Cellulite: symptoms, causes and treatment

REJUVENATION

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite, also known as orange-peel skin, is the formation of lumps and dimples in the skin that affects 80-90% of women at some point in their lives. Cellulite is most common on the thighs and buttocks but can also appear on the hips, abdomen, upper arms and breasts.

A cellulite severity grade

Known as the ‘Nurnberger-Muller Scale’ this scale classifies cellulite into 4 different categories.

GRADE

DESCRIPTION

Grade 0 No dimpling visible
Grade 1 When skin is pinched, between 1-4  superficial depression can be seen but is otherwise smooth.
Grade 2 Between 5 -9 nine medium-depth depressions appear on the skin when standing.
Grade 3 10 or more deep depressions visible at all times.

What causes cellulite?

The definitive cause of cellulite is unknown however the reason for its appearance is down to the fat cells underneath the skin. We have fibrous connective cords that tether the skin to underlying muscle beneath the skin and any fat tends to lie between these. When fat cells accumulate, they can instead push up against the skin whilst the fibrous connective cords are pulling down which then causes an uneven surface to the skin and dimpling known as cellulite.
Just because cellulite involves fat cells however does not mean that weight gain is a cause. Weight gain can make cellulite more noticeable but many people who are very fit and lean can develop cellulite too. It is thought that cellulite could be genetics as it does tend to run in families.

Can cellulite be treated?

Cellulite is difficult to treat, but at The Private Clinic we have some great treatments to help you reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Mesotherapy for Cellulite

Mesotherapy is not a new technique, having been established originally in the 1950s in France – it was previously used to help improve circulation whilst treating infections and vascular diseases too.
Mesotherapy these days can be used all over the body to help with general skin rejuvenation, hair loss and cellulite. Mesotherapy involves injected the area being treated with a formula of medications. These will help to break down the connective tissue bands and therefore reduce the trapped fat resulting in a smoother appearance to the skin.

Body Ballancer for Cellulite

Body Ballancer is a compression therapy treatment which uses the principles and techniques of manual lymphatic drainage massages. Patients will be required to wear a specialised garment before relaxing on the treatment bed. The garment will then inflate to simulate a gentle to firm massage as set by the practitioner.
Body Ballancer treatment works to boost circulation by bringing healthy oxygenated blood to the areas being treated. This combined with the massage action will help to effectively breakdown the build-up and appearance of cellulite.
