February 25, 2020 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Male chest reduction surgery is commonly requested by men who feel their chest, nipples or areolas are too large or puffy. This is most often a result of a condition known as Gynaecomastia which causes men’s breasts to swell and become larger than normal. Gynaecomastia is a result of a hormone imbalance or testosterone and oestrogen which can be caused by a number of factors such as age, weight, medication and other health conditions.

In most cases, diet and exercise is not enough to reduce the appearance of Gynaecomastia and many need a surgical procedure to reduce the fat and often remove the glandular tissue from behind the nipple too.

At The Private Clinic we have a team of specialist male breast reduction surgeons who are very experienced in getting the best results from gynaecomastia surgery.

How to get rid of moobs?

January 30, 2020 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

The appearance of man boobs affects around 15% of adult men in the UK and is caused when excess fat develops in a man’s breast area.

Moobs are most often caused by a condition known as gynecomastia. This is when there is an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue growth which is caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone.

In other cases, moobs are caused by pseudogynecomastia which is a result of excess stubborn male chest fat that is often hard to reduce with diet and exercise alone.

How to get rid of moobs?

There are lots of ways that can help to reduce the appearance of moobs including;

  • Chest exercises
  • Diet
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
  • Avoid any illegal drugs

But as with many of the patients we see in our clinics, if you have true gynecomastia – these are often not enough to completely reduce the appearance of moobs. In this case, we have a variety of procedures to help you achieve the male chest you have been looking for.

Vaser Liposuction

Vaser Liposuction is very effective on providing a male chest reduction procedure for men who are suffering from gynaecomastia or man boobs. It is a much less invasive option than surgical removal but can provide instant and effective results in the majority of cases.

MicroLipo

Microlipo uses a Microcannula Technique which is also ideal for male breast reduction. Cannulas less than 3 mm in diameter are used to remove the fat, which means there is less risk of irregularities and depressions in the skin compared to regular liposuction.

Surgical Liposuction

If you have pseudogynecomastia then you are most likely well-suited for treatment with liposuction alone. There will be minimal excess skin following treatment, and this will proceed to shrink after surgery and re-shape over the pectoralis muscles during the healing process.

Surgical liposuction is more invasive procedure than Vaser Lipo and MicroLipo, but it is the best option for those who have a large amount of fat to be extracted. Surgical liposuction is performed under general anaesthetic and you may be required to stay overnight.

Surgical Removal

If you have gynecomastia then as well as the removal of excess fat, you may also need to have the glandular tissue surgically removed from the chest area to stop the appearance of moobs from reoccurring. This is performed as a small surgical procedure at the same time as your vaser lipo, micro lipo or surgical liposuction treatment.

How much does pseudogynecomastia or gynecomastia surgery cost?

Prices for male chest reduction start from £4,900. You will be given an accurate quote following your consultation.

The doctor’s experience and advanced liposuction techniques are key things required to achieve the desired results from male chest reduction surgery. The Private Clinic have performed the highest number of minimally invasive liposuction treatments in the UK. We were the first to introduce VASER and VASER High definition to the UK, as such our doctors have unmatched experience when it comes to body contouring. Safety is our number one priority. Make sure to go to a qualified and highly experienced doctor to avoid disappointments.

How to Get Rid of Puffy Nipples in Men

November 28, 2019 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Puffy nipples are a common symptom of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is a condition which causes male breasts to swell and appear larger than normal. It is most common on teenage boys and older men, but it can occur at any time.

Why Do Some Males Have Breast Enlargement?

The cause of gynecomastia is down to an imbalance of testosterone and oestrogen. Oestrogen is what causes breast tissue to grow, although all men naturally have a certain amount of oestrogen they usually have a higher level of testosterone which stops growth of breast tissue.

The cause of the hormonal imbalance is a little trickier to diagnose as there are a variety of reasons for this to occur including;

  1. Age – As men age, they produce less testosterone.
  2. Puberty – During puberty, the hormone levels in males can vary.
  3. Weight Gain – Being overweight can cause gynecomastia as it can result in oestrogen levels increasing which causes breast tissue to grow and the excess weight will exaggerate the appearance of this.
  4. Medication – Certain medications have gynecomastia as a side effect. These include medicine for heart disease and anti-ulcer medication.
  5. Health Condition – There are some health conditions that can cause gynecomastia including liver disease and kidney failure.
  6. Drugs – Recreational drugs such as cannabis and steroids can cause gynecomastia to develop.
  7. Birth – It is common for newborn baby boys to appear to have gynaecomastia as oestrogen is passed from mother to baby. In most cases this will disappear after a few weeks.

