Breast implant removal or replacement: The answers

BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL REPLACEMENT

Breast implant surgery is one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery and many who are considering the procedure may wonder why anyone would want to remove or replacement their implants that they have so carefully chosen prior to surgery.
There are a lot of reasons why patients may feel unhappy about their implants to choose to remove them. Reasons why you want to have your implants removed or replaced can range to personal feelings about the implants to medical reasons.

Why would you have your Breast implants removed or replaced?

  • Capsular Contraction is a risk of breast implant surgery. In severe cases it can cause the implant to become firm and distorted causing a change in appearance to the breast.
  • Another risk of implants is rupture or deflation. This can also cause a dramatic change in appearance to your breast augmentation results.
  • In rare cases breast implants can sink below the natural breast crease which can result in an unnatural appearance. This is often referred to as ‘double bubble’ or ‘bottoming out’.
  • The PIP Implant health scare in 2012 caused a lot of patients to question the integrity of their implants. The Private Clinic never used PIP implants but we have removed a lot of PIP implants from patients who had their breast augmentation procedures elsewhere. We have also carried out many PIP implant removal and breast implant replacement.
  • As time progresses patients can often change their mind about the size of their implants. Trends are changing all the time and many patients decide that they wish to go bigger, smaller or simply want to remove their implants of their own decision.

At The Private Clinic we are able to offer a range of treatment options for patients who are thinking about removing or replacing their implants. The best place to start is with a consultation with one of our specialist breast surgeons who will be able to listen to your concerns about your implants and go through what treatment options are available for you.

My breast implants are 10 years old; do I have to have them removed?

10 years is the average lifetime for breast implants but if you are not experiencing any issues with them then there is no reason that you should rush to have them removed or replaced. We do recommend that you make an appointment with your surgeon however to discuss the implants and they may suggest having a scan to assess the condition of the implants.

Should I have a breast implant removal or replacement?

Choosing whether to have your breast implants removed or replaced is a decision that only you will be able to make and it will depend on what your expectations are post-procedure.
If you are happy with the appearance of your breast implants but want to have them removed due to a fault then a replacement would be the recommended options as that way your results will not change significantly after your procedure.
However if you feel your implants are too large, and just want a more natural appearance to your bust then it is best to have the implants removed.
Before making a decision we recommend that you have a consultation with one of our specialist breast surgeons who will not only be able to go through the different treatment options but also be able to give you a realistic expectations of what results you are able to achieve.

What are my options if I want to have my breast implants removed?

A breast removal procedure involves removing the implant but not replacing it with a new one. Generally, patients can expect to return to their original breast size after having implants removed however if you have had large implants removed then your skin may have stretched which can cause the breast to sag. Many patients find that over time their skin retracts back but others may be recommended to consider a breast uplift or breast auto augmentation procedure to help improve the appearance of the bust following the removal of the implant.
A breast uplift will help to provide a more lifted appearance but a breast auto augmentation procedure works to reconstruct the bust by using the existing breast tissue to recreate the appearance of a breast implant.

Do I have to see the surgeon who originally did my breast augmentation procedure?

It is not essential that you see your original surgeon however if this is an option then it would definitely be worth a consultation with them. If you are unable to return to the surgeon who originally performed your breast augmentation procedures then many of our specialist breast surgeons would be happy to see you.
If you are choosing to see a different surgeon then you should try and know the size and type of your current implants and any other relevant information that may help your new surgeon create an appropriate treatment plan for you. Your patient notes can be requested from your previous surgeon.

Can my implants be removed and replaced in one procedure?

The removal and replacement of your breast implants will be performed at the same time. The only time where they may not is if there is a complication such as an infection in which case the implants will be removed and then you will be required to wait 3 months for the infection to fully clear before any new implants are inserted.

Will my recovery time be the same as my breast augmentation procedure?

Many patients find that their recovery time for removal or replacement is actually slightly better than their original breast enlargement procedure. This is because your skin and breast tissue has already been stretched. If you are having your implants replaced then we do advise that you follow the same aftercare as your originally breast augmentation surgery such as taking 2 weeks off work and avoiding strenuous activity for 6 weeks.
