Mike Thurston FUE Hair Transplant Patient Story

May 4, 2020 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Mike Thurston is a personal trainer and online fitness coach who came to us back in early 2019 seeking hair loss advice.

Mike had always been prepared to experience a degree of hair loss as he knew his dad had suffered with hair loss from an early age. Having previously had quite thick hair during his teens, Mike started to notice his hair thinning and certain hair styles were making this more prominent.

In 2017, Mike decided to admit defeat and shave his hair off to a buzz cut which at the time he felt would disguise the bald pattern of hair loss however he started to grow his hair back and used products to make it appear fuller with a stronger hairline. Over time however he felt this was a lot of effort to maintain and he either needed to commit to a buzz cut or start looking into a more permanent solution such as a hair transplant.

Mike started his research to find out more about the procedure and decided to come along for a consultation at The Private Clinic with expert hair transplant surgeon, Dr Ragu Reddy.

Dr Reddy provided Mike with a lot of information and advice for him to think about and consider before he decided to go ahead with a FUE Hair Transplant procedure.

“The big thing about when you get a hair transplant done is that it really is down to the surgeon who is doing the procedure. If I am getting something like this done on my hairline, which is very important to me and which a lot of people are going to see…  I want it to be done by the best of the best and I don’t care if it does cost me a lot of money. It is like anything in life, you get what you pay for. So I wanted to find somebody who knows what they are doing, somebody who has experience, somebody who has been doing it for years, someone who has been very consistent with delivering results and somebody who a long list of testimonials that I could look at and get some confidence from”

Mike arrived at The Private Clinic of Harley Street ready for his 2-day FUE Hair Transplant procedure. Around 1270 grafts were extracted and used to treat the hairline and the crown.

The recovery period for Mike went well and the only problem he found was not being able to exercise which was previously part of his daily routine. After three weeks, Mike did experience shock loss to his crown, and it was not until 6 months post-procedure that he started to notice the results in that area – which is very normal.

6 months post hair transplant procedure before after photo

Mike prides his recovery on his healthy lifestyle including:

  • Eating a nutritious diet
  • Regularly exercise
  • Reduced alcohol consumption
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Not getting stressed

Mike also took finasteride and applied topical minoxidil which he felt has helped to maintain his results.

Now, 12 months on Mike is thrilled with the results from his hair transplant and offers any patients considering a hair transplant the following advice:

  • Do your research into the procedure, clinic and surgeon
  • Attend a consultation to assess your suitability
  • Shave your head first to see if you like it – you may not choose to go ahead with a hair transplant

FUE Hair Transplant at The Private Clinic

  • You will be treated by highly experienced Doctors. Our Hair Transplant surgeons are highly skilled in FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and treat hundreds of patients every year.
  • FUE is a minimally invasive treatment (meaning there is no cutting of a strip) and carried out under local anaesthetic – many patients either watch TV, or even fall asleep during the procedure.
  • You will not require any stitches after your treatment. This means that the recovery time is also reduced when compared to the Strip surgery (FUT).
  • We use the finest instruments, resulting in as minimal trauma to your scalp as possible.
  • Thanks to our advanced skills and techniques, our team ensure that the donor looks intact after the hair transplant procedure and you can keep your hair really short if you prefer without any obvious scarring.
  • Following treatment, there will be no linear scarring across the back of your head as seen with the strip method (FUT) – you will be free to wear your hair long or short.
  • We choose the best follicular unit (a group of hairs), this ensures that only the strongest, healthiest grafts are used for your hair transplant procedure.
  • Your results will look natural, with denser packing – the hair is implanted in the direction that matches your hair growth.
  • We are one of the very few clinics able to offer the Unshaven Hair Transplant (U-FUE) (the long-hair hair transplant), to those who prefer not to shave beforehand. At your consultation, we will be able to advise you on whether an unshaven procedure is suitable for you.
  • Scars resulting from injuries or previous surgeries can also be corrected. In fact, 30% of all patients that come to us have been somewhere before and need further work to improve on a disappointing result. This could be a previous bad hair transplant, or we can cover linear scars caused from FUT hair transplants.

