Best cosmetic doctors, Near Me

March 11, 2019 by Julia Morgan Leave a Comment

“The era of over-filled lips and dramatic cosmetic surgery procedures is passing, with patients looking for not just a subtler look and an alternative to invasive forms of cosmetic surgery… combined with people wanting to return to their day to day activities straight away, means we are expecting to see a huge rise in the “tweakment” (Dr. Hanson for Marie Claire Magazine).

“Tweakment” refers to any non-surgical procedure to rejuvenate and/or enhance certain features of the face.

At The Private Clinic, we work with world-class doctors and surgeons who are highly skilled and experienced in minimally-invasive and non-invasive aesthetic procedures. The Private Clinic is the cosmetic clinic that has performed the most cosmetic procedures in the UK, always aiming to achieve outstanding results.

The secret cosmetic procedures for men

July 31, 2017 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

There is often a common misconception that cosmetic procedures are only for women but there are actually a wide range of treatments that are very common for the male population to undergo. All it takes is a little bit of research and you are often dealt with a wide range of treatments and solutions for the concerns you are having. Here at The Private Clinic our priority is you, which is why we aim to offer the best range of treatments for both male and females to help you feel good.

Here is our list of some of the most common cosmetic procedures for men that you may have not even known existed.

Hair Transplant

Hair loss is such a common issue with men (more so than females) so it is surprising when some men have not even heard of, yet alone considered, a hair transplant. Many men assume a hair transplant means a large area of their scalp being removed which is more typical of a follicular unit transfer (FUT) procedure. We only use the follicular unit extraction method here which leaves very minimal signs that you have had anything done.

The FUE method instead extracts hair follicles one by one from your donor area and then carefully places them in the areas being treated. You will have slight redness and very small pin marks for a few days after the procedure but little to no scaring will be visible in the long-term.

We also have an option of different styles of FUE Hair Transplants, before your procedure you will be required to shave your hair which can be off-putting for many  but you may suitable for an unshaven FUE Hair transplant which does not require you to shave at all and instead extracts your donor hair at full length. Your hair is not however transplanted at full length; it is instead trimmed to the shorter length and then implanted the same as a standard FUE procedure.  You will still experience some redness but your existing longer hair will then be able to hide the evidence of a hair transplant taking place. In most cases we are able to do a partially shaven or ‘marine’ procedure meaning we only shave the back and sides, which fits nicely with the most popular haircut for men this year.

Male Chest Reduction

“Man boobs” are not generally something discussed amongst groups of male friends unless in jest, but with many men expressing their embarrassment around removing their top, going to the gym and swimming -I’m sure many would be pleased to know that there is something that can be done.

“Man boobs”, or gynaecomastia, as it is medically known, consist of the enlargement of the male breast tissue.  True gynaecomastia is not fat tissue; it is glandular tissue which is why exercise is very unlikely to make any change and in some cases can actually make it worse.

There are many ways to perform a male chest reduction, the post popular choice is vaser liposuction but for smaller areas micro liposuction may be ideal. These are both day case procedures and you will be able to return home afterwards. For larger areas then you may be recommended to have surgical liposuction which usually requires overnight stay.

Blepharoplasty

One of the biggest ageing factors for men is their eyes, hooded lids and puffy bags are common complaints for many men which unfortunately no amount of skin care will be able to reverse.

A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure for the eyes that either targets the upper, lower or entire eye area to lift or remove excess skin surrounding it to achieve a rejuvenated youthful appearance.

A simple upper blepharoplasty is a short 30 minute procedure that can also be performed under local anaesthetic. A lower blepharoplasty is a little more complex and requires you to be under general anaesthetic and can take between 1-2 hours. Both operations are performed as day case procedures however meaning that you will not need to have an overnight stay.

Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating is often reserved for someone who is feeling nervous and scared or someone who has had a good session in the gym but for some of us it is an everyday occurrence that is becoming a huge inconvenience especially in warmer weather.

Hyperhidrosis is actually a medical term for excessive sweating and it can occur anywhere from the armpits to your hands and feet. What many don’t know is that there are actually some treatments that can help reduce the sweating.

Botulinum toxin can actually be injected into the skin in areas where excessive sweating occurs. The most popular place to inject is the armpits. The substance works to block the signals that run between the brain and sweat glands to stop sweating.  It does involve around 15+ injections in the areas being treated but this quick 30 minute procedure can be a saving grace for sufferers.

