What are Sagging Jowls?

November 25, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

What are jowls?

When we say jowls, we are referring to the skin along the lower jaw; if the skin is sagging below the jawline then you have what is known as sagging jowls.

blog-skin-woman-the-private-clinic

Who gets sagging jowls?

Anyone can develop sagging jowls; they have the tendency to affect women more than men and often start to appear in their 40s. Those who have a narrow face have been known to get them quicker than those with a fuller face.

What causes sagging jowls?

  • Natural ageing:  ageing unfortunately is the main cause of sagging jowls which means there is not always a lot we can do to prevent it. As we age, our skin starts to loose elastin and collagen which is the key to keeping your skin smooth, firm and taut.  As a result of losing collagen and elastin the opposite effect occurs and skin begins to give into gravity so the lower fat of the cheek moves downwards resulting in jowls.
  • Genetics: some  of us are destined to develop jowls thanks to our genetic predisposition. In these cases, jowls may appear earlier in your life.
  • Weight: when you gain weight, the skin on your face, as well as on other areas of your body, stretches to accommodate the extra fat. So when you lose weight  it may leave you with an area of loose skin, can result in jowls appearing.
  • Lifestyle: your lifestyle can play a part in the ageing of your skin. If you work on a computer a lot then the way you are sitting and how you are looking at the screen can affect your skins ageing. A number of professionals are being diagnosed with ‘computer face’ which is when jowls become more apparent if you are sitting in one position and looking down a lot. We recommend taking regular breaks, raising your computer screen and trying out some facial exercises to stretch out those muscles. Smoking can cause jowls to sag faster with the smoke containing chemicals which damage collagen and elastin. Being outside a lot is a great thing but if you are not protecting your skin against the harmful UV rays then you are damaging the collagen and elastin resulting in your skin ageing quicker. We recommend wearing UV sunscreen all year round.

How can I treat sagging jowls?

In the past, a facelift or necklift has been the best way to remove jowls but many of us may not wish to go through with that level of surgery, but want something that’s a little longer lasting than dermal fillers.

One-Stitch Facelift

The one stitch facelift is a great option that although is still a surgical procedure, the downtime is greatly minimised and it can all be performed under local anaesthetic.

The one stitch facelift targets the mid-face which can greatly improve the jaw line and sagging jowls. The procedure itself takes around 40 minutes to perform under local anaesthetic. Using local anaesthetic greatly reduces the downtime associated with traditional facelift surgery Little to no bruising is expected after the one stitch facelift meaning many patients are able to return to work and social activities much sooner than expected following surgery. We recommend patients take at least 1-2 days to recovery but many are back to work within the same week of having the procedure and make-up can be worn straight away as long as it is applied gently and kept away from the incision lines which are concealed within the hairline anyway.

Consultations for the One Stitch Facelift are available at London Harley Street with Mr Davood Fallahdar BSc, MB ChB(Hons), MD FRCS(Plast), MicroSurg (Hons), ORL H&NSurg. GMC Number: 4686602

8 Point Lift

If you still wanted to avoid surgery then our 8 point lift injectable procedure is a great option to get a subtle lift on a more temporary basis.

Our 8 point lift procedure is known as the non-surgical facelift or fluid lift. The procedure uses dermal filler injected as precise points on the face aiming to target the key areas of the mid-face to lift, contour and revitalise the whole mid and lower face. The results can last up to 18 months and there is no downtime associated with the procedure. In order to maintain the results from the 8 point lift then regular treatment is advised but over time patients may feel they need less product, less frequently to achieve the results they want.

