Brilliant ways to tackle wrinkles and sagging skin without surgery

August 13, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Facial Rejuvenation John Ross Low Res Day 1

Going through life we frown, smile and laugh. It’s natural for our bodies to manifest a physical reaction to our emotions and surroundings. However, by doing so, we encourage the appearance of fine lines and dynamic wrinkles.

Additionally, with age, our collagen and elastin production lessens while we naturally start losing fat around our face. Combined, these can lead to a looser facial tone, wrinkles, hollow upper cheeks, and heaviness above the jaw line and around the chin, giving our skin a tired and aged look so let’s look at the different non-surgical treatments that aim to give your skin a new lease on life.

Wrinkles and lines

Wrinkle injections

Cosmetic Botox for Men

The most popular and effective treatment for tackling the fine lines and wrinkles is wrinkle relaxing injections. The most renowned of these is Allergan’s Botox.

For those of you who fear the dreaded ‘frozen’ look, it’s important to realise that the key to a successful wrinkle injection treatment is an experienced practitioner, skilled in the art of moderation.

The injection works by relaxing muscles in the treated areas, leaving them unable to contract and reducing excessive facial movements.

Existing deep wrinkles are smoothed out and new ones are prevented from forming, with the effects lasting between 3-6 months. There is also a cumulative effect that means you might need fewer injections over time. The key here is not to wait until the toxin has completely disappeared. Your practitioner will be able to advise you on the most suitable top-up time for you.

On the flip-side, overdoing it is a sure-fire way to end up with ‘frozen’ unnatural results, which is why you need to have complete faith in your practitioner.

The reason this treatment has seen such success is because there is no downtime, and you walk away with revitalised and natural looking results.

Dermal fillers

Dermal_fillers_-_Juvederm_-_before_and_after_
Photo: Juvederm – Results look smooth and natural.

Dermal fillers are injected directly into wrinkles so as to plump the indented lines and add some volume.

To restore fullness to lips, sunken cheeks, and give more definition to the face, we inject temporary fillers containing hyaluronic acid (a natural substance found in the body).

Unfortunately there has been some controversy regarding fillers and there are some concerns that have to be kept in mind.

Firstly, there are over 160 kinds of fillers certified for sale in the UK and available for purchase and use by “non-healthcare professionals” as they are not classified as medicines.

Secondly, many patients are never made aware of the complications that can arise with the use of semi-permanent/permanent fillers, like the fact that although they last ‘forever’, they can only be surgically removed.

Moreover, because permanent fillers (often containing acrylic acid) work by stimulating an inflammatory reaction within the skin that makes scar tissue build up and lock it into place, the results and possible complications are unpredictable.

At The Private Clinic we only use the highest quality of temporary fillers and we are committed to our patients from start to finish, including after-care.

When fillers are administered correctly by regulated healthcare professionals, the treatment is quick, with results lasting between 6-12 months and no downtime whatsoever.

Facial definition and sagging skin

8 Point Lift

Areas for 8-point lift
Areas for 8-point lift

We mentioned dermal fillers earlier and the 8 Point Lift makes use of them to create a non-surgical facelift.

Also known as the Liquid Facelift, this specialised treatment targets key areas of the face to restore lost volume by combating the soft tissue loss that occurs with ageing.

The same rules as for dermal fillers apply but this technique offers a more complete solution compared to individual filler treatments with results lasting up to 18 months.

With the 8 point Lift there’s no risk of complications usually associated with a surgical facelift, it’s more affordable and there’s zero downtime.

Thread lift

Before and after Non-Surgical Threadlift
Before and after non-surgical threadlift at The Private Clinic.

The Thread Lift is highly specialised and requires a significant level of expertise to implement effectively.

Performed under local anaesthetic, the treatment sees anchoring sutures placed under the skin with the use of a fine needle that lifts sagging tissue.

The sutures have bi-directional cones that cling to the face’s tissue and do not need to be removed as they are principally made out of polylactic acid and are completely bio-degradable.

