What is Cellulite?

Cellulite, also known as orange peel skin is considered to affect 8 out of 10 women. Celebrity magazine often features revealing photographs of celebrities at their most exposed, with cellulite pictures frequently splashed across their pages. Rightly or wrongly, it highlights just how common the issue is for women (and men to a much lesser extent).

Cellulite is a localised skin condition that causes the skin to appear dimpled and uneven. The change in skin texture is caused by both expanding fat cells that sit underneath the skin and the fibrous bands that run perpendicular to the surface of the skin. The fibrous bands or tissue cords anchor the skin to the muscle and these can shrink and become shorter due to fat cells pushing against them. This can then cause them to pull the skin inwards causing a dimpled affect on the outer layer of skin and the fat cells can push up against the skin causing a rippling affect.

The cellulite grading system known as the ‘Nurnberger-Muller Scale’ classifies cellulite into different levels of severity.

Grades Description
Grade 1 No dimpling when pressure is applied
Grade 2 Dimpling when pressure is applied
Grade 3 Visible dimpling when standing
Grade 4 Visible dimpling when standing and lying down

The most common causes of cellulite include

  • Poor nutrition
  • Loss of tone and elasticity due to ageing
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Hormonal changes such as pregnancy and menopause
  • Lack of exercise
  • Poor circulation

However, a psychologist has commented on just why she thinks so many women have noticeable cellulite with her interesting theory in an article that one of our surgeons was asked to comment on. Martha Sanchez Navarro claims cellulite is not about not enough exercise or poor circulation but by what happened to us as children. She believes our emotions find an outlet through physical symptoms. Taking the natural assumption that how we feel can reflect on how we look and extending it so much has prompted a lot of attention.

The Private Clinic, was asked to respond to such claims by the Daily Mail where we started that ‘until more research is carried out, women should continue to focus on healthy diet, weight maintenance and regular exercise regime, and try not to fluctuate any of these factors too much and keep them consistent.

What treatments are available for cellulite?

If cellulite is bothering you, then we do have a few treatments that can help to reduce the appearance and hopefully boost confidence when it comes to bearing all.

Mesotherapy for Cellulite

Mesotherapy is a non-surgical aesthetic treatment that involves injecting a specialised pharmaceutical and homeopathic medications, plant extracts, vitamins, and other ingredients into the subcutaneous fat underneath the skin. It is said that when using the correct blend of ingredients it can help to break down the connective tissue bands which reduce trapped areas of fat which causes the dimpling effect to the skin. The results are gradual with most patients needing at least 3 treatments before starting to notice a new smoothness to the skin. The results of Mesotherapy treatment are expected to last up to a year with continued treatment being required to maintain the best results.

Mesotherapy treatment is available in our London Harley StreetManchesterLeeds and Birmingham clinics with our team of expert doctors and nurse injectors.

Body Ballancer® for Cellulite

Body Ballancer® is a compression therapy treatment that requires the patient to wear a specialised garment for the lower half of the body. Whilst then relaxing on a treatment bed, the garment will then inflate and deflate to simulate a gentle to firm massage which targets every inch of the areas being treated. A course of Body Ballancer® treatment can help to boost circulation which will bring healthy oxygenated blood to the areas being treated that combined with the massage action will help to effectively breakdown the build-up and appearance of cellulite.

The Body Ballancer® treatment is available in our London Harley Street, Leeds and Manchester clinics.
