Medical Associations from the UK and Turkey come together to issue minimum guidelines for Hair Transplant Surgery

A statement has been issued by the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS), the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (TSPRAS) that to offers advice and guidance for patients that are considering hair transplant surgery in Türkiye (Turkey).

Hair Transplants in Türkiye

It is widely known that there has been a significant increase in the number of people travelling abroad for hair transplant surgery over the past few years. Whilst many have a successful trip and result, many are left feeling disappointed.

Hair Transplant Revision

Over 30% of patients that come to see us for a hair transplant procedure have had a badly performed hair transplant procedure performed elsewhere and are now seeking revision surgery to fix the mistakes.

In a lot of cases, the donor area can become damaged during a badly performed hair transplant procedure which makes any future revision surgery very difficult.

The four organisations strongly urge anyone from the UK considering travelling to Türkiye for hair transplant surgery to consider the following points:

  • Patients should have a consultation with the doctor who will be performing the surgery and who will make the recommendation on donor hair harvesting method, number of follicular units/hairs required, and hairline/transplant design.
  • Patients should be given two weeks to consider the doctor’s recommendation and the proposed consent form before making any form of payment for surgery.
  • Patients should be explicitly informed at the initial consultation if it will not be a doctor operating on them by making skin incisions to harvest the donor hair or implant it, including whether this will be a technician.
  • The interim progress and final result of the hair transplant should be assessed by the doctor who performed the surgery and patients should have the opportunity to voice any grievances they have as well as a clear process for complaints.
  • Systems should be in place for complications to be dealt with by the clinic during and outside of working hours, such as assessing skin necrosis, infection, cysts, dysaesthesia, and supplying antibiotics.

Hair Transplants at The Private Clinic

At The Private Clinic, these guidelines are already in place and followed to ensure that our patients are receiving the best possible care.

Consultant Hair Transplant Surgeon, Mr Michael Mouzakis, has said that he welcomes the statement from the four organisations coming together to offer advice and guidance for patients.

“Cheaper can sometimes prove far more expensive. We frequently have patients come to see us at The Private Clinic, who need corrective surgery after travelling abroad.

“Travelling abroad for cosmetic surgery is not a new phenomenon but people need to consider it very seriously. There are, of course, first-class surgeons abroad, who will do an excellent job. But that isn’t the point as the recovery period is important too.

“All the guidance put forward by the four organisations are vital to ensure patient safety for hair transplants, which are becoming very popular abroad – but are certainly not without consequences.

One of the biggest concerns of treatments abroad is the lack of regulation. In the UK, all clinics doctors and surgeons are heavily regulated by the CQC and GMC and patients can report poor care to these public bodies. Similar set ups are not always in place in other countries.

As with all forms of surgery, there are always risks of complications, but these can be minimised if proper procedures are in place and the surgery is agreed and planned ahead of time and carried out by a specialist doctor or surgeon.

I am a member of many medical organisations such The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) who are consistently working to educate potential hair transplant patients on the dangers of fraudulent hair transplant clinics and the importance of searching for experienced, ethical doctors and surgeons to perform their hair transplant surgery.”