The acid has also been known to encourage collagen production, helping to add to the natural fullness of the face.

The procedure lasts between 30-60 minutes and the downtime is minimal but some slight bruising, swelling and mild tension may be experienced in the week after treatment.

The performing doctor will provide individually tailored advice taking into account a patient’s lifestyle to ensure recovery is as quick and easy as possible.

The Thread Lift is recommend for people over 30 who want to tackle moderate to prominent signs of ageing and want a more dramatic effect than individual wrinkle injection s or dermal fillers can provide.

That being said, the lift can be combined with other treatments such as dermal fillers, to add volume to hollow cheeks and the like.

Thermage

Before and After a Thermage Treatment
Before and after a Thermage treatment at The Private Clinic.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah Winfrey have championed the use of Thermage to combat skin laxity and wrinkles but a few conditions have to be fulfilled in order to enjoy the best results this treatment has to offer.

The procedure itself consists of a hand-held piece being passed over problem areas and emitting radiofrequency technology to heat collagen so that it contracts and causes skin to tighten over time while the production of new and remodelled collagen will further the effects.

It’s the only non-invasive procedure that helps tighten and contour skin in a single treatment without any surgery, injections or downtime.

First generations of the treatment could be rather painful and The Private Clinic is one of the few UK clinics to offer the new ThermageCool Comfort Plus Technology (CPT) system.

Thermage CPT is especially designed for the face, neck and decolletage and incorporates a cooling system and a vibrating hand-piece that aims to try and keep discomfort to a tolerable minimum.

It is particularly important to get this treatment done by reputable and trustworthy professionals as very few physicians have the expertise required and incorrect use can lead to burns or scarring.

The trick with this treatment is that you have to have enough collagen in the first place to be able to stimulate it.

It works on mildly to moderately sagging skin and so is not usually recommended for patients over 65.

On the other hand, it works on all skin types and colours while also being a year-round treatment as it doesn’t require you to avoid the sun.

The procedure takes 45 minutes or over, depending on the size of the treated area, and makes the skin tighten so that the full effects will be visible after 3-6 months.

How to tighten loose skin

August 3, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

You’ve sweated it in the gym for hours and put Mr Cadbury into financial difficulty with the amount of chocolate bars you’ve refused. Yet, while the pounds might be starting to creep off, there’s one thing that simply won’t change – that frustrating bit of loose skin on your body.

No matter how much weight you lose or how well you try to look after yourself, sagging skin can seem virtually impossible to get rid of and can make even the most pampered physique look out of shape and frumpy. Regardless of whether it’s from weight loss, pregnancy or something that’s simply decided to pop up of its own accord, sagging skin is a common problem – but there are treatment options available.

Loose skin around abdomen

Why does skin get loose?

Ever noticed how those fine lines from your pillow in the morning used to disappear that little bit quicker when you were younger? That’s because as we age, our skin’s production of collagen and elastin begins to deplete – meaning its elasticity and ability to restore itself also lessens. As a result, one of the biggest causes of loose or sagging skin is – surprise, surprise– time.

What’s more, many of our decisions earlier in life can begin to haunt us later down the line. Too much time in the sun causes collagen and elastin reserves to break down, meaning your skin can no longer repair itself as easily. This results in wrinkles, poor texture and, you guessed it, sagging in the skin.

If you’re facing loose skin before the hands of time should be taking their toll, there are a number of things that can cause it to sag. One of the most common is the loss of a large amount of weight over a short period of time. This is because your skin doesn’t have enough time to ‘shrink’ into your new shape or adapt its elasticity. While fat in the area might have disappeared, the skin takes longer to follow suit – time and patience can, in some cases, be your best friends. Similarly pregnancy causes many women to face sagging skin for the first time after the stomach grows to far larger than its usual size. To aid your skin’s recovery, doctors normally recommend putting on around 25-35 pounds and losing it over the 6-12 months after birth.

