FUPA Liposuction

FUPA is an acronym for Fat Upper Pelvic Area or Fat Upper Pubic Area. This area is also known as the mons pubis.

The term FUPA became popular when Beyoncé discussed her post-pregnancy body and ‘mummy pouch’ in a Vogue interview back in 2018.

Whilst Beyonce expressed how she felt comfortable with this area of excess fat at the time, many others do not feel the same way and seek ways to reduce FUPA with methods such as liposuction.

What causes FUPA?

Fat accumulation in the upper pubic area can affect both men and women but women tend to notice it more. There are a range of factors that can contribute to excess fat in this area which include:

Genetics

FUPA or Mons Pubis fat is often caused by genetics with many having a genetic predisposition to store extra fat around the pelvic zone.

This genetic factor can make it hard to get rid of FUPA with just diet and exercise. For some, not even the most intense physical activity aimed to burn fat will help to remove FUPA fat.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is also another common cause of excess fat appearing across upper pelvic area. Postpartum hormonal shifts and weight changes can also additionally contribute to the enlargement of this area.

Ageing

As we age, our bodies naturally experience a change in skin elasticity and fat distribution. Sagging skin from ageing could result in fat accumulation in the upper pelvic area becoming more noticeable.

Hormones

Hormonal imbalances and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome can lead to weight gain and fat accumulation in specific areas, including the lower abdominal area and mons pubis.

Previous Surgery

Fat accumulation in the upper pelvic area can be common after other procedures such as abdominal liposuction or tummy tuck.

Best Ways to Get Rid of Pubic Fat

Due to its stubborn nature, FUPA may require specialised treatments for effective reduction.

Surgical procedures such as liposuction or monsplasty surgery may be recommended depending on the severity and individual circumstances.

Monsplasty

A monsplasty, also referred to as a pubic lift is a surgical procedure which aims to remove excess fat, tissue, and skin from the mons pubis area.

Excess skin and fat in this area can cause an unwanted aesthetic appearance. In severe cases, it can result in functional issues, such as difficulty when cleaning the area, which could lead to infection.

A pubic lift is usually performed under local anaesthetic and takes around one and a half hours to complete. Excess fat and tissue are cut out of the area and removed through incisions made in the mons pubis. The underlying tissue and muscles within the area can then be pulled up and tightened for a smoother and more sculpted appearance. The incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures.

A monsplasty is usually performed in combination with a tummy tuck procedure as fat in the upper pelvic region can often become more noticeable once fat and excess skin from the lower abdomen is removed.

Following a monsplasty procedure, most patients allow 1 week before returning to work. Bruising and swelling in the area is common and can last up to 2-3 weeks before settling.

Exercise and strenuous activity are best avoided until at least 4 weeks but ideally 6 weeks after the procedure.

The results of a monsplasty procedure are instant, but results are best seen after 6 weeks.

Mons Pubis Liposuction

Liposuction is best for patients who only have excess fat with a limited risk of sagging skin. No skin is removed for this procedure, just fat via a suction device.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic with sedation if required. Small incisions are made usually within the creases of the groin. The unwanted fat is then suctioned out of the area through a cannula, which is inserted via your incisions. Once the fat removal process is complete, sutures are used to close the incisions.

At The Private Clinic, our expert surgeons are experienced in multiple methods of liposuction. For the mons pubis, micro liposuction or vaser liposuction is likely to be recommended.

Micro liposuction is ideal for mons pubis fat reduction as the smaller cannulas make it a lot easier to treat smaller areas of the body. Vaser liposuction is also great for precision sculpting.

Recovery after mons pubis liposuction is quick with patients able to return to work within a week. A compression garment must be worn in the area for 2-6 weeks.

Summary

For those who struggle with extra fat in the upper pubic area, a Monsplasty or Liposuction can be a life-changing procedure. Patients can attain a more proportional and smoother lower abdomen contour by choosing a procedure that focuses on this particular area. But it’s crucial to approach any cosmetic procedure with thoughtful planning and reasonable expectations.

We recommend doing thorough research to ensure that the clinic or surgeon you select is experienced in the procedure and area of treatment.

Booking a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon or liposuction doctor is the best way to find out more about the treatment you are interested in as well as discussing your goals and finding out if you are suitable for this procedure.
