  • Top clinic sees demand for liposuction for men up 150%
  • Sales of ab gym equipment also up 155% as men attempt to get 6 pack
  • Men under increasing pressure to achieve the ‘perfect body’

We often think of pressure and concern over body image as a predominantly female affliction, but increasingly men are suffering too.

And it seems an increasing number of men are so unhappy with their physique they are turning to surgery.

One London cosmetic surgery clinic claims the number of men booking in for body sculpting procedures this January has risen by 150 per cent compared to the first month of the year in previous years.

Booming sales of men’s fitness magazines – which always have a seriously sculpted muscular man adorning the cover – and the increasing pressure on men to look buff into middle age means they are starting to suffer the body insecurities women have felt for decades.

Men are getting specific about the type of body they want in 2014, and high on the wish list is, of course, the six pack.

The Private Clinic of Harley Street has seen the number of men booking in for vaser lipo, a form of minimally-invasive liposuction, soar in January 2014.

Vaser lipo removes fat from around the underlying musculature, which helps to create the kind of defined and toned results which would normally require hours in the gym.

Dr Edwin Anthony, Cosmetic Doctor at The Private Clinic, said: ‘We have witnessed a noticeable increase in the number of men booking in for lipo treatments. I now treat almost as many men as I do women.

‘Men are also increasingly putting more emphasis on their desire to achieve muscle definition as opposed to just fat loss. These men are healthy and are in good shape, but they struggle to achieve the definition that they would like.

‘I certainly think the number of men in the public eye who stay looking healthier and fitter, even as they age, is having an impact. This may well be contributing to the number of men considering undergoing procedures such as lipo.
