Thread veins are much smaller veins in comparison to varicose veins. They are commonly referred to as spider veins as they often branch off others causing them to have a spider or web-like appearance. Treatment for thread or spider veins is different from treating varicose veins and depending on their severity any of the following treatments could be suitable for you;

Sclerotherapy

Microsclerotherapy is an effective thread vein treatment that can help reduce the visibility of thread veins found on the legs. The treatment involves using a sclerosing agent which is injected into the affected veins and causes the vein walls to become sticky and blood is no longer able to pass through. Once the blood stops passing through, the capillaries will then collapse and be absorbed naturally by the body.

Treatment time: 5-30 minutes depending on the amount being treated
Course of treatment: 3-5 treatments
Downtime: You will be required to wear compression stockings and keep out of the sun for 6 weeks post-treatment.
Results: 3-6 weeks for small veins. Larger thread veins may not see results until 3-4 months.

Cutera CoolGlide

The Cutera CoolGlide is a laser treatment aimed at reducing the appearance of thread veins from all over the body including the face. The laser directs intense light at the spider veins which causes the blood within them to coagulate and divert back into veins that are located deeper beneath the surface of the skin. Once no blood is passing through the vein, it is then gradually absorbed by the body.

Treatment time: 15-30 minutes depending on the amount being treated

Downtime: May have redness, swelling or bruising which will subside after 1-2 weeks.

Intense Pulsed Light

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses IPL technology to help improve and reduce the appearance of facial thread veins. The advanced technology allows us to customise treatments for different skin tones and conditions. The IPL handpiece will then be gently placed onto the skin where it will emit intense pulsed light. This light works to heat up the vein causing the vein to then collapse and be naturally absorbed by the body. IPL devices can produce different types of pulsed light making it an ideal treatment for different variations of facial veins. IPL only affects the lower layers of the skin allowing it to reach the spider veins without causing damage to the surface of the skin.

Regenlite is a pulsed dye laser treatment which is ideal for removing unwanted or abnormal blood vessels in the skin on the face and legs. The vascular laser treatment effectively targets only the vein requiring treatment meaning the surrounding skin is unaffected. The high-energy beam is absorbed by the thread veins which then become damaged and shut down.

Treatment time: Around 25 minutes which will vary depending on the area and amount being treated
Number of treatments: We typically recommend 3 treatments but some patients see great results after just 1 treatment.
Downtime: Redness, bruising or swelling may occur but this will settle down over a couple of days.