Consultations for the 8 Point Lift procedure are available at our London Harley Street, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and Northampton clinics with one of dermal filler experts;

Thread Lift

A thread lift procedure is a great way to reduce the appearance of mild sagging jowls giving you a more rejuvenated V-shape appearance to your face. We offer two types of thread lifts at The Private Clinic; Silhouette Soft and PDO Threads, both of these treatments offer great results and it will be at the aesthetic doctor or nurse’s discretion over which one is used. During a thread lift procedure threads will be inserted into your face to help lift and tighten the lower face reducing the appearance of jowls, the threads also increase collagen production giving an overall more youthful and lifted appearance. A thread lift takes around 30 minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic. The results are instant however some swelling and bruising should be expected for at least 48 hours but this can take up to a week to clear completely. The results of a thread left are anywhere from 18 months to 2 years depending on the type of threads used and areas treated.

Thread lift consultations are in London Harley Street, Birmingham and Northampton with one of our thread lift experts;

  • Dr Hanson MBBS MSc MBCAM. GMC Number: 6136433
  • Dr Rosa Santa Cruz MD, PhD. GMC Number: 7441197
  • Dr Richard Brighton-Knight MBChB. GMC Number: 4196903

Ultherapy

Ultherapy is a non-surgical skin tightening procedure that has been FDA-cleared for treatment of the face, neck and décolletage. The treatment uses micro-focused ultrasound with visualisation (MFU-V) energy which stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin to reverse the visible signs of ageing. The treatment is able to significantly lift to the layers of tissue which other laser treatments are not FDA cleared to perform and many celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Christie Brinkley and Kim Kardashian have all used Ultherapy for a neck lift. Treatment time can take as little as 30 minutes and most patients will only need one Ultherapy treatment. There is no downtime and although the results are gradual taking 3-6 months to see the full results from treatment – the results from Ultherapy can last over a year.

Ultherapy treatment is available at our clinics in London Marylebone and Stoke Poges in Bucks

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non surgical fat reduction treatment also known as fat freezing. The treatment uses controlled cooling and is able to target and destroy only the fat cells being treated. CoolSculpting is suitable to use on the chin area and offers gradual fat removal with no downtime. Patients can see noticeable results within 8-12 weeks and the treated fat cells are permanently destroyed. Find out more about fat removal for the chin with CoolSculpting in our blog here.

CoolSculpting Fat Freezing treatments are available at our clinics in Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, London Marylebone & Stoke Poges, Bucks Clinics.

From bingo wings to love handles & underarm fat… How can you remove stubborn areas of fat?

August 25, 2016 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

The summer can be a tough time for anyone with body woes – showing areas of skin and various parts of the body that would normally be safely hidden under layered clothing.

It is often a time of year that many people start diets and healthy lifestyle regimes hoping to improve on those body woes in time for their summer holiday, because a strappy top is one thing… a bikini – the horror!

But what about those of us who have been eating healthily and exercising at every spare moment but yet these little stubborn pockets of fat just don’t seem to budge?

MicroLipo is a relatively new procedure for the UK and is available at The Private Clinic.

Read Lynne's experience of having MicroLipo to her arms.

“I can finally look at pictures of myself in a sleeveless dress without mentally drawing of ring of shame around my triceps.” Lynn Hyland, Journalist, Sunday Mirror*

MicroLipo can treat a number of problem areas including the abdomen, love handles, thighs, male chest and arms. One of the top advantages of MicroLipo compared to normal liposuction treatment is the downtime with many patients returning back to their daily routines almost immediately, although we do recommend waiting 48hrs before returning to work and avoiding exercise for at least a week.

The procedure itself uses very small microcannulas, due to their size they are not as quick as removing fat compared to traditional liposuction cannulas but it does allow for smoother and uniform results.

The procedure starts with injecting the areas to be treated with a diluted local anaesthesia which will cause them to become swollen and feel very firm.

Lynne_Hyland_tumescent_microlipo_liposuction_before_treatment_and_after_results

You may be thinking “I came here to remove the fat not put it on?!” but do not panic . The swelling is intentional as it helps to separate the fat cells from the other surrounding tissue. The fat is then removed using microcannualas.

Compared to traditional liposuction the diameter size of the microcannualas used for MicroLipo is much smaller measuring less than 3mm. These smaller cannulas mean that the risk of any irregularities and depressions in the skin are reduced, resulting in smother and equal results.

