Cosmetic Surgery After Sports Injuries

June 15, 2018 by Steffanie Griffiths Leave a Comment

Injuries in sports are unfortunately all too common, with the hitting, crushing and nasty falls associated with various sports. This blog post focuses on two frequently occurring injuries or consequences that can occur in a wide range of sporting activities – a fractured nose, and scarring, and your cosmetic surgery solutions for resolving these.

Nose Surgery after Sports Injuries

Nasal fractures are the most frequently injured facial bones, occurring through a variety of sports, such as boxing, baseball and rugby. And what can you do about it? Either immediately after trauma and before swelling starts, or in the first two weeks post trauma after swelling has minimised, the technique of Simple Closed Reduction can be used. This is where bones are simply realigned to their original position. Although, in some cases, this is not sufficient and surgery is required to align the bones properly. After trauma, patients should therefore immediately visit an emergency department or primary care provider, who will refer you to a surgeon who will evaluate and treat your injuries.

If you are after the two week stage, your bones have started to or have set and cannot be resolved with Simple Closed Reduction. There is a solution, however. Fractured noses that have not been set, badly displaced noses, and also those that have not healed sufficiently after being reset, may all be corrected with Rhinoplasty (surgical nose reshaping). Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure which can reshape the nose to reverse the effects of the injury on the nasal appearance, and if required, breathing. This is something our expert rhinoplasty surgeons can help with. If you have also been left with a deviated septum after trauma (when the septum has been displaced to one side), affecting nasal breathing, septoplasty could be performed simultaneously. Your surgeon will evaluate if this is required.

What happens in the procedure? In the rhinoplasty surgery, careful incisions will be made to access damaged or deviated impacted tissue, or any tissue obstructing the nasal airway, which can be discarded or repositioned. For some patients, grafts could be required for greater support. If the fracture is the result of a forceful blow, you may also have fracture of the cartilage, and the procedure would resolve your cartilage and bone injuries. Complex breaks could necessitate more involved surgeries. Your rhinoplasty procedure would be tailored to the severity of the trauma experienced, in addition to your functional and aesthetic goals – patients can also ask the surgeon to resolve other nasal defects, for example, a bulbous tip, bump along the bridge or oversized nostrils. Regarding the technique used, advanced open or closed surgery are both options available and your surgeon will assess the best method for your case.

For Rhinoplasty Surgery after sports injuries, we are able to offer renowned highly experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeons with specialist knowledge in reconstruction, who achieve outstanding results.

Scarring

Scars from injury are common in several sports, from boxing, soccer, skateboarding and cycling, which can lead to nasty cuts and scrapes, to hockey where the face is uncovered and left vulnerable to impact from sticks, pucks or people. And these scars are usually permanent. If the scar is troubling you, there are highly effective scar reduction options available.

For scars from such sporting injuries, Surgical Scar Excision may be the best option, which can reduce the size of or reposition scars. Available techniques for Surgical Scar Excision include the following:

  • Excision and Direct Skin Closure: This technique requires cutting out the scar, followed by drawing and stitching together the surrounding skin, to leave a much neater, new scar
  • Excision and skin grafting: The scar is cut out and replaced with a skin graft, taken from a healthy area of the body. The skin grafts can be either full thickness or partial
  • Excision and repositioning: This method again necessitates cutting out the scar, while changing its direction so it runs alongside a relaxed and natural skin tension line

At The Private Clinic, we will offer you medical assessment and scar treatment, within our state-of-the-art rooms for minor surgery, at one of our clinics nearest to you. You will be treated by some of the county’s most experienced surgeons and doctors, including top Consultant Dermatologists, who are all highly skilled in surgical scar excision, and have the ability to treat different severities of scarring.

Is your workout ageing you?

February 21, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Is your workout ageing you?

As we get older, many of us find that we have to work that little bit harder to achieve the body that we desire. However, whilst years of running, weight training, cycling and careful dieting may enable us to possess the body of a twenty-something long past after 40th birthdays, do our faces pay the price…?

An intense exercise regime may be integral to keeping your curves in check, but exercise – like anything done to excess, has the potential to age you…

Is running a fast track to wrinkles?

Leading US cosmetic surgeon Stephen Mulholland recently revealed that 25% of his clients were runners seeking to combat their ‘runner’s face’, believing that years of pavement pounding were the ‘route’ cause of their wrinkles. Whilst there is little scientific evidence to support this theory, it is a notion supported by New York cosmetic surgeon Gerald Imber, who cited running as the biggest cause of premature wrinkles after drinking and smoking.