Despite there being a range of skin-sabotaging factors, you are not necessarily stuck with skin that’s gone slack. Read on to learn ways to defend against a droopy dermis.

Non-surgical treatment options

For early stages of facial sagging, a ‘non-surgical face lift’ may be the best way forward – avoiding the trauma of surgery, but giving a refreshed and lifted appearance. There are a range of different options available including the 8-Point-Lift which uses dermal fillers, and a Thread Lift ( pictured below) which uses bio-degradable sutures to lift and elevate the face.

A particularly popular option to help reduce sagging is Fat Transfer to the Face. In the treatment, fat is extracted from elsewhere on the body through minimally-invasive forms of liposuction (areas like the stomach, thighs and flanks are common choices) before it is refined and injected back into areas lacking in volume. Because the fat is completely natural, there is minimal risk of infection and the result is natural and long-lasting (providing you maintain your weight).

For the body, where sagging skin is often more severe, treatment options are perhaps more limited. Prevention (if possible) is always the best means, with doctors recommending trying to maintain as stable weight as possible (recommended weight gain during pregnancy normally lies between 10kg – 12.5kg over the entire nine months for example). If prevention hasn’t worked, Thermage (which also produces fantastic results on the face) is one of our favourite methods of skin tightening. It uses radiofrequency energy to heat collagen fibres in the skin as well as underlying tissue to encourage the skin to regenerate and tighten itself.

Surgical treatments

Non-invasive treatments won’t be suitable for everyone and, if you’re experiencing more severe areas of loose skin, you’ll normally be far better suited for a surgical procedure. While they might be more invasive, there is no point wasting your time and money on other methods that won’t work if you’ve been advised differently. There are a multitude of treatment options available, with modern technology and techniques meaning they are far less invasive than ever before.

For facial laxity, a Surgical Facelift may be required. The treatment is best for those battling signs of ageing and very rarely advisable for those under about 40. It is a popular choice in that it targets all areas of the face, and the results are extremely long-lasting with no need for top-ups or refreshes.

If your problem area is primarily focused around the eyes, a Blepharoplasty or Eyebrow Lift may be particularly useful. Eyelid lifts on the upper brows are usually performed under local anaesthetic in as little as 30 minutes, making them arguably one of the ‘easiest’ and safest plastic surgery treatments. It’s important to remember that no treatment is without risk, however, making it crucial you work with a recognised and highly qualified surgeon.

For the body, the treatment you require will completely depend on your problem area. There’s specialist procedures for many areas of the body, all with various focuses and one of the most common problem areas is the stomach, making an Abdominoplasty (more commonly known as a Tummy Tuck) a popular choice for many people.

Loose Skin Treatment at The Private Clinic

Getting rid of loose skin is difficult. When skin has been stretched and lost its elasticity it won’t always be able to repair itself. Your first step to restoring skin problems is always a healthy diet and exercise plan in which your weight is maintained (as much as possible) and skin isn’t stretched. For the people that this will no longer work for, do not panic. There are a multitude of options out there and experts who are able to help.

To find out more about loose skin procedures, call 03339209135 or use our online contact form to request a call back.

Consultations are available at our clinics located across the UK in London Harley Street, Birmingham, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Leeds, Manchester and Northampton.

Is technology ageing us quicker?

March 27, 2015 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Tech neck is a term that’s been popping up in the media recently. It suggests our love of technology is causing us aesthetic problems. But is it actually real? And what can you do to reverse it?

tech neck blackberry wrinkles reality or fake treatments

Recent statistics suggest that the average 18-39 year old with three digital devices or more can look at a screen up to 150 times a day. There are constantly articles pertaining as to how this affects our social life but now, it seems, our dependence on digital is also ageing us quicker too.

Various experts have been offering their opinions on the effect technology can have on our skin and face, suggesting that constant neck bending to look at screens encourages sagging skin, drooping jowls and even creases above the collarbone.  It’s very unlikely we’re all going to put our phones and tablets down to brave the morning commute alone, so what can be done to address the dreaded creases?