How to treat gynecomastia and puffy nipples

If gynecomastia is the cause of your puffy nipples then you will most likely need surgery to treat them. Although losing weight, eating healthy and exercising may help to reduce the appearance of an enlarged male chest, it is not likely to be effective in removing puffy nipples.

Surgical options for gynecomastia at The Private Clinic include;

Vaser Liposuction

Vaser Liposuction is a non-surgical liposuction technique that is performed with local anaesthetic and sedation. The procedure uses ultrasound energy to liquefy fat cells prior to removal which is then done through a gentle suction process.

Surgical Removal

In more severe cases of gynecomastia or enlarged male breast, the glandular tissue will need to be removed from behind the nipple. Surgical removal of these will need to be carried out under general anaesthetic but liposuction can also be performed at the same time to contour the chest.

Male Chest Reduction for Gynecomastia. Surgical removal of breast tissue and liposuction performed with circumferential areola incisions. After photos taken 7 months post-op.

Coolsculpting for Gynecomastia

CoolSculpting or fat freezing can be an effective treatment for gynecomastia. A small applicator will be applied to the chest area which then freezes the fatty tissue underneath the skin. Over time, your body will break down the fat and it will be processed naturally through the body. The non surgical fat reduction procedure can take as little as 30 minutes per area and there is little to no downtime. CoolSculpting for Gynecomastia is best suited to patients whose male breasts are largely composed of fatty tissue as this treatment will not have any effect on glandular tissue.

Causes of Man Boobs and how we can help

March 4, 2019 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

More than 30% of men experience enlarging breasts at some point in their lives. Medically known as gynecomastia, man boobs can appear when an excess of glandular tissue is produced which causes the appearance of a more prominent chest.

When we see patients seeking male chest reduction, they often ask what has caused gynecomastia to occur. Below are some possible reasons;

Age

Gynecomastia is not specific to a certain age range, it can occur at any time. When men start puberty, their chests undergo a period of development and swelling of the chest in this area is common. For many, this will gradually decrease over time but for others it will stay which is called idiopathic gynecomastia. Idiopathic gynecomastia is when there is an imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen.

For men that are getting older, they do also become more likely to have gynecomastia as this is when their testosterone levels start to change again which can result in excess oestrogen being produced again which causes the breasts to grow.

Hair Loss Drugs and Other Medications

Hair loss drugs such as Propecia or Finasteride are often associated with gynecomastia. Hair loss drugs essentially work to cause a decrease in the conversion of testosterone to a really powerful form of testosterone, called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This then reduces the levels of testosterone causing an imbalance.

Steroids

Illegal testosterone medications that are often used in the body building circuit are often a common culprit for the development of gynecomastia. Known collectively as anabolic steroids, these drugs are synthetic versions of testosterone which often covert to estrogen which again, causes that imbalance which encourages male breast growth. The issue with ‘performance-enhancing drugs’ is that there often is not a set guideline on how much should be taken like there is with medication so many end up taking too much which can lead to side effects such as gynecomastia.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Testosterone Replacement Therapy is a great treatment for improving muscle mass, energy levels, sexual performance and your mood but a side effect of this can result in temporary male breast growth. Men have an enzyme within them called aromatase which converts testosterone into a form of estrogen. This means that although you can be increasing the testosterone levels this can also cause an increase in estrogen levels. In most cases, any breast growth that occurs during Testosterone Replacement Therapy is only temporary and should only cause a small increase which will recede in a few weeks. In some cases your GP may suggest stopping treatment for a month or two to allow the breast tissue to return to normal.

Obesity

In the majority of cases, excess fat that causes male chest prominence is usually nothing to do with the glandular tissue and is instead diagnosed as Pseudo gynecomastia which is just when there is an excess amount of fat in the male chest area. Many patients are able to treat this with diet and exercise but in some cases fat in this area can be stubborn and in which case treatments like liposuction can help to remove the fat resulting in a flatter chest.gynecomastia causes

However, in some cases – if a patient is carrying a large amount of weight, their leptin levels can be high. High leptin levels can trick your brain into thinking it is food-deprived which is known as leptin resistance. This then can result in signals being sent to the brain to conserve energy which results in a decrease in certain hormones such as the luteinizing hormone (LH) and the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) which are responsible for sperm and testosterone production. As the production of testosterone decreases, the production of estrogen increases which then causes gynecomastia.

Plant Oils and Natural Grooming Products

Certain plant oils can have ingredients within them that have estrogen-like properties. You do not have to ingest oils as just applying them to the skin can result in them being absorbed and entering the bloodstream. So even if you were not using them directly on the chest area, over time it will eventually make it to the breasts. We often ask patients in consultation if they have started using anything new grooming wise in the past 3-6 months and to try stopping that to see if it has an impact on the appearance of gynecomastia.