However, a recent German study found that it is actually the free radical damage from an increased intake of oxygen that contributes to ageing, rather than the impact from the actual activity. After prolonged exercise, such as a 25-mile run, the body changes its metabolism with a resulting increase in free radicals – atoms that can cause damage to your cells and speed up the ageing process. However the study found that it takes very strenuous exercise to increase cell damage, so jogging a few times a week isn’t going to create a noticeable impact on the tautness of your skin.

The area of the body most susceptible to sagging as a result of running is the breasts, as it causes the ligaments here to stretch. Whilst sports bras can reduce the impact that such activities can have on the breasts, some women opt to undergo a breast lift to achieve a more youthful breast contour.

Don’t run the risk…

People who exercise outdoors are likely to be more susceptible to ageing than those who favour the gym, as many will fail to protect their skin against sun damage. This can cause an array of skin problems, from age spots to premature wrinkling. If you’ve failed to protect your skin during outdoor workouts in the past, it’s never too late to implement changes. However, if you’ve been left with wrinkles as a result of damage caused in your younger years, we have a range of excellent treatments specifically designed to target premature ageing. Chemical peels and Botox can help reverse signs of ageing, enabling you to look as youthful on the inside as you feel on the outside.

10 Ways to Beat the Christmas Bulge

December 18, 2012 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Christmas comes but once a year and it’s a time to eat, drink and be merry, but as the parties start, so does the temptation to overindulge on both food and alcohol.

Is it really impossible to enjoy the Christmas festivities without suffering from an expanding waistline? Celebrity personal trainer, Laura Marin, thinks in order to do so, you’ll need a plan…

Laura says: “For most of us, we only really indulge on four big days: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Years Day, but if you have plenty of parties to go to, you’ll need a plan.”

Beat the Christmas Bulge

If you want to beat the Christmas bulge this year and get to 1st January 2016 without feeling like you have a mountain to climb to regain control of your weight, follow Laura’s 10 simple steps:

  1. Join the party just for an hour: Have a drink and then leave (very Anna Wintour!) Why not ask for some water and combine it with your drink (white wine spritzer?) or ask for ice cubes so your drink lasts longer?
  2. Think about what you are eating: If you are going to lots of dinners, make sure you think about what you’re eating – it’s likely to be food that’s heavier and more rich than usual, so watch your portions. If you’re the host, buy only the necessary amount of food and make sure you always have fresh fruits and vegetables on the table.
  3. Plan your whole day: f you have an event at night, make sure you have a good breakfast, a healthy and light lunch and (this is the key to success) a snack around 6pm. This could be a pot of natural yoghurt, a handful of berries or raw almonds and cashew nuts. This will ensure that when you arrive, you’re not starving and your first drink doesn’t hit an empty stomach and cause blood sugar levels. It’ll also make you less hungry for dinner and less prone to overindulging.
  4. Skipping meals is not an option if you want to be healthy:  Three meals and two snacks a day are a must. With richer food all around you’ll want to think about eating smaller portions. Order a salad or extra vegetables with your main meal. Avoid starches and unnecessary carbs in the form of pasta or rice, especially at night.
  5. Take control: Be proactive – if you know you’ve got lots of parties coming up, start taking control and monitoring your diet now so you have a good chance of looking and weighing the same in January.
  6. Drink water: Drink lots of water but in small amounts. You’ll be thirsty and dehydrated, so drinking water more often but in smaller amounts works better than drinking 2 pints of water all at once.
  7. Workout: Christmas is not an excuse to stop working out. It’s vital to keep up your healthy eating and exercising regime. Weigh yourself regularly and take action when you think it’s necessary. Not knowing where you are with your weight is your worst enemy – fight your fears and be a winner.
  8. Take responsibility: If you’re doing well sticking to the plan – celebrate! Whether it’s a massage, a facial or a new dress/suit – you deserve it!
  9. Be persistent: If you didn’t resist the temptation of a delicious and decadent dinner, you’ll have to make it up to yourself. 72 hours of being good will do just fine.
  10. Rest up: Get plenty of rest in between parties. You’ll want at least 7-8 hours a night. Sleep is one of your best allies in the fight against gaining extra weight this season.