We have seen a huge rise in people turning to non-invasive treatments to address the problem. Every week we are visited by patients hoping to erase the neck creases they’ve developed as a result of spending so much time on devices like iPhones and Kindles.

The lower face (a prominent stomping ground for technology related aesthetic tantrums), is notoriously difficult to target through cosmetic products alone. One particularly popular treatment is the non-surgical Thread Lift (also known as Silhouette Soft or ‘puppet’ face lift)  which uses extremely fine, biodegradable sutures to lift sagging areas of skin and encourage collagen production without the need for incisions. Likewise non-invasive skin tightening treatments like Thermage are becoming increasingly popular, requiring no downtime and virtually painless methods to achieve their results. Wrinkle injections are a popular favourite to target fine lines and creases, while Dermal Fillers can help restore volume to hollow areas. One innovative treatment uses fillers in key positions of the face to lift and rejuvenate without surgery – known as the 8 Point Lift, the treatment is extremely specialised and normally only performed by professionals with extensive experience.

Before and after Non-Surgical Threadlift
Before and after Non-Surgical Threadlift

Walk-in walk-out methods like the above require no incisions or real downtime, making them extremely popular with those experiencing early signs of ageing. However they aren’t always suitable for everyone and more severe cases may require surgery. Facelifts and Necklifts can get rid of excess skin and fat around the area using incisions behind and in front of the ears to avoid scarring. However surgery should always be something you take your time to consider – we’d recommend speaking to non-surgical experts as well as plastic surgeons to ensure you understand exactly what your options are, and that the way you’ve chosen is the best one for you.

Tech Neck, Blackberry Botox, Smartphone Face…whatever you want to call it, more of us are becoming concerned about the effect our obsession with technology has on us aesthetically. Not everyone requires treatment and we’d always recommend considering a good exercise and skincare regime before anything else. However, if you are concerned about the area and feel products alone can’t help your concerns, make sure you only ever work with established professionals – your face and body are too important to trust anyone but the best.

We have clinics located across the country in London Harley Street, Birmingham, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Leeds, Manchester and Northampton.

Four non-surgical alternatives to a facelift

September 5, 2014 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

We all wish we could turn back time (physically, at least). But not everyone is ready for or willing to undergo extensive surgery in order to achieve the feat. With this in mind, we explore four non-surgical facelift options to turn back the years and help you rediscover your confidence without the hospital stay:

Threadlift

 threadlift before and after photo

How long does it take: 30-60 minutes

How long do results last: Up to 18 months

Areas: lower jaw, cheeks, eyebrows, neck.

You’ll hear a lot of names for the thread lift – Silhouette Lift, Suture Lift, Silhouette Soft™ – but, whatever you want to call it, the procedure is a revolutionary way to lift sagging areas without the need for incisions.

It uses tiny biodegradable sutures fitted with bi-directional cones to raise loose tissue and ease wrinkles. While the sutures themselves are absorbed by the body after 12-18 months, their main component is polylactic acid (PLA) which encourages the body’s production of collagen –a protein that naturally replenishes our skin. As a result, the effects of the treatment can still be seen long after.

Fat transfer to face

fat transfer to the face before and after photo

How long does it take: Around 90 minutes depending on the area.

How long do results last: Results can last several years.

Areas: most areas of the face.

How many times have you thought to yourself ‘I wish I could take fat from X and move it to Y’. Well, that’s precisely what fat transfer does. Using minimally-invasive VASER Liposuction, the procedure rids of stubborn pockets of fat on the body, before the fat is refined, and injected into the face to lift hollow areas and create volume.

Arguably the most ‘natural’ form of a face lift, results are very soft and there is minimal chance of scarring or infection. It is, however, not always advisable for every patient. Suitable deposits of fat are required, meaning it isn’t ideal for those who are very thin. A doctor will always consult with you extensively prior to treatment to ensure your safety and satisfaction.