Hi-Definition Vaser Liposuction

The gyms are becoming busier places these days with more of us spending the time working on achieving our dream bodies but for some, the work just may not feel like it’s paying off. Stubborn areas of fat are common issues and especially when you are taking the time to eat right and exercise regularly it can be very frustrated and disheartening.

Alongside Vaser Liposuction, which is one of the most popular minimally-invasive liposuction procedures aimed at removing excess fat – we also offer a Vaser Hi-Def which goes a stage further and not only reduces the fat, but also tones it creating an athletic, sculpted appearance which is a popular choice for many men.

The procedure works by removing both superficial and deep fat that surrounds muscle groups when then enhances the appearance of the muscles and the surgeon is then able to sculpt and define the underlying muscles through a gentle suction process. The treatment is often used to create an athletic six pack, defined upper arms and strong looking pectorals.

Varicose Vein Treatment

It is incredible what an unsightly vein can do to someone’s confidence, including even the most outgoing of men.

Varicose veins are most commonly found on the legs and are easily diagnosed by their lumpy or twisted appearance.

Traditionally the treatment for veins like these was a surgical stripping method which understandably many of us were keen to avoid due to the downtime. New methods these days have made vein removal a much less painful experience with limited downtime too.

Our minimally invasive EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) procedure is increasingly popular with varicose vein sufferers. The procedure takes around 45 minutes and you are able to leave the clinic afterwards with minimal pain or discomfort returning to your usual activities (with some restrictions) relatively quickly. We also offer VenaSeal, foam sclereotherapy and phlebectomy procedures to remove varicose veins.

Hyperhidrosis treatment for a sweat-free summer

June 25, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Temperatures are finally starting to reflect the time of the year so it seems summer’s here at last. But for those who suffer from excessive sweating, the arrival of summer can be bad news.

Perspiration is common for the majority of us in the warmer months. You may find you are getting through more deodorant than usual, feeling thirstier (to replace those lost fluids), and need to wash our bodies, clothes and bedding more often.

Sweating is a natural reaction to regulating our core body temperature, and it is very effective at doing so too. But if you feel you are producing more (than what seems normal) amount of sweat it may be that you’re suffering from a condition called hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating, and although it doesn’t pose a serious health risk it can be embarrassing and frustrating for the sufferer.

What causes it?

Hyperhidrosis is believed to be caused by a problem with the sympathetic nervous system.

The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for much of the body’s unconscious jobs such as passing urine from the kidneys to the bladder. It’s also responsible for producing sweat – a system designed to help the body regulate its temperature.

When the brain fails to communicate when and how to regulate the production of sweat, this is when hyperhidrosis occurs.

Other causes include the menopause, an over-active thyroid, drunkenness or being ‘high’ from drugs and certain medications.

Can it be treated?

Excessive sweating is in fact treatable and if you suffer from it to the point that it’s ruining the enjoyment of your everyday life then treatment definitely should be considered.

Here at The Private Clinic we offer a proven Botox treatment that can banish excessive sweating for up to a year.

What’s involved in hyperhidrosis treatment?

You will have an initial consultation which will involve a practitioner talking you through the procedure and you will be asked about your medical history. You may require an iodine and starch test which will find out the areas where sweating is the most apparent

A topical local anaesthetic will then be applied to the areas that you want to be treated. 20 minutes later once the anaesthetic has had effect, a tiny amount of Botox solution will be injected into the skin using a very fine needle, targeting about 10-15 sites spaced about 1cm apart.

When does it take effect, and how long will it last?

You should notice that your sweating has reduced considerably within 3 to 7 days of treatment. The effects of the injection should last between 6 and 12 months. As soon as you notice a return to excessive sweating you can come back to us for more treatment.

Scott-hyperhidrosis-dr-simon-connelly-the-private-clinic

Previous patient and hyperhidrosis sufferer Scott came to us recently to discuss treatment. He led an active lifestyle and at the age of 32 he finally felt it was time to explore treatments that would rid him of the problem that was heavily impacting his life.

“Working in a mostly male environment it’s something that the boys often make fun of”

Dr Simon Connelly performed the injections on Scott, which only took around 30 minutes and 4 days later Scott started to feel the effects.  He had found inner confidence in not needing to worry anymore about excessive wet stains coming from his under arms.

