Uncovering the Reasons behind Keloids

KELOID SCARS

Characterised by highly visible hairless and shiny scars, keloids are a frustrating skin condition which normally occurs after trauma or surgery. Their most common occurrence is in those between 10-30 years old, and people with darker skin have been shown to be more susceptible than those who are paler. Apart from this, there is currently little understanding on why the condition occurs, though a recent study at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit has made a huge step toward finding out.
Comparing fresh keloid case studies with samples of unaffected skin, a team of researchers led by Dr. Lamont R Jones discovered previously unidentified genes that could be behind the scars’ formation. Of 152 keloid specific genes that were uncovered by the research team, 10 were found to demonstrate components crucial to their development. Experts believe this could be a huge progression in knowing more about the growths and Dr Jones commented that the findings can ‘further refine the screening process…in hopes of better understanding” why they form.
Whatever the reasoning, and despite them being harmless, many cite the emotional insecurities keloids bring as the real pain of living with them. And, while understanding their origins may still be a work in progress, there are treatment options available to rid those suffering from the irritating condition.
At The Private Clinic we offer two of the most effective keloid treatments, depending on how severe your case is. Smaller scars can be removed quickly and simply through a series of steroid injections, with most seeing success within 4-6 sessions. Larger keloids, meanwhile, are normally removed through surgery and a follow-up of postoperative steroid injections. Both treatments are simple and effective and can help transform the lives of those who are suffering. We are a centre of excellence for dermatology with one of the UK’s leading consultant dermatologists at the forefront of our work.