Severe Liver or Kidney Disease

If a patient is suffering from any type of serious illness it can cause gynecomastia to develop as during these times your body does not produce as much testosterone causing that imbalance.gynecomastia surgery uk

Liver disease in particular causes a disruption in protein synthesis which basically results in a sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) being produced which sticks to testosterone. This means that patients with liver disease will not only have their testosterone production decreased due to being ill but the increase in SHBG will also bind the limited amount of testosterone that they do have meaning there will not be enough to do its job properly and often estrogen will start to take over. This is of course very rare, and gynecomastia should not be classed as a symptom of liver disease and if you were to be suffering you will have noticed this far sooner than it takes for any sign of gynecomastia to appear.

Undetected Tumours

Some types of tumours can affect your hormone production. This often includes pituitary or testicular tumours. If your body is unable to produce enough testosterone or produce too much estrogren then this imbalance can result in gynecomastia. Other tumours such as lung tumours can start the production of a hormone called Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) which acts like the Luteinizing hormone (LH) and increases testosterone production but also stimulates the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. The imbalance and increase in estrogen can cause gynecomastia.

Male Chest Reduction at The Private Clinic

At The Private Clinic we offer a variety of treatments to help treat gynecomastia or Pseudo gynecomastia and reduce the physical appearance of ‘man boobs’.

Each patient that comes to see us will be evaluated individually to see what’s best for him; his medical history has to be evaluated and an ultrasound scan should be performed in certain cases to rule out any lumps or malignancies which, although extremely rare, can still occur even in male breast tissue.

We offer

  • Vaser Lipo – Vaser liposuction is a minimally invasive treatment for gynecomastia that does not require general anaesthetic or an overnight stay.
  • Micro Lipo – Microlipo gets its name from the tiny size of the cannulas used to extract the fat The small size of the cannulas is particularly good for targeting smaller body areas such as the male chest. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and many patients are able to return to work within a week.
  • Surgical Liposuction – Most patients, moderately overweight and with so-called pseudo-gynecomastia are well-suited for treatment with surgical liposuction alone. Surgical liposuction is more invasive than the other two forms but best for those who have a large amount of fat to be extracted.

Dealing with Gynecomastia and self confidence

January 28, 2019 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

Self-confidence and self-esteem are key statements that can help to define the way that a person feels about themselves and can really affect how you are in your career and in personal relationships. For men dealing with gynecomastia which is abnormal breast enlargement, it can become a big impact on their life.

Men that come to us looking for options describe struggling with a range of things from physical intimacy to sporting activities – all of which can be emotionally challenging and embarrassing.

It is a common misunderstanding that the enlargement of a male chest is down to being overweight. Excess weight can cause gynecomastia to be more noticeable but the majority of men with gynecomastia have already tried rigorous exercise and diets in hopes of changing the size of their breasts but in true gynecomastia, this is not always an effective solution.

True gynecomastia is when overly large male breasts are caused by an excess production of glandular tissue in this area. The extra tissue build up usually occurs during puberty due to the hormonal changes. For many, this gradually resolves itself on its own usually 1-2 years following the end of puberty. But for some, this does not happen and it is then that you would require direct removal of the tissue to help men reduce the appearance of male breasts and improve their overall chest contour.

Gynecomastia can occur in both or just one side of the chest and common symptoms include tenderness and swelling of the breast tissue. Other causes of the condition could be diet, aging, hormones, obesity and the use of some medications or steroids.

Many men choose not to seek medical help with gynecomastia because being able to show someone their chest can be challenging. Our team here at The Private Clinic are very understanding of the condition and treat all of our patients with dignity and respect. It is our aim to not only improve the appearance of the chest but to improve how you feel about yourself mentally too.

We have a range of gynecomastia procedures to offer those looking to reduce the size of their chest including;

Vaser Liposuction – Vaser liposuction for gynecomastia is one of our most popular options for male chest reduction. It is performed under local anaesthetic which means no overnight stay is required. The fat cells removed are permanently destroyed making it very unlikely they will occur in the same place again. Overall the treatment can help to give you a more sculpted and toned chest.

male chest reduction gynaecomastia before after photos

Micro Lipo – Micro lipo for gynecomastia is ideal for male chest reduction as it is often such as small area being treated. With those with only minor symptoms of gynecomastia this would be the best option as the smaller cannulas used reduces the risk of irregularities and depressions in the skin compared to regular liposuction.

gynecomastia liposuction male chest reduction before after photo

Surgical Liposuction Removal – Surgical liposuction for male breast reduction may be suggested to men who have a little more fat and tissue that may need to be removed. This is performed under general anaesthetic so you may be required to stay overnight but your surgeon will discuss this with you before you decide to book. Surgical liposuction does require a longer recovery period but this will only be suggested if the surgeon feels that the results from micro or vaser lipo alone would not give you the results that you desire.