FUE Hair Transplant and Blepharoplasty – Graham

September 26, 2016 by

FUE Hair Transplant and Eyelid Surgery*

Graham’s story is a fairly common one. He woke up one morning around the age of 23 and noticed a few hairs on his pillow. From there the few were followed by a few more, and the few more were followed by a lot more until, by the time he was approaching 35, Graham was what he considered ‘bald’. In those days he was a police sergeant, which meant that his police helmet provided him with a crease around his scalp that made it far too easy to notice his gradual hair recession.

Graham before and after his hair transplant and upper blepharoplasty

The only difference in Graham’s story is that it wasn’t just the hair on his head he had to think about. As head and founder of the British Barber’s Association he was surrounded by the heads of other men all day, every day.  By the time he turned 63, Graham felt somewhat older than he actually was.

Graham when he was younger

Having tried various unsuccessful treatments, Graham met with Dr Raghu Reddy, one of The Private Clinic’s renowned Hair Transplant Surgeons. Having been declared as a number 7 on the Norwood Scale of Hair Loss (the most severe and final stage of Male Pattern Baldness), Graham was a unique case in that he nevertheless had a sufficiently populated donor area (25,000 hairs) for the surgery to make an aesthetic difference in his appearance.

“People treat older people differently and I wanted to do this for myself.”

Graham after his FUE Hair Transplant Procedure

From Graham’s perspective, the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure was a walk in the park. Although it spanned over two days, he thought that there was nothing to it and almost wished that he could do something to help – instead of just relaxing while the transplant team busied themselves with his hair follicles: “It wouldn’t stop me concentrating on a book or anything else, it’s absolutely… easy.”

Sure enough, Graham cruised through the procedure and was able to simply get up and go home straight afterwards. His first impressions say it all really. The night after the treatment finished, he couldn’t wait to get home to study the results properly. When he did, he was truly amazed: “I could see a real hairline for the first time in 30 years. I can’t tell you how good it made me feel’. Graham did go to bed within an hour of getting home, but he got up again in the middle of the night just to have another look.

“I’m really, really pleased with it. I feel much younger – that’s the truth of it.”

Graham with Hair Transplant Surgeon Dr Reddy

Dr Reddy gave him some precise instructions for the two weeks leading up to his first follow-up consultation, which basically meant that Graham was never far away from a bottle of scalp moisturising spray. In that time Graham had to follow three commandments to ensure that his hair follicles grew as they should: don’t touch any scabs, moisturise your scalp regularly, take your medication.

During his follow-up, Graham explained how good the treatment had made him feel, saying that he couldn’t be certain of what others thought, but he felt more like himself. He found that the process up until then had been ‘pain-free and straightforward – there were no issues really’.

“It looks good and I feel good about it, and it hasn’t caused me any hassle at all.”

Graham during his blepharoplasty surgery with Mr Davood Fallahdar

What followed is that Graham felt so happy with the way the procedure had gone that he decided to return to The Private Clinic for an Upper Blepharoplasty. He met with one of our most experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeons, Mr Davood Fallahdar, who advised graham that an Eyelid Correction would indeed remove the excess skin above his eyes and reduce his hooded eyelids.

This time around, the procedure was over in the blink of an eye, having lasted just over half an hour. He admits that that surgery had left him bruised but it only took ten days to clear up and for Graham to be happy with the results.

Graham before and after his upper blepharoplasty procedure

Graham now feels more youthful and he’s happy that after 25 years he no longer has a bald man looking back at him in the mirror. He sees himself and for that ‘the cost of the Hair Transplant and the Blepharoplasty and sitting still for two days were beyond worth it’.

