Skin tone and texture: How to rejuvenate your face

August 20, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Our faces can seem worn and aged when our skin takes on a different tone or, when its texture is made uneven or harsh because of scarring or pitting, and can seriously undermine our self-confidence.

Luckily there is a multitude of procedures aimed at evening out skin tone and texture so you’re definitely spoiled for choice.

Chemical peels

chemical peel skin take off

There are two key kinds of peels available: superficial and medium ones, both of which involve an exfoliating process that uses chemical products to remove dead cells on the surface of the skin as they make the skin appear dull and lacking in radiance.

Superficial peels are light and mild, often requiring about four courses to effectively remove the outer layer of dead cells and deal with fine lines, sun damage, moderate acne scars, areas of dryness and uneven pigmentation.

On the other hand, medium peels – also known as TCA skin peels because of their trichloroacetic acid content – penetrate further into the skin and can address a higher degree of the above mentioned issues.

The treatment itself lasts half an hour during which your skin is thoroughly cleansed, after which the chemical solution is carefully applied to be left on the skin for a few minutes and finally removed.

With the superficial peel some initial reddening can appear but with most people it tends to settle in a matter of hours but other than that there’s nothing stopping you from resuming your normal daily activities.

As for TCA peels, it is normal for the skin to tighten, darken and then peel over a period of five to seven days.

Whichever course ends up being best suited for you, chemical peels end up leaving your skin looking regenerated, healthier, softer and more uniform in colour.

Microdermabrasion

microdermabrasion micro crystals

It’s a bit of a mouthful but microdermabrasion is an excellent treatment for imperfect skin that just needs a bit of a kick.

Once again the process revolves around ridding the face of dead skin cells and it involves the topmost surface of the skin being vacuumed with a jet of micro-crystals to improve the appearance of brown spots, shallow acne scars, sun damaged skin, acne prone or blotchy skin, fine lines and enlarged pores.

This gentle procedure only last 20-30 minutes and should involve little or no discomfort.

Although the skin might get a bit red after the treatment, it should go back to normal in 24 hours and make-up can be applied immediately.

Full cell regeneration takes four to six weeks but straight away your skin will look younger, softer and more radiant meaning that it’s also a great treatment to get done just before a party or special event.

Dermaroller

dermaroller before and after
Before and after a Dermaroller treatment at The Private Clinic.

This treatment has some of the most impressively noticeable results considering its seeming simplicity and the extent to which it can improve skin severely damaged by acne scars, burn scars and hyper pigmentation.

The dermaroller is a hand-held medical roller with hundreds of micro needles arranged around it and as it is passed across the skin it causes small micro punctures in the skin surface that stimulates it to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely.

The controlled damage to the skin’s surface prompts a healing response without going deep enough to elicit a scarring response.

By breaking down the nearby tissue new collagen and elastin are formed, thus gently removing and replacing the scars, wrinkles and pigmentation.

To achieve the best results the depth of needling is assessed by the practitioner and can extend to 1.5mm on the face or 3mm on the body though depending on the state of your skin you might need a course of treatments.

It’s all relatively painless but anaesthetic cream is applied before starting the procedure to minimise any possible discomfort and depending on the area being treated the actual process lasts between 20-30 minutes.

You may be a little red for up to 24 hours after the dermaroller has had its way with you but you return to work immediately.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation

IPL Photorejuvenation machine and face model

Considered to be one of the most effective treatments for smoothing out skin tone, IPL courses can be customised for different skin tones and conditions, being particularly useful for treating superficial pigmentation and fine blood vessels.

During the procedure a machine is used to produce a broad spectrum of wave lengths that can help with dark skin discolouration, diffuse redness, reduce redness as well as addressing Rosacea.

Darker and Asian skin may be susceptible to burns so it is essential to get check the treatment is right for you and that it’s executed correctly.

There’s no downtime to worry about although the treated area should be kept well-moisturised and sun exposure should be avoided for 48 hours.

You can expect results to last between 12-18 months during which women have reportedly felt so confident that they were happy to go out with only moisturiser on.

Laser skin resurfacing

Before and After Pearl Fusion Laser Skin Resurfacing
Before and after Pearl Fusion laser skin resurfacing at The Private Clinic.

Unlike IPL, laser resurfacing works by using a heavily condensed high-energy beam which allows it to precisely address pigmentation, age spots, wrinkles, acne scars and sun damage.

However, laser treatments solve these problems to different degrees that come with varying downtimes, which is why getting a consultation with a healthcare professional to perform a thorough personal skin analysis is essential.

