Thigh Lift (Thighplasty)
Restore smoother, firmer thighs with body contouring surgery
A thigh lift (thighplasty) is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to remove excess skin and reshape the thighs for a firmer, more proportionate appearance. It is particularly popular following significant weight loss or when ageing has caused the skin to lose elasticity.
If loose skin on your inner or outer thighs causes discomfort, affects your confidence, or makes it difficult to wear certain clothing, a thigh lift can dramatically improve the contour of your legs while helping reduce skin irritation caused by rubbing.
At The Private Clinic, our experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeons tailor every thigh lift procedure to your individual anatomy and aesthetic goals, creating natural-looking results with carefully planned incisions.

What is a Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift is a surgical body contouring procedure that removes excess skin and, where appropriate, excess fat from the thighs. The surgery tightens and reshapes the area to create smoother body contours that cannot be achieved through diet and exercise alone. Many patients choose a thigh lift after:
- Significant weight loss
- Pregnancy
- Natural ageing
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Previous bariatric surgery
In some cases, liposuction can be combined with a thigh lift to improve overall contouring. Liposuction removes excess fat, while the thigh lift addresses loose or sagging skin.
Benefits of Thigh Lift Surgery
A thigh lift can provide both cosmetic and practical benefits, including:
- Improved thigh shape and contour
- Firmer, tighter skin
- Removal of excess loose skin
- Reduced skin chafing and irritation
- Improved comfort when walking or exercising
- Better fit in clothing
- Increased body confidence
Am I suitable for a Thigh Lift?
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
- Have loose or sagging skin on the thighs
- Have maintained a stable weight for several months
- Are close to your ideal weight
- Are in good general health
- Do not smoke (or are willing to stop before surgery)
- Have realistic expectations about surgery and scarring
A thigh lift is not intended as a weight-loss procedure. It is designed to improve body contour once weight has stabilised.

The most commonly performed thigh lift.
Ideal for patients with loose skin affecting the upper inner thighs. Incisions are carefully hidden within the groin crease where possible.
Addresses loose skin affecting the outer thighs and hips.
Often performed as part of a lower body lift following major weight loss.
A Belt Lipoectomy, also known as a lower body lift is a combined procedure that removes excess skin from the abdomen, flanks, lower back and buttocks. This may be recommended if you have had extensive weight loss with excess skin across the lower torso.

The Procedure
Thigh Lift surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic.
The operation typically takes between 2–4 hours depending on the extent of surgery and whether liposuction is also performed.
During surgery your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will:
- Mark the treatment areas
- Remove excess skin
- Remove excess fat where appropriate
- Tighten the remaining tissue
- Carefully close the incisions
- Apply dressings and compression garments
Patients are usually able return home the same day or after an overnight stay depending on the extent of surgery.
Recovery and Support: 24/7 Aftercare
Recovery varies between patients, within the first week following surgery, patients can expect to experience swelling and bruising in the areas treated. You will need to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks to help with healing and control swelling. We encourage patients to rest but build up their activity levels with gentle walking.
Weeks 2–4
- Return to light daily activities
- Swelling gradually reduces
- Most patients return to desk-based work
Weeks 6–8
- Resume exercise
- Continue scar care
- Results become increasingly visible
Final results continue to improve over several months as swelling resolves

A Thigh Lift is considered to be an elective cosmetic procedure and in most cases, would not be funded by the NHS. In select cases, NHS funding may be considered but the eligibility criteria is strict and waiting times lengthy.
Thigh Lift surgery can remove a significant amount of excess skin from the thighs. The exact amount of skin removal will be dependent on the individual circumstances of the patients. Our experienced surgeons are very knowledgeable in excess skin removal procedures and will ensure all procedures are performed safely without compromising blood supply and lymphatic drainage.
Thigh Lift surgery is unlikely to eliminate Cellulite but it could improve the overall appearance.
The surgery is focused on removing excess tissue and tightening the skin. Cellulite is caused by the structure of fat and connective tissue that is beneath the skin which this surgical procedure does not fix.
Most patients can see the final results of their Thigh Lift Surgery between 6-12 months post procedure. Noticeable improvement to the area will be visible immediately, but residual swelling and tightness can take 3-6 months to resolve.
As with any surgical procedure, Thigh Lift surgery carries potential risks including:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Delayed wound healing
- Temporary numbness
- Fluid collection (seroma)
- Scarring
- Asymmetry
- Poor wound healing
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Anaesthesia-related reactions
Your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will discuss all potential risks during your consultation and explain how they are minimised throughout your treatment.
