitable for an FUE Hair Transplant you will then be informed as to how many grafts or hairs you’ll require to have transplanted. This will be based on the results that you are after and it is then that an accurate price for your procedure will be given.
