Varicose Veins in the Scrotum, known as Varicoceles, are abnormally dilated veins. They are not only unsightly but can cause considerable pain, swelling and even lead to infertility. Veins are very important to keep the blood flowing back to the heart and to the lungs to oxygenate but sometimes the pressure exerted on them damages the one-way valves that enable the blood to continue flowing properly. The appearance of such varicose veins is frequently likened to a ‘bag of worms’.

Veins in the scrotum are involved with counter-current heat exchange, part of the way the testes manage to successfully produce and sustain sperm. When varicose veins develop in the scrotum it can affect the temperature of the testes, which can pose a risk of infertility if left untreated. Consequently treatment of varicose veins in the scrotum could help improve fertility.

The treatment typically takes around 90 minutes to perform and is performed under local anaesthetic. Patients do not feel discomfort during the procedure.

The procedure involves the embolisation of gonadal varicose veins. Embolisation is a radiological procedure. Using ultrasound to assist with location, a catheter is inserted into a major vein via a pinhole sized entry point in the skin which is then positioned into the vein needed to be treated, with the help of X-ray. A small metal coil is inserted through the catheter where it sits in the vein causing it to clot and essentially shut down. It is a safe and effective procedure.

Advantages

  • There is no need for an operation or further treatments
  • Our medical team has over 10 years experience of regularly treating patients
  • The procedure is minimally invasive, minimising downtime

Downtime

The procedure is a day-case procedure, meaning there is no need for an overnight stay in a hospital. You are advised to fully rest for 72 hours after the procedure, after which you can return to work and normal activities – taking care to avoid strenuous activity until you feel completely comfortable. Some patients report aching for several days after the procedure but this can be managed by over the counter painkillers.

Prices for this procedure start from around £8,000.