Immediately after the procedure you may notice a change immediately but the real results won’t be fully visible until at least 3-4 weeks post procedure.

As the name suggests, the downtime for MicroLipo is relatively… micro!

You will be looking at 48hours max before you are able to return to work and everyday activities comfortably, although probably best to wait a week before starting back on the exercise regime.

Despite the small downtime, it is worth noting that the full recovery time can take a little longer so this procedure is not recommended for those looking to remove areas of fat before their summer holiday this year… but perhaps planning ahead for the future or maybe for that post-holiday bulge!

Before and after MicroLipo to the thighs

Of course results for this procedure all heavily rely on you leading a healthy lifestyle and this procedure is by no means a quick fix. A healthy lifestyle paired with good nutrition and exercise will ensure that your results are maintained. If you gain any weight, it will affect the surrounding areas.

MicroLipo: A new lease on life for Lipoedema sufferers

March 3, 2016 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

As if ladies didn’t already have a hard enough time managing their body image, there’s a condition that almost exclusively occurs in women and causes fat cells to excessively build up in the lower part of the body. Researchers have so far been unable to discover what causes Lipoedema, although a hormonal and genetic link is suspected.

It’s an incredibly frustrating condition because most nurses and doctors haven’t been trained to recognise its symptoms – making it all the more difficult to be properly diagnosed. Patients can be made to feel particularly at the end of their wits when being told that their excess fat is their ‘own fault’ – since dieting and exercise do absolutely nothing to reduce the build-up.

Worse still – there’s no cure.

Nevertheless, there is one treatment that effectively reduces excess fatty tissue: MicroLipo.

What is Lipoedema?

The longer Lipoedema is allowed to advance, the more visible its symptoms become. Most notably, fatty tissue will accrue in your legs and buttocks, but without affecting the feet. In less common cases the arms can also be affected, although once again, the hands are left unaffected.

Lipoedema stages 1-3 out of five.
Lipoedema stages 1-3 out of five.

The lower body will usually become disproportionally enlarged and will create a ‘band-like’ or ‘bracelet’ effect around the ankles, although both legs tend to grow to the same extent and at the same time.

Other symptoms experienced in the affected areas include bruising easily, being tender to the touch, feeling soft, cold or ‘doughy’, as well as having small broken veins under the skin.

Treating Lipoedema in the UK

Since being diagnosed can pose such a challenge to Lipoedema sufferers, starting to manage the condition is often delayed and the options are limited.

Regular, low-impact exercises such as swimming and cycling are recommended to increase lymph drainage to help reduce fluid retention while a healthy diet will stop you from gaining weight, although please note that being overweight or obese isn’t directly linked to the condition. Maintaining a healthy diet will simply make the condition more manageable.

Wearing compression garments and having Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massages are also useful and effective ways of dealing with the condition on a long-term basis.

What can MicroLipo do for sufferers?

It’s important to understand off the bat that MicroLipo is not a cure for Lipoedema. However, it is currently the only way to successfully reduce the accumulated fatty tissue and the results can last at least 15 years if post-operative advice is adhered to.

Surgical Liposuction isn’t an option because it’s imperative to not cause any trauma to lymph vessels, as this could worsen the condition and lead to the development of one called Lipo-Lymphedema, which causes the body’s tissue to swell.

Our esteemed Dr Puneet Gupta is part of a handful of people in Europe able to perform MicroLipo, during which he uses micro-cannulas, no bigger than 0.3mm in diameter, to gently suck out the build-up.

Before and after MicroLipo treatment for Lipoedema.

Before that, the affected areas are injected with a tumescent liquid (a type of anaesthetic), which works to isolate fat cells so that they can easily be extracted afterwards. The incisions Dr Gupta makes in order to insert the cannulas are so small that they don’t require any subsequent stitches and the slow suction process dramatically limits any trauma to the surrounding tissue.

