Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

May 31, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

If you’re looking in the mirror most mornings and thinking that your face looks tired, there’s a good chance that it’s the area around your eyes that’s making you feel that way. Lack of sleep may be a common cause, easily solved by getting a few extra winks but if you feel it may be a little more than that then you may be a candidate for blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty, sometimes also known as eyelid lift surgery or eye bag removal, is a simple, safe and quick procedure to remove excess fat and skin from around the eyes.

Your upper eyes may have excess skin which can give them a hooded, droopy appearance which as a result makes you look permanently sleepy, at the same time having excess skin on your lower eyelids can make your eyes look puffy and closed which again, makes you look tired.

The Causes of Sagging Eyelids

There are many causes for sagging eyelids; generally the ageing process plays a big part in the development of these issues which unfortunately can’t be avoided. Some people can actually be genetically predisposed to having more skin and tissue in one or both eyelids and sometimes your lifestyle and environmental factors can cause the problem, for example, people who have worked outside for many years may experience drooping eyelids.

What does a Blepharoplasty procedure involve?

Blepharoplasty can be performed on either or both the lower and upper eyelids

Upper Blepharoplasty

An upper blepharoplasty is a remodelling operation on the upper eyelid and it generally involves reducing the skin fold above the eyelashes and reducing the fatty pad which gives you the puffiness in the inner aspect of the eyelid. It is a relatively short procedure that can take as little as 30 minutes. Usually performed under local anaesthetic, an upper blepharoplasty requires minimal downtime and has lessened risks making it one of the safest and most speedy invasive procedures available. Patients can return home swiftly after their procedure with a huge difference to their eyes and face.

Lower Blepharoplasty

More complex than the upper blepharoplasty but still relatively quick, procedures for the lower lids often requires general anaesthetic and takes between 1-2 hours to perform. Eye bag removal can be done as part of a lower or combined blepharoplasty, helping to reduce puffiness, without causing a hollowed out look.

After a Blepharoplasty

After having a blepharoplasty, you will sometimes be required to stay in hospital for one night, in order to minimise swelling and bruising.

Benefits and Risks

Having a blepharoplasty, although a straightforward procedure, it is still one to research fully before you make any final decisions. You may be choosing to undergo eye surgery for any of the following reasons;

  • An improved youthful appearance
  • Increased confidence
  • Easier to apply make-up,
  • No more looking tired
  • Improved vision in some cases

There are of course, as there is with any surgery, a set of risks and side effects which will be discussed with at your consultation.

What does Blepharoplasty do?

February 24, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

It’s often cited as one of the quickest and easiest plastic surgeries, with relatively small downtime and noticeable results. But what, exactly, does Blepharoplasty do?

Blepharoplasty Plastic Surgery upper and lower eyelids

Our eyes are one of the first areas to show visible signs of ageing and the effects can sometimes feel impossible to prevent; at less than 1mm, skin around the area is the thinnest on the body and signs of tiredness or dehydration often rear their ugly head on even the youngest of us.

To make matters worse skin around the eye thins even more as we age, meaning fine lines become more pronounced and the most minor of issues can feel extremely noticeable. Perhaps it’s no surprise then that Blepharoplasty was the second most popular cosmetic surgery treatment last year, with a total of 7,752 procedures performed in the UK alone.

The treatment, although surgical, takes little as 30 minutes and has extremely high safety records. The exact version of the treatment you need will vary, however, depending on what exactly you’re looking to achieve from it…

Hooded eyelids

Those who have heavy drooping on their upper eyelids are best suited for an Upper Blepharoplasty. Having hooded eyelids is not just an aesthetic issue; lots of patients come to us complaining of issues with vision or heaviness in the area that can make them feel tired, regardless of whether they are young or old.

Treatment on the upper eyelids is normally the most simple of any blepharoplasty procedure – taking around 30-60 minutes for the majority of cases. Likewise upper eyelid revision is usually performed under local anaesthetic, allowing patients to return home on the same day as their treatment (after adequate resting time, of course), while recovery is normally relatively speedy with full results on show within a couple of months.

Under eye bags

Under eye bags: something a lot of us have to battle with (particularly as we age) and something that’s extremely difficult to conceal. A Lower Blepharoplasty is usually the best way to address the issue, removing fatty deposits and excess skin from the area to reawaken the eye and leave the area refreshed.

More complicated than treatment for the upper lids (but still a fairly simple plastic surgery), lower blepharoplasty will normally take around 1-2 hours and is often performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you may have to stay in a hospital overnight after your procedure.

