In recent news article, Chrissy Teigen has been addressing her concerns over her implants. It is reported that she is feeling conflicted about going under the knife for further breast augmentation surgery after motherhood has left her implants ‘deflated’. See article here.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause changes in the size, shape and profile of breasts for patients with and without implants. Once you have finished breastfeeding the mammary glands within your breasts will shrink back to their former size however, in some cases sagging or stretched skin may become apparent.
We do see many patients come back to visit us once they have finished their family and are looking to restore their breasts to how they previously were before pregnancy or to just simply seeking to have them feeling perkier and more uplifted again. Patients who previously had implants before children may now be considering if to remove or replace their implants but are often fearful of the appearance of their breasts after the implants have been removed.
Chrissy Teigen’s concerns will resonate with many women who are keen to remove or replace their implants, but worry that the changes which occur over time (and potentially post-pregnancy and breastfeeding) will leave them looking worse once the implants are removed. Chrissy’s comments also mirror recent trends which have seen a rise in women seeking a more ‘natural’ approach to breast enhancement – either removing their implants altogether (as per Victoria Beckham and Pamela Anderson) or wanting to achieve an improved breast shape without using an implant at all.
At The Private Clinic, we offer the Breast Auto Augmentation procedure which is a specialised plastic surgery procedure that uses your own natural breast tissue to reshape and improve the shape of your breasts following the removal of breast implants. Unlike a standard breast uplift procedure, which only changes the position of the nipple and tightens the skin, or a normal breast augmentation which uses a breast implant to give the desired breast size and shape, The Private Clinic’s Auto-Augmentation technique uses the patients own natural breast tissue to reshape and enhance the shape of your breasts. It achieves this by relocating the breast tissue into the upper portion of the breast, to give the desired lifting and shaping effect, without the need for an implant.
“One of the main advantages of this ground-breaking procedure is that we can achieve that ‘perfect’ ratio of breast fullness without the volume or weight of an implant,” says Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Mr Adrian Richards. “For women considering implant removal, the prospect of a deflated, sagging appearance post procedure can be a significant concern, so with auto-augmentation we can maintain their breast shape, only implant-free.”

“In my opinion breast auto-augmentation might be the best solution for Chrissy Teigan. She, like many women had breast implants in her 20’s. Following children her body shape has changed and she has decided to have her implants removed but is worried how her bust might look after her implants are removed.
Our technique of implant removal and auto augmentation would remodel her breast and use her own tissue in place of her implants. For many women this a great solution if they decide to have their implants removed and are keen to maintain optiumum breast shape, contour and profile.” – Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Mr Adrian Richards.

There are many reasons why patients would consider getting their implants removed. These include a change in trends with many patients now favouring smaller implants other larger ones. Medical reasons for removing implants include capsular contracture and implant rupture and some patients just don’t want to have breast implants anymore.
When it comes to removing your breast implants, there are a number of things to consider but most importantly we ask patients to think about the end result and what they wish to achieve from surgery. Typically after removing implants your breasts usually return to how they appeared before surgery. But in some cases, breast sagging can occur, particularly patients who have had larger implants or implants that have been in place for a number of years.
We offer a wide range of options to patients who are considering breast implant removal. Our expert plastic surgeons will be able to help you decide which one is going to be best for you but to help you feel as informed as possible ahead of your consultation, see below for our breast implant removal options.
Breast Implant Removal with Breast Auto Augmentation
A breast auto-augmentation is a breast reconstruction procedure that uses your own natural breast tissue to essentially act as an implant. During a breast uplift, the skin is removed and the nipple is raised but the breast tissue is usually left untouched. A breast auto-augmentation instead relocates a portion of your breast tissue from the lower breast to the upper breast. This helps to change the entire shape of the bust giving the appearance of volume without the need for implants.
A breast auto-augmentation is a really effective procedure that only uses your natural breast tissue and it has a big advantage over implants in that it will only increase volume in the upper pole, no volume or weight will be added to the lower pole of the breasts. It may be difficult to replicate the same size your breasts were with implants, but it will be a close match.
An auto augmentation procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes around 2-4 hours to perform. Some patients may be required to stay overnight in the hospital but if not they will be discharged a few hours following their procedure once being deemed fit.
An Auto-augmentation is a specialist breast reconstruction surgery technique that only a select number of specialist breast surgeons are able to offer.
Breast Implant Removal
A breast implant removal procedure is pretty much explained in the title. In this procedure, your implant is removed from your breast pocket and no other procedures are performed. Breast implant removal procedures are performed under general anaesthetic and your surgeon will aim to remove the breast implant from the same incision where your implant was originally inserted. Each case will vary but the procedure on average will take 1-2 hours. Patients are not usually required to stay overnight following a breast implant removal procedure and many return home a few hours after the procedure once discharged by the surgeon.
Breast Implant Removal with Enbloc
An enbloc procedure is when the implant and capsule are removed from the breast pocket. This usually happens as standard if you have capsular contracture for example but an enbloc procedure can also be requested by anyone who is looking to have their implants removed.
In some cases an enbloc procedure may not be possible, this is usually when the capsule is very delicate and thin and the process of removing it could actually cause damage to surrounding vital tissues. In all breast implant removal cases, precautions are put in place to allow for proper healing including sterilising the remaining capsules.
Not all surgeons offer this procedure due to the additional risks so it is important to make your preference clear ahead of booking in for a consultation with your surgeon.
Breast Implant Replacement
If you are choosing to remove your implants in favour of implants of a different size then a breast implant and replacement procedure will be performed. This procedure is also great for patients who have experienced issues with their current implants and wish to replace them with new implants of the same size or different. This procedure takes out your existing implants and replaces them with implants that are either smaller, bigger or the same size as your current implants. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and your surgeon will aim to use the same incision that your original breast implants were inserted via. Recovery after a breast implant replacement is likely to be similar to your previous breast augmentation recovery.
Breast Implant Removal with Uplift
A breast implant removal procedure combined with a breast uplift procedure is a great option for patients who are likely to have sagging after their implants removed. The surgeon will remove your implant but then also remove any excess skin and relocate the nipple to a higher position to give the chest a more uplifted appearance. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and usually takes 2-3 hours and there will be some additional scarring usually a lollipop or anchor shaped scar where the uplift procedure has taken place. You will also have some additional recovery time similar to that of breast augmentation and some patients may be required to stay overnight at the hospital.