“I will definitely continue to have this treatment. I am delighted with the results and I’m looking forward to my first holiday in a long time where I can buy whatever colour of shirt or t-shirt without trying to hide how much I am sweating!”

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) treatments for men and women: The Silent Handicap

March 15, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Unless you’re actively kicking up a sweat at the gym or taking part in a marathon, excessive sweating can make you feel uncomfortable and out of place.

Termed as the ‘Silent Handicap’ by Hyperhidrosis specialist, Dr Carl Swartling (2011), Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is a common condition that isn’t often discussed in social circles, with men and women often feeling too proud or embarrassed to consult their GPs. Those affected can become very self-conscious and may start avoiding certain colours and types of clothing, usually opting for white or black items, as they make transpiration less noticeable. Many also often think that there aren’t any solutions to improve upon it.

Excessive sweating can interfere with social, romantic and professional encounters for both genders and in certain severe cases, it can interfere with practical activities – such as holding a pen – if the amount of sweat prevents you from holding objects.

The signs and symptoms of Hyperhidrosis

If you feel that the amount of sweat you’re producing interferes with your everyday life and is making you become self-conscious and/or socially withdrawn, then you may be suffering from Hyperhidrosis. The condition is divided into two strands – primary and secondary.

The latter is rare and is usually caused by an underlying condition. Although it can manifest in any area, it may only affect one side of the body, or all of it, and is sometimes symptomatic of a neurological cause.

Visual scale for the quantification of Hyperhidrosis.
Visual scale for the quantification of Hyperhidrosis.

For most, Primary Hyperhidrosis is the right cause of concern, with usually one area being symmetrically affected. The underarms, palms, feet and face tend to be most affected. The cause of Hyperhidrosis is currently unknown, but researchers claim that a genetic link might be at play.

What research has definitely shown is that the condition isn’t a direct threat to your health – though it may lead to feelings of depression and anxiety, which in turn can worsen the condition.

Living with Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a long-term condition with no cure, but there are ways to manage it and to adapt to it effectively. You can start by trying to alter your lifestyle and avoiding spicy food, caffeinated or hot drinks, and alcohol, as they’re known to induce sweating. It’s helpful to note what triggers your episodes and reducing your exposure to them, and other stressful situations.

There are topical lotions and oral medication that can somewhat ease the condition, with some even relying on the use of electronic treatments, acupuncture and other alternative medicines to try and manage their sweating.

Treating Hyperhidrosis

In 2004, the FDA approved the use of Botulinum Toxin type A (commonly used for Wrinkle Relaxing Injections) for the treatment of excessive sweating. The substance works by temporarily blocking the nerves that encourage your sweat glands to become overactive.

The treatment is delivered by injecting small amounts of the toxin into to affected area, but whether it under the arms or the soles of the feet, the application of this treatment has to be exact, so it shouldn’t be performed by anyone who isn’t a medical practitioner.

Common skin treatments available at cosmetic clinics across the UK. First step should always be your GP so they can track and monitor your health. See below for a guide to common skin condition treatments:

Healthy Skin The Private Clinic

Acne

Lots of treatments available, including:

  • Isotretinoin (brand names include Roaccutane and Accutane) acne drug
  • N-Lite laser therapy (destroys bacteria that cause acne and promote new skin cell growth)
  • Antibiotics (evidence of growing resistance)
  • Light based therapy (non-laser treatments, light attempts to destroy bacteria behind acne)
  • Chemical Peels
  • Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. System

Alopecia Areata

This is a general term to describe patches of hair loss and differs from total hair loss and male pattern baldness. Treatments will vary between men and women as different hormones may be the cause of hair loss. Common treatments include:

  • Hair loss medication (minoxidil and finasteride)
  • Hair Transplants (FUE and FUT hair transplant methods available for scalp, eyebrow and facial hair transplants)
  • Hair therapy (you can use laser combs and helmets as well as non-medical massages)

Hirsutism

This is a term to refer to excessive hair growth in women. People with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are often affected. Common treatments can include:

  • Laser hair removal (permanent hair reduction)
  • Electrolysis (permanent hair removal)
  • Finasteride (hair loss medication commonly used for men can help with some specific cases)

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating. General hyperhidrosis is harder to treat but localised areas can be effectively treated.

