“When you sleep on your back there is increased vibration from the tongue” says Dr Yves Kamami, a surgeon who treats snorers at The Private Clinic on Harley Street in London. “Sleep on your side if you can.”

3. Breathe through your nose

According to Kamami, breathing through the mouth when you sleep means you are more likely to snore. “It causes the soft palate and the uvula at the back of the throat to vibrate, causing a loud snore,” he says. “When you breathe through the nose you enter a much deeper state of sleep.” A blocked nose can make this tricky – seek treatment if you suffer from a condition such as hayfever or sinusitis. “A simple laser procedure can also correct long-term problems with a blocked nose causing snoring,” Kamani says. Losing weight helps, he says. “When you are overweight your tongue is also bigger than usual, which exacerbates the snoring noise. For every 1kg of body weight lost, you reduce the size of your tongue by about 1g.”
