IPL Photorejuvenation

The Problem

IPL Skin Rejuvenation is one of the most effective treatments for smoothing out the tone and texture of your skin and can help in treating rosacea, age spots, sun damage/spots, and general skin tone irregularities.

A clear complexion is desired by many but it can be very difficult to achieve and maintain even with a set skincare regime.

What skin issues can IPL help to improve?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses IPL technology to help improve and reduce some of the most common skin complaints such as;

  • Brown Spots
  • Melasma
  • Age Spots / Sun Spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Broken Capillaries
  • Rosacea
  • Large Pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Excessive Flushing / Redness
  • Spider Veins
  • Stretch Marks

IPL Photorejuvenation uses advanced technology to allow us to customise treatments for different skin tones and conditions. It is ideal for improving the overall look and texture of the skin without the need for intense downtime associated with surgery or other intense skin procedures.

IPL Photorejuvenation is performed in our clinics in London Harley Street and Manchester by trained skin specialists who are highly qualified.

IPL can be used to treat the full face or just areas affected, as well as hands.

Now I love my skin, I feel younger and fresher and I’m now more than happy to go out with just moisturiser on. It really has been a huge confidence-booster.

The Problem

IPL Skin Rejuvenation is one of the most effective treatments for smoothing out the tone and texture of your skin and can help in treating rosacea, age spots, sun damage/spots, and general skin tone irregularities.

IPL Photorejuvenation Treatment

Your IPL Photorejuvenation treatment will start with a cleanse of the skin before a mask is placed over the eyes to protect them from the light. The IPL device will then be gently pressed onto the skin and it will emit an intense pulsed light which then passes through the skin epidermis and penetrates deeper into the dermis where the pulsed light energy heats up and stimulates cells called fibroblasts to encourage the production of fresh collagen. IPL emits a wide range of light waves which also work to reduce the appearance of redness, brown spots and discoloration in the skin as they absorb the light and eventually fade over a course of treatment.

The Results

You may need to have several treatments of IPL Photorejuvenation to achieve your desired result. Our skin specialists usually recommend 3-6 treatments spaced 1 month apart. Once your course of treatment is finished you will notice an improvement in skin discolouration, redness, sun damage and age spots. Your skin will have an overall fresh and rejuvenated appearance.

Most patients are able to return to their regular activities shortly after treatment. Your skin may be red and sensitive for a few hours following treatment, similar to sunburn. You should avoid exposure to the sun and hot water for 48 hours.

What does the treatment involve?

IPL is a system of pulsed light and lasers that penetrates the skin to improve tone and texture. No gels or topical anaesthetics are required and the procedure can be carried out on the face, chest, arms and hands. Here at The Private Clinic, we offer the very latest IPL technology on the market, making treatments quicker and more effective than older IPL technologies.

How do I prepare for IPL Photorejuvenation?

We advise patients to avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure 6 weeks prior to their IPL treatment. It is also best to avoid any treatments that are likely to irritate the skin for 1-2 weeks before treatment which can include waxing. Your specialist skin practitioner will be able to go through your medical history that you provided at your consultation to advice on any medications that may cause bruising and if you have a history of cold sores than you may be required to seek GP advice before you start having treatment.

Does the treatment hurt?

IPL Photorejuvenation treatment is not painful; as the pulses of light are directed onto your skin you will experience a heated sensation and like someone is flicking your skin with an elastic band. If you are sensitive to pain then we recommend you speak to your skin specialist who may be able to apply some anaesthetic lotion to the areas being treated before your procedure.

How long does the treatment take?

IPL Photorejuvenation treatment times will depend on the area of the body being treated but most treatments take less than 1 hour to complete.

IPL Photorejuvenation treatments at The Private Clinic are only carried out by a qualified nurse or specialist skin therapist. Click here to book a consultation to find out more.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of IPL Photorejuvenation treatments that you will need will be determined by the severity of the skin condition.  Most patients start with a course of five treatments which are carried out every 4 weeks to allow for the skin to heal and recover in between. We then recommend that you have 1 or 2 IPL Photorejuvenation treatments per year to maintain your results.

All patients of The Private Clinic are given a personal treatment plan, to find out yours click here to book a consultation with one of our skin specialists.