  • Aluminium Chloride (often found in enough quantity in prescription antiperspirants but sore skin is a common side effect and requires frequent application)
  • Botox – the Botulinum toxin has a lot of cosmetic and medical uses. For excessive sweating it blocks the action of the nerves that activate the sweat glands if administered correctly

Keloids

When scars form they can sometimes continue to grow, forming raised bumpy scars. Keloid scars are more prevalent in darker skin types.

  • Steroid Injections can help to flatten early keloid scars
  • Surgical excision is the cutting out of the scar, must take careful precautions to avoid another one forming
  • Cryotherapy – freezing the area with liquid nitrogen can be effective in some cases

Melasma

Melasma, also known as ‘chloasma’ is a skin condition characterised by lighter, darker or grey patches of pigmentation, usually on the face. Most common in women with darker skin types who come from sunny climates.

  • Skin care products – specialised skin care products available from cosmetic clinics will be sensitive to skin conditions and help to improve the condition
  • Chemical peels can help to take away the darker pigmentation in the skin
  • Laser treatments, such as Laser Skin Resurfacing, can significantly reduce the darker pigmentation that forms with melasma
  • Cosmetic Camouflage will help to protect the skin and reduce the visibility of any pigmentation differences in the skin

Plantar Warts (Verrucas)

Warts (or verrucas) come in many forms and should be assessed medically before any treatment is confirmed so a consultation with a skin doctor is usually the best first step.

  • Warts can be removed by cryotherapy – liquid nitrogen is applied to the area, effectively freezing the infection
  • Electro-cauterisation – a specially designed rod with an electric tip is guided over the wart, burning it off and sealing the wound. It must be done carefully to avoid scarring and is usually more precise than cryotherapy but it is more expensive
  • Surgical excision – it is possible to slice the wart off
  • Salicylic acid can be applied to remove the wart – available in shops in low concentrations, cosmetic clinics can apply stronger concentrations

Rosacea

Rosacea is another common skin condition that affects many men and women in the UK. It is characterised by common or persistent redness to the face and sometimes the neck. It can lead to further complications if left untreated.

  • IPL (Intense Pulse Light) therapy can be used to treat dilated blood vessels and redness
  • Oral medications, like antibiotics and isotretinoin (famous acne drug with many uses)
  • Any damage to the eye or nose needs to be seen by a specialist

Botox in your 20s – is it a good or bad idea to have Botox before 30?

May 29, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

More and more people in their 20 are turning to Botox, as recent headlines attest. As a response, we’re getting a lot of questions about whether it is good or bad to have Botox before turning 30.

With the number of Botox procedures among 20-somethings rising 8% in 2012 to 92,955 from 2011 in the US, according to the 2012 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons – Botox looks set to rise in popularity with this seemingly image-conscious cohort.

There are lots of arguments out there and having Botox in your 20s is controversial but should it be completely avoided?

There are arguments for and against early Botox use.

We thought we would try and make it clearer in a blog post.

Botox Under 30 - Botox in your 20s - Good or Bad

Pros

Certainly there are individuals who benefit from Botox treatments in their 20s. If you suffer from excessive sweating (or hyperhidrosis), migraines and other relevant medical conditions, Botox could be an effective solution. Botox has been helping people for years, more recently it has helped a burns victim tackle painful itching associated with the damaged skin. Of course, some individuals will naturally have visible lines characteristic of someone much older that could benefit from Botox. A good chat with a medical professional will help you to better understand what you can do, safely and sustainably.

Cons

For lots of people Botox for cosmetic reasons in your 20s should be avoided. Botox works by temporarily paralysing the muscles that affect wrinkles and lines. Long-term paralysis will affect muscle function, which is why you need to work with an experienced and qualified medical practitioner to avoid some of the problems associated with its incorrect application and use.

Ensure you choose an experienced and well-qualified medical practitioner who has your best interests as their priority. A good practitioner will work with you to give you natural looking, long lasting results.

Choosing The Right Clinic

When used for cosmetic reasons it should be used sparingly in your 20s. Staying safe in the sun and a good skin care routine will often go a lot further in helping you fight off lines and wrinkles. There is a lot you can do to revitalise your skin in the meantime such as skin peels and IPL photorejuvenation. By taking good care of your skin in your 20s, it will make the effects of botox in your 30s and above a lot more beneficial.