8 point lift

Areas for 8-point lift

Time of treatment: 20-30 minutes

Results last: 18 months

Areas: cheek structure, tear trough and mid-face, nasolabial folds, corners of the lips, pre-jowl area, cheek hollows, jawline.

If you’ve done some research into facial rejuvenation, you’ll probably have heard of dermal fillers. The 8 point lift uses them in (you guessed it) eight key areas of the face to rejuvenate and lift ageing features.

Sometimes known as the ‘fluid’ or ‘liquid’ facelift, the treatment uses an advanced and precise technique to combat soft tissue loss and uses only the highest quality of dermal fillers for a more complete solution of lifting the skin than singular use of fillers.

Find out more about 8-point lift>>

Thermage

Length of treatment: From 45 minutes, depending on size of area

Length of results: Can last several years

Areas: majority of facial, neck and decolletage areas.

With results that are perhaps less intense than the other three, thermage uses radiofrequency energy to tighten loose areas (particularly of skin) by stimulating the body’s natural production of collagen.

Results are subtle and natural looking; at The Private Clinic we work exclusively with the ThermaCool CPT™ method of Thermage which allows for the best results with minimum discomfort. Unlike laser treatments thermage is suitable all types of skin and patients do not need to avoid the sun afterwards.

Which is the best method?

It’s important to keep an informed but open mind before consultation; your practitioner will be able to use their knowledge and experience to find the right treatment for you. Remember that these treatments won’t produce the same results as a surgical facelift, they are alternatives and it may be that your doctor or nurse advises you that they won’t be suitable for your needs. Always listen to your medical professional – if you don’t you may end up disappointed or, worse, in the unsafe hands of an unqualified practitioner. Providing you do your research and find a trustworthy professional, less invasive facelift options can be a fantastic way to rejuvenate your face safely whilst avoiding surgery.

The Private Clinic

With over 35 years of Harley Street medical excellence and CQC registered clinics nationwide, The Private Clinic works exclusively with highly experienced and qualified medical professionals. Their rejuvenation team consist of some of the country’s most respected doctors and nurses, all of whom pride themselves on a personal approach to each patient’s needs.

Treatment Guide: Facial Wrinkles and Lines

November 21, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

There are plenty of facial rejuvenation treatments out there but which ones are the best for lines and wrinkles? Many facial skin treatments can improve the appearance of the face, reducing lines and wrinkles even if they are not primarily designed to target them so please get to know all our treatments to see if you would benefit from a more versatile treatment.

Beautiful Skin at The Private Clinic

Here at The Private Clinic we welcome patients who may not know exactly what treatment they would like, hoping that we can advise them on the range of treatments available and their suitability to each one. Those kinds of patients have definitely come to right place. We wanted to make it clearer to patients what treatments are available for facial rejuvenation, particularly wrinkles and lines, so below is a treatment guide:

1.       Botox

Wrinkle injections, like Botox, are the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure every year with many thousands regularly having this effective wrinkle treatment. Botox helps to smooth out the face and prevent further wrinkling. It has been around for many years and as long as it is administered by a qualified and experienced medical professional it should be completely safe.

2.       Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are also hugely popular as people look to plump up and contour the face to a greater extent than Botox can. Dermal fillers can lift the face and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with natural-looking results. Ensure you choose an experienced and qualified professional to achieve great, long-lasting results.

3.       Chemical Peels

Chemical peels work by carefully taking off the top layers of the skin and promoting the growth of new skin cells, taking away damaged, wrinkled skin. They come in many strengths and uses for the skin, including salicylic and TCA peels. Make sure you get to know your options and the likely results. Stronger peels will require considerably more downtime than lighter peels but the results are going to be more noticeable. Specialised skin care products offer an even lighter option, which are available at The Private Clinic from our expert team.

