Double Chin

Double Chin

A double chin often referred to as submental fullness by medical professionals is an undesirable condition that many people are concerned about. A double chin occurs when there is excess volume under the chin and neck area which gathers around the neck sagging down to create a wrinkle that looks as if the individual has a secondary chin, but an ill-defined jawline can also give the appearance of a double chin.

The visual appearance of a double chin can dramatically affect confidence and it often can contribute to making those who have the condition looking older or appearing heavier than they actually are. Luckily here at The Private Clinic we have a variety of treatments available to help with this common issue and make you finally feel proud of your facial profile.

The excess volume in this area can be made up of a number of factors including;

  • Loose Skin
  • Excess neck fat
  • Small/weak chin
  • Drooping salivary gland
  • Sagging platysma Muscle

And it is usually a combination of these that result in a visible double chin not just excess fat like many assume is the cause.

Double chin or submental fullness can affect both men and women. Ageing is a big cause, as we age we lose elasticity in the skin making it more likely to sag. Some people are more prone to developing submental fullness which is just down to their genetics. Weight gain can also have an effect and fat in this area is particularly difficult to remove despite exercise and dieting.

For over 30 years, we have offered our patients the most advanced and effective cosmetic treatments, and have some of the most experienced specialists in the industry that can advise on the best treatment for a double chin. Available Treatments

Micro liposuction is a great procedure for reducing the appearance of a double chin. You will have local anaesthetic, adrenaline and salty water injected into the area to be treated; this is known as tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid not only numbs the area to be treated but it also causes the targeted area/s to become swollen and firm which helps separate the fat cells from the surrounding tissue. A small incision is then made and fat is removed area using microcannulas on average around 10-20ml of fat can be removed through this method which is often more than enough to reduce the appearance of a double chin or submental fullness.

You will see an instant change in the shape to your lower face after the procedure but it can take 3-4 weeks for swelling to reduce and your final results to be seen.

As fat cells have been removed, the results of this procedure are permanent however you will have to keep to your ideal weight. The downtime associated with this procedure is minimal with many patients returning to work after 48 hours and many feel able to return to their usual activities within 7 days. Your surgeon will give you the correct postoperative advice.

A neck lift or lower rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of your jawline and neck. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and incisions are made under the chin and behind the ears but will vary depending on the technique chosen.

The platysma muscle is tightened and any excess skin or fat is removed. Your incision lines are then closed.

You will have initial swelling and bruising after a necklift procedure and your final results will be best seen after 3-6 months. The results of a necklift are long lasting but this will depend on how your skin naturally ages and the treatments or products you are using to take care of it.

You will have some downtime with this procedure and we usually recommend that you take 1-2 weeks off work to fully recover. You will have swelling and bruising which will gradually fade after a few weeks.