While the treatment is extremely effective in removing bags in the area, it’s important to remember it cannot remove discolouration; consultations with skin experts are the best way to ascertain what will and, as always, we firmly recommend against going with any clinic that doesn’t give you adequate consultation or consideration time.

Puffy eyelids

Depending on where the puffiness around your lids is, you may require either one of the above – or a combination of the two. A Combined Blepharoplasty will always be tailored to your needs so will vary massively from patient to patient, but is often be performed under general anaesthetic due to its more complicated nature meaning, again, the prospect of an overnight stay in hospital.

Sutures are often used to close blepharoplasty incisions, and these will normally be removed after 4-5 days regardless of the area it is performed in. Healing, however, is a completely individual process – work with your clinic to understand the best way forward for you.

Wrinkles

While Blepharoplasty can help ease heaviness in the eyes and get rid of excess skin, it isn’t always the best treatment for wrinkles around the eyes. Issues like crow’s feet are normally better solved through the use of non-invasive treatments like wrinkle injections or a resurfacing skin peel or treatment. This is why proper consultation with your practitioner is absolutely vital – only they can advise on the best way forward.

The Private Clinic

With over 30 years of Harley Street excellence and a team of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons behind us, we know you’re not simply a number. Your needs aren’t the same as anybody else’s and, even if undergoing the same procedure, your treatment should never feel the same as anybody else’s. We believe in working with you so you’re fully aware of why we choose a treatment, and what results you can expect to achieve.

Remember – Blepharoplasty is still a surgical procedure and should never be something you rush in to. A good surgeon should be able to assess you thoroughly and tell you whether the treatment is the best (or the only) way to combat whatever you’re looking to achieve. You and your safety are always the most important part of any treatment; remember that, and you should be able to achieve your expectations with sensitivity and care. www.theprivateclinic.co.uk

Blepharoplasty: A Simple Procedure that gives Impressive Results…with the right Surgeon, of course!

August 15, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Of all the signs of ageing, one of the hardest to disguise is drooping, excess skin around the eyes. Short of constantly wearing sunglasses it can’t be hidden, nor can make-up conceal it as easily as other imperfections.

What makes the matter worse, however, is how many of us it affects. In 2013 BAAPS reported a 14% increase in the number of people opting for eyelid surgery with 7,808 procedures carried out. Further yet, with many in their twenties and thirties suffering from the condition, eyelid laxity is far from just a problem for those battling the years.

But what can be done about it and how complicated is the treatment? We explore the surprisingly quick and easy blepharoplasty – a procedure designed to transform your eyes from tired and sagging, to refreshed and youthful, in what can be as little as 30 minutes under local anaesthetic.

What is blepharoplasty?

Whether it’s performed due to time leaving its mark or genetics, blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids. The treatment can be used to tackle a number of issues around the eye including reducing drooping, tightening creases and folds in the eyelids, or lifting the skin surrounding eyes.

How does the blepharoplasty procedure work?

Everyone is different, and we keep that in mind with every treatment. Each candidate needs to be properly assessed prior to blepharoplasty and your treatment will depend both on what you’re hoping to achieve and the view of the expert on how to achieve it.

There are two main areas of treatment:

Upper blepharoplasty

Procedures on the upper eyelids are relatively quick and can take as little as 30 minutes. Usually performed under local anaesthetic, an upper blepharoplasty is extremely safe and requires minimal downtime following the procedure with patients able to return home swiftly afterwards. We carry out our upper blepharoplasty procedures in our very own theatres, avoiding the need for a hospital stay.

Lower blepharoplasty

More complex than the upper blepharoplasty, procedures for the lower lids often require general anaesthetic and take between 1-2 hours to perform, but are again a safe way to combat ageing eyes.

For some, a combination of both procedures may be more beneficial to restore a youthful and refreshed appearance, but the look you want and the best method to achieve it will always be discussed fully at consultation stage with one of our Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.

It is important to remember that despite its benefits, blepharoplasty is not a one-size-fits-all wrinkle buster; lines like crow’s feet cannot be treated through eyelid surgery and any surgeon you consult should advise you on other treatments like wrinkle injections and fillers to resolve this.

Quick and safe when performed by industry professionals, blepharoplasty is an effective solution to tackle excess skin around the eyes. While the procedure itself is speedy, the results our expert cosmetic plastic surgeons achieve can be life changing. By working with only the best professionals, your safety and satisfaction can be guaranteed and one of the most frustrating facial annoyances can be fully transformed.