4.       Laser Therapy

There are a range of laser therapies available that can target lines and wrinkles. Get enough information to know why certain laser treatments are better suited for treating lines and wrinkles compared to others. Lasers can be increased or decreased in wavelength (essentially strength) to suit different patient needs, particularly when it comes to skin colour as darker skin types require less intense treatments to protect their skin. The Private Clinic offer Pixel Laser therapy and Pearl Laser Therapy for facial rejuvenation.

5.       IPL (Intense Pulse Light) Therapy

IPL is a non-laser light-based treatment that directs focused light on the skin to take away damaged skin and improve the quality of skin. It is popular because it has a wide number of uses, including treating lines and wrinkles, and there is less downtime associated with it compared to laser treatments.

6.       Thermage

Thermage is an effective facial rejuvenation treatment that uses radiofrequency to improve the skin and tighten it, resulting in considerably visibly-improved skin. It is a treatment popular with celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow.

7.       Titan

Titan is an infrared treatment that stimulates the production of collagen and tightens the skin, resulting in reduced appearance of lines and wrinkles. Results are long-lasting and downtime is minimal.

8.       Microdermabrasion and Dermaroller Treatments

These treatments offer quick results if you aren’t looking for the kind of results you can expect from a laser treatment, for example. They are effective mini-rejuvenation treatments that can be easily performed in your lunch break or just after work with no downtime to perk your face up and keep those lines and wrinkles in check.

Thermage: From Gwyneth Paltrow to Oprah Winfrey, the Celebrity Skin Tightening Treatment

September 17, 2013 by dina.elbarbary Leave a Comment

Thermage is a popular non-surgical face and body lift has many celebrity fans, including Oprah Winfrey who championed the treatment back in 2006 and Gwyneth Paltrow soon after, even proclaiming after a session, “I feel like it took five years off my face.”

Other recognisable figures that have reportedly used Thermage include: Kim Kardashian; Demi Moore; Linda Evangelista; Amanda Holden and Michelle Obama.

Celebrities often have a lot more resources to use on their appearance and it’s certainly a good sign that with all the various treatments and procedures around celebs opt for Thermage. This quick, safe and easy procedure has proved a hit since its introduction and remains a relevant and effective treatment.

What is Thermage?

Thermage is an advanced rejuvenation treatment that uses radio frequency (RF) energy to help smooth, contour and tighten skin. Thermage has a great rejuvenating effect that leaves your skin looking fresher and invigorated. Thermage works by heating up the collagen-rich layers in the skin. This helps tighten the existing collagen in the skin as well as stimulating the production of more collagen. This results in smoother, less sagging and tighter skin. Thermage can be used to treat skin on the face and around the body.      Results are often immediate and can last many, many years.

Advantages of Thermage treatment

  • Safe
  • Non-invasive
  • Works on all skin types and colours
  • Delivers results in one session
  • Little or no downtime

Thermage treatment is available at our London Harley Street clinic.

What is Ultherapy?

Another celebrity favourite skin tightening treatment is Ultherapy. Ultherapy is similar to thermage, they both use energy to encourage and restore collagen production in the dermal layer of the skin but the type of energy that they both use is where they differ.

Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound with visualisation (MFU-V) energy which allows it to treat depths of the skin that other non-invasive cosmetic device are unable too reach. Ultherapy is also the only FDA approved treatment for specifically tightening the skin on the face, neck, chin and brow area.

Advantages of Ultherapy

  • Non-Surgical Skin Tightening
  • Treatment time from 30 minutes
  • Long-lasting results
  • FDA Approved treatment
  • No downtime
  • Stimulates new collagen & elastin, to help reverse the signs of ageing
  • Over 1 million treatments performed worldwide.
  • Named ‘Best in-office Treatment for Non surgical Skin Tightening’ in the New Beauty 2019 Awards

Ultherapy treatment is available at our clinics in London Marylebone, Stoke Poges in Buckinghamshire and Bristol.