Male Chest Reduction Before and After Photos

Patient Alex had recently lost 4 stone and despite this huge achievement, he was still feeling unhappy about the appearance on his body, his chest in particular. As he lost weight from other parts of his body, he noticed that his chest was not reducing in size and that it was becoming more noticeable as the rest of him was becoming slimmer and more toned. Alex found out he was suffering with a condition called Gynecomastia and began his research to seek medical advice to help him reduce the size of his chest. Alex had vaser liposuction with The Private Clinic to reduce the size of his chest and is overjoyed with the results.

10 Facts about Male Chest Reduction Surgery

December 10, 2018 by Rebecca Giffen Leave a Comment

It has been reported that at least 30% of males are affected by gynecomastia during their life. Also known as man boobs, gynecomastia can cause men to feel self-conscious about their chest often avoiding wearing certain types of clothing and activities like swimming where they are required to bear their chest. Your GP is a good place to start should you suspect that you may have gynecomastia but unfortunately getting treatment for this on the NHS can be very difficult and many patients find themselves going privately to put an end to their discomfort.

Male breast reduction surgery is the most effective known treatment for gynecomastia.

If you are seeking male breast reduction then it is most likely that you have a condition known as Gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is when the breast tissue in men becomes enlarged. It can be caused by genetics, certain medications or hormonal changes and males of any age can develop it.

Gynecomastia has 4 main characteristics.

Gynecomastia can easily be identified in men who have excess localised fat in the chest area often with an increased amount of breast skin too. Sufferers may also notice an increase in glandular tissue giving the chest a puffy appearance and that it can affect one or both breasts.

You are likely to be a good candidate for male chest reduction surgery.

The majority of patients that visit us for male chest reduction are suitable for surgery as long as you are over 18 years of age and the condition can’t be corrected through alternative medical treatments. You must also be healthy with no pre-existing medical conditions that can impair healing. You must be physically healthy and at your ideal weight. We also advise patients to refrain from smoking before, after and during the recovery of the procedure.

Excess fat and glandular tissue can be removed during the procedure.

In some cases the chest may have an excess amount of glandular tissue that will need to be removed to achieve the best result and less risk of gynecomastia reoccurring. This can be achieved through surgical liposuction and your surgeon will be able to discuss the best option for you.

To ensure your procedure goes smoothly we recommend that you;

Stop smoking before your procedure, avoid excessive sun exposure, stop taking blood thinning medication or supplements, book time off work, let your surgeon know if you become unwell in the weeks leading up to your scheduled procedure, ensure you have travel arrangements to get you to and from the hospital and make sure that you have been measured up for any post-surgical garments.

Initial recovery from male chest reduction surgery can take 5-10 days.

You will have an initial period of recovery where you will expected to rest and wear any dressings, bandages and compression garments as advised by your surgeon. You may experience swelling and bruising during this stage and may need to take pain medication to manage any discomfort. In some cases a drain may be used to remove any excess blood or fluid from the incisions. Vaser liposuction will allow for a quicker recovery than surgical liposuction, patients usually only need to take 1-2 days off work depending on what their job role involves. You will still be required to wear a compression garment for 3 weeks and refrain from heavy lifting and any other strenuous activities. Surgical liposuction may require you to take a week off work and to wear your garment and avoid exercise for around 4 weeks post procedure. In both cases, after 6 weeks you should start to be able to see the final results but full recovery can take up to 6 months.

Results from Male Chest Reduction surgery are permanent.

As with many surgical procedures, the results from male chest reduction surgery are meant to be permanent however certain lifestyle factors can alter the results. An excessive increase or decrease in weight can cause results to change and certain medications or supplements can trigger gynecomastia to appear again.

Even male chest reduction surgery had its risks.

All surgical procedures come with risks and even though male chest reduction is designed to treat gynecomastia it still has some risks and side effects such as;

Bleeding, scarring, infection, chest asymmetry, blood clots, anaesthesia related risks, changes to nipple sensation and irregular chest contour or shape.

You may have Pseudogynecomastia not gynecomastia.

Before you are considered for surgery, your surgeon will want to assess you to ascertain your suitability for surgery. In some cases, where males think they have gynecomastia, may actually have Pseudogynecomastia which is when the appearance of male breasts are just down to fatty deposits and not glandular tissue. In most cases, a routine of regular exercise and healthy eating will be able to reduce the appearance of pseudogynecomastia but for stubborn areas of fat vaser liposuction can be used to improve the appearance of the chest.