There are many lasers out there but at The Private Clinic we use Pearl, Pearl Fractional and Pearl Fusion.

The Pearl Laser is a targeted procedure meaning it works on your problem areas, leaving the rest of your skin untouched and although a course of 3-6 treatments will be necessary, once completed the results are permanent.

There are also three different Pearl Laser treatments;

During the standard Pearl treatment a practitioner guides the laser over the whole face

Pearl Fractional Laser Resurfacing penetrates deeper into the skin and is used to target specific areas of the face and deeper wrinkles but unlike its counterparts the heat is delivered in a ‘fractional’ way.

This means that the device splits the laser light into thousands of microscopic ‘columns’ of heat so that the targeted skin cells within them are destroyed but the surrounding tissues are left intact.

This way even though the practitioner passes the laser over the whole face, they are actually treating only 20%- 30% of the skin, allowing it to heal much more quickly.

Finally there’s Pearl Fusion which combines the previous two procedures.

Pearl is used first to improve the whole texture of the face and then Pearl Fractional is used to target deeper wrinkles.

It takes five to eight days to reach full recovery during which the skin should be kept away from the sun and well moisturised, with make-up application allowed starting on the third day.

Spider Vein or Varicose Vein: What’s the difference?

May 22, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

While neither is particularly popular and the two are often confused, Varicose Veins and Spider Veins are two entirely different leg problems that need to be addressed in varying, case-dependent, ways.

The Treatment needed will always depend on what, exactly, you’re suffering from and how deep-rooted the problem is. Varicose veins are a medical issue and always need to be addressed by an experienced surgeon to make sure they are rid of effectively. Very fine or light spider veins are usually just cosmetic and can often be addressed by a specialist therapist with lighter treatments. Regardless, however, you always need to work with professionals who know what to look out for.

It can be difficult to know where to start in treating problem veins so, first things first, how can you tell the difference?

Spider Veins

Spider veins what do they look like

  • Less than 1mm in diamenter.
  • Superficial
  • Flat
  • Often purple/red in colour

Spider veins/thread veins are a common problem, occurring in roughly 15% of men and 25% of women. They are small, thread-like purple or red lines with a maximum diameter of around 1mm that rest very near the surface of the skin, normally flat and very rarely protruding outwards or creating a bump.

They occur when blood vessels lose their elasticity and widen, sometimes caused by minor injury after bruising has healed or obesity, but often caused by genetics and hormones.

They can be found on the legs and face including veins under the eyes.

Varicose Veins

varicose vein what do they look like

  • Usually larger than 3mm in diameter
  • Normally involving a major vein of the leg
  • When near the surface, normally appear bumpy or bubbly
  • Often blue in colour

If spider veins are ‘thread-like’, varicose veins are more like a rope, often with a diameter of ¼ of an inch or more. They will sometimes grow from their original size and can be painful and itchy for sufferers, with throbbing and tired legs a common occurrence. In terms of appearance, varicose veins will normally be blue in colour and, when near the surface, can have a bumpy or bubbly look.

The damaged veins occur when one-way valves that transport blood around our body fail, and cause a ‘reflux’ of blood in the channel. Like spider veins, the biggest factor in a varicose vein occurring is genetics, but obesity and multiple pregnancies are also often attributed to the disease.

What are the treatment options for spider veins?

The treatment that is right for you will depend on multiple factors and your own unique case. Regardless, we always recommend speaking with a respected clinic to make sure serious problems aren’t missed, and to make sure that any treatment you go ahead with will be long-lasting and produce the results you’re after.

For thread and spider veins, depending where the vein is located, we often recommend either Sclereotherapy, Cutera CoolGlide or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment.

Cutera CoolGlide is normally used on smaller thread veins where needles are not appropriate such as the face. The non-invasive laser treatment involves the application of intense light directly at problem spider veins, causing the blood within them to coagulate and divert to deeper veins below the surface. The result is the disappearance of the characteristic lines and clearer, healthier looking legs.

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a chemical solution directly into problem veins to collapse them. Before performing the treatment, you will normally undergo a thorough ultrasound scan to ensure there are no underlying medical problems and that the veins won’t reoccur after removal. The results will be permanent but multiple treatment sessions may be required.

What are the treatment options for varicose veins?

Varicose vein treatment, meanwhile, is a more in-depth process. At The Private Clinic, your consultation with a surgeon will include a free ultrasound scan to make sure we understand what has caused your vein problem, so we can then treat it effectively. For smaller varicose foam sclerotherapy can be used, but our top choice for treatment is normally a laser method called EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation). The non-invasive method involves the application of laser energy directly into the problem vein to seal the faulty valve that caused the vein, and redirect blood flow to a fully functioning vein.

