The Problem

Prominent ears can have a huge effect on how we feel about our facial appearance often affecting self-esteem and confidence as well as being uncomfortable.

Earfold® is an alternative procedure for correcting prominent ears which is thought to affect 1-2% of the UK population.

A minimally invasive implant is used to correct the prominent ear/s and compared to an Otoplasty procedure the recovery time is significantly reduced.

The benefits;

  • Short Recovery time – There is no need for a full head bandage so you will be able to return to work and everyday life as soon as you feel comfortable to do so.
  • More Control – You will be able to choose the position of your ears before the treatment takes place.
  • Fast Treatment – An EarFold® procedure usually takes 20 minutes for both ears.
  • No need for anaesthetic – The procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic

Those with prominent ears are often unhappy with their appearance which can result in reduced self-confidence which affects their social life.

Earfold® is a small implant that is designed to reposition prominent ears quickly. The implant is curved so after it is inserted into your ear under local anaesthetic, it will spring into shape and help to correct the prominence of your ears by either creating or enhancing the anti-helical fold.

The Problem

Prominent ears can have a huge effect on how we feel about our facial appearance often affecting self-esteem and confidence as well as being uncomfortable.

Our Team

The Private Clinic has only the most experienced Surgeons, Doctors and Nurses in their respective fields, so you can be confident you are in safe hands.

At your consultation you will be able to decide together with your surgeon firstly, if you are suitable for the EarFold® implant and then secondly the best position for the implant to be able to achieve the desired outcome. Unlike a traditional otoplasty consultation, surgeons can physically demonstrate the outcome of surgery on your ears using a preFold positioning tool.

The positioning tool are made from the same material as the implant and can be placed onto your ear and moved to any position until you as the patient are happy with the location and how your ears look. This allows you to see what your ears will look like with the implants in place.

On the day of your procedure you will firstly make a final decision on the position of the implants which will then be marked onto your ears with a marker pen.

A drape will then be placed over your ear to create a sterile operating field. A local anaesthetic injection is then used to completely numb your ears. A small incision less that 10mm will be made at the edge of your ear and your Earfold® implants will be inserted into the pre-marked positions with a special introducer. Once inserted, the implants will immediately adopt a pre-set shape and create an anti-helical fold; this then reduces your ear prominence. The small incision will then be closed with two or three absorbable sutures and Steristrips™ are then used as dressing.

Earfold® is made from a highly elastic material called nitinol, which is widely used in medicine. It is then coated with 24-carat gold, to reduce visibility under your skin.

The Results

The results of an EarFold® procedure are instant with the position of your ears being altered so that they lie closer to your head.

Recovery / Downtime

After treatment you will be able to go home and will be given a short (3 days) prescription for antibiotics – this is a purely precautionary measure.  A review appointment will be made within 2-3 months post-treatment.

After the procedure your ears may feel numb for a while, this is because of the local anaesthetic and will wear off after 1-2 hours.

You may feel minor pain post-procedure but this should wear off after a couple of days and any swelling or bruising  will also fade over the week following the procedure.

You will be fine to shower and wash your hair post procedure however you may find your ears are a little more sensitive than normal so be gentle. We recommend that you avoid sleeping on your side for up to 4 weeks to avoid any extra pressure on your ears whilst they are healing.

It is best to avoid swimming and close contact sports for at least four weeks to allow the implants to settle. We also recommend that you avoid wearing earrings for two weeks post-procedure to avoid risk of infection.

Regardless of whether you’ve received local or general anaesthetic, you will need to arrange for someone to take you home and you may be asked to have someone to stay with you for the first day post-procedure. Before going home and during consultation, your surgeon and medical team will advise you on how to best aid your recovery.

Prices for the EarFold procedure can vary according to number of clips required and whether it is just the one ear or both that need the procedure.

Bilateral EarFold procedure prices start at £3,250 and Unilateral EarFold procedures start from £2,250.

We don’t follow a one-price-fits-all policy and prices are quoted on a case by case basis. You will be given an accurate quote for your requirements following your consultation.

Consultations with our Consultant Plastic Surgeons are £100.