As to how he feels now? We’ll use four of Graham’s very own words to sum it up…

“It feels more me!”

Eyebrow Transplant – Pernille, 29

September 26, 2016 by

“I’m really happy with my eyebrows now. They really help to frame your face but when I was younger I didn’t see that. I only wish I could go back and tell my younger self to put down the tweezers!”

We first met Pernille, who runs her own childminding business, late last year. Her story demonstrates how a minor treatment can make a major difference. When she was in her teens it was fashionable to have thin, arched eyebrows. She would pluck them herself or ask her friends to do it for her as part of their going out ritual.

Unfortunately, this type of regular plucking causes damage to the follicles. Eventually, Pernille’s eyebrows refused to grow back naturally. Thin brows went out of fashion and Pernille started to pencil them on with make-up. She became so conscious of them that she couldn’t leave the house without applying eyeliner to her bare brows.

This continued for several years and became more of an issue as time went by. The worst time for her was always while she was on holiday. As soon as she got out of the swimming pool or the sea she would reach for her eyebrow pencil to draw her brows back on.

Recently, Pernille was flicking through a newspaper and she spotted a story about a woman who’d had an eyebrow transplant. Intrigued, she immediately started researching online and found many before-and-after photos of people who had undergone the treatment. Pernille was amazed. She could barely believe the results.

“I talked to my husband and he was really supportive. I thought about it for a while. It meant using my savings but I thought it was worth the sacrifice.”

After reading pages of information online, Pernille eventually chose Dr Raghu Reddy, a pioneering expert in FUE (follicular unit extraction) at The Private Clinic in London. A few weeks later, she caught the train down to London for her initial consultation at the clinic. Dr Reddy listened carefully to her history and examined her bare brows. He made sure that Pernille understood that it wasn’t without implication – monthly trimming of the transplanted hairs may be required. Pernille explained that she wanted a natural arch shape as she thought it would suit her best.

Pernille took some time to think it through and two months later she was back on the train to London. Her four hour procedure was carried out under local anaesthetic as Dr Reddy plucked around 150 grafts (350 hairs) from her head. The hairs were carefully examined prior to extraction to ensure the right follicles and grafts were transferred before inserting the hairs into her brows.

Pernille carefully followed the aftercare instructions. She wore sunglasses for a few days to disguise the little redness that is common to appear shortly afterwards. The results are visibly immediately and Pernille could see the outline of her new brows. Two months on and she’s amazed by the results…with final results to settle in one year on.

“Now I’ve got my brows back for good. I have to trim them every four weeks because they keep growing like the hair on your head. It only takes two minutes. It sounds weird but it’s not.”

FUE Hair Transplant FAQs with Dr Raghu Reddy Part 1

August 13, 2018 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

The American Academy of Dermatology has declared August to be National Hair Loss Awareness Month so we are going to be focusing on hair restoration treatments to help improve the appearance of hair loss in a series of videos by Dr Raghu Reddy.

There are a lot of causes of hair loss including over-styling, illness, stress, medications, poor diet and even smoking but the biggest cause of hair loss is male pattern baldness which is usually down to your hormones and family history.

Male pattern baldness is assessed using the Norwood scale (below) and our Hair Transplant surgeons use this scale to denote the areas to be treated during your hair transplant.

what is norwood hair loss scale stages

In the videos below, Dr Reddy answers some popular questions on the FUE Hair Transplant procedure such as;

What is a FUE hair transplant?

An FUE Hair Transplant is a surgical procedure which involves redistribution of healthy follicles from the back of the scalp to the front of the scalp. FUE Hair Transplants are performed under local anaesthetic and you will be able to return home shortly after the procedure is complete. The procedure is relatively pain free although some patients note some discomfort when administering the local anaesthetic. The downtime associated with a FUE Hair Transplant is relatively low with many patients returning to their usual activities 24 hours after the procedure has taken place.

Find out more about FUE Hair Transplants here.