Breast implant surgery is one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery and many who are considering the procedure may wonder why anyone would want to remove or replacement their implants that they have so carefully chosen prior to surgery.
There are a lot of reasons why patients may feel unhappy about their implants to choose to remove them. Reasons why you want to have your implants removed or replaced can range to personal feelings about the implants to medical reasons.
Why would you have your Breast implants removed or replaced?
- Capsular Contraction is a risk of breast implant surgery. In severe cases it can cause the implant to become firm and distorted causing a change in appearance to the breast.
- Another risk of implants is rupture or deflation. This can also cause a dramatic change in appearance to your breast augmentation results.
- In rare cases breast implants can sink below the natural breast crease which can result in an unnatural appearance. This is often referred to as ‘double bubble’ or ‘bottoming out’.
- The PIP Implant health scare in 2012 caused a lot of patients to question the integrity of their implants. The Private Clinic never used PIP implants but we have removed a lot of PIP implants from patients who had their breast augmentation procedures elsewhere. We have also carried out many PIP implant removal and breast implant replacement.
- As time progresses patients can often change their mind about the size of their implants. Trends are changing all the time and many patients decide that they wish to go bigger, smaller or simply want to remove their implants of their own decision.
At The Private Clinic we are able to offer a range of treatment options for patients who are thinking about removing or replacing their implants. The best place to start is with a consultation with one of our specialist breast surgeons who will be able to listen to your concerns about your implants and go through what treatment options are available for you.

My breast implants are 10 years old; do I have to have them removed?
10 years is the average lifetime for breast implants but if you are not experiencing any issues with them then there is no reason that you should rush to have them removed or replaced. We do recommend that you make an appointment with your surgeon however to discuss the implants and they may suggest having a scan to assess the condition of the implants.
Should I have a breast implant removal or replacement?
Choosing whether to have your breast implants removed or replaced is a decision that only you will be able to make and it will depend on what your expectations are post-procedure.
If you are happy with the appearance of your breast implants but want to have them removed due to a fault then a replacement would be the recommended options as that way your results will not change significantly after your procedure.
However if you feel your implants are too large, and just want a more natural appearance to your bust then it is best to have the implants removed.
Before making a decision we recommend that you have a consultation with one of our specialist breast surgeons who will not only be able to go through the different treatment options but also be able to give you a realistic expectations of what results you are able to achieve.
What are my options if I want to have my breast implants removed?
A breast removal procedure involves removing the implant but not replacing it with a new one. Generally, patients can expect to return to their original breast size after having implants removed however if you have had large implants removed then your skin may have stretched which can cause the breast to sag. Many patients find that over time their skin retracts back but others may be recommended to consider a breast uplift or breast auto augmentation procedure to help improve the appearance of the bust following the removal of the implant.
A breast uplift will help to provide a more lifted appearance but a breast auto augmentation procedure works to reconstruct the bust by using the existing breast tissue to recreate the appearance of a breast implant.
Do I have to see the surgeon who originally did my breast augmentation procedure?
It is not essential that you see your original surgeon however if this is an option then it would definitely be worth a consultation with them. If you are unable to return to the surgeon who originally performed your breast augmentation procedures then many of our specialist breast surgeons would be happy to see you.
If you are choosing to see a different surgeon then you should try and know the size and type of your current implants and any other relevant information that may help your new surgeon create an appropriate treatment plan for you. Your patient notes can be requested from your previous surgeon.
Can my implants be removed and replaced in one procedure?
The removal and replacement of your breast implants will be performed at the same time. The only time where they may not is if there is a complication such as an infection in which case the implants will be removed and then you will be required to wait 3 months for the infection to fully clear before any new implants are inserted.
Will my recovery time be the same as my breast augmentation procedure?
Many patients find that their recovery time for removal or replacement is actually slightly better than their original breast enlargement procedure. This is because your skin and breast tissue has already been stretched. If you are having your implants replaced then we do advise that you follow the same aftercare as your originally breast augmentation surgery such as taking 2 weeks off work and avoiding strenuous activity for 6 weeks.