Several sessions may be required to treat all of the limbs effectively, but Dr Gupta has said that the tears of joy patients often experience following the treatment, give him the greatest job satisfaction.

The Private Clinic

Having been trained by, and having worked under Dr Jeffrey Klein – the inventor of MicroLipo – Dr Gupta can deliver the kind of results that very few can. The procedure may not present a cure, but the results can genuinely be life-changing. Dr Puneet Gupta is an expert in his field and you can expect to benefit from the full extent of his knowledge.

MicroLipo for treatment of Lipoedema is available at our London, Harley Street clinic.

MicroLipo in the News: The Daily Mail investigate our Fat Removal procedure

September 30, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

The Daily Mail’s FEMAIL team investigate MicroLipo – a fat removal and body contouring procedure popular in the US but only available at The Private Clinic of Harley Street  here in the UK. Here’s what they had to say about their transformation: MicroLipo in the Daily Mail.

What is MicroLipo?

MicroLipo is a minimally invasive fat removal procedure that gets its name from the microcannulas (medical tubes) that are carefully inserted into the body to gently remove unwanted body fat. Tumescent anaesthetic is used to completely numb the area with the added benefit of firming and separating the fat cells from the surrounding tissue for easier removal. Patients can be completely transformed and return to work very quickly, and daily life very soon.

Bra Strap Lipo: MicroLipo to tackle unwanted body fat in The Daily Mail

June 3, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

We featured in the Daily Mail today all about Bra Strap Lipo and how it’s helping lots of women look and feel better via MicroLipo at The Private Clinic of Harley Street.  Getting rid of unwanted and stubborn body fat is now much easier and much less invasive with MicroLipo. We thought we would share with you some info about MicroLipo in a blog post.

Bra Strap Lipo: The Private Clinic of Harley Street in The Daily Mail (03/06/13) about MicroLipo by Dr. Puneet Gupta
Bra Strap Lipo: The Private Clinic of Harley Street in The Daily Mail (03/06/13) about MicroLipo by Dr. Puneet Gupta

Developed by wunderkind Dr. Jeffrey Klein, MicroLipo has taken the cosmetic industry by the love handles and well, eliminated them. MicroLipo offers a minimally invasive alternative to surgical liposuction – helping people to look and feel better as well as getting them back to their daily activities quickly.

Our Dr. Puneet Gupta remains the only doctor in Europe certified to perform the KleinLipo technique and has treated many hundreds of patients, ridding them of unwanted body fat swiftly in this refined and specialised fat removal body contouring treatment.

MicroLipo can be used to eliminate fat in most places on the body including:

  • Chin
  • Back
  • Breasts
  • Chest
  • Bingo wings
  • Love handles
  • Stomach
  • Inner thighs
  • Knees

MicroLipo gets its name from the tiny microcannulas (the smallest is a mere 0.9mm wide and the biggest is only 3mm wide) employed to target specific pockets of fat. The procedure can remove up to 3.5l or 4% of the body’s total weight, leaving you with an improved and more defined body shape. The microcannulas help to improve the quality of the results, with smoother and more uniform results all round.

During the procedure, with no need for a general anaesthetic, a tumescent anaesthetic is injected into the pocket of fat, resulting in swelling that helps to separate the fat cells from the surrounding tissue. The area doubles in size to help make fat removal easier and more targeted, resulting in far less trauma to surrounding tissue. This helps to minimise further swelling and any bruising after the procedure.

There is very little downtime associated with the procedure because it’s minimally invasive. After a few weeks you will be begin to see the full results as the body returns to normal completely – revealing the body shape you have been after.

Body Fat

Each body is different and whilst some are fortunate enough to have low body fat percentage, whatever they eat or however much they exercise, many of us struggle to shift unwanted body fat. Thanks to genetics, many of us are predisposed to store body fat more visibly and more easily than others in common areas like the underarm, thighs and waist. The great news is that you can do something about it.