Is a FUE hair transplant the best procedure for me?

Dr Reddy explains that the majority of clients that come to The Private Clinic for a consultation are actually not suitable for a FUE Hair Transplant. There are some primary reasons why patients are often dissuaded from having a hair transplant and these include being too young, medical history and unrealistic expectations.

Patients who are under 30 should approach having a hair transplant so young with caution. Hair loss is progressive so over time many patients find themselves having to have multiple procedures. The donor area is a limited zone so it should be treated delicately and having too many hair transplants so soon could easily affect the amount of grafts available for any procedures in the future.

What results can I expect?

The results that you can expect from a FUE Hair Transplant will depend on your own personal experience. Each patient will have slightly different hair and no results will be the same, although it is always our aim to leave you with results that are near natural in density over the space of 12 months. Dr Reddy believes that we are at a stage where most of the grafts that are transferred are then taken up by the patient for the remainder of their life provided they look after them well.

The patient satisfaction rate for FUE Hair Transplants at The Private Clinic is relatively high and we believe that to be down to the experience of our highly skilled hair transplant surgeons.

The Hair Transplant patient journey at The Private Clinic

April 7, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

With over 30 years of medical experience behind us, we absolutely understand the fear and anxiety that can come with Hair Loss, and we appreciate the considerations that often come hand in hand when trying to find a suitable treatment.

Patient safety, education and satisfaction form the cornerstones of how we approach and treat those who come to us, so we’re relying on reviews taken from Trustpilot (a customer experience community review platform) to give you a sense of what to expect when you come in for a Hair Transplant consultation and treatment at The Private Clinic.

Prior to your consultation

Hair Transplant procedures are aimed at patients who are suffering from Hair Loss and have bald patches they wish to repopulate with healthy hair. So, for us, the first order of business when you call to book your consultation is to determine whether this is an appropriate treatment for you.

If you don’t have Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia), your hair is only thinning and you have no bald patches, then you should see a hair health specialist, know as a Trichologist. They can determine exactly what’s causing your condition and the best way to treat it. This is particularly the case for women, as female Hair Loss is usually caused by either hormonal imbalances, stress, illness, nutrition or Traction Alopecia.

During your call we’ll ask you a certain amount of key questions to make sure that you’re on course for the right treatment, and we then offer you a choice between seeing one of our extensively-trained patient advisors for free, or to have a thorough consultation with one of our elite Hair Transplant Surgeons for £100. This option exists so as to provide our patients with the opportunity to gather as much information about the treatment before committing to a consultation.

This was exactly the case for Craig, who meet with our Patient Advisor Sorena to determine if the procedure was a viable option for him. He said:

craig

craig_1

Providing our patients with a comfortable environment where they can discuss their concerns with us is an essential part of the assessment process, and at this stage, our patient advisors will also be able to determine if there is any obvious reason why you may not be suitable for a Hair Transplant and if one of our other experts may be of better help to you – saving you time and money.

During the consultation

A consultation with one of our Hair Transplant Surgeons allows for 45 minutes, during which you will undergo a thorough examination of your scalp and hair, followed by a discussion of your medical history.

This is an opportunity to see if there are any underlying conditions and as Arnold found out, you should be wary of clinics that do not address these matters with you.

Arnold  said:Arnold

It would be unethical for us to offer you a treatment if we don’t think it’s likely to be a success. Furthermore, we work with world-class professionals who will only ever offer you honest advice, and will never push you to commit to a procedure, or give you false assurances.

beard transplants - FUE
Dr Reddy is one of the most sought-after Hair Transplant Surgeons in Europe.

Your surgeon will discuss any pre-operative measures that you may need to take, what to expect on the day of your surgery, and what kind of post-operative care will be required on your part during the appointment. Most importantly, they will manage your expectations, explain the hair regrowth cycle and the frustration you may feel during the first 4-5 months post-treatment, as well as remind you that your full results may not be visible until 9 months after your Hair Transplant.