How does IPL Photorejuvenation treat pigmentation?

IPL Photorejuvenation is a great treatment for improving the appearance of pigmentation such as age spots and sun damage. The intense pulsed light emits light waves which are absorbed by the melanin and haemoglobin in the skin which causes the pigment to fragment. These pigment fragments are then broken down naturally by the body making them less visible in appearance.

How soon will I see the results?

You will start to see some improvement in your skin a week after each IPL Photorejuvenation treatment. The best results will be seen 3-5 months after your last treatment if having a course. Your results may vary after each treatment and usually each treatment you have will be a little stronger than the one before meaning the results will start to become more noticeable over time.

To find out how IPL Photorejuvenation can help you click here to book a consultation with our skin specialists.

How long will the results last?

The results will last between 12 and 18 months, at which point you can come back to us for a top up treatment. Your results will also depend on how much your skin is exposed to the sun, if you are in the sun a lot and not wearing sun protection then it is very likely that any brown spots or redness will return.

How much does IPL Photorejuvenation cost?

The cost of IPL Photorejuvenation treatment starts from £200.

However price may vary depending on:

  • The type of treatment required.
  • The areas treated.
  • The number of treatments needed.

The best way to find out the cost of IPL Photorejuvenation treatment is to book a consultation with one of our expert laser skin practitioners where they will come up with a personalised treatment plan to help you achieve the results you desire.

Consultations with our expert laser skin practitioners are £25 however this cost is redeemable against the price of any skin treatment that you wish to book following your consultation.

Are there any side effects?

The treated area may be a little red immediately after the procedure, but this is normal and will not last long at all. Brown spots may initially appear darker after your first treatment but these will gradually fade and after multiple treatments eventually disappear.

Some other rare side effects include swelling, bruising and superficial blisters. These side effects are temporary and tend to disappear after a few days.

A full list of side effects will be discussed with you at your initial consultation. Click here to book.

Can I apply make-up after IPL treatment?

IPL Photorejuvenation treatment may leave your skin looking a little red. It is possible for you to apply make-up after treatment to reduce the appearance of this but you must avoid any abrasive treatments such as any type of exfoliator or Retin-A. At The Private Clinic we recommend wearing a good quality mineral makeup as the titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in many mineral make-up products will aid in soothing the skin.

Can I have IPL treatment on tanned skin?

It is important to let your medical expert know If you have got a tan or  if your skin has had a reaction to something as these can increase your risks of adverse side effects such as pigmentation changes.

All traces of any artificial or natural tan must have faded from the skin at least six weeks prior to treatment.

At The Private Clinic we do not perform any laser treatments on tanned skin and patients will often be required to wait until their skin returns to its normal colour.

Ideally any sun exposure should be avoided when having laser treatments. Your laser specialists will be able to discuss this is more detail and analyse your skin at your consultation.

    Comments from patients

I have had a full face IPL treatment with Marie Narsoomamode at the Private Clinic.

Marie is wonderful – she is patient and gentle. She has given me all the information that I needed to be fully informed about the procedure and I couldn’t have been more comfortable in Marie’s care. I felt that Marie’s professionalism and demure made the entire treatment experience very pleasant. I can highly recommend Marie at The Private Clinic.

    Lukas, London

‘Marie Narsoomamode was really helpful and gave me great advice regarding melasma and the option of treatment.  Reception (Carly) were really friendly and helpful – I had a great visit, I’m sure I will be back’ *

“Now I love my skin, I feel younger and fresher and I’m now more than happy to go out with just moisturiser on. It really has been a huge confidence-booster.”– (Underwent IPL) *

    Jules Barton

“Jenna is absolutely amazing. Kind, patient and empathetic. IPL can be unpleasant at times, but Jenna has made the experience much more tolerable and relaxing. There was one time when my symptoms had flared inexplicably and unexpectedly and she took it upon herself to quickly arrange a consultation with one of your dermatologists. Jenna called me the next day to see how I was feeling. Gestures like that mean so much to patients. As I said, she has made the whole process much less bewildering and ghastly. She is a credit to her profession and the clinic.” *

    Toby, London

‘Been extremely happy with my treatments with Dr Wolf and Jenna with regard to IPL treatments.  Also find Elaine on reception very helpful and kin’  *
