The 5:2 diet, which involves limiting yourself to 500 calories a day for two non-consecutive days per week and eating whatever you like for the rest, was 2014’s most popular way of slimming down fast.

And now, leading dermatologists are suggesting that the 5:2 approach can also be applied to our beauty regime.

According to skincare experts, going completely make-up free for two (consecutive or non-consecutive) days a week can result in younger, healthier looking skin in under a month.

Dr Noor Almaani, Dermatologist at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, added that make-up usually contains fragrances, preservatives and chemical ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation.

‘Make-up can often clog the oil glands and can impact your pores, making them appear larger,’ she explains. ‘Taking regular breaks from wearing make-up could be a wise decision, as it will enable your skin to recover and it could reduce the level of irritation caused by wearing make-up over long periods of time.

‘I think it’s best to give the skin regular breaks – with the accumulation of all the make-up in our pores, no matter how rigorously we clean the skin, there will always be some make-up left behind.’