We also offer VenaSeal treatment for Varicose Veins which uses medical adhesive to close varicose veins. It is for patients who have a needle phobia as VenaSeal only requires a single injection per vein. Your surgeon will use an ultrasound to guide the small catheter through the affected veins. The VenaSeal tool then dispenses small amounts of medical grade Sapheon Glue that works to close the vein and once closed the vein will gradually be absorbed by the body.

We also offer Phlebectomy treatment for larger veins.

Why choose The Private Clinic for spider vein or varicose vein treatment?

50, 000 veins were treated in the UK in 2010 alone, however the treatment methods (and success rates) vary massively. This is why we work with only the most innovative treatments, all with the highest records of long-term results. Regardless of what type of vein you think you might have, we always recommend seeking help from a recognised, highly-regarded clinic; 30% of those with spider veins also suffer from varicose veins and, if not spotted, you may be at risk from requiring more treatment in the future. From our therapists for smaller veins to our Consultant Vascular Surgeons for EVLA, every member of our team has extensive experience and a huge wealth of knowledge. 10 Things You Should Know About Laser Hair Removal

August 27, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Laser Hair Removal is a very popular method of permanent hair reduction with women and increasingly with men. Shaving and waxing can take up so much of our time and end up costing a lot more than Laser Hair Removal so why not think about it? Here is our guide to 10 Things You Should Know About Laser Hair Removal to help you understand and decide if it’s right for you:

laser hair removal bikini body

1. Ask lots of questions, including ones about the machine and lasers used

Not every clinic uses the same machine and laser to treat your skin. There are different machines available with varying capabilities. Common machines include Cynosure Elite, Lightsheer Diode and Cutera Coolglide. There are also a number of different lasers available, including alexandrite and Nd:YAG, which have different wavelengths suitable for different types of skin and hair. Make sure you ask your clinic all about your options.

Some clinics, med-spas and beauty salons don’t even use lasers for hair removal treatments, they use intense pulse light (IPL) which is far less effective at getting rid of unwanted hair. See our IPL vs. Laser Hair Removal article for more information.

2. Go to an experienced and qualified practitioner

Here at The Private Clinic we have a team of trained laser therapists and medical staff on hand to carry out and assist with our treatments and procedures. While at beauty salons and other non-medical places there may not be the wider expertise required if something were to go wrong, potentially leaving you vulnerable. We have extremely high standards of patient care,  meaning we work with you to deliver the right results safely.

3. If you have darker skin, ask lots of questions

Make sure your practitioner is experienced in offering laser hair removal to darker skin types. Dark skin requires considerably more knowledge and care. It’s important to make sure you’re comfortable with your practitioner. A good practitioner will tell you what is suitable and what isn’t.

4. Make sure you get a patch test

It comes as standard for a reason in most clinics. Beware of anywhere willing to forego a patch test. It is an important way to determine your suitability.

5. Avoid tanning before a treatment and soon after

It is inadvisable to attempt laser hair removal on tanned skin. Additionally, you should avoid sun exposure as much as possible for 24 hours after a treatment – making sure you wear sunblock if going outside. It’s important to wear sunscreen everyday and even more important to wear it after laser hair removal.

6. Laser Hair Removal is permanent hair reduction

Laser hair removal is an effective way to permanently reduce hair growth. It works by disrupting the function of the hair follicle. The hair follicle still exists post-treatment but is not able to grow hair if targeted during its growth phase. Electrolysis is the only approved method of permanent hair removal but it takes a very long time and is not popular. A top up laser hair removal treatment every few years is typically recommended to maintain the desired result.

7. Hair grows in stages

Laser Hair Removal works by targeting hair follicles in their active growing phase. Hairs that are in the other stages will not be affected by the laser. This is partly why a course of treatments is necessary and why top-up treatments are sometimes advisable every few years.

8. You can shave before a treatment

While it is not advisable to pluck hairs before a treatment and between treatments, you can shave. Our treatments use a grid system, which is a highly targeted way of treating the hairs. Lasers that target individual hairs are not as effective when covering areas of skin.

9. It doesn’t hurt that much

Lots of our staff have laser hair removal as it really is a great way to manage unwanted hair. We all liken it to a ping of a rubber band against the skin or a sharp flick of a finger. While it’s noticeable, it’s not too uncomfortable.

10. Laser Hair Removal doesn’t work on light, grey or red hairs

Unfortunately laser hair removal does not work on light, grey or red hairs because of the melanin in the skin.
