A physician’s notes on Marilyn Monroe which emerged last week confirmed long-running speculation that the actress, who epitomised glamour during the latter part of Hollywood’s golden era, had a chin implant.

And it seems that Marilyn wasn’t alone in worrying about her jawline.

One cosmetic surgery group reports that enquiries for chin implants have doubled since 2010.

Some 60 per cent of queries come from women and 40 per cent from men who want to alter the silhouette of their faces.

Marilyn was reportedly in her mid-twenties when she underwent surgery, which mirrors the average age of those currently requesting chin implants – 25 years old.

The American Society of Plastic Surgery reports that implants are the fastest-growing cosmetic surgery procedure in recent years.

Demand is so high in the US – up 71 per cent from 2011 to 2012 – that chin augmentation has even been dubbed the new breast enhancement.

The Private Clinic of Harley Street – which offers a procedure where fat is removed from one area of the body and injected into the chin – has also seen a surge in demand.

Dr Dennis Wolf, who performs the fat transfer procedure, said: ‘Implants, fillers and surgery have been used for chins very successfully over the last few decades. Many patients have, over time, opted to explore alternatives to traditional fillers. One of these is fat transfer.

‘Fat transfer is certainly growing in popularity, however, its suitability in targeting the chin area does depend on what needs to be changed in the chin – whether it’s projection, volume, rotation or filling out lines.

‘Each patient therefore has to be carefully assessed and all possible options discussed with them, together with the relevant risk factors and complications associated with any treatment.

‘One of the reasons that this procedure is proving more and more popular among patients is that it is an entirely natural filler, taken from the patient’s own body, which means the chance of rejection is significantly lower.

‘It is also longer lasting and has been known to last up to five to 10 years, so for many patients who are looking for a long term solution, this is a good option.’
