Varicose Vein Treatments at our Northampton Veins Clinic

The Private Clinic has performed over 7,000 vein procedures so you can be certain that you are in safe hands.

All of our varicose vein treatments are performed under local anaesthetic meaning your procedure will be pain-free. Our expert nursing team will be on hand to ensure you are feeling comfortable throughout your procedure.

All procedures are performed on a walk-in, walk-out basis which means you will not be required to stay overnight and will be free to travel home shortly after your procedure has taken place.

The varicose vein treatments that our Consultant Vascular Surgeon provides are:

EVLA

Endovenous laser ablation treatment is one of our most popular treatments for varicose veins. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommended EVLA as a gold standard varicose vein treatment. The procedure involves a laser fibre being inserted into the vein. The heat from the laser fibre causes damage to the vein walls which results in them collapsing. The damaged veins are then naturally broken down and absorbed by the body. EVLA is performed under local anaesthetic so you should not feel any pain during treatment.

RFA

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is very similar to EVLA treatment and is also recommended as a gold standard treatment by NICE. RFA uses radiofrequency thermal heat energy to effectively shrink the walls of the affected veins. Ultrasound guidance is used to direct the RFA needle through the catheter tube to the veins being treated. Once the thermal heat energy has been applied, the vein is closed off and blood is re-routed to healthier veins within the leg.

Foam Sclerotherapy

Foam Sclerotherapy is great for patients with isolated varicose veins on the leg. The treatment involves injecting a foam solution into the veins. The solution causes inflammation within the vein and the blood is then redirected to healthier veins. The walls of the vein will become sticky resulting in the vein walls closing shut. The vein will then be naturally absorbed by the body. Foam Sclerotherapy is performed under local anaesthetic for a pain-free treatment.

Phlebectomy

A Phlebectomy is a microsurgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic for large varicose veins that are close to the surface of the skin. Small incisions are made in the leg to remove the veins. This procedure is most effective on surface veins and therefore is often combined with another treatment such as EVLA to treat the source of varicose veins to avoid recurrence.

Thread Vein Treatments

We also offer thread vein treatments at our Northampton Vein Clinic.

Microsclerotherapy treatment for thread veins on the legs. This treatment is similar to Foam Sclerotherapy but instead uses a liquid sclerosing solution which is injected into the veins. The sclerosant works to irritate the inner vein walls so that they become inflamed and sticky. This results in the vein walls sticking together, closing up and stopping any more blood from pooling within it.

Intense Pulsed Light can be used on thread veins on the face or legs. The treatment works by firstly using IPL light energy to selectively absorb  haemoglobin which reduces redness, but also thermal heat transfer to target to the blood vessel wall.

Thread vein treatments often require a course of treatment for the best results.

Your Varicose Vein Journey

Our Northampton team are extremely knowledgeable in varicose vein treatments.

Mr Rajiv Pathak provides patients with an expert and personal level of care throughout their treatment journey.

Step 1 – Varicose Vein Consultation & Scan
Step 2 – Varicose Vein Treatment
Step 3 – Follow-Up Appointment
Step 4 – Additional Treatment if required

All leg vein consultations in Northampton include a Duplex Ultrasound scan, a NICE approved gold standard measure for assessing venous disease in the lower limbs. The ultrasound scan enables our surgeons to see deep inside the veins to identify the root cause of your vein problems. Following the scan, your vascular surgeon will determine the most effective treatment to treat them.

All vein treatment plans will be personalised to you depending on the severity of your varicose veins.

In most cases, patients are suitable for EVLA or RFA treatment. These are the recommended as the Gold Standard treatments for varicose veins according to NICE Guidelines. Sometimes combination of treatments may be required such as Foam Sclerotherapy or a Phlebectomy which can remove veins closer to the surface of the skin.

We welcome self-pay private patients seeking varicose vein and thread vein/spider vein removal procedures.

Varicose Vein FAQs

What are the symptoms of varicose veins?

Varicose veins can cause a range of symptoms that will vary from person to person. Symptoms can include:

  • Enlarged, swollen, lumpy, twisted or bulging veins
  • Blue or purple veins
  • Uncomfortable heavy feeling in the legs
  • Muscle cramps in the leg
  • Swollen feet or ankles
  • Dry skin around the affected veins
  • Burning or throbbing sensation in the legs
  • Itchy skin around the vein
What is the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?

Thread or Spider veins and varicose veins are not the same and the treatment for each type of vein will be different.

Spider veins, also known as thread veins are smaller veins that are often blue or red in colour. They appear just below the surface of the skin and often form in clusters. They are typically caused by trauma or pressure within the area, but can also be an indication of further

How soon will I see the results from Varicose Vein treatment?

You should be able to notice a difference in your leg immediately following your varicose vein procedure. In most cases, you will be required to wear a compression stocking for at least a week which will hide the results.

Once the stocking is removed, you will notice that the varicose vein has reduced. There may be some bruising, redness or swelling present.

The final results from varicose vein treatment should be expected around 6 weeks following your treatment. Everyone’s body heals differently so it may take slightly longer for the bruising to fade.

Is Varicose Vein treatment available on the NHS?

Whilst Varicose Vein treatment is available on the NHS, there is a very strict grading system which unfortunately stops a lot of people from people suitable for treatment. You will most likely be recommended to try non-surgical options such as compression stockings but these will not be effective at treating the veins. Find out more about Varicose Vein treatment on the NHS here.

At The Private Clinic, we provide patients self-pay private varicose vein treatments for anyone with varicose veins, no matter what their symptoms may be. All consultations include a free ultrasound scan to ensure there are no underlying venous issues and our Consultant Vascular surgeon will advise on the best method of treatment for you.