On the day of your Hair Transplant

Your surgeon will go over the surgery and the months to follow with you once again before the beginning of the procedure. Depending on your needs and suitability, we offer Shaven (FUE) and Unshaven (UFUE) Follicular Unit Extraction. Both involve healthy hair follicles being individually taken from a donor area and being transplanted to a bold area. As the names make it clear, an FUE requires a shaved head, while it can remain unshaven for a UFUE.

Local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort and a 0.6mm-0.9mm punch device is used to move the hairs. The procedure lasts several long hours, so patients often chose to chat, read, watch TV or even sleep during the transplant, as most patients say they hardly feel any pain.

JCB Reed agreed, saying:

Your Hair Transplant team will be constantly checking up on you during the procedure, making sure that you are comfortable and taking care of your needs.

Follow ups and results

After the FUE the team will restate the post-operative measures you need to take, and provide you with their contact details, so that you can keep them updated with your progress.

Patients tend to worry in the seven months following the Hair Transplant, but remember that during this time of transition, we will be just a phone call away, even if all you need is a reassuring chat.

Are you suitable for a Hair Transplant?

October 12, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Hair Transplants can have life-changing effects for those who are eligible candidates for the procedure, but unfortunately, not everyone who rings up asking for it is suitable.

Our goal here is to clarify who wouldn’t benefit from booking a Hair Transplant consultation and why, but first, we’re going to do a quick recap about what a Hair Transplant involves.

What is an FUE Hair Transplant?

We use the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method for Hair Transplants to move healthy hair follicles from a donor area (typically the back of the head) onto a bald area.

In order to get the whole follicle along with the required glands, an advanced punch device is used, which minimises tissue trauma as well as the risk of any visible linear scarring.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic so as to reduce downtime and leaves the patient with permanent, natural results.

Who is unsuitable for a Hair Transplant?

This might seem pretty obvious but patients with a full head of hair are not going to be suitable for Hair Transplants. Unless you’re suffering from Male or Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia) and are bald, or balding, with a visible scalp, then your time will be wasted on a Hair Transplant consultation.

Hair Loss Patterns

On the flipside, if you have poor donor areas then there’s also not much we can do. This is something a specialist will be able to advise you on because even though hair from the back of the head is usually used, our expertise enables us to use body hair when applicable.

Issues can also arise if you’re losing hair at a sporadic rate since people with unstable hair loss will have to go through a period of stabilisation. With medication, it normally takes between six to nine months for your hair to reach a stage where none of it is lost or gained and an apparent pattern is once again discernable.

Another thing to keep in mind when considering a Hair Transplant is that you have to manage your expectations. Sometimes it so happens that either because of the reasons mentioned above or because someone’s expectations can’t be achieved, they will not be eligible for the procedure. You won’t be able to lower your hairline, nor should you expect to have a full head hair if your donor area is limited.

Finally, let’s reiterate, only patients who have experienced hair loss and/or degrees of balding are suitable for Hair Transplants.

Don’t despair quite yet – if you fit into any of the above categories but are still worried about hair loss, you have more options.

I am unsuitable for a transplant… what happens now?

Just because you can’t have a Hair Transplant doesn’t mean that you’re left without options. If you’re in the initial stages of hair loss and your scalp isn’t exposed yet, then you can visit one of our highly reputable Trichologists. They specialise in scalp and hair health and should be your first point of contact for any kind of hair-related concerns.

If you’re in the first or second stage of the Norwood Hair Loss Scale, a Trichologist will go through a thorough analysis of your lifestyle, diet and medical history to pinpoint the cause of your hair loss and will then be able to suggest an appropriate form of treatment.

The same goes for those who have forms of Alopecia other than the Androgenic kind. A Trichologist will be able to establish the kind of Alopecia you do have and will know what products, medication or alternative treatments will be best suited for your scalp and hair.
